3. Book of Zakāh (1/2)
said When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Mu’adh to Yemen, he said to him You are going to a people who are people of the book. So call them to bear witness that there is no diety but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they obey you in this respect, tell them that Allah has prescribed five prayers on them every day and night. If they obey you in this regard tell them that Allah has prescribed sadaqah(zakat) on their property and returned it to their poor. If they obey you in this respect, do not take the best of their property. Beware of the curse of the oppressed, for there is no curtain between it and Allah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1584)
3.2 [Machine] The poor person who is given charity.
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "The poor person is not the one who is handed a morsel or two, or a small piece of food, or two small pieces of food, or a date, or two dates. Rather, the poor person is the one who does not have sufficient means to make him independent and feels ashamed to ask people for help, or refrains from asking people for help."
3.3 [Machine] Whoever does not pay the zakat for camels, cows, and sheep
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever owns camels, cows, or sheep and does not fulfill their rights, on the Day of Judgment he will be made to sit on a plain of black goo, which will be trampled by the hooves of the animals, and they will butt him with their horns. On that day, there will be no clothing or shelters for protection." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what are their rights?" He said, "Using the male for breeding, lending the bucket, giving milk to others, allowing it to drink from water, carrying loads in the way of Allah."
[Machine] "A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what are the rights of camels?' He replied, 'Milking them for water, lending her bucket, lending her male, giving her as a gift, and carrying goods on her in the way of Allah.'"
A part of tradition has also been transmitted by al-Lajlaj from the Prophet ﷺ through a different chain of narrators. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4436)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ prescribed giving charity. In regards to sheep, for every forty, there is one to donate, and if they exceed that amount, then two are donated for every one hundred and if they exceed that amount, then three are donated for every three hundred. If the number of sheep exceeds four hundred, then for every one hundred sheep, one is donated and it is not permissible to take a white one, one with a defect, or one that has a blemish as charity.

Regarding forty sheep, there should be one sheep for every twenty sheep until they reach one hundred and one. Then, for every hundred sheep added, there should be two. When it reaches two hundred and one, there should be three sheep. And for every additional hundred sheep, there should be one sheep."

3.5 [Machine] Zakat al-baqar.
Suwa Mu'adh bin Jabal said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ send me to Yemen and commanded me; for every forty cows, to take a Musinnah and for every thirty, a Tabi or Tabi'ah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1803)

3.6 [Machine] Zakat al-Ibil
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ wrote the charity, but it was not given to his workers until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away. When he passed away, Abu Bakr took it and acted upon it. After Abu Bakr passed away, Umar took it and acted upon it. Indeed, Umar was killed, and it is said that it was tied to his sword or his will. And it was in the charity of camels, for every five sheep there should be one camel until twenty-five. When it reaches twenty-five, there should be a parturient camel until thirty-five. If it is not a parturient camel, then there can be a male camel. When it increases, there should be a female camel until forty-five. When it increases, there should be a share until sixty. When it increases, there should be a shap till seventy-five. When it increases, there should be two parturient camels until ninety. When it increases, there should be two shares until a hundred. When it increases, there should be one share for every fifty and one female camel for every forty.

My grandfather, my father and I gave the pledge of allegiance to Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ got me engaged and then got me married. One day I went to the Prophet ﷺ with a complaint. My father Yazid had taken some gold coins for charity and kept them with a man in the mosque (to give them to the poor) But I went and took them and brought them to him (my father). My father said, "By Allah! I did not intend to give them to you. " I took (the case) to Messenger of Allah ﷺ . On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Yazid, you will be rewarded for what you intended. O Ma'n, whatever you have taken is yours." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1422)

[Machine] On the authority of Thawban, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever asks the people for something while he himself is wealthy, it will be a stain on his face."
3.18 [Machine] In abstaining from the matter
Some of the Ansar begged from the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) and he gave them something. They later begged from him again and he gave them something so that what he had was exhausted. He then said :What I have I shall never store away from you but Allah will strengthen the abstinence of him who abstains, will give a satisfaction to him who wants to be satisfied, and will strengthen the endurance of him who shows endurance. No one has been given a more ample gift than endurance. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1644)
3.19 [Machine] Do not reject the gift
[Machine] I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab saying that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to give me gifts. So, I would say to him, "Give it to someone who is poorer than me." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "Take it, for what Allah has given you of this wealth, and you are not asking for it nor begging. So, take it, but do not follow your desires by it."

