10. Book of Funerals
[Machine] "From his father, the Messenger of Allahﷺ used to inquire about the deceased when invited to a funeral. If praised for their goodness, he would stand and pray for them. However, if condemned, he would say to their family, 'What is your concern with them?' and he would not offer prayers for them."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was brought a funeral for him to pray on it, and he said, "Does he have any debt?" They replied, "Yes, two dinars."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a funeral for him to pray over it and he said, "Does he have any debts?" They replied, "He has two dinars of debt." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said to me, "O Messenger of Allah, those debts are upon me." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and prayed for him.
“I heard 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrate from his father that a corpse was brought to the Prophet ﷺ for him to offer the funeral prayer, and he said: 'Pray for your companion, for he owes a debt.' Abu Qatadah said: 'I will stand surely for him?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'In full?' He said: 'In full.” And the debt he owed was eighteen or nineteen Dirham.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2407)
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The believer's soul remains suspended until they have paid off their debt."
[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned the Hour (Day of Judgment), his cheeks would turn red, his anger would intensify, and his voice would rise as if he were warning of an approaching army. He would say, 'You have experienced both morning and evening.' He would also say, 'I am more deserving of the believers than themselves. Whoever leaves behind wealth, it belongs to their family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, it is my responsibility and mine alone. I am more deserving of the believers.'"
if a believer died at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he had debts, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask: “Did he leave anything with which to off his debt?” If they said yes, then he would offer the funeral prayer for him, but if they said no, then he would say: “Pray for your companion.” When Allah granted his Prophet ﷺ the conquests, he said: “I am nearer to the believers than their own selves. Whoever dies owing a debt, I will pay it off for him, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it will be for his heirs.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2415)
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic text is: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to not pray over a man who died with debt. Then a deceased person was brought and he asked, "Does he have any debt?" They replied, "Yes, two dinars."
I swear by Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over Suhail b. al-Baida' in the mosque. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3189)
[Machine] "Enter with him into the mosque until I pray upon him, and then she disapproved of that. She said, "By Allah, indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for Ibn Baydhaa in the mosque.""
I prayed behing the Prophet ﷺ over a woman who died in childbirth, and he stood opposite her waist. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3195)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the people news of death of Negus on the day on which he died, took them out to the place of prayer, drew them up in rows and said: "Allah is Most Great" four times. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3204)
“Zaid bin Arqan used to say the Takbir four times in the funeral prayer, and he said the Takbir five times for one funeral. I asked him (about that) and he said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do that.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1505)
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a dead person, he said: O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are present and those of us who are absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. O Allah, to whomsoever of us Thou givest life grant him life as a believer, and whomsoever of us Thou takest in death take him in death as a follower of Islam. O Allah, do not withhold from us the reward (of faith) and do not lead us astray after his death. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3201)
"I offered the funeral prayer behind Ibn 'Abbas. He recited Fatihat Al-Kitab and a Surah, which he recited loudly, such that we could hear him. When he finished I took him by the hand and asked him. He said: '(It is) Sunnah and the truth."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1987)
[Machine] "Yes, my nephew, it is a Sunnah (tradition) and a right."
from the Prophet ﷺ when he prayed during a funeral he would say, “allāhuma ʿabduk, wa-ibnu ʿabdik, kāna yashhadu an lā ilaha illā allāh wa-anna muḥammadun ʿabduka wa-rasūluk, wa-anta aʿlamu bihī minnī, in kāna muḥsinun fa-zid fī iḥsānihi, wa-in kāna musīʾun fa-ighfir lah, wa-lā taḥrimnā ajrah, wa-lā taftinnā baʿdah (O Allah, Your slave and the child of Your female slave is in need of Your mercy, and You are not in need of his torment. If he was pious then increase his rewards and if he was a transgressor then pardon him.)
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the funeral prayer for a man among the Muslims and I heard him say: ‘O Allah, so-and-so the son of so-and-so is in Your case and under Your protection. Protect him from the trial of the grave and the torment of the Fire, for You are the One Who keeps the promise and You are the Truth. Forgive him and have mercy on him, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1499)
"I heard the Messenger of Allah offer the funeral prayer and say: Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu waʿfu ʿanhu wa ʿafihi, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassiʿ mudkhalahu waghsilhu bi-ma'in wa thaljin wa-barad, wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama yunaqqa ath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas. Wa abdilhu daran khairan min darihi wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa qihi 'adhab al-qabri wa 'adhab an-nar (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, forgive him and keep him safe and sound, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of his sin as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a house better than his house and a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of Hell-fire)." 'Awf said: "I wished that I was that deceased person because of the supplication that the Messenger of Allah said for that deceased person." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1983)
The Prophet ﷺ said: When you pray over the dead, make a sincere supplication for him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3199)
The Prophet ﷺ said: When you pray over the dead, make a sincere supplication for him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3199)
He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats. It was said: What are the qirats? He said: They are equivalent to two huge mountains. Two other narrators added: Ibn 'Umar used to pray and then depart (without waiting for the burial of the dead). When the tradition of Abu Huraira reached him, he said:" We have lost many qirats." (Using translation from Muslim 945a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard saying: "Whoever follows a funeral from the house until they pray over it, and then follows it until it is buried, will have two Qirats, with each Qirat similar to the size of Mount Uhud. And whoever goes back after praying over it and does not follow it, will have one Qirat similar to the size of Mount Uhud."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever follows the funeral of a Muslim with faith and seeking reward, and prays for him until he is buried, then sits until he is placed in his grave, he will return with two measures of reward similar to Uhud mountain. And whoever prays for him and leaves before he is buried, he will have one measure of reward."
[Machine] The following is the translation of the Arabic phrase into English: "The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, 'If anyone dies and a hundred people of his Ummah (community) pray for him, and they intercede for him, their intercession will be accepted.'"
[Machine] O Kuraib, look at the people who have gathered for him. He said, "So I went out and saw a group of people who had gathered. I informed him and he asked, "Are they forty?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Take him out, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There is no Muslim who dies and forty men who do not associate anything with Allah gather and stand around his funeral prayer, except that Allah will intercede for them on his behalf.'"

