Collected by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, Aḥmad, Ḥākim, Ibn Ḥibbān, Ṭabarānī, Nasāʾī's Kubrá, Bayhaqī, al-Adab al-Mufrad, Bazzār, SuyūṭīThe Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out in the year of al-Hudaibbiyyah with over ten hundreds of Companions and when he came to Dhu al Hulaifah. He garlanded and marked the sacrificial animals, and entered the sacred state of Umrah. He then went on with the tradition. The Prophet moved on and when he came to the mountain, pass by which one descends (to Mecca) to them, his riding-beast knelt down, and the people said twice: Go on, go on, al-Qaswa has become jaded. The Prophet (May peace be upon him) said: She has not become jaded and that is not a characteristic of hers, but He Who restrained the elephant has restrained her. He then said: By Him in Whose hand my soul is, they will not ask any me good thing by which they honor which God has made sacred without my giving them it. He then urged her and she leaped up and he turned aside from them, and stopped at the farthest side of al-Hudaibiyyah at a pool with little water. Meanwhile Budail bin Warqa al-Khuza’I came, and ‘Urwah bin Mas’ud joined him. He began to speak to the Prophet ﷺ. Whenever he spoke to the Prophet ﷺ, he caught his beard. Al Mughriah bin Shu’bah was standing beside the Prophet ﷺ.He had a sword with him, wearing a helmet. He (Al Mughriah) struck his (‘Urwah’s) hand with the lower end of his sheath, and said: Keep away your hand from his beard. ‘Urwah then raised his hand and asked: Who is this? They replied: Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah. He said: O treacherous one! Did I not use my offices in your treachery? In pre-Islamic days Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah accompanied some people and murdered them, and took their property. He then came (to the Prophet) and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: As for Islam we accepted it, but as to the property, as it has been taken by treachery, we have no need of it. He went on with the tradition the Prophet ﷺ said: Write down: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has decided. He then narrated the tradition. Suhail then said: And that a man will not come to you from us, even if he follows your religion, without you sending him back to us. When he finished drawing up the document, the Prophet ﷺ said to his Companions: Get up and sacrifice and then shave. Thereafter some believing women who were immigrants came. (Allah sent down: O yea who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants). Allah most high forbade them to send them back, but ordered them to restore the dower. He then returned to Medina. Abu Basir a man from the Quraish (who was a Muslim), came to him. And they sent (two men) to look for him; so he handed him over to the two men. They took him away, and when they reached Dhu Al Hulaifah and alighted to eat some dates which they had, Abu Basir said to one of the men : I swear by Allah so-and-so, that I think this sword of yours is a fine one; the other drew the sword and said : Yes I have tried it. Abu Basir said: Let me look at it. He let him have it and he struck him till he died, whereupon the other fled and came to Medina, and running entered the mosque. The Prophet ( may peace be upon him) said: This man has seen something frightful. He said: I swear by Allah that my Companion has been killed, and im as good as dead. Abu Basir then arrived and said: Allah has fulfilled your covenant. You returned me to them, but Allah saved me from them. The Prophet ﷺ said: Woe to his mother, stirrer up of war! Would that he had someone (i.e. some kinsfolk). When he heard that he knew that he would send him back to them, so he went out and came to the seashore. Abu Jandal escaped and joined Abu Basir till a band of them collected.

“And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon...” up to His saying: “...and thus become of the unjust.” [6:52] He said: “Aqra’ bin Habis At-Tamimi and ‘Uyainah bin Hisn Al-Fazri came and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with Suhaib, Bilal, ‘Ammar and Khabbab, sitting with some of the believers who were weak (i.e., socially). When they saw them around the Prophet ﷺ they looked down on them. They took him aside and said: ‘We want you to sit with us along, so that the ‘Arabs will recognize our superiority. If the delegations of the Arabs come to you we will feel ashamed if the Arabs see us with these slaves. So, when we come to you, make them get up from your presence, then when we have finished, sit with them if you wish.’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘Write a document for us (binding you to that).’ So he called for a piece of paper and he called ‘Ali to write, and we were sitting in a corner. Then Jibra’il (as), came down and said: “And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon seeking His Face. You are accountable for them in nothing, and they are accountable for you in nothing, that you may turn them away, and thus become of the unjust.” [6:52] Then he mentioned Aqra’ bin Habis and ‘Uyaynah bin Hisn, then he said: “Thus We have tried some of them with others, that they might say: ‘Is it these (poor believers) whom Allah has favored from amongst us?’ Does not Allah know best those who are grateful.” [6:53] Then he said: “When those who believe in Our Ayat come to you, say: Salamun ‘Alaykum (peace be on you); your Lord has written (prescribed) mercy for Himself”.” [6:54] He said: “Then we got so close to him that our knees were touching his, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with us. When he wanted to get up, he stood up and left us. Then Allah revealed: “And keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them,” – and do not sit with the nobles – “desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance,” – meaning ‘Uyainah and Aqra’ – “and who follows his own lusts, and those affair (deeds) has been lost” [18:28] He said: ‘May they be doomed.’ He said: ‘May ‘Uyainah and Aqra’ be doomed.’ Then he made the parable for them of two men and the parable of this world. Khabbab said: “We used to sit with the Prophet ﷺ and if the time came for him to leave, we would get up and leave him, then he would leave.”