3.20 [Machine] Prohibition of the matter
Hakim bin Hizam said, "(Once) I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said, "O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand." Hakim added, "I said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'By Him (Allah) Who sent you with the Truth, I shall never accept anything from anybody after you, till I leave this world.' " Then Abu Bakr (during his caliphate) called Hakim to give him his share from the war booty (like the other companions of the Prophet ﷺ ), he refused to accept anything. Then ʿUmar (during his caliphate) called him to give him his share but he refused. On that ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I would like you to witness that I offered Hakim his share from this booty and he refused to take it." So Hakim never took anything from anybody after the Prophet ﷺ till he died. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1472)
3.21 [Machine] When is giving charity recommended for a man?
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The best charity is that which is given when one is still rich, and let one of you begin by supporting those who are dependent upon him."
3.22 [Machine] The Excellence of the Upper Hand
[Machine] "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may peace be upon him, say: 'The upper hand is better than the lower hand.' He said, 'The upper hand is the giving hand, and the lower hand is the hand of the beggar.'"
The Prophet ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than him who takes it). One should start giving first to his dependents. And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses). And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1427)

[Machine] Abu Talhah was one of the most wealthy Ansar in Madinah. He owned a grove of date palms that he loved dearly. It was located near the Prophet's Mosque, and he used to enter it and drink its pure water. Anas narrated that when the verse "[You will never attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love]" (Surah Al-Imran, 92) was revealed, Abu Talhah said, "The dearest of my wealth to me is Bayruhaa (the grove), and I consider it sadaqah (charity) for Allah. I hope for His reward and treasure it with Allah. O Messenger of Allah, place it wherever you wish." The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is a profitable or a blessed wealth." I heard what you said about it, and I think that you should give it to your relatives. Abu Talhah said, "I will do as you advise, O Messenger of Allah," and he distributed it among his relatives from the tribe of Bani 'Amr.

3.24 [Machine] Encouragement to Give Charity
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not address us except that he commanded us to give charity and forbade us from engaging in double-dealing."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "Fear the fire, even if it is by giving away a part of a date, and if you can't find that, then by saying a good word."
3.25 [Machine] Prohibition of giving charity with all that a person possesses.
[Machine] From him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Messenger of Allah, surely my repentance is that I abandon the house of my people and reside with you, and I give a portion of my wealth as charity to Allah and His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "One-third will be sufficient for you."
[Machine] While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a man came to him with an egg-sized piece of gold, some of which he acquired from battles. Ahmad Ibn Hanbal stated that it is from minerals, and this is correct. The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, take this as charity from me. By Allah, I have no wealth other than this." The Prophet turned away from him. Then he came to him from his left side and said the same. He came to him from in front of him and said the same. Then he said, "Give it to me," angrily. The Prophet threw it at him, striking him with it. If it had hit him, it would have hurt or even injured him. Then he said, "One of you may intentionally give away his wealth when he does not own anything else, then sit amongst the people as if he is poor. Charity is only appropriate for those who possess excess wealth. Take what is rightfully yours, as we have no need for it." So the man took his wealth and left. Abu Muhammad stated that Malik used to say, "When a person gives away a third of his wealth to the poor, it is considered charity."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us one day to give sadaqah. At that time I had some property. I said: Today I shall surpass AbuBakr if I surpass him any day. I, therefore, brought half my property. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: What did you leave for your family? I replied: The same amount. AbuBakr brought all that he had with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him: What did you leave for your family? He replied: I left Allah and His Apostle for them. I said: I shall never compete you in anything. 3.27 [Machine] In the Zakat al-Fitr
"The Messenger of Allah made Sadaqatul-Fitr of Ramadan an obligation - a Sa of dried dates or a Sa of barley - required upon every free person and slave, male and female among the Muslims." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 676)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded the payment of Zakat al-Fitr from every free or slave, young or old, one saa’ of wheat or one saa’ of dates." Ibn Umar said, "People later replaced it with a measure of barley."
"We would give Zakat Al-Fitr - when the Messenger of Allah was among us - as a Sa of food, or a Sa of barely, or a Sa of dried dates, or a Sa of raisins, or a Sa of cheese. So we did not stop paying it (like that) until Mu'awiyah arrived in Al-Madinah and talked (about it). Among the things he addressed the people with, he said: 'I see that two Mudd of the wheat of Ash-Sham are equal to a Sa of dried dates.' So the people followed that." Abu Sa'eed said: "I will not stop giving it in the manner that I had been giving it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 673)
