Asma' bint Abi Bakr As-Siddiq said, "I went to 'Aishah and the people were offering Salat. I asked her, 'What is wrong with the people ?' She pointed towards the sky with her head. I asked her, 'Is there a sign ?' 'Aishah nodded with her head meaning 'Yes'." Asma' added, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ prolonged the Salat to such an extent that I fainted. There was a waterskin by my side and I opened it and poured some water on my head. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished Salat, and the solar eclipse had cleared, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people and praised Allah as He deserves and said, 'Amma ba'du'." Asma' further said, "Some Ansari women started talking, so I turned to them in order to make them quiet. I asked 'Aishah what the Prophet ﷺ had said. 'Aishah said: 'He said, 'I have seen things at this place of mine which were never shown to me before; (I have seen) even Paradise and Hell. And, no doubt it has been revealed to me that you (people) will be put in trial in your graves like or nearly like the trial of Masih Ad-Dajjal. (The angels) will come to everyone of you and ask him, 'What do you know about this man (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) ?" The faithful believer or firm believer (Hisham was in doubt which word the Prophet ﷺ used), will say, 'He is Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he is Muhammad ﷺ who came to us with clear evidences and guidance. So we believed him, accepted his teachings and followed and trusted his teaching.' Then the angels will tell him to sleep (in peace) as they have come to know that he was a believer. But the hypocrite or a doubtful person (Hisham is not sure as to which word the Prophet ﷺ used), will be asked what he knew about this man (Prophet Muhammed ﷺ). He will say, 'I do not know but I heard the people saying something (about him) so I said the same' " Hisham added, "Fatima told me that she remembered that narration completely by heart except that she said about the hypocrite or a doubtful person that he will be punished severely."

I came to ʿAisha while she was praying, and said to her, "What has happened to the people?" She pointed out towards the sky. (I looked towards the mosque), and saw the people offering the prayer. Aisha said, "Subhan Allah." I said to her, "Is there a sign?" She nodded with her head meaning, "Yes." I, too, then stood (for the prayer of eclipse) till I became (nearly) unconscious and later on I poured water on my head. After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ praised and glorified Allah and then said, "Just now at this place I have seen what I have never seen before, including Paradise and Hell. No doubt it has been inspired to me that you will be put to trials in your graves and these trials will be like the trials of Masih-ad-Dajjal or nearly like it (the sub narrator is not sure which expression Asma' used). You will be asked, 'What do you know about this man (the Prophet ﷺ Muhammad)?' Then the faithful believer (or Asma' said a similar word) will reply, 'He is Muhammad Messenger of Allah ﷺ who had come to us with clear evidences and guidance and so we accepted his teachings and followed him. And he is Muhammad.' And he will repeat it thrice. Then the angels will say to him, 'Sleep in peace as we have come to know that you were a faithful believer.' On the other hand, a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know, but I heard the people saying something and so I said it.' (the same). "

I came to ʿAisha the wife of the Prophet ﷺ during the solar eclipse. The people were standing and offering the prayer and she was also praying. I asked her, "What is wrong with the people?" She beckoned with her hand towards the sky and said, "Subhan Allah." I asked her, "Is there a sign?" She pointed out, "Yes." So I, too, stood for the prayer till I fell unconscious and later on I poured water on my head. After the prayer, Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised and glorified Allah and said, "Just now I have seen something which I never saw before at this place of mine, including Paradise and Hell. I have been inspired (and have understood) that you will be put to trials in your graves and these trials will be like the trials of Ad-Dajjal, or nearly like it (the sub narrator is not sure of what Asma' said). Angels will come to every one of you and ask, 'What do you know about this man?' A believer will reply, 'He is Muhammad, Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he came to us with self-evident truth and guidance. So we accepted his teaching, believed and followed him.' Then the angels will say to him to sleep in peace as they have come to know that he was a believer. On the other hand a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know but heard the people saying something and so I said the same.' "

The sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. As I went to 'A'isha who was busy in prayer. I said: What is the matter with the people that they are praying (a special prayer)? She ('A'isha) pointed towards the sky with her head. I said: Is it (an unusual) sign? She said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for prayer for such a long time that I was about to faint. I caught hold of a waterskin lying by my side, and began to pour water over my head, or (began to sprinkle water) on my face. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then finished and the sun had brightened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then addressed the people, (after) praising Allah and lauding Him, and then said: There was no such thing as I did not see earlier, but I saw it at this very place of mine. I ever saw Paradise and Hell. It was also revealed to me that you would be tried in the graves, as you would he tried something like the turmoil of the Dajjal. Asma' said: I do not know which word he actually used (qariban or mithl), and each one of you would be brought and it would be said: What is your knowledge about this man? If the person is a believer, (Asma' said: I do not know whether it was the word al-Mu'min or al-Mu'qin) he would say: He is Muhammad and he is the Messenger of Allah. He brought to us the clear signs and right guidance. So we responded and obeyed him. (He would repeat this three times), and it would be said to him: You should go to sleep. We already knew that you are a believer in him. So the pious man would go to sleep. So far as the hypocrite or sceptic is concerned (Asma' said: I do not know which word was that: al-Munafiq (hypocrite) or al-Murtad (doubtful) he would say: I do not know. [AI] On the day of Hunayn, the Hawazin tribe came with their children, women, camels, and livestock, and they formed rows, increasing in number against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When they met, the Muslims turned their backs, as Allah the Almighty had stated. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O servants of Allah, I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger. O people of Ansar, I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger." So Allah defeated the polytheists and they did not strike with a sword or stab with a spear. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day, "Whoever kills a disbeliever, his belongings are his reward." Abu Talhah killed twenty men that day and took their belongings. Abu Qatadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I struck a man with a chainmail armor and was unable to retrieve it. Look for someone who took it." A man stood up and said, "I took it, so give it to me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would never be asked for something and refuse to give it, so he remained silent. 'Umar said, "By Allah, Allah will not grant you and give it to the likes of you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said, "Umar is truthful." The mother of Sulaym had a dagger with her, and Abu Talhah asked her, "Why do you have this with you?" She said, "I took it in case any of the disbelievers come close to me, I can stab him in the stomach." Abu Talhah said, "O Messenger of Allah, don't you hear what Umm Sulaym is saying?" She said, "O Messenger of Allah, kill those who come after us from the enemies because they were defeated because of you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has sufficed us and blessed us, O Umm Sulaym."

Do not narrate to Abu Talha about his son until I narrate it to him. Abu Talha came (home) ; she presented to him the supper. He took it and drank water. She then embellished herself which she did not do before. He (Abu Talha) had a sexual intercourse with her and when she saw that he was satisfied after sexual intercourse with her, she said: Abu Talha, if some people borrow something from another family and then (the members of the family) ask for its return, would they resist its return? He said: No. She said: I inform you about the death of your son. He was annoyed, and said: You did not inform me until I had a sexual intercourse with you and you later on gave me information about my son. He went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him what had happened. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May Allah bless both of you in the night spent by you! He (the narrator) said: She became pregnant. Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) was in the course of a journey and she was along with him and when Messenger of Allah ﷺ came back to Medina from the journey he did not enter (his house) (during the night). When the people came near Medina, she felt the pangs of delivery. He (Abu Talha) remained with her and Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded on. Abu Talha said: O Lord, you know that I love to go along with Messenger of Allah when he goes out and enter along with him when he enters and I have been detained as Thou seest. Umm Sulaim said: Abu Talha, I do not feel (so much pain) as I was feeling formerly, so better proceed on. So we proceeded on and she felt the pangs of delivery as they reached (Medina) and a child was born and my mother said to me: Anas, none should suckle him until you go to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tomorrow morning. And when it was morning I carried him (the child) and went along with him to Messenger of Allah (may peace beupon him). He said: I saw that he had in his hand the instrument for the cauterisation of the camels. When he saw me. he said: This is, perhaps, what Umm Sulaim has given birth to. I said: Yes. He laid down that instrument on the ground. I brought that child to him and placed it in his lap and Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Ajwa dates of Medina to be brought and softened them in his month. When these had become palatable he placed them in the mouth of that child. The child began to taste them. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: See what love the Ansar have for dates. He then wiped his face and named him 'Abdullah. (Using translation from Muslim 2144d)

