10. Book of Funerals
[Machine] We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral procession passed by. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The believer finds rest and is relieved from the afflictions, trials, and calamities of this world when they die. As for the disbeliever, the people, the land, the trees, and the animals find rest and relief from them."
He who loves to meet Allah, Allah also loves to meet him, and he who dislikes to meet Allah, Allah also abhors to meet him. (Using translation from Muslim 2683a)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6508)
He who loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him, and he who dislikes to meet Allah, Allah abhors to meet him. I ('A'isha) said: Allah's Apostle, so far as the feeling of aversion against death is concerned, we all have this feeling. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: It is not that (which you construe), but (this) that when a believer (at the time of death) is given the glad tidings of the mercy of Allah, His Pleasure, and of Paradise, he loves to meet Allah, and Allah also loves to meet him, and when an unbeliever is given the news of the torment at the Hand of Allah, and Hardship to be imposed by Him, he dislikes to meet Allah and Allah also abhors to meet him. (Using translation from Muslim 2684a)
[Machine] He entered and saw his son with a running forehead and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The believer dies with sweat on his forehead.'"
A funeral procession passed by Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said, "Relieved or relieving?" The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is relieved and relieving?" He said, "A believer is relieved (by death) from the troubles and hardships of the world and leaves for the Mercy of Allah, while (the death of) a wicked person relieves the people, the land, the trees, (and) the animals from him." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6512)

[Machine] From Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, when death comes to a believer, the angels of mercy come to him. When his soul is taken, it is placed in a white silk cloth and is then carried up to the gate of heaven. The angels say, 'We have never smelled a fragrance better than this.' They are told to let him relax because he was in distress. He is then asked, 'What did so-and-so do?' 'What did so-and-so do?' 'What did so-and-so, the woman, do?'"
[Machine] "The souls of the believers are gathered with the righteous, and the souls of the disbelievers are gathered with the wicked in Hadramaut."
10.8 [Machine] A Chapter on Death and Its Related Aspects of the Comfort of the Believer, His Glad Tidings, His Soul, His Deeds, and Praise for Him
[Machine] About the Prophetﷺ he said:
"When a believer passes away, angels of mercy come to him with white silk covers and say: 'Come out to the mercy of Allah.' So, his soul comes out like the sweetest fragrance of musk till they reach the nearest heaven. They ask permission to enter and Allah grants them permission. In every heaven, they ask for his permission and it is granted until they reach the seventh heaven. Then Allah says: [Record the book of My slave in 'Illiyyin and take him back to the earth, for I created them from it, and I shall return them into it and from it I shall extract them a second time] [23.12-14]. At that point, his soul is returned to his body and two angels come and make him sit up."
Regarding disbelievers, angels of punishment come to them with sackcloth and say: "Come out to the wrath of Allah." Then, his soul disperses like the most foul stench imaginable, and they take it up to the lowest heaven. They ask permission to enter and Allah does not give them permission.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should wish for death or pray for it before it comes to him. When he dies, his deeds come to an end and a believer's life only increases him in goodness."
When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (for the deceased). (Using translation from Muslim 1631)
[Machine] Al-Tabarani reported that Al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr al-Dawsi came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Mecca and said, "O Messenger of Allah, come to a fortification with a number of warriors." Abu Zubayr said, "There is a fortress on top of the mountain that is only accessible by means of the ropes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Do you have anyone behind you?" He replied, "I do not know," so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, Al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr came to him as an emigrant, accompanied by a man from his tribe. This man contracted a severe fever, which caused him great distress, so he became anxious and took a knife and slit his veins, causing himself to bleed excessively until he died. He was buried, and it was mentioned in what the sleeping person sees at night that Al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr would come to him in a good state, with his hands tied. So the sleeping person said to him, "Is so-and-so (mentioning the man who died) okay?" He replied, "Yes." He asked him, "What did you do?" He replied, "My Lord did good to me and forgave me through my migration to His Prophet ﷺ." The sleeping person asked him, "What did you do with your hands?" He replied, "My Lord said to me, 'We will not rectify from you what you have corrupted of yourself.'" Al-Tufayl then narrated this dream to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands and supplicated, saying, "O Allah, be merciful to him and his hands. O Allah, be merciful to him and his hands. O Allah, be merciful to him and his hands."

[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik say that a man died and they passed by his funeral in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and they spoke ill of him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is obligatory." Then they passed by another funeral and spoke well of him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is obligatory." Omar asked him about that and he said, "You are the witnesses of Allah on Earth."
I came to Madinah and found that sickness was occurring in it and death was widespread. I sat with 'Umar bin al-Khattab and a funeral passed by him. People spoke well of the deceased and ‘Umar said: It is guaranteed. Then another funeral passed by and people spoke well of the deceased and ‘Umar said: It is guaranteed. Then a third funeral passed by and people spoke badly of the deceased and ‘Umar said: It is guaranteed. Abul-Aswad said: What is guaranteed, O Ameer al-Mu'mineen? He said: I am saying what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿAny Muslim in whose favour four people testify, Allah will admit him to Paradise.ʿ We said: And three? He said: ʿAnd three.ʿ We said: And two? He said: ʿAnd two ʿ Then we did not ask him about one. (Using translation from Aḥmad 139)

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas and ‘Aishah that Abu Bakr kissed the Prophet ﷺ when he died. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1457)
[Machine] He heard Abu Hurayrah saying, "Abu Bakr entered the mosque while 'Umar was addressing the people. When he entered the house of the Prophet ﷺ, where he passed away, which was the house of 'Aisha, the Prophet's wife, he uncovered his face, as it was covered with a cool and fresh ink stain. He looked at his face, then he poured water on it, kissed it, and said, 'By my father, Allah will not cause you to experience death upon death. Indeed, you have experienced the death that will never be followed by another death.'"

"The Messenger of Allah came to us when we were washing his daughter. He said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in (the water) the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we informed him and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."' He said: "Hafsah said: 'We washed her three, or five, or seven times.' Umm 'Atiyyah said: 'We combed her hair into three braids."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1890)