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent ten years following the pilgrims in their dwellings during the pilgrimage season, at Majannah, at 'Ukaz, and in their dwellings in Mina. He would say, "Who will give me shelter? Who will assist me until I deliver the messages of my Lord, and paradise will be theirs?" He did not find anyone who would assist and shelter him. Even when a man would leave Muzdalifah or Yemen and come to their people, they would say, "Beware of the youth from Quraysh, he will lead you astray," while he walked among them and called them to Allah, pointing at them with his fingers. Until Allah sent us to him from Yathrib, a man came to him and believed in him, and he recited the Quran to him, then he returned to his family and they accepted Islam. Soon, there was no house in the dwellings of Yathrib except that it had a group of Muslims who openly displayed Islam. Then Allah completed His favor upon us, and we gathered together, seventy men from our community, and we said, "How long will the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be expelled in the mountains of Makkah and live in fear?" So we set out until we reached him during the pilgrimage season, and we made an appointment with the people of Aqabah. His uncle, Al-Abbas, said to him, "O nephew, I do not know who these people are who have come to you. I am familiar with the people of Yathrib, so we gathered with them, one man and two men. When Al-Abbas saw our faces, he said, 'These are unknown people, they are young.' We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, why should we swear allegiance to you?' He said, 'Swear allegiance to me on hearing and obeying, in times of both energy and laziness, in easy and difficult times, in promoting what is good and forbidding what is evil, and in defending me if I come to Yathrib, even if it means denying yourselves, your wives, and your children. Paradise will be yours.' So we gave him our pledge, and As'ad bin Zurarah, who was the youngest of the seventy, took his hand and said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, remove your hand from us. We will not abandon this pledge, nor will we revoke it.' So we went to him one by one, and each of us pledged allegiance to him on the terms of al-Abbas, and in return, he bestowed paradise upon us."

[Machine] That Ibrahim, when he migrated to the land of Sham and they expelled him from there, he departed and with him was Sarah. She said to him, "Indeed, I have gifted myself to you." Then Allah inspired to him to marry her, and it was the first revelation that was sent to him, and Lot believed in it, as did his people in his lineage. He said, "Indeed, I am migrating to my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." So they expelled him from Babylonia to the sacred land until he reached Harran, and they expelled him from there until they brought him to the Jordan River, which contained a strong giant among the giants, but Allah destroyed him. Then Ibrahim returned to Sham, and with him was Lot. Allah informed Lot and sent him as a messenger and a caller to Allah in the cities known as the "mou'tafaqat", with Sodom being the greatest among them, followed by Amoud, Aram, Sa'our, and Sabour. The people of these cities numbered four thousand thousand men. Lot stayed in Sodom for twenty-five years, commanding them, forbidding them, and inviting them to Allah and to worship Him, and he left what they were engaged in of immorality and abominations. It was obligatory on Lot to offer hospitality to his guests, just as it was obligatory on Ibrahim and Ismael. But his people did not host anyone, rather, they only approached the men from the worlds and called the women. Allah denounced them for this through the tongue of their Prophet in the Quran, saying, "Do you approach men among the worlds and leave what your Lord has created for you as wives?" Then Wahb and Abdullah bin Abbas mentioned that which led them to have relations with men without women. They had gardens and fruits in their homes, as well as gardens and fruits on the outskirts of the road. Then they were afflicted with severe drought and hunger. So some of them said to others, "If you refrain from giving away your fruits to the travelers, you will have provisions for yourselves." They asked how they could do that, so some of them suggested to abduct any stranger they found in their land and marry him, claiming him as their own. They would take him and grab him. Thus, whenever people came upon them, they did this to them. This became their practice until Iblis went to those mountains in the form of a beautiful and radiant young boy. The people saw him and admired him, so they adored him, married him, took him, and grabbed him. Then he left. People would not come to them except that they would do the same to them. This became their practice until Allah sent Lot to them, forbidding them from doing this and warning them of punishment. They sought his forgiveness, and he said, "O my people, you have committed the obscenity that no one in the worlds has committed before you." Then the rest of the narration continues as narrated by Ibn Abbas, but it was not mentioned by Al-Dhahabi in his summary.

