When Abu Dhar received the news of the Advent of the Prophet ﷺ he said to his brother, "Ride to this valley (of Mecca) and try to find out the truth of the person who claims to be a prophet who is informed of the news of Heaven. Listen to what he says and come back to me." So his brother set out and came to the Prophet ﷺ and listened to some of his talks, and returned to Abu Dhar and said to him. "I have seen him enjoining virtuous behavior and saying something that is not poetry." Abu Dhar said, "You have not satisfied me as to what I wanted." He then took his journey-food and carried a waterskin of his, containing some water till be reached Mecca. He went to the Mosque and searched for the Prophet and though he did not know him, he hated to ask anybody about him. When a part of the night had passed away, ʿAli saw him and knew that he was a stranger. So when Abu Dhar saw ʿAli, he followed him, and none of them asked his companion about anything, and when it was dawn, Abu Dhar took his journey food and his water-skin to the Mosque and stayed there all the day long without being perceived by the Prophet, and when it was evening, he came back to his retiring place. ʿAli passed by him and said, "Has the man not known his dwelling place yet?" So ʿAli awakened him and took him with him and none of them spoke to the other about anything. When it was the third day. ʿAli did the same and Abu Dhar stayed with him. Then ʿAli said "Will you tell me what has brought you here?" Abu Dhar said, "If you give me a firm promise that you will guide me, then I will tell you." ʿAli promised him, and he informed ʿAli about the matter. ʿAli said, "It is true, and he is the Messenger of Allah. Next morning when you get up, accompany me, and if I see any danger for you, I will stop as if to pass water, but if I go on, follow me and enter the place which I will enter." Abu Dhar did so, and followed ʿAli till he entered the place of the Prophet, and Abu Dhar went in with him, Abu Dhar listened to some of the Prophet's talks and embraced Islam on the spot. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go back to your people and inform them (about it) till you receive my order." Abu Dhar said, "By Him in Whose Hand my life is, I will proclaim my conversion loudly amongst them (i.e. the pagans)." So he went out, and when he reached the Mosque, he said as loudly as possible, "I bear witness that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The People got up and beat him painfully. Then Al-Abbas came and knelt over him ((to protect him) and said (to the people), "Woe to you! Don't you know that this man belongs to the tribe of Ghifar and your trade to Sha'm is through their way?" So he rescued him from them. Abu Dhar again did the same the next day. They beat him and took vengeance on him and again Al-Abbas knelt over him (to protect him).

muslim:2474Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿArʿarah al-Sāmī And Muḥammad b. Ḥātim Wataqārabā Fī Siyāq al-Ḥadīth Wa-al-Lafẓ Ibn Ḥātim > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Mahdī > al-Muthanná b. Saʿīd > Abū Jamrah > Ibn ʿAbbās

Brother, ride in this valley and bring information for me about the person who claims that there comes to him information from the Heavens. Listen to his words and then come to me. So he rode on until he came to Mecca and he heard his words (the sacred words of the Holy Prophet) and then came back to Abu Dharr and said: I have seen him exhorting (people) to develop good morals and his expressions can in no way be termed as poetry. He (Abu Dharr) said: I have not been satisfied with it regarding that which I had in my mind (as I sent you). So he took up provisions for the journey and a small water-skin containing water (and set forth) until he came to Mecca. He came to the mosque (Kaʿbah) and began to look for Allah's Apostle ﷺ and he did not recognize him (the Holy Prophet) and he did not even like that he should ask about him from anyone until it was night, and he slept. ʿAli saw him and found him to be a stranger. So he went with him. He followed him but one did not make any inquiry from the other about anything until it was morning. He then brought the water and his provisions to the mosque and spent a day there, but he did not see Allah's Apostle ﷺ until it was night. He then returned to his bed, and there happened to pass ʿAli and he said: This man has not been able to find his destination until this time. He made him stand and he went with him and no one made an inquiry from his companion about anything. And when it was the third day he did the same. ʿAli made him stand up and brought him along with him. He said: By Him, besides Whom there is no god, why don't you tell me (the reason) which brought you here to this town? He said: (I shall do this) provided you hold me promise and a covenant that you would guide me aright. He then did that. He (ʿAli) said: Verily, he is truthful and he is a Messenger of Allah ﷺ and when it is morning, follow me and if I would say anything from which I would sense fear about you I would stand (in a manner) as if I was throwing water and if I move on, you then follow me until I get in (some house). He did that and I followed him until he came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He entered (the house) of Allah's Apostle ﷺ along with him and listened to his words and embraced Islam at this very place. Allah's Apostle ﷺ said to him: Go to your people and inform them until my command reaches you. Thereupon he said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, I shall say to the people of Mecca this thing at the top of my voice. So he set forth until he came to the mosque and then spoke at the top of his voice (saying): I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The people attacked him and made him fall down when al-ʿAbbas came and he leaned over him and said: Woe be upon you, don't you know that he is from amongst the tribe of Ghifar and your trading route to Syria passes through (the settlements of this tribe), and he rescued him. He (Abu Dharr) did the same on the next day and they (the Meccans) again attacked him and al-ʿAbbas leaned upon him and he rescued him.

