That a man came to him (while two groups of Muslims were fighting) and said, "O Abu ʿAbdur Rahman! Don't you hear what Allah has mentioned in His Book: 'And if two groups of believers fight against each other...' (49.9) So what prevents you from fighting as Allah has mentioned in His Book?"' Ibn ʿUmar said, "O son of my brother! I would rather be blamed for not fighting because of this Verse than to be blamed because of another Verse where Allah says: 'And whoever kills a believer intentionally..." (4.93) Then that man said, "Allah says:-- 'And fight them until there is no more afflictions (worshipping other besides Allah) and the religion (i.e. worship) will be all for Allah (Alone)" (8.39) Ibn ʿUmar said, "We did this during the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the number of Muslims was small, and a man was put to trial because of his religion, the pagans would either kill or chain him; but when the Muslims increased (and Islam spread), there was no persecution." When that man saw that Ibn ʿUmar did not agree to his proposal, he said, "What is your opinion regarding ʿAli and ʿUthman?" Ibn ʿUmar said, "What is my opinion regarding ʿAli and ʿUthman? As for ʿUthman, Allah forgave him and you disliked to forgive him, and ʿAli is the cousin and son-in-law of Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Then he pointed out with his hand and said, "And that is his daughter's (house) which you can see."

Abu Bakr came from his house at As-Sunh on a horse. He dismounted and entered the Mosque, but did not speak to the people till he entered upon ʿAisha and went straight to Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was covered with Hibra cloth (i.e. a kind of Yemenite cloth). He then uncovered the Prophet's face and bowed over him and kissed him and wept, saying, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you. By Allah, Allah will never cause you to die twice. As for the death which was written for you, has come upon you." Narrated Ibn ʿAbbas: Abu Bakr went out while ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab was talking to the people. Abu Bakr said, "Sit down, O ʿUmar!" But ʿUmar refused to sit down. So the people came to Abu Bakr and left ʿUmar. Abu Bakr said, "To proceed, if anyone amongst you used to worship Muhammad , then Muhammad is dead, but if (anyone of) you used to worship Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die. Allah said:--"Muhammad is no more than an Apostle, and indeed (many) apostles have passed away before him..(till the end of the Verse )......Allah will reward to those who are thankful." (3.144) By Allah, it was as if the people never knew that Allah had revealed this Verse before till Abu Bakr recited it and all the people received it from him, and I heard everybody reciting it (then). Narrated Az-Zuhri: Saʿid bin Al-Musaiyab told me that ʿUmar said, "By Allah, when I heard Abu Bakr reciting it, my legs could not support me and I fell down at the very moment of hearing him reciting it, declaring that the Prophet ﷺ had died."

During the affliction of Ibn Az-Zubair, two men came to Ibn ʿUmar and said, "The people are lost, and you are the son of ʿUmar, and the companion of the Prophet, so what forbids you from coming out?" He said, "What forbids me is that Allah has prohibited the shedding of my brother's blood." They both said, "Didn't Allah say, 'And fight then until there is no more affliction?" He said "We fought until there was no more affliction and the worship is for Allah (Alone while you want to fight until there is affliction and until the worship become for other than Allah." Narrated Nafiʿ (through another group of sub-narrators): A man came to Ibn ʿUmar and said, "O Abu ʿAbdur Rahman! What made you perform Hajj in one year and Umra in another year and leave the Jihad for Allah' Cause though you know how much Allah recommends it?" Ibn ʿUmar replied, "O son of my brother! Islam is founded on five principles, i.e. believe in Allah and His Apostle, the five compulsory prayers, the fasting of the month of Ramadan, the payment of Zakat, and the Hajj to the House (of Allah)." The man said, "O Abu ʿAbdur Rahman! Won't you listen to why Allah has mentioned in His Book: 'If two groups of believers fight each other, then make peace between them, but if one of then transgresses beyond bounds against the other, then you all fight against the one that transgresses. (49.9) and:--"And fight them till there is no more affliction (i.e. no more worshiping of others along with Allah)." Ibn ʿUmar said, "We did it, during the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Islam had only a few followers. A man would be put to trial because of his religion; he would either be killed or tortured. But when the Muslims increased, there was no more afflictions or oppressions." The man said, "What is your opinion about ʿUthman and ʿAli?" Ibn ʿUmar said, "As for ʿUthman, it seems that Allah has forgiven him, but you people dislike that he should be forgiven. And as for ʿAli, he is the cousin of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his son-in-law." Then he pointed with his hand and said, "That is his house which you see."