[Machine] Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ spent ten years following people in their homes during the season of Manazil, Muzdalifah, and 'Ukaz. He would ask, "Who will shelter me? Who will support me until I convey the messages of my Lord, and for him is Paradise?" Yet, he would find no one to support him or shelter him. And there would be a man who would leave from Egypt or Yemen to bring him back to his people, and they would warn him, "Beware of the young Quraishi boy who will tempt you." He would walk among their tents, calling them to Allah Almighty, and they would point at him with their fingers. Then Allah sent us from Yathrib (Medina), and the man from among us would meet him, believe in him, and teach him the Quran. He would then return to his people, and they would embrace Islam until there was not a single house among the houses of the Ansar without Muslims in it. We sent a message to Allah, and He allowed us to gather and meet. We said, "How long will the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be expelled in the mountains of Makkah and live in fear?" So we set out until we reached him in Muzdalifah during the pilgrimage season. We made an agreement with him at 'Aqabah, and his uncle, al-'Abbas, said to him, "O son of my brother, I do not know who these people who have come to you are. I have knowledge of the people of Yathrib, so we gathered with a man, and when al-'Abbas looked at our faces, he said, 'These are people we do not know. They are young men.' So we said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do we pledge allegiance to you on?' He said, 'Pledge allegiance to me on hearing and obeying, in times of energy and times of laziness, on spending in times of ease and times of hardship, on commanding good and forbidding evil, and on not blaming us for what we do in the name of Allah. Pledge allegiance to me on supporting me when I come to you, and withholding from what you withhold from yourselves, your wives, and your children. And for you is Paradise.' So we pledged allegiance to him, and Sa'd bin Zurarah, the youngest among the seventy, took his hand and said, 'O people of Yathrib, none of us withholds his hand from this pledge, and we will never quit it.' So we went to him, each man one by one, and he took our pledge to grant us Paradise."

[Machine] He gathered them all that day, and it was nothing but existence until the Day of Resurrection. Then He made them souls, then formed them and gave them the power of speech. And He took from them the covenant and the pledge, and He made them testify upon themselves, "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we testify." [This] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were unaware of this." Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?" [Allah] said, "I swear by Myself, and I bear witness on you all the heavens and the earths, and I bear witness upon your father Adam, 'Am I not your Lord?' They said, 'Yes, we testify.' [This] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, 'Indeed, we were unaware of this.' Or lest you should say, 'It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?' He said, "Indeed, I bear witness over all of you that I am free from whatever you associate with Me. Indeed, the Messengers will come to you with My reminders and My covenant, and they will present My Books to you." They said, "We bear witness that You are our Lord and our God. You have no Lord besides You, and we have no god besides You." And their father Adam raised them, so He looked at them, and He saw richness and poverty, beauty and otherwise. He said, "My Lord, if You had balanced Your servants." He said, "I love to return the gratitude." And among them were seen prophets like bright lamps. They were given a separate covenant in regards to Prophet-hood and Messengership. This is the saying of Allah, the Exalted, "[And mention] when We took from the prophets their covenant and from you and from Noah." (33:7) And His saying, "So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah." (30:30) And His saying, "This is a warner of the warners of old." (53:56) And His saying, "And We had not found for most of them any covenant, but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient." (7:102) And His saying, "Then We sent following their footsteps Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them except that they did so seeking the approval of Allah." So they did not observe it with due observance. (57:27) He knew in His knowledge those who would deny what He would affirm and those who would affirm what He would deny. So the soul of 'Isa was among those souls to which the covenant was taken in the time of Adam. And that soul was then sent to Maryam when He said, "Settle in a place of worship wherein the sun does not rise, and you take a veil from them." So We sent to her Our soul, and it manifested to her in the form of a well-built man. (19:17) Until His saying, "A determined appointment." (19:21) She conceived. He, who spoke to her, was the soul of 'Isa, peace be upon him. Abu Ja'far narrated to me that Ar-Rabi' bin Anas narrated to him from Abu Al-'Aliyah from Ubayy bin Ka'b who said, "He entered it."