I said: Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting ˹more˺ in any month like you fast in Shaʿbān. He said, "People are heedless in that month between Rajab and Ramaḍān and it is the month where deeds are raised up to the Lord of the worlds. I was a man who was more given than others to sexual intercourse with women. When the month of Ramadan came, I feared lest I should have intercourse with my wife, and this evil should remain with me till the morning. So I made my wife like my mother's back to me till the end of Ramadan. But one night when she was waiting upon me, something of her was revealed. Suddenly I jumped upon her. When the morning came I went to my people and informed them about this matter. I said: Go along with me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said: No, by Allah. So I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him and informed him of the matter. He said: Have you really committed it, Salamah? I said: I committed it twice, Messenger of Allah. I am content with the Commandment of Allah, the Exalted; so take a decision about me according to what Allah has shown you. He said: Free a slave. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth, I do not possess a neck other than this: and I struck the surface of my neck. He said: Then fast two consecutive months. I said: Whatever I suffered is due to fasting. He said: Feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth, we passed the night hungry; there was no food in our house. He said: Then go to the collector of sadaqah of Banu Zurayq; he must give it to you. Then feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates; and you and your family eat the remaining dates. Then I came back to my people, and said (to them): I found with you poverty and bad opinion; and I found with the Prophet ﷺ prosperity and good opinion. He has commanded me to give alms to you. Ibn al-Ala' added: Ibn Idris said: Bayadah is a sub-clan of Banu Zurayq.

But you do and do whatever you want.’” He said: “So I left and I went to the Messenger of Allah, and informed him of my case. He said: ‘You are the one who did that?” I said: ‘I am the one.’ He said: ‘You are the one who did that?” I said: ‘I am the one.’ He said: ‘You are the one who did that?” I said: ‘I am the one, it is before you, so give me Allah’s judgment, for I shall be patient with that.’ He said: ‘Free a slave.’” He said: “I struck the sides of my neck with me hands, and said: ‘No by the One Who sent you with the Truth! I possess nothing besides it.’ He said: ‘Then fast for two months’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Did this occur to me other than when I was fasting?’ He said: ‘Then feed sixty poor people.’ I said: ‘By the One Who sent you with the Truth! We have spent these nights of ours hungry without an evening meal.’ He said: ‘Go to the one with the charity from Banu Ruzaiq, tell him to give it to you, then feed a Wasq of it, on your behalf, to sixty poor people. Then help yourself and your dependants with the remainder of it.’” He said: “I returned to my people and said: ‘I found dejection and bad ideas with you, and I found liberalness and blessing with the Messenger of Allah. He ordered me to take your charity, so give it to me.’ So they gave it to me.”

He ordered me to take your charity, so give it to me.’ So they gave it to me.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3299)

(Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2213)

The messenger of Marwan whom he sent to Umm Ma'qil reported to me. She said: AbuMa'qil accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during hajj. When he came (to her) she said: You know that hajj is incumbent on me. They walked until they visited him (i.e. the Prophet) and she asked (him): Messenger of Allah, hajj is due from me, and AbuMa'qil has a camel. AbuMa'qil said: She spoke the truth, I have dedicated it to the cause of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give it to her, that is in the cause of Allah. So he gave the camel to her. She then said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has become aged and ill. Is there any action which would be sufficient for me as my hajj? He replied: umrah performed during Ramadan is sufficient as hajj.

[Machine] Marwan's messenger informed me that he was sent to Umm Maqil. He said that Abu Maqil came with the Prophet ﷺ as a pilgrim. When Abu Maqil arrived, Umm Maqil said, "You know that I have a Hajj obligation and you have a young camel, so give it to me so that I can perform Hajj on it." He said to her, "You know that I have dedicated it for the sake of Allah." She said, "Then give me the straw of your date-palm trees." He said, "You know that it is the provision for my family." She said, "But I talk to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he speaks to me." They continued walking until they entered upon him (the Prophet). She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a Hajj obligation and my husband has a young camel." Abu Maqil said, "You have spoken the truth; I have devoted it to the sake of Allah." The Prophet said, "Give it to her and let her perform Hajj on it, for it is dedicated to the sake of Allah." When he gave her the young camel, she said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am an old woman and I am sick. Is there any alternative act that can compensate for my Hajj obligation?" He said, "Perform `Umrah in Ramadan, for it will compensate for your Hajj obligation."

[Machine] His mother Zainab went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Ma'qil promised me that he would not perform Hajj without me, so he performed Hajj on his camel and I was unable to bear it. I asked him for a young she-camel, but he said it was the provision for his children. I asked him for his older she-camel, but he said it was for the sake of Allah and he would not give it to me. Abu Ma'qil, what do you say, O mother of Ma'qil?" She said, "You have spoken the truth." He said, "Give her your young camel, for indeed, Hajj is the path of Allah." So he gave her his young camel. She said, "I am a woman who is sick and old, and I fear that I will not be able to perform Hajj before I die. Is there anything that can compensate for the Hajj?" He said, "Yes, performing Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj." So she performed Umrah in Ramadan.

