10. Book of Funerals
[Machine] "From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: 'Indeed, when a person is placed upon his bed, he says, "Send me forward, send me forward!" And when a person is placed upon his bed, he says, "Oh, woe is me! Where are you taking me?"' He meant the believer and the disbeliever."
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "There is a pressure on the grave, if anyone could escape from it, Sa'd ibn Mu'adh would have escaped from it."
[Machine] According to the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "When a person is placed in their grave, they can hear the footsteps of those who are walking away from them. If the deceased was a believer, then their prayer will be at their head, their fasting will be to their right, and their charity will be to their left. The good deeds of giving in charity, maintaining family ties, and doing good to others will be near their feet. Then it will be said to them, 'Sit up,' and they will sit up. The sun will be brought near to them and the time for sunset will be delayed. It will be said to them, 'Do you see this man whom the people speak about and bear witness to? What do you say about him?' They will reply, 'Leave me alone until I pray.' Then they will say, 'You will soon find out about what we are asking you.' They will ask again, "What do you say about this man whom the people speak about and bear witness to?' The person will say, 'I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah and that he brought the truth from Allah.' Then they will be told, 'You have been given life and death for this, and you will be resurrected if Allah wills.' Then a door from the doors of Paradise will be opened for them, and they will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it.' They will experience an increase in happiness and delight. Then a door from the doors of Hell will also be opened for them, and they will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it if you were to disobey Him.' They will experience an increase in sadness and remorse. Then their grave will be expanded for them to a distance of seventy arm lengths and it will be illuminated for them. Their body will return to the state it was when they were first buried, and their fragrant odor will be in the breezes of Paradise. This is what Allah meant in His saying, 'Allah will establish those who believe with the word that stands firm in the life of this world and in the Hereafter' until the end of the verse. The Prophet ﷺ also said, 'When a disbeliever is buried, nothing comes to him from the front, right, left, or back. Then he will be told to sit up, and he will sit up in fear and fright. It will be said to him, 'Do you see this man whom the people speak about and bear witness to? What do you say about him?' He will reply, 'Which man?' It will be said, 'The one you were with.' He will say, 'I don't know.' I heard the people saying something, so I said what the people were saying.' It will be said to him, 'You have been given life and death for this, and you will be resurrected if Allah wills.' Then a door from the doors of Hell will be opened for him, and he will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it.' He will experience an increase in regret and punishment. Then a door from the doors of Paradise will also be opened for him, and he will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it if you were to obey Him.' He will experience an increase in regret and punishment. Then his grave will be constricted until his ribs will be crushed. This is the straitened life that Allah mentioned in His saying, 'Indeed, he will have a depressing life, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.'"
I came to ʿAisha the wife of the Prophet ﷺ during the solar eclipse. The people were standing and offering the prayer and she was also praying. I asked her, "What is wrong with the people?" She beckoned with her hand towards the sky and said, "Subhan Allah." I asked her, "Is there a sign?" She pointed out, "Yes." So I, too, stood for the prayer till I fell unconscious and later on I poured water on my head. After the prayer, Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised and glorified Allah and said, "Just now I have seen something which I never saw before at this place of mine, including Paradise and Hell. I have been inspired (and have understood) that you will be put to trials in your graves and these trials will be like the trials of Ad-Dajjal, or nearly like it (the sub narrator is not sure of what Asma' said). Angels will come to every one of you and ask, 'What do you know about this man?' A believer will reply, 'He is Muhammad, Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he came to us with self-evident truth and guidance. So we accepted his teaching, believed and followed him.' Then the angels will say to him to sleep in peace as they have come to know that he was a believer. On the other hand a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know but heard the people saying something and so I said the same.' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 184)
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned the seductive nature of the grave and Umar ibn al-Khattab asked, "Will our minds be returned to us, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes, in the same condition as you are today." He then said, "By the one in whose hand is my soul, the grave has the ability to crush a person."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the deceased enters the grave, the sun is set before him, so he says, 'Leave me so that I may pray.'"
The Messenger of Allah said: "When the deceased - or he said when one of you - is buried, two angels, black and blue (eyed_ come to him. One of them is called Al-Munkar, and the other An-Nakir. They say: 'What did you used to say about this man?' So he says what he was saying (before death) 'He is Allah's slave and His Messenger. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.' So they say: 'We knew that you would say this.' Then his grave is expanded to seventy by seventy cubits, then it is illuminated for him. Then it is said to him: 'Sleep.' So he said: 'Can I return to my family to inform them?' They say: 'Sleep as a newlywed, whom none awakens but the dearest of his family.' Until Allah resurrects him from his resting place.""If he was a hypocrite he would say: 'I heard people saying something, so I said the same; I do not know.' So they said: 'We knew you would say that.' So the earth is told: 'Constrict him.' So it constricts around him, squeezing his ribs together. He continues being punished like that until Allah resurrects him from his resting place." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1071)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The deceased can hear the sound of footsteps when they turn away."

[Machine] Regarding the Prophet ﷺ in his saying, "For indeed, he will have a narrow livelihood," he said, "The punishment of the grave."
"When a person is put in his grave and his companions leave him, he hears the sound of their sandals. Two angels come to him, making him sit up, and say to him: 'What did you say about this man (Muhammad)?' As for the believer, he says: 'I bear witness that he says: 'I bear witness that he is the slave of Allah and His Messenger.' It is said to him: 'Look at your place in hell; Allah has replaced it for you with a place better than it.''' The Messenger of Allah said: "Then he sees them both." As for the disbeliever or the hypocrite, it is said to him: 'What did you say about this man?' He says: 'I do not know; I used to say what the people said.' It is said to him: 'You did not understand and you did not follow those who had understanding.' Then he is dealt a blow between his ears and the man utters a scream which everything near him hears, except for the two races.''' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2051)