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ stayed for ten years, tracing people in their homes during the season, in Muhjanah, 'Ukaz, and in their homes in Mina. He would say, 'Who will shelter me and support me until I deliver the messages of my Lord, and Paradise will be his?' But he ﷺ did not find anyone to support or shelter him until a man would leave Egypt or Yemen and his people would come to him and say, 'Beware of the Quraysh boy who walks among their caravans, inviting them to Allah.' They would point him out until Allah sent to him someone from Yathrib (Madina). The man would come to him, believe in him, and recite the Qur'an to him. Then he would return to his people, and they would embrace Islam until there was not a single house in Yathrib without a group of Muslims openly practicing Islam. They (the Muslims) consulted with each other and said, 'How long will the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be expelled and in fear in the mountains of Makkah?' So we set off until we reached him during the season. The people of 'Aqabah promised him and 'Abbas, his uncle, addressed the people of Yathrib, saying, 'O people of Yathrib, we gathered with him by a man and two men. When he looked at our faces, he said, 'These are people I don't know, they are young people.' We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you want us to pledge allegiance to you upon?' He said, 'Pledge allegiance to me upon hearing and obeying, in times of ease and difficulty, in matters of expenditure and hardship, and in commanding good and forbidding evil. And that you do not reproach me about Allah if you are not pleased with something, and that you support me when I come to you, denying me what you deny yourselves, your wives, and your children. Paradise will be yours.' So we pledged allegiance to him, and he took the hand of As'ad bin Zurarah, who was the youngest of the seventy except me. He said, 'O people of Yathrib, we never struck the liver of any animal except that we knew he was the Messenger of Allah, and his expulsion today is the separation of all the Arab tribes, and the killing of your best men. If you wish, you bear this burden and the reward will be with Allah, and if you fear for your own selves, leave him alone, for he is the most deserving to be excused before Allah.' They said, 'O As'ad, remove your hand from us. By Allah, we will not abandon this pledge nor break it.' So a man stood up and took the hand of 'Abbas, and guaranteed its fulfillment with Paradise.

[Machine] We were a people of merchants, and war had besieged us between us and the Messenger of Allah until our wealth was destroyed. When a ceasefire was made between us and the Messenger of Allah, we did not feel safe with our wealth. So I went out with a group from Quraysh, heading towards Syria, where our trade was. I arrived there during the time when Heraclius appeared. He detained those who opposed him from Persia and confiscated their cross, which they had seized from him. When Heraclius heard this news from them and learned that his cross had been saved for him, he was overjoyed and thanked Allah. When Heraclius returned to him what he had returned for him to pray in the holy house, the path was extended for him with rugs and scented with musk. When he reached Jerusalem and completed his prayer, with him were his staff and the bishops of the Romans. The Messenger of Allah’s letter arrived for him, carried by Dhihya ibn Khalifa al-Kalbi, in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Heraclius, the great leader of the Romans, peace be upon whoever follows guidance. To proceed, submit and you will be safe. Submit and Allah will give you twice your reward. But if you turn away, then the sin of the disbelievers will be upon you. Muhammad ibn Ishaq said that Ibn Shihab narrated to him that the bishops of the Christians said, "I met him (Heraclius) during the time of 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and he claimed that he knew about the affair of the Messenger of Allah and Heraclius. His intellect mentioned that when he received the Messenger of Allah's letter. he placed it between his two thighs and waist. Then he wrote to a man in Rome who used to recite from the Hebrew what he recited, mentioning his affair and describing his state. With this news that had come to him, he wrote to the companion of the Roman asking him to inform Heraclius that this was the Prophet that they had been awaiting, with no doubt about him. So they followed him and believed in him, and Heraclius ordered the bishops of the Romans to bring him the crosses of the Romans. They gathered them for him in a pillowcase, which was carried on the gates, and then he inspected them from above and appreciated them, for they feared for their own selves. They said, 'O Romans, I have gathered you for news. This man has sent me a letter inviting me to his religion, and by Allah, this is the man that we have been anticipating, and we find mention of him in our scriptures. So come, let us follow him and believe in him, and he will grant us our worldly needs as well as the hereafter.' So they prostrated before him, and he ordered the opening of the gates, so they opened for them and they left.