[AI] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, a river separates me and the mosque of my people, so I would like for you to come to me and pray in a place in my house that I have made a mosque." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will do that." So when the morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Abu Bakr, and he followed him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, he said, "Where do you want?" I pointed to a spot in the house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and we lined up behind him, and he prayed with us two units of prayer. We then built a fence around it and the people of the village heard, so they started to come, and the house became crowded. A man from the people asked, "Where is Malik ibn Dukhshum?" A man replied, "That is one of the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say that, he says, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' seeking the face of Allah with it." He said, "As for us, we see his face and hear his speech." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say that, he says, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' seeking the face of Allah with it." A man from the people said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If a slave fulfills this on the Day of Resurrection, saying, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' seeking the face of Allah with it, Allah will make forbidden for him the Fire." Mahmud narrated this to some people, among them was Abu Ayyub. He said, "I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this." So I said, "If I return and the blind man is still alive, I will ask him." So I went to him and he was blind, but he was the leader of his people. I asked him, and he narrated to me just as he had before, and he was a Badri companion.

[AI] From some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , they said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them one morning, with a pleasant smell and a radiant face. We said, "O Prophet of Allah, we see you with a pleasant smell and a radiant face." He said, "What prevents me? Allah came to me tonight in the best form and said, 'O Muhammad, I said '[Here I am], my Lord, at Your service and pleasure.' He said, 'What is the dispute of the highest assembly?' I said, 'I do not know which Lord.' He said, 'That's twice or three times.' He then placed his hands between my shoulders and I felt its coolness between my chest until it became clear to me what is in the heavens and on earth. Then he recited this verse, 'Thus We show Abraham the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that he might be among the certain.' Then he said, 'O Muhammad, what is the dispute of the highest assembly?' I said, 'In performing the expiations.' He said, 'What are the expiations?' I said, 'Walking to the congregational prayer, sitting in the mosque after the prayer, contrary to the disliked acts, and perfecting the ablution in disliked conditions.' He said, 'Whoever does that, they live and die in goodness, and their sins are as if they were born that day. And among the ranks is good speech, giving greetings, feeding the hungry, and praying at night while people are asleep.' He said, 'O Muhammad, when you pray, say, 'O Allah, I ask You for what is good and to leave that which is evil, and to love the poor, and for You to forgive me. And when you desire affliction for the people, then take me before it touches me.'

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: When any one of you is afflicted with a calamity, let him say: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my calamity, and replace it with something better." When Abu Salamah was in his death throes, he said: "O Allah, compensate me for my loss with something better." When he died, I said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my calamity, and replace it with something better." She added: "I wanted to say: Replace it for me with something better than him, but I could not say that. When her waiting period was over, Abu Bakr proposed marriage to her, then 'Umar proposed marriage to her, but the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to her: "Do not be hasty, O 'Umar. I will not withhold her from you, but I have not conferred a blessing upon her yet. Her children will be given to you." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have no need for children; rather I want to uphold the ties of kinship." 'Umar said: "I knitted together two garments for her, and stuffed them with a kind of grass, then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came and took her, and put her in her cradle in his room, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was a modest and honorable man, and he would shy away from her, but he used to do that repeatedly." Then 'Ammar ibn Yasir, who was her foster brother through her mother, came and entered upon her, and he moved her cradle from his room and said: "Take away this tainted woman who was the cause of the harm caused to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came in and put his hand on his forehead, and said: "Where is Zainab? What has Zainab done?" She said: "Ammar came and took her away." He said: "Then he married her to his own cousin and kin."

