I begged the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me. I again begged, he again gave me. I again begged, he again gave me, and then said: This property is green and sweet; he who receives it with a cheerful heart is blessed in it, and he who receives it with an avaricious mind would not be blessed in it, he being like one who eats without being satished, and the upper hand is better thad the lower hand.  

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى  

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: "This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without insisting, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand."'  

أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدٌ وَعُرْوَةُ سَمِعَا حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى  

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: This wealth is attractive and sweet. "I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: 'O Kahim! This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without being greedy, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand."'

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. The he said: 'O Hakim, this wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without being greedy, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! By the One Who sent you with the truth, I will never ask anyone for anything after you, until I depart this world. "'

I begged the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me. I again begged, he again gave me. سَمِعْنَا حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِحَقِّهِ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى  

Hakim bin Hizam said, "(Once) I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said, "O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand." Hakim added, "I said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'By Him (Allah) Who sent you with the Truth, I shall never accept anything from anybody after you, till I leave this world.' " Then Abu Bakr (during his caliphate) called Hakim to give him his share from the war booty (like the other companions of the Prophet ﷺ ), he refused to accept anything. Then ʿUmar (during his caliphate) called him to give him his share but he refused. On that ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I would like you to witness that I offered Hakim his share from this booty and he refused to take it." So Hakim never took anything from anybody after the Prophet ﷺ till he died. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1472)  

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ «يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرٌ حُلْوٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ»

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: "This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without insisting, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ وَعُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ حُلْوَةٌ خَضِرَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَهُ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى»  

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: "This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without insisting, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى»  

[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for some money, and I insisted, so he gave me. Then I asked him again, and he gave me. He said, "O wise man, I did not hesitate to fulfill your request, as this money is green and sweet, but it is also the filth of people's hands. Whoever takes it generously, will be blessed in it, and whoever takes it with arrogance will not be blessed. It is like the one who eats and never feels satisfied. The hand of Allah is above the hand of the giver, and the hand of the giver is above the hand of the receiver, and the hand of the receiver is the lowest."  

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَالِ فَأَلْحَحْتُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي فَقَالَ «مَا أَنْكَرَ مَسْأَلَتَكَ يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ وَإِنَّهَا أَوْسَاخُ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهَا وَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالْآكِلِ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ يَدُ اللهِ فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطِي وَيَدُ الْمُعْطِي فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطَى وَيَدُ الْمُعْطَى أَسْفَلُ الْأَيْدِي»  

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without insisting, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِائَةً مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَأَعْطَاهُ ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ مِائَةً فَأَعْطَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ»

I asked the Prophet (for some money) and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me and he then said, "This wealth is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and whoever takes it without greed, Allah will bless it for him, but whoever takes it with greed, Allah will not bless it for him, and he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied. I asked the Prophet (for some money) and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me and he then said, "This wealth is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and whoever takes it without greed, Allah will bless it for him, but whoever takes it with greed, Allah will not bless it for him, and he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied. سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا حَكِيمُ إِنِّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى» قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا شَيْئًا  

"سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَالِ فَأَلْحَحْتُ فَأَعْطَانِى، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِى، فَقَالَ: مَا أَنْكَرَ مَسْأَلَتَكَ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ وَإِنَّهَا أَوْسَاخُ أَيْدِى النَّاسِ، فَمن أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَاركْ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَكَانَ كَالآكِلِ وَلَا يَشْبِعُ يَدُ الله فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطِى، وَيَدُ الْمُعطِى فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطَى، وَيَدُ الْمُعْطَى أَسْفَلُ الأَيدِى".  

" يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ: إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ وَحُسْنِ إِكْلَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فيه، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِاسْتشْرافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوءِ إِكْلَةٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ، وَكَانَ كَالَّذِى يَأكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، الْيَدُ الْعُليَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدَ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ".  

"إِنَّ هذا المال خَضِرٌ حُلْوٌ، فمن أخذَه بحقِّه بُوركَ له فيه، ومن أَخذَه بإِشراف نفس لم يبارَكْ له فيه، وكان كالذى يأكلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، واليدُ العُلْيا خيرٌ من اليد السَّفْلى".  

"عَنْ سَعيدِ بْنِ المُسَيَّب وَعُرْوَةَ قَالا: أَعْطَى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حزَامٍ يَوْمَ حُنَينٍ عَطَاءً فَاسْتَقَلَّهُ فَزَادَهُ، فَقَال: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَىُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيرٌ؟ قَالَ: الأُولى يا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ إِنَّ هَذَا المَال خَضرةٌ حُلوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ وَحُسْنِ أَكْلَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيه، وَمَنْ أَخَذَه بِاسْتِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوءِ أَكْلَةِ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَكَانَ كالَّذِى يَأكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيرٌ مِنَ اليَدِ السُّفْلَى، قَالَ: وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَال: وَمِنِّى".
