What is the matter with you? And he said: Verily, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When you see those who shower (undue) praise (upon others), throw dust upon their faces. (Using translation from Muslim 3002b)   

أحمد:٢٣٨٢٣ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ أَبِي شَبِيبٍ قَالَ

جَعَلَ رَجُلُ يَمْدَحُ عَامِلًا لِعُثْمَانَ فَعَمَدَ الْمِقْدَادُ فَجَعَلَ يَحْثُو التُّرَابَ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ

ahmad:23827 – Wakīʿ And ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Sufyān > Manṣūr > Ibrāhīm > Hammām b. al-Ḥārith

[Machine] A man came to Uthman and praised him on his face, so Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad started sprinkling dust on his face and saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us that when we meet those who flatter others, we should throw dust on their faces."  

أحمد:٢٣٨٢٧ – حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ فِي وَجْهِهِ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ يَحْثُو فِي وَجْهِهِ التُّرَابَ وَيَقُولُ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا لَقِينَا الْمَدَّاحِينَ أَنْ نَحْثُوَ فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ

[Machine] A man came and praised Uthman, so Mikdad stood up and dusted his face with dirt. Uthman asked him, "What is wrong with you?" He replied, "As for me, I do not leave anything I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Dust the faces of those who praise excessively.'"  

الطبراني:١٧٧٦٣ – حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَمَدَحَ عُثْمَانَ فَقَامَ الْمِقْدَادُ يَحْثُو فِي وَجْهِهِ التُّرَابَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ مَا لَكَ؟ قَالَ أَمَّا أَنَا فَلَا أَدَعُ شَيْئًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «احْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِ الْمَدَّاحِينَ التُّرَابَ»
