13. Anonymous of the Companions (16/19)
I and two of my companions were so much afflicted by hunger that we had lost our power of seeing and hearing. We presented ourselves (as guests) to the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, but none amongst them would entertain us. So we came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ, and he took us to his residence and there were three goats. Allah's Apostle ﷺ said: Milk these for us. So we milked them and every person amongst us drank his share and we set aside the share of Allah's Apostle ﷺ. (It was his habit) to come during the night and greet (the people present there) in a manner that would not wake up one in sleep but make one who was awake hear it. He would then go to the mosque and say prayer, then go to the milk and drink it. Miqdad added: One night the Satan came to me when I had taken my share, and he said: Muhammad has gone to the Ansar, who would offer him hospitality and he would get what is with them, and he has no need for this draught (of milk). So I took (that milk) and drank it, and when it had penetrated deeply in my stomach and I was certain that there was no way out (but to digest it), the Satan aroused (my sense of) remorse and said: Woe be to thee! what have you done? You have taken the drink reserved for Muhammad! When he would come and he would not find it, he would curse you, and you would be ruined, and thus there would go (waste) this world and the Hereafter (for) you. There was a sheet over me; as I placed (pulled) it upon my feet, my head was uncovered and as I placed it upon my head, my feet were uncovered, and I could not sleep, but my two companions had gone to sleep for they had not done what I had done. There came Allah's Apostle ﷺ, and he greeted as he used to greet (by saying as-Salamu 'Alaikum). He then came to the mosque and observed prayer and then came to his drink (milk) and uncovered it, but did not find anything in it. He raised his head towards the sky, and I said (to myself) that he (the Holy Prophet) was going to invoke curse upon me and I would be thus ruined; but he (the Holy Prophet) said: Allah, feed him who fed me and give drink to him who provided me drink. I held tight the sheet upon myself (and when he had supplicated), I took hold of the knife and went to the goats (possessed by the Holy Prophet) so that I may slauhter one for Messenger of Allah ﷺ which was the fattest amongst them, and in fact all of them were milch goats; then I took hold of the vessel which belonged to the family of Messenger of Allah ﷺ in which they used to milk and drink therefrom, and milked them in that until it swelled up with foam. I came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: Have you taken your share of the milk during the night? I said: Drink it. and he drank it; he then handed over (the vessel) to me and I said: Messenger of Allah, drink it, and he drank it and handed over (the vessel) to me again, I then perceived that Allah's Apostle ﷺ had been satiated and I had got his blessings. I burst into laughter (so much) so that I fell upon the ground, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Miqdad, it must be one of your mischiefs. I said: Messenger of Allah, this affair of mind is like this and this. and I have done so. Thereupon. Allah's Apostle ﷺ said: This is nothing but a mercy from Allah. Why is it that you did not give me an opportunity so that we should have awakened our two friends and they would have got their share (of the milk)? I said: By Him Who has sent you with Truth. I do not mind whatever you give (to them), and whatever the (other) people happen to get, when I had got it along with you from among the people. (Using translation from Muslim 2055a)

"I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'On the Day of Judgement, the sun will be drawn near the servants, until it has come a mile or two (away).'" Sulaim bin 'Amir said: " I do not know if it is miles that refer to distance on the land, or Al-Mil which is used to apply Kuhl for the eyes." He (the Prophet ﷺ): "The sun will melt them, until they will be in sweat according to their deeds. Among them one will be covered up to his ankles, and among them will be one who is covered up to his knees, and among them will be one who is covered up to his waist, and among them will be one who is bridled with it.' I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ indicating with his hand toward his mouth, meaning that one would be bridled with it.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2421)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying: "There will not remain on the face of the earth a house made of mud or wood, except that Allah will enter it with the word of Islam, either by honor or humiliation. Allah will either honor them by making them among its people, or humiliate them by making them follow it."
[Machine] On the authority of Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad and Abu Umamah, they said: "Verily, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, when a ruler seeks bribery among the people, he corrupts them.'"
[Machine] Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad said, "I do not judge a person as good or bad until I see what results from their actions, meaning after observing their behavior. Someone asked, "And what have you observed?" He replied, "I have heard the Prophet ﷺ saying that the heart of the son of Adam changes more swiftly than the boiling of a pot when anger is present."
That Al-Miqdad bin ʿAmr Al-Kindi, who was an ally of Bani Zuhra and one of those who fought the battle of Badr together with Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him that he said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Suppose I met one of the infidels and we fought, and he struck one of my hands with his sword and cut it off and then took refuge in a tree and said, "I surrender to Allah (i.e. I have become a Muslim),' could I kill him, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, after he had said this?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You should not kill him." Al- Miqdad said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! But he had cut off one of my two hands, and then he had uttered those words?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You should not kill him, for if you kill him, he would be in your position where you had been before killing him, and you would be in his position where he had been before uttering those words." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4019)

[Machine] When we arrived in Medina, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided us into groups of ten, with each group staying in a different house. I was part of the group in which the Prophet ﷺ stayed. He said, "We only had one sheep from which we obtained milk." He said, "Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to our house, we would drink and leave some for him. One night, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taking a long time to come, we said, 'Maybe someone invited him.' I drank the milk and when he came later that night, he entered the house. When I drank the milk, I couldn't sleep. He said, 'When he entered, he said his Salaam and then did not tighten his belt. He looked at the container, and when he didn't see anything, he remained silent for a while and then said, 'O Allah, feed whoever fed us tonight.' Then I got up, took a knife, and went to the sheep. He asked, 'What are you doing?' I said, 'I am slaughtering it.' He said, 'No, bring it to me.' So I brought it to him, and he wiped its udder, and something came out. Then he drank and went to sleep."
[Machine] He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a man who approaches his wife and experiences sexual discharge. He said, "If someone experiences that, let him wash his private parts and perform ablution for prayer."
I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying in front of a stick, a pillar, or a tree, without having it opposite his right or left eyebrow, and not facing it directly. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 693)
[Machine] "Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed towards a pillar, a wooden plank, or something similar, he would not fix his sight on it, rather he would place it on his left eyebrow."
[Machine] I arrived in the city with my companion, and we encountered people who did not give us anything. So we went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned it to him. He took us to his house, and he had four female goats. He said, "Mikdad, milk them and divide them into four parts. Give each person their portion." So I did that, and one night I raised my portion to the Prophet ﷺ . He held it and hesitated, and I lay on my bed. My soul said to me, "The Prophet ﷺ has visited the family of the Ansar and if you get up and drink this drink, it will remain in me until I get up and drink my portion." So when it entered my stomach and settled, I said to myself, "The Prophet ﷺ is now coming hungry and thirsty, and he can't see anything in the jug." So I covered my face with a cloth and the Prophet ﷺ came and greeted in such a way that he could be heard by the awake and would not awaken the sleeping. He removed the cloth, but he didn't see anything. Then he raised his head to the sky and said, "O Allah, give drink to those who have given me drink and feed those who have fed me." I then seized the knife and approached the goats. I touched one of them to see which one was the fattest and it was full. I looked at the others and they were full as well. I looked at all of them and they were all full. So I milked them into a container and brought it to him. I said to him, "Drink." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Give some news, O Mikdad." So I said, "Drink some, then the news." He said, "Some of your comrades, O Mikdad." So he drank and said, "Drink." So I said, "Drink, O Prophet of Allah." He drank until his sides expanded. Then I took it and drank it, then I informed him of the news. The Prophet ﷺ said, "That's great." So I said, "This is what happened." He ﷺ said, "This is a blessing that has descended from the sky. Why did you not inform me so that I could give drink to your companions?" I said, "When I drank the blessing, I didn't care about whoever made a mistake."

What is the matter with you? And he said: Verily, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When you see those who shower (undue) praise (upon others), throw dust upon their faces. (Using translation from Muslim 3002b)
[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have been commanded to sprinkle dust on the faces of the flatterers." Sufyan once stood up and Al-Miqdad said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Sprinkle dust on the faces of the flatterers.'" Az-Zubair said, "As for Al-Miqdad, he has fulfilled what was required of him."
[Machine] Ali said: "I am an impure man, and I am ashamed to ask him for the hand of his daughter. So he said to one of them, either Ammar or Al-Miqdad: 'Ata' named him for me, Aishah (his daughter), so I forgot him. Ask the Messenger of Allah, so I asked him.' He said: 'That is pre-seminal fluid, so he should wash that from it.' I said: 'What is to be done with it?' He said: 'He mentions Allah's name and performs ablution, performing a complete ablution like his ablution for prayer, then he sprinkles it in his private part or in his clothes.'"
A man came and praised ‘Uthman in his face, al-Miqdad b. Al-Aswad took dust and threw it on his face, saying : The Apostle of Allah ﷺ said : When you see those who are given to praising people, throw dust in their faces. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4804)
[Machine] A man came to Uthman and praised him on his face, so Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad started sprinkling dust on his face and saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us that when we meet those who flatter others, we should throw dust on their faces."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us that we should throw dust upon the faces of those who shower too much praise. (Using translation from Muslim 3002a)
Ali ibn AbuTalib commanded him to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what a man should do when he wants to have intercourse with his wife and the prostatic fluid comes out (at this moment). (He said): I am ashamed of consulting him because of the position of his daughter. Al-Miqdad said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. He said: When any of you finds, he should wash his private part, and perform ablution as he does for prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 207)
[Machine] A man started praising Uthman, then he mentioned something similar to the meaning of Sufyan's narration.
If I encountered a person amongst the infidels (in the battlefield) and he attacked me and struck me and cut off one of my hands with the sword. Then he (in order to protect himself from me) took shelter of a tree and said: I become Muslim for Allah's sake. Messenger of Allah, can I kill him after he had uttered this? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not kill him. I (the narrator) said: Messenger of Allah, he cut off my hand and uttered this after amputating it; should I then kill him? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Don't kill him, for I you kill him, verily he would be in a position where you had been before killing him and verily you would be in a position where he had been before uttering (kalima). (Using translation from Muslim 95a)
[Machine] He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if a man and I have a dispute, and he mentions the hadith except that he said 'Should I kill him or leave him?'"
13.85 [Machine] Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Salam
[Machine] I heard Abu al-Hakam talking more than once about Shahr ibn Hawshab, who said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in Quba', he said, 'Certainly, Allah has praised you in regard to purification. Would you like me to inform you how?' He was referring to His statement, "In it are men who love to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who purify themselves." (Quran 9:108) They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we find the command of istinja (cleansing with water after relieving oneself) written for us in the Torah.'"

