[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "The poor person is not the one who is handed a morsel or two, or a small piece of food, or two small pieces of food, or a date, or two dates. Rather, the poor person is the one who does not have sufficient means to make him independent and feels ashamed to ask people for help, or refrains from asking people for help."  

الدارمي:١٦٥٦أَخْبَرَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يُحَدِّثُ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ «لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ اللُّقْمَةُ وَاللُّقْمَتَانِ وَالْكِسْرَةُ وَالْكِسْرَتَانِ وَالتَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَلَكِنِ الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي لَيْسَ لَهُ غِنًى يُغْنِيهِ يَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا أَوْ لَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا »

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The poor person is not the one who asks a morsel or two (of meals) from the others, but the poor is the one who has nothing and is ashamed to beg from others."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The poor person is not the one who goes round the people and ask them for a mouthful or two (of meals) or a date or two but the poor is that who has not enough (money) to satisfy his needs and whose condition is not known to others, that others may give him something in charity, and who does not beg of people."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The poor person is not the one for whom a date or two or a morsel or two (of food is sufficient but the poor person is he who does not (beg or) ask the people (for something) or show his poverty at all. Recite if you wish, (Allah's Statement): "They do not beg of people at all." (2.273)

سَمِعْنَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ التَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَلاَ اللُّقْمَةُ وَلاَ اللُّقْمَتَانِ إِنَّمَا الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي يَتَعَفَّفُ وَاقْرَءُوا إِنْ شِئْتُمْ يَعْنِي قَوْلَهُ {لاَ يَسْأَلُونَ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا}

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ that he said: The poor person is not the one who is provided with a meal, or two meals, or a morsel, or two morsels, or a date, or two dates, while harboring doubt about it. Rather, the poor person is the one who has no means to provide for himself, and does not ask people persistently, nor does he feel ashamed to ask people persistently.

[Machine] I heard Abu Qasim ﷺ say, "The truly needy person is not the one who is given a few dates, or two dates, or a mouthful of food, or two mouthfuls. Rather, the truly needy person is the one who cannot find enough to sustain themselves and does not ask people insistently."  

أحمد:١٠٠٦٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ بِالطَّوَّافِ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ التَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَالْأُكْلَةُ وَالْأُكْلَتَانِ وَلَكِنَّ الْمِسْكِينَ الَّذِي لَا يَجِدُ غِنًى يُغْنِيهِ وَلَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا

"The poor man (Miskin) is not the one who goes around asking people and they send him away with a morsel or two, of a date or two. "They said: "Then what does poor (Mishkin) mean?" He said: "The one who does not possess independence of means and no one notices him to give charity to him, and he does not stand and ask of people." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2572)

وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ هَذَا الطَّوَافَ الَّذِي يَطُوفُ عَلَى النَّاسِ تَرُدُّهُ اللُّقْمَةُ وَاللُّقْمَتَانِ وَالتَّمْرَةُوَالتَّمْرَتَانِ إِنَّمَا الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي لَا يَجِدُ غِنًى يُغْنِيهِ وَيَسْتَحِي أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ وَلَا يُفْطَنُ لَهُ فَيُتَصَدَّقَ عَلَيْهِ  

ذِكْرُ الْإِخْبَارِ عَمَّا يَجِبُ عَلَى الْمَرْءِ مِنْ تَحَرِّي صَدَقَةَ الْمَسْتُورِينَ، وَمَنْ لَا يَسْأَلُ دُونَ السُّؤَالِ مِنْهُمْ

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: "The true needy person is not the one who is satisfied with a single meal, two meals, a morsel, two morsels, a date, or two dates. Rather, the truly needy person is the one who cannot find sufficiency, yet they are given sufficiency. They do not ask people insistently for help, and they feel ashamed to ask people insistently for help."  

ابن حبّان:٣٢٩٨أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ بِالطَّوَافِ مَنْ تَرُدُّهُ الْأَكْلَةُ وَالْأَكْلَتَانِ وَاللُّقْمَةُ وَاللُّقْمَتَانِ وَالتَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَلَكِنَّ الْمِسْكِينَ الَّذِي لَا يَجِدُ غِنًى فَيُغْنِيهِ وَلَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا وَيَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا»

البيهقي:١٣١٤٨وَحَدَّثَنَا السَّيِّدُ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْعَلَوِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ إِمْلَاءً أنبأ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ الْمُزَكِّي ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ السُّلَمِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أنبأ مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ قَالَ هَذَا مَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The destitute is not the one who receives dates or two dates or a mouthful or two mouthfuls of food. Rather, the destitute is the one who refrains from begging. Read if you wish: "They do not ask people persistently". [Al-Baqarah 2:273]  

البيهقي:١٣١٤٩أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ الْإِيَادِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ بْنِ خَلَّادٍ النَّصِيبِيُّ ح وَأنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَا ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَنِي شَرِيكُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي نَمِرٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرَةَ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ التَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَاللُّقْمَةُ وَاللُّقْمَتَانِ إِنَّمَا الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي يَتَعَفَّفُ اقْرَءُوا إِنْ شِئْتُمْ {لَا يَسْأَلُونَ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا } [البقرة 273]  

رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الصَّغَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ وَمَنْ يَتَعَفَّفُ وَلَيْسَ لَهُ بَعْضُ الْكِفَايَةِ كَانَ قَاتِلَ نَفْسِهِ دَلَّ عَلَى أَنَّ الْمِسْكِينَ هُوَ الَّذِي لَهُ بَعْضُ الْغِنَى وَلَا يَكُونُ لَهُ مَا يُغْنِيهِ وَالْفَقِيرُ مَنْ لَا مَالَ لَهُ وَلَا حِرْفَةَ يَقَعُ بِهَا مَوْقِعًا وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ
