'I have sighted the crescent.' He said: 'Do you bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger?' He said: 'Yes.' So the Prophet gave the call saying: 'Fast."'

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ الْهِلاَلَ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَنَادَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ صُومُوا

"I came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'My mother left a will saying that a slave should be freed on her behalf. I have a Nubian slave girl; will it suffice if I free her on her behalf?' He said: 'Bring her here.' The Prophet said to her: 'Who is your Lord?' She said: 'Allah.' He said: 'Who am I?' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Set her free , for she is a believer.'"

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ أُمِّي أَوْصَتْ أَنْ تُعْتَقَ عَنْهَا رَقَبَةٌ وَإِنَّ عِنْدِي جَارِيَةً نُوبِيَّةً أَفَيُجْزِئُ عَنِّي أَنْ أَعْتِقَهَا عَنْهَا قَالَ ائْتِنِي بِهَا فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَنْ رَبُّكِ قَالَتِ اللَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ أَنَا قَالَتْ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَعْتِقْهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ

“A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘I have seen the new crescent tonight.’ He said: ‘Do you bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Get up, O Bilal, and announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow.’” Abu 'Ali said: "This is how it was narrated from Walid bin Abu Thawr and Hasan bin 'Ali. It was also narrated from Hammad bin Salamah, but he did not mention Ibn 'Abbas. He said: 'And he announced that they should perform the prayer and that they should fast.'"

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَبْصَرْتُ الْهِلاَلَ اللَّيْلَةَ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ قُمْ يَا بِلاَلُ فَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَصُومُوا غَدًا

A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I have sighted the moon. Al-Hasan added in his version: that is, of Ramadan. He asked: Do you testify that there is no god but Allah? He replied: Yes. He again asked: Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah? He replied: Yes. and he testified that he had sighted the moon. He said: Bilal, announce to the people that they must fast tomorrow. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2340)

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ «أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «يَا بِلَالُ نَادِ فِي النَّاسِ فَلْيَصُومُوا غَدًا»

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, my mother has a slave girl, and I have an Abyssinian slave girl. Should I set her free?" He said, "Bring her to me." Then he asked, "Do you bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah?" She replied, "Yes." He said, "Set her free, for she is a believer."

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ عَلَى أُمِّي رَقَبَةً وَإِنَّ عِنْدِي جَارِيَةً سَوْدَاءَ نُوبِيَّةً أَفَتُجْزِئُ عَنْهَا قَالَ «ادْعُ بِهَا» فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَعْتِقْهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ»

[AI] And he (the man) said, "O Messenger of Allah, verily, there is a believing slave under my ownership. If you see her as a believer, I will free her." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Do you believe in the resurrection after death?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Free her."

وَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَرَى هَذِهِ مُؤْمِنَةً أَعْتَقْتُهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتُؤْمِنِينَ بِالْبَعْثِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَعْتِقْهَا

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أُمِّي أَوْصَتْ أَنْ يُعْتَقَ عَنْهَا رَقَبَةٌ مُؤْمِنَةٌ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَةٌ نُوبِيَّةٌ سَوْدَاءُ فَقَالَ ادْعُ بِهَا فَجَاءَ بِهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَنْ رَبُّكِ؟ قَالَتْ اللهُ قَالَ مَنْ أَنَا؟ قَالَتْ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ أَعْتِقْهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ

Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Masud that one of the Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a black slave- girl of his. He said, "Messenger of Allah, I must set a slave free who is a mumina. If you think that she is mumina, I will free her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ questioned her, "Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?" She said, "Yes." "Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "Yes." "Are you certain about the rising after death?" She said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Free her."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِجَارِيَةٍ لَهُ سَوْدَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلَىَّ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَرَاهَا مُؤْمِنَةً أُعْتِقُهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتُوقِنِينَ بِالْبَعْثِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَعْتِقْهَا

[AI] A Bedouin man came to the Messenger of Allah on the night of the sighting of the crescent moon of Ramadan, and he said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen the moon." The Messenger of Allah asked him, "Do you testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" The man replied, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah then said, "Proclaim to the people to begin fasting." This narration was reported by Al-Fadl ibn Musa from Sufyan Ath-Thawri.

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ أَعْرَابِيٌّ لَيْلَةَ هِلَالِ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ «أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَتَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَنَادِ فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَصُومُوا» وَهَكَذَا رَوَاهُ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ

[AI] "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen the crescent moon." He said, "Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then announce that the people should fast."

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ «أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَنَادَى أَنْ يَصُومُوا»

قَالَ أَتى النَّبِيّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلَى أُمِّي رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً وَعِنْدِي أَمَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيّ ﷺ ائْتِنِي بِهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَعْتِقْهَا وهذا الحديث قد رُوِيَ بنحو معناه عَنِ النَّبِيّ ﷺ مِنْ وُجُوهٍ بِأَلْفَاظٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ نَذْكُرُ كُلَّ لَفْظٍ مِنْهَا فِي مَوْضِعِهِ بِإِسْنَادِهِ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have a black foreign servant girl, and I have a debt on me". He said, "Bring her to me". He then asked her, "Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?" She said, "Yes". He asked her, "Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "Yes". He said, "Then free her".

