We were with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral passed hi and he stood up for it. When we went to carry it, we found that it was a funeral of a Jew. We, therefore said: Messenger of Allah, this is the funeral of a Jew. He said: Death is fearful event, so when you see a funeral, stand up. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3174)   

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ مَرَّتْ بِنَا جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا ذَهَبْنَا لِنَحْمِلَ إِذَا هِيَ جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيٍّ قَالَ «إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ فَزَعًا فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ جَنَازَةً فَقُومُوا»  

The Prophet ﷺ as saying: When you see a funeral, stand up for it till it leaves you behind or it is placed (on the ground). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3172)   

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا حَتَّى تُخَلِّفَكُمْ أَوْ تُوضَعَ»  

"When you see a funeral, stand up until it has passed you, or (the body) is placed (in the grave)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1916)   

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا لَهَا حَتَّى تُخَلِّفَكُمْ»  

[Machine] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a funeral of a disbeliever passes by us, should we stand for it?" He ﷺ said, "Yes, stand for it, for you are not standing for him, but for the respect of the soul-taker."  

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَمُرُّ بِنَا جَنَازَةُ الْكَافِرِ أَفَنَقُومُ لَهَا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ فَقُومُوا لَهَا فَإِنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ تَقُومُونَ لَهَا إِنَّمَا تَقُومُونَ إِعْظَامًا لِلَّذِي يَقْبِضُ الْأَرْوَاحَ»  

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to "stand at the funeral and then sit down."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ «يَقُومُ فِي الْجَنَازَةِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ»  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood on the graves until they were levelled, then he sat down."  

«قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْجَنَائِزِ حَتَّى تُوضَعَ ثُمَّ قَعَدَ»  

I saw a funeral among Banu Salimah so I stood up. Nafi’ bin Jubair said to me: Sit down, and I will tell you something decisive about this: Masʿood bin al-Hakam az-Zuraqi told me that he heard ‘Ali bin Abi Talib ؓ in Rahbatal-Koofah saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us to stand up for funerals; then later on he remained seated and told us to remain seated. شَهِدْتُ جَنَازَةً فِي بَنِي سَلِمَةَ فَقُمْتُ فَقَالَ لِي نَافِعُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ اجْلِسْ فَإِنِّي سَأُخْبِرُكَ فِي هَذَا بِثَبْتٍ حَدَّثَنِي مَسْعُودُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا بِرَحْبَةِ الْكُوفَةِ يَقُولُ لِلنَّاسِ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَأْمُرُنَا بِالْقِيَامِ فِي الْجَنَازَةِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ وَأَمَرَ بِالْجُلُوسِ»