That the Prophet prayed at the grave of a woman after she had been buried. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2025)

I said to Sha'bi: Who narrated it to you? He said: An authentic one, 'Abdullah b. 'Abbas. This is the word of a hasan hadith. In the narration of Ibn Numair (the words are): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the grave which had been newly prepared and prayed over it, and they also prayed who were behind him and he recited four takbirs. I said to 'Amir: Who narrated it to you? He said: An authentic one who saw him, i e. Ibn 'Abbas. (Using translation from Muslim 954a)

[Machine] A man used to cause harm in the mosque, and then he died. The Prophet ﷺ missed him and asked, "What happened to so-and-so?" They said, "He died." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Why didn't you inform me?" They seemed to have concealed his matter. He then said to his companions, "Go and guide me to his grave." So, he went and prayed over him and said, "Verily, these graves are filled with darkness for their inhabitants, but Allah illuminates them for them with my prayers."

“We went out with the Prophet ﷺ and when we reached Al-Baqi’, we saw a new grave. He asked about it and they said: ‘(It is) so-and-so (a woman).’ He recognized the name and said: ‘Why did you not tell me about her?’ They said: ‘You were taking a nap and you were fasting, and we did not like to disturb you.’ He said: ‘Do not do that; I do not want to see it happen again that one of you dies, while I am still among you, and you do not tell me, for my prayer for him is a mercy.’ Then he went to the grave and we lined up in rows behind him, and he said four Takbir (i.e. for the funeral prayer).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1528)

A man from the tribe of Aslam came to the Prophet ﷺ and confessed that he had committed an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ turned his face away from him till the man bore witness against himself four times. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Are you mad?" He said "No." He said, "Are you married?" He said, "Yes."
