The poor man(miskin) is not one who is admitted (by the people) with one or two dates or with one or two morsels but is one, who does not beg anything from his people and is not taken notice of so that alms may be given to him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1631)  

أحمد:٩١١١حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ الْأُكْلَةُ وَالْأُكْلَتَانِ أَوِ التَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَلَكِنِالْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي لَا يَسْأَلُ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُفْطَنُ بِمَكَانِهِ فَيُعْطَى

[Machine] I heard Abu Qasim ﷺ say, "The truly needy person is not the one who is given a few dates, or two dates, or a mouthful of food, or two mouthfuls. Rather, the truly needy person is the one who cannot find enough to sustain themselves and does not ask people insistently."  

أحمد:١٠٠٦٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ بِالطَّوَّافِ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ التَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ وَالْأُكْلَةُ وَالْأُكْلَتَانِ وَلَكِنَّ الْمِسْكِينَ الَّذِي لَا يَجِدُ غِنًى يُغْنِيهِ وَلَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The poor person is not the one who goes around begging people for a date or two, or a morsel of food. Rather, the true poor person is the one who is self-restrained, who does not ask people for anything, and whose poverty is not noticed by others so that they may give charity to him."