We went out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Khaibar and we travelled during the night. A man amongst the people said to 'Amir bin Al-Aqwa', "Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, and so he got down and started (chanting Huda) reciting for the people, poetry that keep pace with the camel's foot steps, saying, "O Allah! Without You we would not have been guided on the right path, neither would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. So please forgive us what we have committed. Let all of us be sacrificed for Your cause and when we meet our enemy, make our feet firm and bestow peace and calmness on us and if they (our enemy) will call us towards an unjust thing we will refuse. The infidels have made a hue and cry to ask others help against us. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who is that driver (of the camels)?" They said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Aqwa."' He said, "May Allah bestow His mercy on him." A man among the people said, Has Martyrdom been granted to him, O Allah's Prophet! Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." We reached (the people of) Khaibar and besieged them till we were stricken with severe hunger but Allah helped the Muslims conquer Khaibar. In the evening of its conquest the people made many fires. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What are those fires? For what are you making fires?" They said, "For cooking meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They said, "Donkeys' meat." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Throw away the meat and break the cooking pots." A man said, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the cooking pots?" He said, "You can do that too." When the army files aligned in rows (for the battle), 'Amir's sword was a short one, and while attacking a Jew with it in order to hit him, the sharp edge of the sword turned back and hit 'Amir's knee and caused him to die. When the Muslims returned (from the battle), Salama said, Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me pale and said, 'What is wrong with you?"' I said, "Let my parents be sacrificed for you! The people claim that all the deeds of Amir have been annulled." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who said so?" I replied, "So-and-so and soand- so and Usaid bin Al-Hudair Al-Ansari said, 'Whoever says so is telling a lie. Verily, 'Amir will have double reward."' (While speaking) the Prophet ﷺ put two of his fingers together to indicate that, and added, "He was really a hard-working man and a Mujahid (devout fighter in Allah's Cause) and rarely have there lived in it (i.e., Medina or the battle-field) an "Arab like him."

So we overtook her while she was proceeding on her camel at the same place as Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us. We said (to her) "Where is the letter which is with you?" She said, "I have no letter with me." So we made her camel kneel down and searched her mount (baggage etc) but could not find anything. My two companions said, "We do not see any letter." I said, "I know that Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not tell a lie. By Allah, if you (the lady) do not bring out the letter, I will strip you of your clothes' When she noticed that I was serious, she put her hand into the knot of her waist sheet, for she was tying a sheet round herself, and brought out the letter. So we proceeded to Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the letter. The Prophet ﷺ said (to Habib), "What made you o what you have done, O Hatib?" Hatib replied, "I have done nothing except that I believe in Allah and His Apostle, and I have not changed or altered (my religion). But I wanted to do the favor to the people (pagans of Mecca) through which Allah might protect my family and my property, as there is none among your companions but has someone in Mecca through whom Allah protects his property (against harm). The Prophet ﷺ said, "Habib has told you the truth, so do not say to him (anything) but good." ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab said, "Verily he has betrayed Allah, His Apostle, and the believers! Allow me to chop his neck off!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "O ʿUmar! What do you know; perhaps Allah looked upon the Badr warriors and said, 'Do whatever you like, for I have ordained that you will be in Paradise.'" On that ʿUmar wept and said, "Allah and His Apostle know best."