[Machine] In His saying, "And do not turn away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance". It was narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to sit with Bilal, 'Ammaar bin Yaasir, Sohayb, and Khabbaab ibn Al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with them), in the company of some weak believers. When they saw those around the Prophet ﷺ , they demeaned them, so they went to him and spoke in this manner, "We would like for you to establish a separate gathering for us, where the Arabs can recognize our importance. When Arab delegations come to visit you, we feel ashamed to be seen sitting with these slaves. Or when we come to you, have them leave, and when we leave, let them sit if you wish." He said, "Yes." They said, "Then write for us a treaty." He called for a parchment in order to write for them, and he called 'Ali to write. While we were sitting in a corner, with him, Angel Gabriel descended upon him, and he recited the verse, "And do not turn away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon". Then, he mentioned Al-Aqra' Ibn Habis and his companion and said, "And thus We made some of them as a trial for others to say, “Are these the ones upon whom Allahhas bestowed favor among us?” Is not Allah most knowing of the grateful?" Then, he mentioned him and said, "And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, 'Peace be upon you; your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw the parchment, called us, and approached us while saying, "Peace be upon you," until we sat down with our knees touching his knees.

[Machine] In His saying ﷻ{And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, continuing in devotion to Him.} It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sitting with Bilal, Ammar ibn Yasir, Suhaib, and Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, amongst a group of weak believers. When the Prophet saw them gathered around him, he honored them and allowed them to approach him. They said, "We would like you to reserve a position for us that the Arabs recognize as a mark of distinction. When the delegations of the Arabs come to you, we feel ashamed to be seen sitting with these slaves. Or at least, when we come to you, allow us to have them move aside, and once we have finished, allow them to sit if you wish." He said, "Yes." They then said, "Write a document for us." So he called for a paper to be written for them, and he called upon Ali to write it. While we were sitting in one corner, Gabriel descended upon him revealing the verse ﷻ{And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon.} Then he mentioned 'Aqra ibn Habis and his companion, stating ﷻ{And thus We have tried some of them through others that they might say, "Are these the ones Allah has favored among us?" Is not Allah most knowing of the grateful?"} He then mentioned him and said ﷻ{And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy.} Upon mentioning this, the Prophet threw the document and called us to approach him, saying "Peace be upon you." We approached him until we put our knees against his knees.

[Machine] That Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf, the Jewish poet, used to insult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions and incite the polytheists of Quraysh against them in his poetry. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, there were Muslims among them who were united by the call of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and among them were the polytheists who worshiped idols, as well as Jews and members of the Halqah and Hushun tribes who were allies of the Banu Aus and Khazraj. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to reconcile with them and establish good relations with them. There were men who were Muslims while their fathers were polytheists, and men who were Muslims while their brothers were polytheists. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, the polytheists and Jews of the city would haraass the Prophet ﷺ and his companions the most. Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims to bear patience and forgive them. In them, Allah the Most High revealed: "[There are] indeed many among them who harass the Prophet and say, 'He is a one who listens [to every word].' [But] the people of faith who were given the Scripture(s) before your time did the same; and the polytheists as well. If you were to yield to their desires, after the knowledge that has come to you, you would be a transgressor. And there are among the People of the Book those who would indeed wish to bring you back to infidelity after faith. [But] out of their selfish envy, even after the truth has become clear to them. So, forgive and overlook until Allah brings about His command. Indeed, Allah has power over all things." When Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf refused to stop his harm towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims, the Prophet ﷺ ordered Sa'd bin Mu'adh, Muhammad bin Maslamah Al-Ansari, and Harith bin Aws bin Thabit Al-Ansari, as well as Abu 'Isa bin Habrah Al-Ansari and Harith bin Sa'd bin Mu'adh, to assassinate him. They went to him one evening in his assembly at Al-Awali and when Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf saw them, he sensed their intentions and asked them, "What brought you here?" They replied, "We came to discuss a matter with you." He said, "Then let one of you come closer to me and inform me about it." So, one of them approached him and said, "We came to negotiate selling you some armor, the proceeds of which we will use for charity." He said, "By Allah, if you do that, you would have exhausted yourselves. Since this man came to you, he has been challenging you to come to him for dinner when people have gone and it is a good opportunity. So, they went to him and one of them called out to him. When he stood up to go to them, his wife asked him, 'What are they asking of you at this time of the night? Is there something you desire from them?' He said, 'Yes, indeed they have told me something interesting.' Then, he went out to them. Muhammad bin Maslamah embraced him and said, 'Let none of you precede the others in slaying him. We will all kill him together, for if we allow him to speak a word, he will bewitch us.'" Then they stabbed him with their swords in his abdomen and killed him. When the Jews and the polytheists who were with them found out about it, they were alarmed and the next morning they went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Our leader was killed last night and he was a nobleman among us.' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited to them some of his poetry in which he insulted and harmed them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called them to write a document between him and them and the Muslims in general, which would include the agreement of the people. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote it.

