اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا جَلَسَ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ قَالَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَتَقُولُ كَلَامًا مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُهُ فِيمَا خَلَا فَقَالَ هَذَا كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ مِنَ الْمَجْلِسِ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ رُوِيَ عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to get up from the assembly he used to say toward the end:
subḥānak Allāhummā wa-bi-ḥamdika, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa-atūbu ilayka
(Glory be to You. O Allah and with Your praise, I testify that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness, and turn to You in repentance.)
A man asked: Messenger of Allah! you utter the words now which you did not do in the past? He replied: ˹This is a˺ kaffarah (expiation) for what takes place in the assembly.
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ بِأَخَرَةٍ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ مِنَ الْمَجْلِسِ:
(سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ)
فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَتَقُولُ قَوْلاً مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُهُ فِيمَا مَضَى قَالَ: «كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ»
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from that sitting of his: ‘Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You, (Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilaik)’ whatever occurred in that sitting would be forgiven to him.”
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ جَلَسَ فِي مَجْلِسٍ فَكَثُرَ فِيهِ لَغَطُهُ فَقَالَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُومَ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ ذَلِكَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ إِلاَّ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ ذَلِكَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ وَعَائِشَةَ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ صَحِيحٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ سُهَيْلٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to get up from the assembly he used to say in the last. Glory be to Thee. O Allah, and I begin with praise of Thee, I testify that there is no god but Thou; I ask Thy pardon, and return to Thee in repentance. The man asked: Messenger of Allah! you utter the words now which you did not do in the past? He replied: (This is an) atonement for what takes place in the assembly. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite the following supplication at the end of a gathering: "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk." One of us said to him, "We have never heard you recite this supplication before." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "It is a form of seeking forgiveness for whatever occurred in the gathering."

لَمَّا كَانَ بِأَخَرَةٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ قَالَ «سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَتَقُولُ الْآنَ كَلَامًا مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُهُ فِيمَا خَلَا فَقَالَ «هَذَا كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجَالِسِ»
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to say "Subhanak Allahumma rabbi wa bihamdik, la ilaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk" whenever he would rise from a gathering. So, I asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, why do you often say these words when you rise?" He replied, "Whoever says these words when rising from a gathering, all his sins committed in that gathering will be forgiven."
مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ مِنْ مَجْلِسٍ إِلَّا قَالَ «سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبِّي وَبِحَمْدِكَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ» فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا تَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ إِذَا قُمْتَ قَالَ «لَا يَقُولُهُنَّ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حِينَ يَقُومُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ إِلَّا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسِ»
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever says, 'SubhanAllah wa bihamdihi, Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk,' in a gathering of remembrance, it will be like a seal stamping it on him. And whoever says it in a gathering of idle talk, it will be an expiation for him."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ قَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ فَقَالَهَا فِي مَجْلِسِ ذِكْرٍ كَانَتْ كَالطَّابِعِ يُطْبَعُ عَلَيْهِ وَمَنْ قَالَهَا فِي مَجْلِسِ لَغْوٍ كَانَتْ كَفَّارَةً لَهُ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say at the end of a lengthy gathering: "Glory be to You, O Allah, and Praise be to You. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except You. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You." Some of us said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have never heard you say this before." He said, "This is a expiation for anything that occurs in the gathering."
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِآخِرِهِ إِذَا طَالَ الْمَجْلِسُ قَالَ «سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ» فَقَالَ بَعْضُنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْقَوْلَ مَا كُنَّا نَسْمَعُهُ مِنْكَ قَالَ «هَذَا كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ»
[Machine] "When the companions of the Prophet ﷺ gathered around him and he wanted to get up, he would say, 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk. Amiltu su'an wa thalamtu nafsi faghfirli, fa innahu la yaghfiru adh-dhunuba illa anta.' We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, did you come up with these words?' He said, 'Yes, Jibril came to me and said, O Muhammad, these are the expiation for gatherings.'"