"I was asked about those who were involved in the case of Li'an and if they are to be separated, during the leadership of Mus'ab bin Az-Zubair. I did not know what to say. So I went to the house of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar and I sought permission to enter. I was told he was taking a nap, but he heard me taking and he said: 'Is it Ibn Jubair? Enter. You would not have come except for a need.'" He said: "So I entered and found him laying on a saddlecloth from his mount. I said: 'O Abu 'Abdur-Rahman! Are those involved in Li'an separated?' He said: 'Glorious is Allah! Yes. The first who asked about hat was so-and-so the son of so-and-so. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said "O Messenger of Allah! If one of us saw his wife committing adultery, what should he do? If he were to say anything, his statement would be a horrible matter, and if he were to remain silent, his silence about the matter would be horrible." He said: 'So the Prophet ﷺ remained silent and did not answer him. Afterwards he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "The one who asked you about it has been tried by it." So Allah revealed these Ayat from Surat An-Nur: 'And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves, let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies by Allah (24:6-10)' - until the end of those Ayat. He said: 'So he called for the man and recited the Ayat to him and admonished him, reminded him, and he told him: "Indeed the punishment of the world is less than the punishment of the Hereafter." So he said: "Nay! By the One Who sent you with the Truth! I did not lie about her." Then he ﷺ did the same with the woman, admonishing her and reminding her and he told her: "Indeed the punishment of the world is less than the punishment of the Hereafter." She said: "Nay! By the One Who sent you with the Truth! He is not telling the truth.'" "He said: 'So he started with the man: He testified four times, by Allah that he is one of the truthful, and the fifth time that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was one of the liars. Then the same with the woman: She testified four times by Allah, that he was one of the liars, and the fifth time that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was one of the truthful. Then he separated the two of them.'"

Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman as-Sulami and Hibban bin ʿAtiyyah had a dispute. ʿAbdur-Rahman said to Hibban: I know what made your companion - meaning ʿAli ؓ - audacious. He said: What is it, may you be bereft of your father? He said. Something I heard ʿAli ؓ say. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, az-Zubair and Abu Marthad on a mission, and we were all horsemen. He said: ʿGo to Rawdat Khakh, for there you will find a woman who has a letter with her from Hatib bin Abi Baltaʿah to the mushrikeen; bring it to me.ʿ So we went on our horses until we caught up with her where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told us, travelling on a camel of hers. He [Hatib] had written to the people of Makkah, telling them about the march of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We said to her. Where is the letter you have with you? She said: I do not have any letter. We made her camel kneel down and searched her luggage for it, but we did not find anything. My two companions said: We do not see any letter with her, I said: You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not tell a lie. Then I swore: By the One by whom oaths are sworn, you will give us the letter or we will remove your clothes. She stretched out her hand to her girdle, which was wrapped around her, and brought out the letter. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he has betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers; let me strike his neck. He said: ʿO Hatib, what made you do what you did?ʿ He said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by Allah, it is not that I do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to do a favour for the people by means of which Allah might protect my family and my property, for every one of your Companions has some of his people there through whom Allah will protect his family and his property. He said: You have spoken the truth, do not say anything to him but good.ʿ ʻUmar said: O, Messenger of Allah, he betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers, let me strike his neck. He said. ʿls he not one of the people of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon them and said. “Do what you like, for Paradise is guaranteed for you.ʻʼ ʻUmarʻs eyes filled with tears and he said: Allah, may He be exalted, and His Messenger know best.

[Machine] On the authority of 'Amir, Abu 'Amir, or Abu Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Gabriel came to him in a different form, appearing as a man from the Muslims. Gabriel greeted him and the Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting. Then Gabriel placed his hand on the Prophet's knee and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to submit your face to Allah, to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, to establish the prayer, give the obligatory charity (zakat)." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I become a Muslim?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." Then Gabriel asked, "What is faith?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Divine Books, the prophets, life after death, heaven, hell, and fate, both its good and bad." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I believed?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." Then Gabriel asked, "What is excellence (ihsan), O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then truly He sees you." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I excelled?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." And we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ return to him, but we could not see the one speaking to him, nor could we hear his words. The questioner asked, "O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Glory be to Allah, it has five signs which only Allah knows: Allah possesses knowledge of the Hour, He sends down rain, He knows what is in the wombs, no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." (Surah Luqman, 34) The questioner then said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you wish, I can inform you of two signs that will precede it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Inform me." The questioner said, "When you see a slave woman giving birth to her mistress, and when you see the barefooted, naked, impoverished shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings." The questioner asked, "And who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Bedouins." Then he turned away, and when we did not see him on his way back, we said, "Glory be to Allah! This is Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion. The hand of Muhammad is in the hand of Gabriel, every time he came to him, I had not received any message except that I already knew it, except for this time."