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, and we had a camel, AbuMa'qil dedicated it to the cause of Allah. Then we suffered from a disease, and AbuMa'qil died. The Prophet ﷺ went out (for hajj). When he finished the hajj, I came to him. He said (to me): Umm Ma'qil, what prevented you from coming out for hajj along with us? She said: We resolved (to do so), but AbuMa'qil died. We had a camel on which we could perform hajj, but AbuMa'qil had bequeathed it to the cause of Allah. He said: Why did you not go out (for hajj) upon it, for hajj is in the cause of Allah? If you miss this hajj along with us, perform umrah during Ramadan, for it is like hajj. She used to say: hajj is hajj, and umrah is umrah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it to me: I do not know whether it was peculiar to me.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to perform hajj. A woman said to her husband: Let me perform hajj along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: I have nothing on which I can let you perform hajj. She said: You may perform hajj on your such-and-such camel. He said: That is dedicated to the cause of Allah, the Exalted. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: My wife has conveyed her greetings and the blessings of Allah to you. She has asked about performing hajj along with you. She said (to me): Let me perform hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said (to her): I have nothing upon which I can let you perform hajj. She said: Let me perform hajj on your such-and-such camel. I said: That is dedicated to the cause of Allah, The Exalted. He replied: If you let her perform hajj on it, that would be in the cause of Allah. He said: She has also requested me to ask you: What is that action which is equivalent to performing hajj with you? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Convey my greetings, the mercy of Allah and His blessings to her and tell her that umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to performing hajj along with me.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to perform Hajj, so a woman said to her husband, "Let me go for Hajj with the Messenger of Allah." He replied, "I do not have anything to perform Hajj with." She said, "Take me with you on your camel." He responded, "That is what I am anticipating for myself and our child." She said, "Take me with you on your riding animal." He said, "That is what is needed in the way of Allah." She said, "Then sell your dates and raisins." He said, "That is our sustenance, yours and mine." When the Prophet ﷺ returned from Makkah, the woman sent a message to him, saying, "Peace be upon you, Messenger of Allah. Please ask him (her husband) what credits a Hajj with you." Her husband went to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my wife sends greetings to you, and she said that she asked me to take her for Hajj with you. I told her I do not have anything. Then she said, 'Take me on my riding animal.' I responded, 'That is what is needed in the way of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'If you had taken her, you would have been rewarded for performing Hajj in the way of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ then laughed in astonishment at her eagerness to perform Hajj." He (the husband) continued, "She also requested me to ask you what is equivalent to a Hajj with you." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Tell her peace and mercy from me, and inform her that performing Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to a Hajj with me."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to perform Hajj, and a woman said to her husband, "Take me with you to perform Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Her husband replied, "I don't have anything to afford your Hajj." She then asked him to take her on his camel. He replied, "That camel is reserved for the cause of Allah." [Machine] So a woman said to her husband, "Perform the Hajj pilgrimage with me alongside the Prophet ﷺ." He replied, "I do not have enough to perform the Hajj for both of us." She said, "Perform the Hajj pilgrimage for me using your camel, Fulan." He said, "That camel is reserved for the sake of Allah." She said, "Then perform the Hajj pilgrimage for me using your slave." He said, "That is reserved for me and our son." She said, "Then sell your date harvest." He said, "That is our sustenance and your sustenance." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, she sent her husband to the Prophet ﷺ, saying, "Send him my greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah, and ask him if there is a lesser form of pilgrimage that I can perform with him." So her husband went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my wife sends you her greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah. She asked me to perform the Hajj pilgrimage for her, and I told her that I do not have enough to perform it for her." She said, "Perform the Hajj pilgrimage for me using your camel, Fulan." I said, "That is reserved for the sake of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you had performed it for her, it would have been in the way of Allah." She said, "Then perform the Hajj pilgrimage for me using your slave." I said, "That is reserved for me and our son." She said, "Then sell your date harvest." At this, the Prophet ﷺ laughed at her eagerness for the Hajj pilgrimage. Ibrahim ibn Al-Hajjaj mentioned in his narration of this incident that the Prophet ﷺ laughed with amazement at her eagerness for the Hajj pilgrimage. He said, "She ordered me to ask you if there is a lesser form of Hajj that is equivalent to performing it with you." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Send her my greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah, and inform her that an 'Umrah pilgrimage during Ramadan is equivalent to performing the Hajj pilgrimage with me." The judge said, "That is how it happened."

Once the people doubted the appearance of the moon of Ramadan, and intended neither to offer the tarawih prayer nor to keep fast. A bedouin came from al-Harrah and testified that he had sighted the moon. He was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He asked: Do you testify that there is no god but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes; and he testified that he had sighted the moon. He commanded Bilal who announced to the people to offer the tarawih prayer and to keep fast.

[Machine] That they neither stood nor fasted. So, an Arab of the Bedouins came and testified that he had seen the crescent moon. So, the Prophet ﷺ was brought to him, and he said: "Do you testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." And he testified that he had seen the crescent moon. So, he ordered Bilal to announce to the people to stand and fast. Abu Dawood narrated it and a group also narrated it from Simak from Ikrimah as a Mursal hadith, and no one mentioned standing except Hammam bin Salamah. Al-Shaykh said: This is the Hadith of Hammam.