Hadith Jibril on Iman, Islam, and Ihsan

muslim:8a[Chain 1] Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr b. Ḥarb > Wakīʿ > Kahmas > ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar [Chain 2] ʿUbaydullāh b. Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī And Hadhā Ḥadīthuh from my father > Kahmas > Ibn Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar

the first man who discussed Qadar (Divine Decree) in Baṣrah was Maʿbad al-Juhanī. I along with Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥimyarī set out for pilgrimage or for ʿUmrah and said: Should it so happen that we come into contact with one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we shall ask him about what is talked about Qadar. Accidentally we came across ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, while he was entering the mosque. My companion and I surrounded him. One of us ˹stood˺ on his right and the other stood on his left. I expected that my companion would authorize me to speak. I, therefore, said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, there have appeared some people in our land who recite the Quran and pursue knowledge. And then after talking about their affairs, added: They claim that there is no such thing as Qadar and events are not predestined. He said: When you happen to meet such people tell them that I have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in no way responsible for my ˹belief˺. ʿAbdullāh b ʿUmar swore by Allah: If any one of them had with him gold equal to the bulk of ˹the mountain˺ Uḥud and spent it ˹for the sake of Allah˺, Allah would not accept it unless he affirmed his faith in the Qadar.

He further said: My father, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, told me: One day we were sitting in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when there appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes. His hair was extraordinarily black. There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him. At last, he sat with the Prophet ﷺ. He knelt before him placed his palms on his thighs,

then said: Muhammad, inform me about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Islam implies that: (1) you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and (2) you establish prayer, (3) pay Zakat, (4) observe the fast of Ramadan, and (5) perform pilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough ˹to bear the expense of˺ the journey.” ˹The inquirer˺ said: You have told the truth. ˹ʿUmar˺ said: It amazed us that he would put the question and then he would himself verify the truth.

˹The inquirer˺ said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He replied: “That (1) you affirm your faith in Allah, (2) in His angels, (3) in His Books, (4) in His Apostles, (5) in the Day of Judgment, and (6) you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil.” ˹The inquirer˺ said: You have told the truth.

˹The inquirer˺ again said: Inform me about Iḥsān (excellence in deeds). He said: ”That (1) you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, (2) for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you.”

˹The inquirer˺ again said: Inform me about the Hour (of the Last Day). He remarked: ”One who is asked knows no more than the one who is inquiring.” ˹The inquirer˺ said: Tell me some of its indications. He said: ”That (1) the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and master, that (2) you will find barefooted, destitute goat herders vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings.”

˹ʿUmar˺ said: Then ˹the inquirer˺ went on his way but I stayed with (the Prophet) for a long while. He then, said to me: "ʿUmar, do you know who this inquirer was?" I replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remarked: "He was Jibrīl (Angel Gabriel). He came to you in order to teach you in your religion."