[Machine] Narrated by 'Amir or Abu 'Amir, Abu Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Jibril came to him in a form other than his usual shape and saluted him. The Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting and then Jibril placed his hand on the Prophet's knee and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He replied, "To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the Zakat, to perform Hajj, and to fast in Ramadan." Jibril then asked him, "You have spoken the truth, so what is Iman (faith)?" He replied, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in predestination and that every good and bad is from Allah." Jibril asked again, "You have spoken the truth, so what is Ihsan (perfection)?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion, then be aware that He sees you." Jibril continued to ask the Prophet ﷺ about the signs of the Day of Judgment until he asked, "When will the Hour be?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "The one being asked does not know more than the one asking. But I will inform you of its signs. When you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings, that will be one of its signs. And when you see the hunched-backed, barefoot uncivilized Bedouins competing in building great structures, that will be one of its signs." Then he (Jibril) left. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent for a while and then said, "O Abu Huraira, did you mark or memorize everything?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, even I cannot memorize all this." Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ passed his hand over my chest and I felt its coolness in my chest, and I knew all that he had said.

[Machine] "So, I heard Abu Dharr saying that the Prophet ﷺ stood up one night in the prayer of Isha and prayed with the people. Then some of his companions lagged behind praying. When he saw them standing up and lagging behind, he left to his camel. When he saw that the people had left the place, he returned to his place and prayed. I came and stood behind him, so he beckoned to me with his right hand, so I stood on his right, then Ibn Mas'ud came and stood behind me and Abu Dharr beckoned to him with his left hand, so he stood on his left. So the three of us prayed, each man praying for himself and reciting from the Quran what Allah willed. And he stood with a verse from the Quran and repeated it until morning prayer came. After we became morning, I beckoned to Abdullah bin Mas'ud and asked him what he wanted to do yesterday? Ibn Mas'ud said, 'I do not ask him anything until he tells me.' So I said, 'By my father and mother, you stood with a verse from the Quran and you have the Quran?' If one of us had done this and we found him on it, I would have prayed for my Ummah.' He said, 'So what did you respond to him or what did he say to you?' I said, 'I responded with something that, if he had realized it, many of them would have refrained from leaving the prayer.' He said, 'Shouldn't I give glad tidings to the people?' I said, 'Yes.' So I left hurling stones near people and Umar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you send them with this, they will be disinclined from worship.' So he called him back and he went back. And that is the verse, 'If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You Who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' (Quran 5:118).