ahmad:26925Ibn Numayr > Hishām > Fāṭimah > Asmāʾ

I only uttered whatever I heard people say. (Using translation from Muslim 905a)

malik:12-4Yaḥyá > Mālik > Hishām b. ʿUrwah > Fāṭimah Bint al-Mundhir > Asmāʾ Bint Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from Fatima bint al Mundhir that Asma bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq said, "I went to A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ during an eclipse of the sun, and everybody was standing in prayer, and she too was standing praying. I said, 'What is everybody doing?' She pointed towards the sky with her hand and said, 'Glory be to Allah.' I said, 'A sign?' She nodded 'Yes' with her head." She continued, "I stood until I had almost fainted, and I began to pour water over my head. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised Allah and spoke well of Him, and then said, 'There is nothing which I had previously not seen beforehand that I have not now seen while standing - even the Garden and the Fire. It has been revealed to me that you will be tried in your graves with a trial, like, or near to, the trial of the Dajjal (I do not know which one Asma said). Every one of you will have someone who comes to him and asks him, 'What do you know about this man?' A mumin, or one who has certainty (muqin) (I do not know which one Asma said), will say, 'He is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who came to us with clear proofs and guidance, and we answered and believed and followed.' He will then be told, 'Sleep in a good state. We know now that you were a mumin.' A hypocrite, however, or one who has doubts (l do not know which one Asma said), will say, 'I do not know, I heard everybody saying something and I said it.' "

[AI] Never has a day come upon me that was more difficult for me than the day when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with some of his companions and ordered me regarding them. Among the people was 'Ammaar, and we encountered a group of people, among whom were Muslim families. 'Ammaar spoke to me about them, and some of the Muslims said, "Leave them alone." I said, "No, by Allah, I will not do so until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sees them and gives his opinion about them." This angered 'Ammaar, and when I reached the Prophet ﷺ , I sought permission to speak to him while 'Ammaar sought permission as well. Permission was granted to him, and 'Ammaar entered and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not see what Khalid did and what he did?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, if it was not for your gathering, Ibn Sumayyah would not have insulted me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to me, "Did you not answer the man?" I said, "There was nothing preventing me from answering him except that it would have belittled him." This angered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "Whoever hates 'Ammaar, Allah hates him, and whoever insults 'Ammaar, Allah insults him, and whoever belittles 'Ammaar, Allah belittles him." I then left the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not stop seeking forgiveness for myself from 'Ammaar.

[AI] He informed him that 'Utban ibn Malik, who was from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and had participated in the Battle of Badr among the Ansar, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have lost my eyesight, but I still pray for my people. When it rains, the valley between me and the mosque floods, and I cannot go to their mosque to pray for them. I wish that you, O Messenger of Allah, would come and pray in my house and make it a place of worship." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "I will do that." The next day, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr As-Siddiq entered the house when the day had brightened. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sought permission, and I granted him permission. He did not sit down until he entered the house, and then he said, "Where would you like me to pray in your house?" I pointed to a corner of the house. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up, said the Takbir, and we stood behind him. He prayed two Rak'ahs and then said the Salam. We detained him in a corner which we made for him. Some men from the people of the house surrounded him until a large number of men gathered in the house. One of them said, "Where is Malik ibn Dukhshun?" Some of them said, "He is a hypocrite and does not love Allah and His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to them, "Do not say that to him. Do you not see that he has said, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,' seeking the Face of Allah with that?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best. We only see his face and his advice to the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Indeed, Allah, the Most Exalted and High, has forbidden the Fire for whoever says, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,' seeking the Face of Allah with it."

