[Machine] An Arab came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have seen the crescent moon, meaning the crescent of Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?" The man replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ asked again, "Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" Again, the man answered, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Bilal, announce to the people to fast tomorrow."  

البيهقي:٧٩٧٣ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا أَبُو الْبَخْتَرِيِّ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شَاكِرٍ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجُعْفِيُّ ثنا زَائِدَةُ عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ يَعْنِي هِلَالَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ يَا بِلَالُ أَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَصُومُوا غَدًا 7974 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارِ بْنِ الرَّيَّانِ ثنا الْوَلِيدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ يَعْنِي هِلَالَ رَمَضَانَ

A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I have sighted the moon. Al-Hasan added in his version: that is, of Ramadan. He asked: Do you testify that there is no god but Allah? He replied: Yes. He again asked: Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah? He replied: Yes. and he testified that he had sighted the moon. He said: Bilal, announce to the people that they must fast tomorrow.

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلاَلَ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ يَعْنِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ يَا بِلاَلُ أَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ فَلْيَصُومُوا غَدًا  

tirmidhi:691 – Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl > Muḥammad b. al-Ṣabbāḥ > al-Walīd b. Abū Thawr > Simāk > ʿIkrimah > Ibn ʿAbbās

Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Yes.' So he said: 'O Bilal! Announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow.'"

قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِيهِ اخْتِلاَفٌ وَرَوَى سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ وَغَيْرُهُ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُرْسَلاً وَأَكْثَرُ أَصْحَابِ سِمَاكٍ رَوَوْا عَنْ سِمَاكٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُرْسَلاً وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عِنْدَ أَكْثَرِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ قَالُوا تُقْبَلُ شَهَادَةُ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ فِي الصِّيَامِ وَبِهِ يَقُولُ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ وَالشَّافِعِيُّ وَأَحْمَدُ وَأَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ لاَ يُصَامُ إِلاَّ بِشَهَادَةِ رَجُلَيْنِ وَلَمْ يَخْتَلِفْ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ فِي الإِفْطَارِ أَنَّهُ لاَ يُقْبَلُ فِيهِ إِلاَّ شَهَادَةُ رَجُلَيْنِ