[Machine] I said, "O Abu Abdullah al-Rahman, referring to Ibn Umar, there are people who claim that there is no fate (predestination). He said: Do we have anyone among us like them? I said, No. He said: Then convey to them from me that when you meet them, indeed Ibn Umar disassociates himself from you and you disassociate yourselves from him." Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated to us that while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a man came who had no signs of travel nor was he from the people of the city. He came and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah. He said, "O Muhammad, what is Islam? He said, "Islam is that you bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, give zakah, perform Hajj, perform Umrah, cleanse yourself from major impurity, complete ablution, and fast during Ramadan." He said, "If I do all of that, would I be a Muslim?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken the truth." He asked, "O Muhammad, what is faith (imaan)?" He said, "Faith is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and you believe in the Day of Judgment, and you believe in fate, its good and its evil." He said, "If I do all of that, would I be a believer (mu'min)?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken the truth." He asked, "O Muhammad, what is excellence (ihsan)?" He said, "Excellence is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, and even though you do not see Him, He sees you." He asked, "If I do that, would I be excellent (muhsin)?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken the truth." He asked, "O Muhammad, when is the Hour (Day of Judgment)?" He said, "Glory be to Allah, the one who is asked about it knows no more than the questioner, but if you wish, I will inform you about its signs." He said, "Yes." He said, "When you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings and when you see women giving birth to their mistresses, that is among the signs of the Hour." He said, "You have spoken the truth." Then the man left, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Umar, do you know who this man was?" We said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "This was Gabriel who came to teach you your religion."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , sent Amr ibn al-As with the army of Dhat as-Salsal. Abu Bakr and Umar were also sent with him, as well as their companions, and they set out until they reached the mountain of Tayyih. Amr ibn al-As said, "Look for a man who knows the way." They replied, "We only know Rafi' ibn Amr, who used to be a bandit in the time of ignorance (pre-Islamic era)" So I asked Tariq, "What does 'Rabil' mean?" He said, "It is a thief who raids people alone and robs them." Rafi' then said, "When we completed our raids and reached the place we had left, I noticed Abu Bakr and went to him. I said, 'O Companion of the Sandals, I have noticed you among your companions. Bring me something that if I learn it, I will be like you.' He said, 'Do you memorize your five fingers?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and establish the five daily prayers, give Zakat if you have wealth, perform Hajj, and fast during Ramadan?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'And something else, you should not be commanded by two people.' I asked, 'Would authority be limited to those who were present at Badr?' He replied, 'It is soon to spread until it reaches you and whoever is below you. When Allah sent His Prophet, people entered Islam, some of whom were guided by Allah, while others were forced by the sword. They are the neighbors of Allah, living in His protection. If a man is a ruler and the people are oppressed, but he does not take revenge on behalf of some of them from others, then Allah will take revenge on him. Indeed, a man can have a sheep taken by his neighbor and he will remain angry on behalf of his neighbor. And Allah is behind (i.e. in support of) the neighbor.' Rafi' said, 'I stayed for a year, and then Abu Bakr was appointed as Caliph. So I went to him and said, 'I am Rafi', I met you on such and such a day and at such and such a place.' He said, 'I remember.' I said, 'You forbade me from ruling (in reference to the incident when he was a bandit), but then you rode with a greater nation than that of Muhammad, ﷺ .' He said, 'Yes, and whoever does not stand with them with the Book of Allah has the curse of Allah upon him," meaning the curse of Allah.

[Machine] 'Ukrimah and Abu Yazid al-Madinah, or one of them, doubted that Abd al-Razzaq said that Asma bint 'Umais said, "When Fatimah was given to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib as a gift, we found nothing in his house except spread-out sand, a stuffed pillow, a jug, and a small cup." So the Prophet ﷺ sent a message to 'Ali saying, "Do not do anything until I come to you." Then the Prophet ﷺ came and said, "Has my brother done something wrong?" Umm Ayman, who was Umm Usamah ibn Zaid and was Abyssinian, said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is your brother and I married him to your daughter." The Prophet ﷺ had a strong bond with his companions and had a strong bond with 'Ali himself. He said, "That is how it should be, O Umm Ayman." Then the Prophet ﷺ called for a container of water and said whatever Allah wanted him to say, then he wiped Ali's chest and face with it. He then called for Fatimah, and she came stumbling in her dress out of shyness. He sprinkled some of the water on her and said whatever Allah wanted him to say. Then he said to her, "I married you to him because he is the most beloved to me among my family." Then he saw a black figure behind the curtain or door, and he said, "Who is this?" Asma said, "It's Asma bint 'Umais." He said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Did you come with his daughter as an honor to the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "Yes, the girl needs someone close to her. If she has a need, she can turn to her." He said, "Then pray for me, for it is the most trustworthy of my deeds to me." Then he said to 'Ali, "Your family is under your care." Then he left and went back to his room, and he kept praying for them until he disappeared from sight."