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةً وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ أَعْجَمِيَّةٌ فَقَالَ ائْتِنِي بِهَا فَقَالَ «أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَأَعْتِقْهَا»

[AI] The messenger of Allah ﷺ was visited by a woman accompanied by a servant who was black. The woman said, "O messenger of Allah, I have a believing slave whom I am responsible for. Can I free her?" The messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Where is Allah?" She replied, "In the heavens." He asked her, "Who am I?" She answered, "You are his messenger." He then asked her, "Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the messenger of Allah?" She said, "Yes." He asked her, "Do you believe in what has come from Allah?" She replied, "Yes." He said, "Free her, as she is a believer."

أَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ امْرَأَةٌ وَمَعَهَا جَارِيَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ فَقَالَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً أَفَتُجِزِئُ عَنِّي هَذِهِ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَيْنَ اللهُ؟» قَالَتْ فِي السَّمَاءِ قَالَ «فَمَنْ أَنَا؟» قَالَتْ أَنْتَ رَسُولُهُ قَالَ «أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتُؤْمِنِينَ بِمَا جَاءَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ؟ قَالَتْ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ «أَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ»

[AI] An Arab man came to the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the sighting of the moon of Ramadan and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen the new moon." The Prophet asked him, "Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet then proclaimed, "Fast tomorrow." This narration has been reported by Abu Asim from Al-Thawri, with an unbroken chain of transmission. It has also been narrated by others from Al-Thawri through a disconnected chain of transmission.

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ هِلَالِ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَنَادَى أَنْ صُومُوا وَكَذَلِكَ رُوِيَ عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ مَوْصُولًا وَرَوَاهُ غَيْرُهُمَا عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ مُرْسَلًا

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِجَارِيَةٍ لَهُ سَوْدَاءَ فَقَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً أَفَأُعْتِقُ هَذِهِ؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتُوقِنِينَ بِالْبَعْثِ مِنْ بَعْدِ الْمَوْتِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْتِقْهَا هَذَا مُرْسَلٌ وَقَدْ مَضَى مَوْصُولًا بِبَعْضِ مَعْنَاهُ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أُمِّي أَوْصَتْ إِلِيَّ أَنْ أَعْتِقْ عَنْهَا رَقَبَةً وَإِنَّ عِنْدِي جَارِيَةً سَوْدَاءَ نُوبِيَّةً فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ادْعُ بِهَا فَقَالَ مَنْ رَبُّكِ؟ قَالَتْ اللهُ قَالَ فَمَنْ أَنَا؟ قَالَتْ رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ أَعْتِقْهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ

[AI] A man from the Ansar came to the Prophet ﷺ with a black slave woman and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a believing slave woman. If you consider her to be a believer, I will set her free." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?" She said, "Yes." He asked her, "Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "Yes." He asked her, "Do you believe in the resurrection after death?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Set her free, for she is a believer." This narration has been mentioned regarding Awf ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah from Ubaidullah ibn Utbah from Abu Hurairah, and it has also been narrated regarding Awf from his father, from his grandfather, and it has been cited in the book of Az-Zuhar.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِوَلِيدَةٍ سَوْدَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةٌ مُؤْمِنَةٌ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَرَى هَذِهِ مُؤْمِنَةً أُعْتِقْهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَفَتُؤْمِنِينَ بِالْبَعْثِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَعْتِقْهَا هَذَا مُرْسَلٌ وَقَدْ قِيلَ عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ وَقَدْ قِيلَ عَنْ عَوْنٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ وَقَدْ مَضَى فِي كِتَابِ الظِّهَارِ

("أتشهدينَ أن لا إله إلا الله؟ ، قالت: نعم، قال: أتشهدين أنِّى رسول الله؟ قالت: نعم. قال: أتؤمنين بالبعث بعد الموت؟ قالت: نعم. قال: أَعتِقها".

"عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ: أَتَى النَّبِىَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ بِجَارِيَة سَوْدَاءَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ الله إِنَّ أُمِّى مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا رَقَبَةٌ مُؤْمنَةٌ فَهَلْ تَجْزِى هَذِه عَنْهَا؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : أيْنَ الله؟ فَأوْمَأتْ بِرَأسِهَا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ أنَا؟ قَالَتْ: رَسُولُ الله ﷺ قَالَ: أَعْتِقْهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ".

"عَنْ عُبَيد الله بن عَبد الله بن عُتْبَةَ، عَن رَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ: جَاءَ بِأَمَةٍ سَوْداءَ إلىَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً، فَإِن تَرَى هَذِهِ مُؤْمِنَةً أعْتِقهَا، فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ قَالَت: نَعمَ قَالَ: أَتَشْهَدين أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَتُؤْمِنِينَ بِالْبَعْث بَعْدَ الْمَوتِ؟ قَالَتْ: نَعَم، قَالَ: أعْتِقهَا".