On the other hand a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know but heard the people saying something and so I said the same.' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 184)

[AI] Jalibib was a man from the Ansar who used to visit women and talk to them. Abu Barzah said, "I told my wife, 'Jalibib should not enter upon you.'" The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to not marry off their daughters until they knew whether the Messenger ﷺ wanted them or not. One day, the Prophet ﷺ said to a man from the Ansar, 'O so-and-so, marry your daughter to me.' He said, 'Yes, and may our eyes find rest.' The man asked, 'Is it for myself or someone else?' He replied, 'For Jalibib.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, should I consult her mother?' He then went to her mother and said, 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is proposing to marry your daughter.' She replied, 'Yes, and may our eyes find rest.' He asked, 'Is it for himself or someone else?' She said, 'For Jalibib.' He questioned, 'For Jalibib?' She responded, 'By Allah, I will not marry Jalibib.' When her father stood up to go to the Prophet ﷺ , the girl asked her mother, 'Who proposed to you?' She said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' The girl then said, 'Will you reject the proposal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or me? Accompany me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he will not disappoint me.' So her father went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'What is your opinion regarding her?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'Marry her to Jalibib.' Hammaad said, 'And do you know what he supplicated for her?' Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah narrated, 'What did he supplicate?' He said, 'O Allah, pour blessings on them abundantly and do not make their lives difficult.' Thabit said, 'So he married her to him.' While the Prophet ﷺ was in a battle, he asked, 'Is anyone missing?' They said, 'No.' He inquired, 'But I am missing Jalibib. Look for him among the martyrs.' They found him lying beside seven fallen enemies. Then they killed him. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'So he killed seven and they killed him? This act was from me, and I am pleased with him.' He mentioned this seven times, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed him on his arm. There was no bed that did not have the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ arm except for Jalibib's, until he was placed in his grave.' Thabit said, 'He was one of the Ansar who spent in charity whatever he possessed.'

[AI] "For the Jewish scholars, I am a visitor to the mosque of our father Ibrahim and Ismail, making a covenant. I went to the messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Makkah, and I met him when he had just finished performing Hajj. The messenger of Allah ﷺ found me in Mina with the people, and I stood among them. When the messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at me, he said, 'Are you Abdullah ibn Salam?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Come closer.' So, I approached him. He asked, 'By Allah, I ask you, O Abdullah ibn Salam, do you find me in the Torah as the messenger of Allah?' I said, 'Our Lord, describe him.' He said, 'Then Jibril came to him until he stood in front of the messenger of Allah ﷺ, then he recited to him, "Say: He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent."' Then the messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to us. Ibn Salam said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the messenger of Allah.' Then he went to Madinah and kept his Islam hidden. When the messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated to Madinah, I was on top of a palm tree, and I heard a noise in the city. I said, 'What is this?' They said, 'It is the messenger of Allah who has arrived.' So, I threw myself down from the top of the palm tree and then I approached him and greeted him. Then I went back, and my mother said, 'By Allah, if Musa ibn Imran (Moses) was here, he would not have thrown himself down from the top of the palm tree like that.' I said, 'By Allah, I went down because I am eager for the arrival of the messenger of Allah ﷺ, just as Musa ibn Imran was sent.'"

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik that Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi narrated from Abdullah bin Abd al-Hakam that Malik bin Anas and Mufaddal bin Fadala narrated from Hisham bin Urwah who narrated from Fatimah bint al-Mundhir who narrated from Asma bint Abu Bakr who said, "I went to Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , when the sun was eclipsed. The people were standing and praying, and she was also standing. I asked, 'What is happening to the people?' She pointed with her hand towards the sky and said, 'Subhan Allah!' I asked, 'Is this a sign?' She nodded and said, 'Yes.' I stood until I became faint, and then I poured water over my head. I praised Allah and His Messenger ﷺ . Then she said, 'There is nothing that I have not seen in my place except that I have seen it in this state, even Paradise and Hell. It was revealed to me that you will be tested in the graves like or similar to the trials of the Dajjal (Antichrist). I do not know which of them it is.' The sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I only uttered whatever I heard people say. (Using translation from Muslim 905a)