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had finished with the people of Badr with the son of Faras, who was called Al-Qarha. I said, "O Muhammad, I have come to you with the son of Al-Qarha for you to take him." He said, "I have no need for him, and if you want, I can return him to you with the best of the spoils of Badr." I said, "I would not give him up today for anything other than him." He said, "I have no need for him." Then he said, "O owner of the two garments, will you not accept Islam so that you may be among the first in this matter?" I said, "No." He said, "Why?" I said, "I have seen your people turn away from you." Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah said in his narration, "They played with you." He said, "So how did you learn about their wrestling at Badr?" I said, "It has reached me." He said, "Do you have any disagreement with them?" I said, "Yes, for you to conquer and inhabit the Ka'bah." He said, "Perhaps if you live, you will see that." He said, "O Bilal, take the man's bag and give him some dates." When I turned away, he said, "He is one of the best knights of Banu 'Amir." He said, "By Allah, I will reach my family rapidly." Then a rider approached and I asked, "Where are you from?" He said, "From Makkah." I asked, "What did the people do?" He said, "By Allah, Muhammad has indeed prevailed over it and inhabited it." I said, "May my mother lose me! By Allah, if I embrace Islam today and then ask her for advice, I will cut her off." Abu Muslim said, "Musaddad narrated to me from Ibn Al-Mubarak that his name was Shurahbil, and he was only called Al-Jawshan because he had a prominent chest."

[Machine] "For the Jewish scholars, I am a visitor to the mosque of our father Ibrahim and Ismail, making a covenant. I went to the messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Makkah, and I met him when he had just finished performing Hajj. The messenger of Allah ﷺ found me in Mina with the people, and I stood among them. When the messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at me, he said, 'Are you Abdullah ibn Salam?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Come closer.' So, I approached him. He asked, 'By Allah, I ask you, O Abdullah ibn Salam, do you find me in the Torah as the messenger of Allah?' I said, 'Our Lord, describe him.' He said, 'Then Jibril came to him until he stood in front of the messenger of Allah ﷺ, then he recited to him, "Say: He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent."' Then the messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to us. Ibn Salam said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the messenger of Allah.' Then he went to Madinah and kept his Islam hidden. When the messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated to Madinah, I was on top of a palm tree, and I heard a noise in the city. I said, 'What is this?' They said, 'It is the messenger of Allah who has arrived.' So, I threw myself down from the top of the palm tree and then I approached him and greeted him. Then I went back, and my mother said, 'By Allah, if Musa ibn Imran (Moses) was here, he would not have thrown himself down from the top of the palm tree like that.' I said, 'By Allah, I went down because I am eager for the arrival of the messenger of Allah ﷺ, just as Musa ibn Imran was sent.'"

[Machine] Indeed, Amir al-Mu'minin entrusted me during his illness, saying, "If any of the people of Hijaz come to me, guide them to me." And indeed, I found someone from the people of Hijaz, so he said, "As Amir al-Mu'minin suspected, make a pact with me and gather the armies." He then sent them to attack the city three times, then called them to pledge loyalty to Yazid, despite them being worshippers of Qanoot in obedience to Allah and disobedience to Him. They agreed to this except for one man from Quraysh whose mother was 'Umm Walad. He said to him, "Pledge allegiance to Yazid, as you are a slave in obedience to Allah and disobedience to Him." He refused to accept this from him and killed him. His mother then swore that if Allah would enable her to get hold of a live or dead Muslim, she would burn him with fire. When Muslim bin 'Uqba left Medina, his illness intensified and he died. Umm al-Qurashi brought a flint to his grave and ordered that it be dug up from his head. When they reached the grave, they found a snake wrapped around his neck, holding onto his nose. They shouted for her to leave, saying, "Leave, O our lady, for Allah has sufficed you from his evil." They informed her of what had happened, but she said, "I will not fulfill what I promised to Allah." Then she took a stick and moved it around the snake's tail, and it moved away from the back of his head. She performed two rak'ahs, then said, "O Allah, if You know that my anger against Muslim bin 'Uqba today was for Your sake, then create a division between me and him." He said, "Then she took a stick and moved it around the snake's tail, and it moved away from the back of his head. She performed two rak'ahs, then said, 'O Allah, if You know that my anger against Muslim bin 'Uqba today was for Your sake, then create a division between me and him.'"

[Machine] Omar, I am staying the night if God wills. I am warning them against those people who oppress them in their affairs," said Abdulrahman. So I said, "Oh Amir al-Mu'minin, do not do that on this day. The season gathers the masses and their chaos. I fear that you might say something that they would take and fly off with, and not put it in its proper place. Wait until you enter the city, as it is the abode of migration, Sunnah, and faith. Purify yourself with the scholars and their leaders. Say what you want to say in a way that they understand it and put it in its proper place," said Omar. "If I enter the city safely, I will speak to the people there in the first gathering I establish, if God wills," he added. According to Ibn Abbas, when I arrived at the city, I migrated to Jumaa and found Sa'id ibn Zayd had already proceeded me in migration. He sat next to the pulpit and I sat next to him. Omar did not ascend the pulpit, so I ascended it and performed the prayer of witness and praised Allah for what He deserves. Then he said, "As for what follows, I will say something to you which I do not know if it will remain with you until my death. Whoever understands it and preserves it, let him speak it wherever his journey ends. And whoever fears that he will not understand it, then it is not allowed for anyone to accuse me of lying. Indeed, Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed the book to him. In what was revealed to him was the verse of stoning, so we recited it and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried it out, and we carried it out after him. I fear that if a long time passes, someone might say, ‘We do not find the stoning in the book of Allah,’ and they will go astray by abandoning an obligation that Allah has revealed. Indeed, stoning is prescribed in the book of Allah for the one who committed adultery, if he is married, be it from the males or females, when clear evidence is established or if a confession is made."

[Machine] That I have adopted your way and followed you in dealing with people's disputes, and I have distanced myself from evil as much as I can. And I have read a verse from the book of Allah that has deeply affected my heart. Tell me about it. Have you heard the saying of Allah, the Most Blessed and Exalted: "And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:9) Inform me about this verse. So Abdullah and Malik departed from me, and then Abdullah ibn Umar came to us and said, "I did not find in myself any inclination to fight against this rebellious group, as Allah commanded me." Al-Qattan added in his narration that Hamza said, "So we said to him, who do you consider the rebellious group to be?" Ibn Umar said, "Ibn Zubayr's son rebelled against these people, expelled them from their homes, and broke their covenant. And Abdullah ibn Umar's statement is indicative of the permissibility of using this verse in fighting against the rebellious group."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , passed away, and Abu Bakr was appointed as his successor. Those Arabs who had disbelieved continued to do so. Umar ibn Al-Khattab said to Abu Bakr, "How can you fight the people when the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, "There is no god but Allah," and whoever says, "There is no god but Allah," his wealth and his life will be protected except for what is justified and his reckoning is with Allah?'" Abu Bakr replied, "By Allah, I will fight whoever separates prayer and zakat, for indeed, zakat is the right of wealth. By Allah, if they withheld from me a small cord that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , I would fight them for withholding it." Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, "By Allah, this is only because I saw Allah had expanded the chest of Abu Bakr for fighting, so I knew it was the truth." Qutaybah narrated to us, Abu Sa'eed ibn Abi 'Amr told us, Abu Al-Abbas Al-Asamm narrated to us, Rabee'ah said, "Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, 'This is like the two hadiths before it, which were general regarding the polytheists. However, what is intended in them, and Allah knows best, is the polytheistic people of the idols. There was no one from the people of the Book, apart from the Jews in Al-Madinah, who were allies of the Ansar. The Ansar were the first to gather as Muslims without any enmity toward the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . They bid farewell to the Jews, without showing hostility in words or actions. Until the Battle of Badr, they did not speak openly against the Prophet or incite against him. So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , killed some of them. In the Hijaz, I only knew of the Jews and a few Christians in Najran who were adversaries. The Magians were in Hajar, Barbary lands, and Fars, far removed from the Hijaz. Apart from them, the polytheistic people of the idols were numerous.'"