"There were kings after 'Isa bin Mariam who altered the Tawrah and the Injil, but there were among them believers who read the Tawrah. It was said to their kings: 'We have never heard of any slander worse than that of those (believers) who slander us and recite: "And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are the disbelievers." In these Verses, they are criticizing us for our deeds when they recite them.' So he called them together and gave them the choice between being put to death, or giving up reading the Tawrah and Injil, except for what had been altered. They said: 'Why do you want us to change? Leave us alone.' Some of them said: 'Build us a tower and let us go up there, and give us something to lift up our food and drink so we do not have to mix with you.' Others said: 'Let us go and wander throughout the land, and we will drink as the wild animals drink, and if you capture us in your land, you may kill us.' Others said: 'Build houses for us in the wilderness, and we will dig wells and grow vegetables, and we will not mix with you or pass by you, for there is no one of the tribes among whom we do not have close relatives.' So they did that, and Allah revealed the words: 'But the monasticism which they invented for themselves, We did not prescribe for them, but (they sought it) only to please Allah therewith, but that they did not observe it with the right observance.' Then others said: 'We will worship as so-and-so worshipped, and we will wander as so-and-so wandered, and we will adopt houses (in the wilderness) as so-and-so did.' But they were still following their Shirk with no knowledge of the faith of those whom they claimed to be following. When Allah sent the Prophet [SAW], and they were only a few of them left, a man came down from his cell, and a wanderer came from his travels, and a monk came from his monastery, and they believed in him. And Allah said: 'O you who believe! Fear Allah, and believe in His Messenger (Muhammad), He will give you a double portion of His mercy - meaning, two rewards, because of their having believed in 'Isa and in the Tawrah and Injil, and for having believing in Muhammad [SAW]; and He will give you a light by which you shall walk (straight), - meaning, the Qur'an, and their following the Prophet [SAW]; and He said: 'So that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may know that they have no power whatsoever over the Grace of Allah.'" Then others said: 'We will worship as so-and-so worshipped, and we will wander as so-and-so wandered, and we will adopt houses (in the wilderness) as so-and-so did.' But they were still following their Shirk with no knowledge of the faith of those whom they claimed to be following. When Allah sent the Prophet [SAW], and they were only a few of them left, a man came down from his cell, and a wanderer came from his travels, and a monk came from his monastery, and they believed in him. And Allah said: 'O you who believe! Fear Allah, and believe in His Messenger (Muhammad), He will give you a double portion of His mercy - meaning, two rewards, because of their having believed in 'Isa and in the Tawrah and Injil, and for having believing in Muhammad [SAW]; and He will give you a light by which you shall walk (straight), - meaning, the Qur'an, and their following the Prophet [SAW]; and He said: 'So that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may know that they have no power whatsoever over the Grace of Allah.'" [Machine] I saw Umar ibn Al-Khattab before he was struck by the days in Medina. He stood with Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman and Uthman ibn Hunayf and said, "How have you two managed to bear the burden of the earth that it cannot bear?" They said, "We have carried it by a command that it can bear." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to carry it, it would be weakened." Uthman ibn Hunayf said, "I have carried it by a command that it can bear, without any great favor." Umar then said, "See that you have not carried the burden of the earth that it cannot bear." They said, "No." Umar said, "If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq without needing any man after me." He said, "Only four things came upon him until he was struck." He said, "And between me and him, there is no one except Abdullah ibn Abbas in the morning." He said, "And he used to stand between the rows. If he saw any disorder among them, he would say, 'Stand still until there is no disorder among them.' Then he would proceed and say the takbir." He said, "And perhaps he would recite Surah Yusuf or An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'a until the people gathered." He said, "And it was only that he would say the takbir." He said, "I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me,' when he was stabbed. Then he flew out of the wound with a double-edged knife that would not pass by anyone to the right or left except that it would stab him, until he stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When he saw that, a Muslim man threw a cloak on him. When the assassin thought that he had taken hold of him, he slit his own throat." He said, "And Umar held the hand of Abdullah ibn Awf and brought him forward." He said, "Who will take care of Umar? He has seen what he has seen." He said, "Regarding the surroundings of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar while they were saying, 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah.' Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf led them in a light prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went for a while and then came back and said, 'The slave of Al-Mughirah killed him.' He said, 'Really?' After they all spoke with their tongues and prayed towards their qibla and performed the Hajj according to their rites, he was brought to his house. We then left with him." He said, "And it was as if the people had not been affected by any calamity before that day. Some were saying, 'There is no harm,' while others were saying, 'We fear for him.' So they brought some wine and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then they brought some milk and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They recognized that he was dead, and he mentioned this incident in his will and in the command to consult each other."