[Machine] The passage translates to: "Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam narrated the hadith of the neighbor."

13.86 [Machine] Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam
[Machine] He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: Are we better or those who come after us? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If one of them were to spend a mountain of gold, it would not reach the measure of one handspan of any of you, nor even half of it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me Yusuf and made me sit in his chamber.

[Machine] He said, "I heard Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me and wiped over my head."

13.87 [Machine] Al-Walid bin al-Walid
[Machine] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I feel loneliness." He said, "When you go to your bed, say, 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment and from the evil of His servants and the whispers of the devils, and from their presence.' Indeed, it will not harm you, and it is better for you not to approach it."
13.88 [Machine] Qais bin Saad Bin Obadah
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us before the obligation of Zakat was revealed. Then Zakat was revealed, and we were neither prohibited from it nor commanded to do it, yet we still adhered to it. I asked him about fasting on the day of Ashura, and he said: the messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to fast on this day before the obligation of Ramadan was revealed. Then Ramadan was revealed, and we were neither commanded to fast on Ashura nor prohibited from it, yet we still fast on that day.
[Machine] Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever strengthens his authority through disobedience to Allah, Allah will weaken his plot on the Day of Judgment."
"Sahl bin Hunaif and Qais bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah were in Al-Qadisiyyah when a funeral passed by them, so they stood up and it was said to them: 'It is one of the local people.' They said: 'A funeral passed the Messenger of Allah and he stood up, and it was said to him: It Is a Jew. He said: 'Is it not a soul?"' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1921)
Qais bin Sa'ad said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined Sadaqatul-Fitr upon is before (the command of) Zakat was revealed. He neither ordered us (to pay) nor forbade us (from paying it), so we did it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1828)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came to us and we prepared a basin for him to perform ablution. He washed himself and then we brought him a towel and a garment, which he covered himself with. I could see the trace of the garment on his shoulder. Then we brought him a donkey for him to ride. The owner of the donkey said, "Shouldn't the front of the donkey be more deserving of the Messenger's company?" We said, "O Messenger of Allah, the donkey belongs to you."
13.89 [Machine] Saad ibn Abada
[Machine] To the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: "My mother has passed away, so should I give charity on her behalf?" He replied: "Yes." He then asked: "Which charity is the best?" He said: "Giving water to drink." He said: "That is the watering place of the family of Sa'd in Madinah." Shu'bah said: "So I asked Qatadah, who says that it is the watering place of the family of Sa'd?" Al-Hasan said: "Yes."
"My mother has died and she had a vow to fulfill. Will it suffice if I free a slave on her behalf?" He said: "Free a slave on behalf of your mother." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3656)
[Machine] Sa'id Al-Sarrāf, or Sa'id Al-Sarrāf Ibn Isḥāq ibn Sa'd ibn 'Ubādah, narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily, this neighborhood of the Ansar is a test; their love is faith, and their hatred is hypocrisy." 'Affān said: "He narrated it to us once, and there is no doubt that he affirmed it to me first regarding its authenticity."

[Machine] "Where did you come from? And I said, from Mount Tur. He said, if I had met you before you left for it, I would not have let you go there. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Do not undertake a journey except to three mosques: the Sacred Mosque, my mosque, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Mosque of Elijah.'"

Abu Busrat said, 'I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'"

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to his companions, "For a man to commit adultery with ten women is easier for him than to commit adultery with his neighbor's wife." Then he said, "What do you say about theft?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger have made it forbidden, so it is forbidden." He said, "For a man to steal from ten acres is easier for him than to steal from his neighbor."

Bukair cried and Al-Hasan told me that Abu Rafa’ was a Copt."

[Machine] From Abu Rafea, a servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said: We went out with Ali when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him with his banner. When he approached the fortress, his family came out to him and fought him. A man from the Jews struck him and knocked his shield out of his hand. Ali then took a door that was near the fortress and defended himself with it. He continued to fight with it in his hand until Allah granted him victory. Then he threw it from his hand when he finished. I saw myself with a group of seven, and I was the eighth. We were all striving to turn that door, but we couldn't turn it.

So, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, does the sheep have any other forearm?" He said, "If you had remained silent, I would have kept taking forearms from it. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was fond of raising his forearms."