[Machine] "So, I heard Abu Dharr saying that the Prophet ﷺ stood up one night in the prayer of Isha and prayed with the people. Then some of his companions lagged behind praying. When he saw them standing up and lagging behind, he left to his camel. When he saw that the people had left the place, he returned to his place and prayed. I came and stood behind him, so he beckoned to me with his right hand, so I stood on his right, then Ibn Mas'ud came and stood behind me and Abu Dharr beckoned to him with his left hand, so he stood on his left. So the three of us prayed, each man praying for himself and reciting from the Quran what Allah willed. And he stood with a verse from the Quran and repeated it until morning prayer came. After we became morning, I beckoned to Abdullah bin Mas'ud and asked him what he wanted to do yesterday? Ibn Mas'ud said, 'I do not ask him anything until he tells me.' So I said, 'By my father and mother, you stood with a verse from the Quran and you have the Quran?' If one of us had done this and we found him on it, I would have prayed for my Ummah.' He said, 'So what did you respond to him or what did he say to you?' I said, 'I responded with something that, if he had realized it, many of them would have refrained from leaving the prayer.' He said, 'Shouldn't I give glad tidings to the people?' I said, 'Yes.' So I left hurling stones near people and Umar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you send them with this, they will be disinclined from worship.' So he called him back and he went back. And that is the verse, 'If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You Who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' (Quran 5:118).

[Machine] Omar, I am staying the night if God wills. I am warning them against those people who oppress them in their affairs," said Abdulrahman. So I said, "Oh Amir al-Mu'minin, do not do that on this day. The season gathers the masses and their chaos. I fear that you might say something that they would take and fly off with, and not put it in its proper place. Wait until you enter the city, as it is the abode of migration, Sunnah, and faith. Purify yourself with the scholars and their leaders. Say what you want to say in a way that they understand it and put it in its proper place," said Omar. "If I enter the city safely, I will speak to the people there in the first gathering I establish, if God wills," he added. According to Ibn Abbas, when I arrived at the city, I migrated to Jumaa and found Sa'id ibn Zayd had already proceeded me in migration. He sat next to the pulpit and I sat next to him. Omar did not ascend the pulpit, so I ascended it and performed the prayer of witness and praised Allah for what He deserves. Then he said, "As for what follows, I will say something to you which I do not know if it will remain with you until my death. Whoever understands it and preserves it, let him speak it wherever his journey ends. And whoever fears that he will not understand it, then it is not allowed for anyone to accuse me of lying. Indeed, Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed the book to him. In what was revealed to him was the verse of stoning, so we recited it and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried it out, and we carried it out after him. I fear that if a long time passes, someone might say, ‘We do not find the stoning in the book of Allah,’ and they will go astray by abandoning an obligation that Allah has revealed. Indeed, stoning is prescribed in the book of Allah for the one who committed adultery, if he is married, be it from the males or females, when clear evidence is established or if a confession is made."

The first to speak on Divine decree in al-Basrah was Maʿbad al Juhani. I and Humaid b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Himyari proceeded to perform Hajj or ʿUmrah. We said : would that we meet any of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that we could ask him about what they say with regard to divine decree. So Allah helped us to meet ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar who was entering the mosque. So I and my companion surrounded him, and I thought that my companion would entrust me the task of speaking to him. Then I said : Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, there appeared on our side some people who recite the Qur'an and are engaged in the hair-splitting of knowledge. They conceive that there is no Divine decree and everything happens freely without predestination. He said : When you meet those people, tell them that I am free from them, and they are free from me. By Him by Whom swears ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar, if one of them has gold equivalent to Uhud and he spends it, Allah will not accept it from him until he believes in Divine decree. He then said : ‘Umar b. Khattab transmitted to me a tradition, saying : One day when we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a man with very white clothing and very black hair came up to us. No mark of travel was visible on him, and we did not recognize him. Sitting down beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, leaning his knees against his and placing his hands on his thighs, he said : tell me, Muhammad, about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said : Islam means that you should testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle, that you should observe prayer, pay Zakat, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the house (i.e., Kaʿbah), If you have the means to go. He said : You have spoken the truth. We were surprised at his questioning him and then declaring that he spoke the truth. He said : Now tell me about faith. He replied : It means that you should believe in Allah, his angels, his Books, his Apostles and the last day, and that you should believe in the decreeing both of good and evil. He said : You have spoken the truth. He said : now tell me about doing good (ihsan). He replied: It means that you should worship Allah as though you are seeing him; if you are not seeing him, he is seeing you. He said: Now tell me about the hour. He replied : The one who is asked about it is no better informed than the one who is asking. He said : Then tell me about its signs. He replied : That a maidservant should beget her mistress, and that you should see barefooted, naked, poor men and shepherds exalting themselves in buildings. ‘Umar said : He then went away, and I waited for three days, then he said : Do you know who the questioner was, ʿUmar? I replied : Allah and his Apostle know best. He said : He was Gabriel who came to you to teach you your religion. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4695)