[Machine] There were some Jews who were forbidden by Allah from capturing whales on the Sabbath. Their whales would come to them on their Sabbath, prepared like eggplants with fins, resembling the shape and appearance of their offspring. But on days other than the Sabbath, they would not find any whales unless they exerted great effort and struggled to catch them. So some of them said to each other, or someone among them said, "If we take them on a day other than the Sabbath and eat them, let us do it." So a certain group from among them did so, and they took and ate them. Then their neighbors noticed the smell of cooking from the whales and said, "By Allah, we do not see that the family of so-and-so has experienced anything." So others among them also took and ate them, until this became widespread among them and prevalent. They split into three groups: one group that would eat, one group that would forbid, and one group that would say, "Why do you warn a people whom Allah is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?" (Al-A'raf 164). The group that forbade said, "Indeed, we warn you of the wrath of Allah and His punishment, that Allah may strike you with a calamity, or smite you with one of the punishments He has for you." But we will not reveal our secrets to you when you are in this place." So they went out of the city and stayed there overnight. They returned the next day and knocked on the city gate, but no one answered them. So they brought a ladder and leaned it against the city gate. Then one of them climbed atop the gate and said, "O servants of Allah, it is a group of monkeys, and by Allah, they have tails." Then he came down from the gate, and they opened the gate and the people entered. The monkeys realized that they were descended from humans, but the humans did not realize that they were descended from monkeys. A human would come to his relative or close one among the monkeys, touch him, cling to him, and say, "You are so-and-so, aren't you?" The monkey would nod his head, meaning "yes," and the human would cry. The monkey would go to his relative or close one among the humans, and the human would say to her, "You are so-and-so, aren't you?" She would nod her head, meaning "yes," and she would cry. Then the humans said to them, "Indeed, we warned you of the wrath of Allah and His punishment, that Allah may strike you with a calamity, or smite you with one of the punishments He has for you." Ibn 'Abbas said, "Then Allah said, 'So We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized those who did wrong with a severe punishment because of their disobedience.' (Al-A'raf 165). So I do not know what happened to the third group." Ibn 'Abbas said, "How many times have we seen something forbidden and not prevented it?" 'Ikrimah said, "So I said, 'Do you not see that Allah has made me your intercessor, that they have denied and disliked when they said, 'Why do you warn a people whom Allah is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' (Al-A'raf 164).' He was pleased with my words and ordered two heavy coats for me, and I wore them."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with the pilgrims in their dwellings for ten years during the seasons of Mijannah, 'Ukaz, and their dwellings in Mina. He asked, "Who will provide refuge and support me until I deliver the messages of my Lord? For him is Paradise." However, he did not find anyone who would provide refuge and support him, until a man from Makkah or Yemen would enter his companion's dwelling, and his people or relatives would warn him, saying, "Beware of this young man from Quraysh, he will harm you. He walks among your bags and invites you to Allah, pointing at him with his finger." Then Allah sent a man from Yathrib who believed in him and recited the Quran to him. He returned to his people and they embraced Islam until there was no house left in Yathrib except that it had a group of Muslims who openly declared their faith. Then Allah sent for him and we met and gathered seventy of us and said, "How long will the Messenger of Allah be driven away in the mountains of Makkah and fear? So we traveled until we reached him during the season. We made an appointment with the people of 'Aqabah and gathered there one man, then two men, until we met him there. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, why should we pledge allegiance to you?" He replied, "Pledge allegiance to me in hearing and obedience, in times of ease and difficulty, in hardship and ease, in commanding the good and forbidding the evil, and that you will not blame me for the sake of Allah, regardless of what happens. And that you will support me if I come to you in Yathrib and will protect me from that which you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children. And for you is Paradise." So we said, "We pledge allegiance to you." He took the hand of As'ad bin Zurarah, the youngest of the seventy men except me, and said, "O people of Yathrib, we have not struck the liver of a camel except that we knew that he is the Messenger of Allah and that his leaving today means the separation of all the Arabs and the killing of your best men. And the swords will bite you. But as for you, you are a people who can bear the biting of swords, the killing of your best men, and the separation of all the Arabs. Take him, and your reward is with Allah. But as for you, you fear for yourselves and hesitate, so leave him. He is the most careful for your sake in the sight of Allah." So they said, "Hold your hand, O As'ad bin Zurarah. By Allah, we will not abandon this pledge nor will we resign from it." So we stood up and approached him, one by one, agreeing to his conditions and receiving the promise of Paradise in return.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode a donkey, equipped with a thick cloth-covering made in Fadak and was riding behind him. He was going to pay visit to Saʿd bin Ubada in Banu Al-Harith bin Al-Khazraj; and this incident happened before the battle of Badr. The Prophet ﷺ passed by a gathering in which ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul was present, and that was before ʿAbdullah bin Ubai embraced Islam. Behold in that gathering there were people of different religions: there were Muslims, pagans, idol-worshippers and Jews, and in that gathering ʿAbdullah bin Rawaha was also present. When a cloud of dust raised by the donkey reached that gathering, ʿAbdullah bin Ubai covered his nose with his garment and then said, "Do not cover us with dust." Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ greeted them and stopped and dismounted and invited them to Allah (i.e. to embrace Islam) and recited to them the Holy Qur'an. On that, ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Saluil said, "O man ! There is nothing better than that what you say. If it is the truth, then do not trouble us with it in our gatherings. Return to your mount (or residence) and if somebody comes to you, relate (your tales) to him." On that ʿAbdullah bin Rawaha said, "Yes, O Allah's Apostle! Bring it (i.e. what you want to say) to us in our gathering, for we love that." So the Muslims, the pagans and the Jews started abusing one another till they were on the point of fighting with one another. The Prophet ﷺ kept on quietening them till they became quiet, whereupon the Prophet rode his animal (mount) and proceeded till he entered upon Saʿd bin Ubada. The Prophet ﷺ said to Saʿd, "Did you not hear what 'Abu Hub-b said?" He meant ʿAbdullah bin Ubai. "He said so-andso." On that Saʿd bin Ubada said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Excuse and forgive him, for by Him Who revealed the Book to you, Allah brought the Truth which was sent to you at the time when the people of this town (i.e. Medina) had decided unanimously to crown him and tie a turban on his head (electing him as chief). But when Allah opposed that (decision) through the Truth which Allah gave to you, he (i.e. ʿAbdullah bin Ubai) was grieved with jealously. and that caused him to do what you have seen." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ excused him, for the Prophet ﷺ and his companions used to forgive the pagans and the people of Scripture as Allah had ordered them, and they used to put up with their mischief with patience. Allah said: "And you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Scripture before you and from the pagans........'(3.186) And Allah also said:--"Many of the people of the Scripture wish if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, from selfish envy.." (2.109) So the Prophet ﷺ used to stick to the principle of forgiveness for them as long as Allah ordered him to do so till Allah permitted fighting them. So when Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought the battle of Badr and Allah killed the nobles of Quraish infidels through him, Ibn Ubai bin Salul and the pagans and idolaters who were with him, said, "This matter (i.e. Islam) has appeared (i.e. became victorious)." So they gave the pledge of allegiance (for embracing Islam) to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and became Muslims. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4566)

"When it became clear to us that we should go to the Prophet ﷺ we travelled until we were in sight of our destination. We were met by a man on a young camel. He greeted is and we returned the greeting. Then he stopped and asked, 'Which tribe are you from?' We replied, 'We are the delegation of 'Abdu'l-Qays.' The man said, 'Welcome. I was looking for you. I came to give you good news. Yesterday the Prophet ﷺ looked towards the east and told us, "Tomorrow from that direction (i.e. the east) there will come the best delegation of the Arabs." I spent the night preparing to leave. This morning I rode long and hard on my camel until dawn rose. Then I thought of returning, but I caught sight of the heads of your mounts.'
