Hakim bin Hizam said, "(Once) I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said, "O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand." Hakim added, "I said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'By Him (Allah) Who sent you with the Truth, I shall never accept anything from anybody after you, till I leave this world.' " Then Abu Bakr (during his caliphate) called Hakim to give him his share from the war booty (like the other companions of the Prophet ﷺ ), he refused to accept anything. Then ʿUmar (during his caliphate) called him to give him his share but he refused. On that ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I would like you to witness that I offered Hakim his share from this booty and he refused to take it." So Hakim never took anything from anybody after the Prophet ﷺ till he died.

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لاَ أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَهُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى حَكِيمٍ أَنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَىْءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ

Hakim bin Hizam said, "I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something, and he gave me, and I asked him again and he gave me and said, 'O Hakim! This wealth is green and sweet (i.e. as tempting as fruits), and whoever takes it without greed then he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it and he is like one who eats and never gets satisfied. The upper (i.e. giving) hand is better than the lower (i.e. taking) hand." Hakim added, "I said, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Him Who has sent you with the Truth I will never demand anything from anybody after you till I die." Afterwards Abu Bakr used to call Hakim to give him something but he refused to accept anything from him. Then ʿUmar called him to give him (something) but he refused. Then ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I offered to him (i.e. Hakim) his share which Allah has ordained for him from this booty and he refuses to take it." Thus Hakim did not ask anybody for anything after the Prophet, till he died--may Allah bestow His mercy upon him.

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرٌ حُلْوٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لاَ أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا لِيُعْطِيَهُ الْعَطَاءَ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَهُ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ الَّذِي قَسَمَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَىْءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ

Hakim bin Hizam said, "I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something, and he gave me. I asked him again, and he gave me, and said to me. 'O Hakim! This wealth is like green sweet (i.e. fruit), and if one takes it without greed, then one is blessed in it, and if one takes it with greediness, then one is not blessed in it, and will be like the one who eats without satisfaction. And an upper (i.e. giving) hand is better than a lower (i.e. taking) hand,' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Him Who has sent you with the Truth. I will not ask anyone for anything after you till I leave this world." So, when Abu Bakr during his Caliphate, called Hakim to give him (some money), Hakim refused to accept anything from him. Once ʿUmar called him (during his Caliphate) in order to give him something, but Hakim refused to accept it, whereupon ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I give him (i.e. Hakim) his right which Allah has assigned to him) from this Fai '(booty), but he refuses to take it." So Hakim never took anything from anybody after the Prophet ﷺ till he died.

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرٌ حُلْوٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لاَ أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا لِيُعْطِيَهُ الْعَطَاءَ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ الَّذِي قَسَمَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَىْءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ

I asked the Prophet (for some money) and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me and he then said, "This wealth is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and whoever takes it without greed, Allah will bless it for him, but whoever takes it with greed, Allah will not bless it for him, and he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (taking) hand."

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا الْمَالُ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ سُفْيَانُ قَالَ لِي يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى

I begged the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me. I again begged, he again gave me. I again begged, he again gave me, and then said: This property is green and sweet; he who receives it with a cheerful heart is blessed in it, and he who receives it with an avaricious mind would not be blessed in it, he being like one who eats without being satished, and the upper hand is better thad the lower hand.

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى

And the upper hand (giving) is better than the lower hand (receiving)." So Hakim said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! By the One who sent you with the Truth! I shall not ask anyone for anything after you until I depart the world.'"So Abu Bakr used to call Hakim to give him something, but he refused to accept it. Then 'Umar called him to give to him, but he refused to accept it. So 'Umar said: "O you Muslims! I would like you to bear witness that I presented Hakim with his due of these spoils of war but he refused to accept it." So Hakim never asked anyone of the people for anything after the Messenger of Allah, until he died.

أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدٌ وَعُرْوَةُ سَمِعَا حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلاَ يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: 'O Kahim! This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without being greedy, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand."'

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. The he said: 'O Hakim, this wealth is attractive and sweet. And whoever takes it, insisting upon it, he will not be blessed in it. He is like the one who eats but does not get satisfied and contended. And the upper hand (giving) is better than the lower hand (receiving)." So Hakim said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! By the One who sent you with the Truth! I shall not ask anyone for anything after you until I depart the world.'"So Abu Bakr used to call Hakim to give him something, but he refused to accept it. Then 'Umar called him to give to him, but he refused to accept it. So 'Umar said: "O you Muslims! I would like you to bear witness that I presented Hakim with his due of these spoils of war but he refused to accept it." "I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. The he said: 'O Hakim, this wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without being greedy, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! By the One Who sent you with the truth, I will never ask anyone for anything after you, until I depart this world. [AI] The Prophet ﷺ gave Hakim ibn Hizam an offering on the day of Hunayn, then he increased it. Hakim asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, which of your offerings is better?" He replied, "The first one." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "O Hakim ibn Hizam, this is a green and sweet plant. Whoever takes it with a generous soul and good eating will be blessed, and whoever takes it with greed and bad eating will not be blessed, and it will be like one who eats but is not satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." Hakim asked, "And from you, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "And from me." Hakim said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never beg from anyone after you." Hakim did not accept any salary or gift until he died. Omar ibn al-Khattab said, "O Allah, I bear witness to You that I call upon Hakim ibn Hizam to take his share of this wealth, but he refuses." Hakim said, "I swear by Allah, I will never give it to you or anyone else." He died in the state he was in, and indeed he was one of the wealthiest Quraysh.

أَعْطَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ عَطَاءً فَاسْتَقَلَهُ فَزَادَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ؟ قَالَ «الْأُولَى» فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ إِنَّ هَذَا خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ وَحُسْنِ أَكْلَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِاسْتِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوءِ أَكْلَةٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى» قَالَ وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ؟ قَالَ «وَمِنِّي» قَالَ فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ بَعْدَكَ أَحَدًا شَيْئًا أَبَدًا قَالَ فَلَمْ يَقْبَلْ دِيوَانًا وَلَا عَطَاءً حَتَّى مَاتَ فَكَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ عَلَى حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ أَنِّي أَدْعُوهُ لَحِقِّهِ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَهُوَ يَأْبَى» فَقَالَ إِنِّي وَاللهِ لَا أَرْزَؤُكَ وَلَا غَيْرَكَ شَيْئًا فَمَاتَ حِينَ مَاتَ وَإِنَّهُ لِمِنْ أَكْثَرِ قُرَيْشٍ مَالًا

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: "This wealth is attractive and sweet. Whoever takes it without insisting, it will be blessed for him, and whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be blessed for him. He is like one who eats and is not satisfied. [AI] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for some money, and I insisted, so he gave me. Then I asked him again, and he gave me. He said, "O wise man, I did not hesitate to fulfill your request, as this money is green and sweet, but it is also the filth of people's hands. Whoever takes it generously, will be blessed in it, and whoever takes it with arrogance will not be blessed. It is like the one who eats and never feels satisfied. The hand of Allah is above the hand of the giver, and the hand of the giver is above the hand of the receiver, and the hand of the receiver is the lowest."

"I asked the Messenger of Allah and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me. Then he said: This wealth is attractive and sweet. I begged the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me. I again begged, he again gave me. I again begged, he again gave me, and then said: This property is green and sweet; he who receives it with a cheerful heart is blessed in it, and he who receives it with an avaricious mind would not be blessed in it, he being like one who eats without being satished, and the upper hand is better thad the lower hand. Hakim bin Hizam said, "(Once) I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said, "O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand." Hakim added, "I said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'By Him (Allah) Who sent you with the Truth, I shall never accept anything from anybody after you, till I leave this world.' " Then Abu Bakr (during his caliphate) called Hakim to give him his share from the war booty (like the other companions of the Prophet ﷺ ), he refused to accept anything. Then ʿUmar (during his caliphate) called him to give him his share but he refused. On that ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I would like you to witness that I offered Hakim his share from this booty and he refused to take it." So Hakim never took anything from anybody after the Prophet ﷺ till he died. سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا قَالَ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَهُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ فأبى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى حَكِيمٍ أَنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَيْءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ

"إِنَّ هذا المال خَضِرٌ حُلْوٌ، فمن أخذَه بحقِّه بُوركَ له فيه، ومن أَخذَه بإِشراف نفس لم يبارَكْ له فيه، وكان كالذى يأكلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، واليدُ العُلْيا خيرٌ من اليد السَّفْلى".

"مَا أنكَر مَسْألَتكَ يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَال خَضِرٌ حُلوٌ وَإنَّمَا هُوَ مَعَ ذَلِكَ أَوْسَاخُ أيدِي النَّاسِ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَة بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَمَنْ أخَذَهَا بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْس لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَكَانَ كَالآكلِ، وَلا يَشْبَعُ، وَإنَّ يَدَ اللهِ الْعُليَا، وَيَدُ الْمُعْطِى فَوْقَ الْمُعْطَى وَأَسْفَلُ الأَيدِى يَدُ الْمُعْطَى".

" يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ: إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ وَحُسْنِ إِكْلَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فيه، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِاسْتشْرافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوءِ إِكْلَةٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ، وَكَانَ كَالَّذِى يَأكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، الْيَدُ الْعُليَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدَ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ".

"سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَالِ فَأَلْحَحْتُ فَأَعْطَانِى، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِى، فَقَالَ: مَا أَنْكَرَ مَسْأَلَتَكَ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ وَإِنَّهَا أَوْسَاخُ أَيْدِى النَّاسِ، فَمن أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَاركْ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَكَانَ كَالآكِلِ وَلَا يَشْبِعُ يَدُ الله فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطِى، وَيَدُ الْمُعطِى فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطَى، وَيَدُ الْمُعْطَى أَسْفَلُ الأَيدِى".

"عَن سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ قَالَ: أَعْطَى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ

يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ عَطَاءً فَاسْتَقَلَّه، فَزَادَهُ، فَقَالَ [يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ: أَىُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خيْرٌ؟ ] قَالَ: الأُولَى. فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ يَا حكيمُ بْنَ حِزامٍ! إِنَّ هَذَا المَالَ خضرةٌ حُلْوةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ، وَحُسْنِ أكلةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِاسْتشرافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوء أَكْلَةٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَكَانَ كالَّذِى يَأكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى، قَالَ: وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: وَمِنِّى، قَالَ: فَوَالَّذِى بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَق لَا أَرْزَأُ بَعْدَكَ أَحَدًا شَيئًا أَبَدًا. قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَقْبَلْ دِيوانًا وَلَا عَطَاءً حَتَّى مَاتَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أُشْهِدُكَ عَلَى حَكِيم بْنِ حزَامٍ أَنِّى أَدْعُوهُ لِحقِّهِ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَهُوَ يَأبَى، فَقَالَ: إِنِّى وَاللَّهِ مَا أَرْزَأُكَ وَلَا غَيْركَ شَيْئًا".