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُهُ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَنْهَضَ قَالَ «سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ عَمِلْتُ سُوءًا وَظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ» فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذِهِ كَلِمَاتٌ أَحْدَثْتَهُنَّ؟ قَالَ أَجَلْ جَاءَنِي جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ لِي يَا مُحَمَّدُ هُنَّ كَفَّارَةُ الْمَجَالِسِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no man who is sitting in a gathering and says, when he intends to leave it, 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik' (Glory and praise be to You, O Allah, there is no deity worthy of worship except You. I seek forgiveness from You and repent unto You), except that he will be forgiven for what occurred in that gathering." I narrated this hadith to Yazid ibn Khusaifah, who said that Saib ibn Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to him from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the same way.
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ يَكُونُ فِي مَجْلِسٍ فَيَقُولُ حِينَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَقُومَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ إِلَّا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسِ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ يَزِيدَ بْنَ خُصَيْفَةَ فَقَالَ هَكَذَا حَدَّثَنِي السَّائِبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever says 'SubhanAllah wa bihamdihi, Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, Ashhadu alla ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk' in a gathering of remembrance, it will be like a seal on him. And whoever says it in a gathering of idle talk, it will be an expiation for him."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ قَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ فَقَالَهَا فِي مَجْلِسِ ذِكْرٍ كَانَ كالطَّابَعُ يُطْبَعُ عَلَيْهِ وَمَنْ قَالَهَا فِي مَجْلِسِ لَغْوٍ كَانَتْ كَفَّارَةً لَهُ
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to say this supplication when the gathering prolonged: "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk." One of us said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do not hear this statement from you often?" He ﷺ said, "This is the expiation for what occurs in the gathering."
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَخَرَةٍ إِذَا طَالَ الْمَجْلِسُ قَالَ «سُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ» قَالَ بَعْضُنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْكَ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ هَذَا الْقَوْلَ مَا لَنَا نَسْمَعُهُ مِنْكَ؟ قَالَ «هَذِهِ كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ»
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say the following when his companions gathered around him and he wanted to get up: "Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You. I have done wrong and have oppressed myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You." We said, "O Messenger of Allah, are these words that you have newly introduced?" He replied, "Yes, Gabriel ﷺ came to me and said, 'O Muhammad, these are the expiations for the gathering."
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَخَرَةٍ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُهُ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَنْهَضَ قَالَ «سُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ عَمِلْتُ سُوءًا وَظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ» قَالَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ هَذِهِ كَلِمَاتٌ أَحْدَثْتَهُنَّ؟ قَالَ أَجَلْ جَاءَنِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ هُنَّ كَفَّارَاتُ الْمَجْلِسِ
[Machine] They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are the words that we have heard you saying?" He said: "The words that Jibril (Gabriel), ﷺ , taught me. They are: 'Subhanak Allahumma Wa Bihamdika, Ashhadu An La Ilaha Illa Anta, Astaghfiruka Wa Atubu Ilayk.'"
10190 Ahmad bin Sulaiman informed us, he said: Ubaidullah narrated to us from Isra'il from Mansur from Fudayl bin 'Umar from Ziyad from Abu Al-'Aliyah.
قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا كَلِمَاتٌ سَمِعْنَاكَ تَقُولُهُنَّ؟ قَالَ كَلِمَاتٌ عَلَّمَنِيهِنَّ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ كَفَّارَةُ الْمَجْلِسِ سُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ 10190 أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ
اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَفَّارَةُ الْمَجْلِسِ أَنْ يقول الرجل إذا قام منه سبحانك الله وبحمده لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَهذا لفظه أو معناه وهذا الحديثُ لا نعلمُ يروى عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه إلا بهذا الإسناد

اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم إِذَا جَلَسَ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ قَالَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إلاَّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ قَالُوا يَا رَسولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ لَتَقُولُ كَلامًا مَا كُنْتَ تقوله فيما خلا فقال هذا كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ مِنَ الْمَجْلِسِوَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لاَ نعلمُهُ يُرْوَى عَن أَبِي بَرْزَةَ إلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ
اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم كَفَّارَةُ الْمَجْلِسِ أَنْ تَقُولَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَوَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ يُروَى عَن أَنَس إلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وعُثمَان بْنُ مَطَرٍ لَيِّنُ الْحَدِيثِ وَقَدْ رَوَى عَنْهُ مُسْلِمٌ وَغَيْرُهُ