[Machine] A group of Ansar people left Kufa for Medina, and they came to a neighborhood of the Bani Asad tribe who were widowed. They asked them for a transaction, but they had no goods for sale. They asked them for some villages, but they said they couldn't afford their villages. They continued to argue until they fought each other. The Bedouins left their houses and belongings for them and took a sheep from every ten of them. They went to Umar and told him about it. He praised Allah and thanked Him and said if he had been there, he would have done the same. He then wrote to the people of the cities and the people under protection to prepare a place for the guest. Qais then narrated that Abdul Rahman Ibn Abi Layla informed him that his father told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed some sheep among his companions, giving every ten individuals a sheep. He said it was a Sunnah. Qais also narrated that Ibn Abi Layla informed him that Umar wrote to prepare a place for the Muslims and the protected ones for a night stay. Ibn Abi Layla said, "I remember that the people of the land used to host us for a night stay, and we used to say 'Sham' in Persian language means dinner."

As for ʿUthman, Allah forgave him and you disliked to forgive him, and ʿAli is the cousin and son-in-law of Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Then he pointed out with his hand and said, "And that is his daughter's (house) which you can see." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4650)

By Allah, there is no maintenance allowance for you, except in case you are pregnant. She came to Allah's Apostle (may peace he upon him) and mentioned their opinion to him, whereupon he said: There is no maintenance allowance for you. Then she sought permission to move (to another place), and he (the Holy Prophet) permitted her. She said: Messenger of Allah, where (should I go)? He said: To the house of Ibn Umm Maktum and, as he is blind, she could put off her garmeqts in his presence and he would not see her. And when her 'Idda was over. Allah's Apostle ﷺ married her to Usama b. Zaid. Marwan (the governor of Medina) sent Qabisa b. Dhuwaib in order to ask her about this hadith, and she narrated it to him, whereupon Marwan said: We have not heard this hadith but from a woman. We would adopt a safe (path) where we found the people. Fatima said that when these words of, Marwan were conveyed to her. There is between me and you the word of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic: Do" not turn them out" of their houses. She asserted: This is in regard to the revocable divorce what new (turn can the event take) after three pronouncements (separation between irrevocable). Why do you say there is no maintenance allowance for her if she is not pregnant? Then on what ground do you restrain her? (Using translation from Muslim 1480h)

[Machine] When Umar came to Sham, he performed the tawaf around its hills. Then he stayed in Hims and ordered that their poor be written to. The letter was brought to him and he saw that it was from Sa'id bin 'Amir bin Judham, their leader. Umar asked, "Who is Sa'id bin 'Amir?" They said, "Our leader." Umar said, "Your leader is also poor? Where is his generosity? Where is his sustenance?" They said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, he does not keep anything for himself." Umar cried and then he took one thousand dinars and tied them, then sent them to him and said, "Read him the greetings from me and tell him that Amir al-Mu'minin has sent these to you to help you with your needs." The messenger brought them to him and he looked and saw they were dinars. So he began to return them. His wife asked, "What is the matter with you, O so-and-so? Did Amir al-Mu'minin die?" He said, "No, rather something greater than that." She said, "Did some sign appear?" He said, "Something greater than that." She said, "Did some matter of the Hour occur?" He said, "Something greater than that." She said, "Then what is the matter with you?" He said, "The material world has brought me tribulation and it has overcome me." She said, "Do whatever you wish in it." He said, "Do you have any support?" She said, "Yes." He took a garment and tied the dinars in it, then put them in a purse and then he encountered a military detachment from the Muslim armies and he distributed all of it among them. His wife said to him, "May Allah have mercy on you! If you had kept something from it, we could have benefited from it." He said to her, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say: 'If a woman from the people of Jannah were to look at the people of the earth, she would fill the earth with the fragrance of musk.'
