13. Book of Fasting
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a man who was getting bloodletting done on the seventeenth day of Ramadan, so he said, "The one who gets bloodletting done and the one who does it for others have broken their fast." Abu Muhammad Al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Ishaq Al-Isfaraini told us, Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Al-Bara' told us, 'Ali bin Al-Madinani said, "Shaddad bin Aws narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he saw a man getting bloodletting done in Ramadan." Aasim Al-Ahwal narrated it from Abu Qilabah, who narrated it from Abu Al-Ash'ath, and Yahya bin Abi Kathir narrated it from Abu Qilabah, who narrated it from Abu Asma', who narrated it from Thawban. "I do not see the authenticity of the two narrations except as Sahih, for it is possible that he heard it from all of them." As for the permission for cupping for the fasting person, it was reported by Muhammad ibn Isma'il Al-Bukhari in Al-Jami'al-Sahih.
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ihtijam while he was fasting. So now, listen to the words of the Imam of Ahl al-Hadith in his time without arguing about this narration, so that you may be guided by it to the most correct opinion."
[Machine] Abu Ali Al-Hafiz informed me that Abu Ya'la said: Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Harbin narrated to us, and Rawh ibn Ubadah narrated from Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah, from Matar Al-Warraqi, from Bakr ibn Abdullah Al-Muzani, from Abu Rafa' who said: We entered upon Abu Musa, and he was cupping himself after Maghrib. So I said: Did you not get cupped during the day? He replied: Are you commanding me to pour out my blood while I am fasting? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The one who performs cupping and the one who is cupped both break their fast."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: While I was sleeping, two men came to me and held my upper arms and took me to a steep mountain. They said to me, "Climb." I said, "I am not able to climb." They said, "We will make it easy for you." So I climbed until I reached the top of the mountain. When I was on the top, I heard loud voices. I said, "What are these voices?" They said, "This is the crying of the people of Hell." Then they took me until I saw people hanging by their hamstrings, with the corners of their mouths torn and bleeding. I said, "Who are these?" They said, "These are the people who break their fast before it is permissible to do so."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Fasting is not merely abstaining from food and drink. Rather, fasting is from vain talk and immorality. So if someone argues with you or tries to pick a fight with you, say: "I am fasting."

I was in good spirits one day and kissed (my wife) when I was fasting. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I have done something serious. I kissed (my wife) when I was fasting. This month, that is, Ramadan, happend to come to me (while I am on a journey), and I find myself strong enough (to fast) as I am young, and I find that it is easier for me to fast than to postpone it, and i becomes debt due from me. Does it bring me more reward, Messenger of Allah, if I fast, or if I break ? He replied: Whichever you like, Hamzah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2403)

[Machine] He informed him that Ibn Abbas and some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ sent me to Umm Salamah to ask her on which days did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast the most? She said, "On Saturdays and Sundays."
So I returned to them and informed them, and it seemed as if they denied it. So they all went to her and said, "We sent this to you about so and so and you mentioned that you said so and so." She said, "Yes, it is true that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast the most on the days of Saturday and Sunday, and he used to say, 'They are the days of celebration for the polytheists and I want to differ from them.'"
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ while we were with him. She said: Messenger of Allah, my husband, Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, beats me when I pray, and makes me break my fast when I keep a fast, and he does not offer the dawn prayer until the sun rises. He asked Safwan, who was present, about what she had said. He replied: Messenger of Allah, as for her statement "he beats me when I pray", she recites two surahs (during prayer) and I have prohibited her (to do so). He (the Prophet) said: If one surah is recited (during prayer), that is sufficient for the people. (Safwan continued:) As regards her saying "he makes me break my fast," she dotes on fasting; I am a young man, I cannot restrain myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day: A woman should not fast except with the permission of her husband. (Safwan said:) As for her statement that I do not pray until the sun rises, we are a people belonging to a class, and that (our profession of supplying water) is already known about us. We do not awake until the sun rises. He said: When you awake, offer your prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2459)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, "Friday is a day of celebration, so do not make the day of your celebration a day of fasting unless you fast either before it or after it."
[Machine] I asked Abu Dharr, and I said, "Did you ask the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, about Laylat al-Qadr?" He said, "I used to ask people about it." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, inform me about Laylat al-Qadr. Is it in Ramadan or in another month?" He said, "Verily, it is in Ramadan." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is it with the Prophets? When the Prophets are taken, is it also taken until the Day of Resurrection?" He said, "Indeed, it is taken until the Day of Resurrection." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, in which Ramadan is it?" He said, "Seek it in the first ten days and the last ten days." He said, "Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, spoke and I was distracted by his words, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, in which of the twenty days is it?" He said, "Seek it in the last ten days, and do not ask me about anything after that." The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then spoke and I was distracted by his words. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I swear by you, tell me, or if you do not tell me, in which of the ten days is it?" He became angry with me in a way that no one had seen him angry before or after, and he said, "If Allah willed, He would have made it known to you. Seek it in the last seven days."
[Machine] Have you heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Try to seek it in the last ten nights, on a night which you see?" He asked, and some said it's on the first night, and some others said it's on the third night, and another said it's on the fifth night. And I remained silent, so he said, "Why are you not speaking?" So I said, "If you permit me, O Amir al-Mu'minin, I will speak." He said, "Did I not send you except to speak?" I said, "Shall I tell you my opinion?" He said, "We ask you about that." I said, "I believe that there are seven. Allah mentioned seven skies, and there are seven earths, and He created man from seven (elements), and plants emerge from the earth in seven (days)." He said, "This is what I was informed of, and I know it. Have you seen something that I don't know? What do you say about the plants that emerge from the earth in seven?" I said, "Allah says, 'We have split open the earth.' (Surah Abasa, 26), until His saying, 'And fruit and pasture (for livestock).' (Surah Abasa, 31). And pasture is what the animals eat and not humans." Umar said, "Are you amazed that this young man has spoken in a manner that his affairs have not yet gathered? By Allah, I do not see any other saying except what you have said." He said, "And he (Umar) said, 'I had ordered you not to speak until they spoke, and now I order you to speak with them.'" Ibn Idris narrated this from Abdul-Malik, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, with a similar narration.
[Machine] I mentioned the Night of Decree to Abu Bakrah and he said, "I only seek it in the last ten nights, either in the ninth, seventh, fifth, or in the last night." He used to pray in the last ten nights the entire year, and when the last ten nights started, he would strive even more.
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic sentence is: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "The voluntary fasting person is the master of his own self; if he wants, he fasts, and if he wants, he breaks his fast."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who observes voluntary fasting has the choice to either fast or break it."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2025)
The Prophet ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. One year he did not observe i'tikaf. When the next year came, he observed i'tikaf for twenty nights (i.e. days). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2463)
[Machine] The prophet ﷺ said, "The person who is in I'tikaf (seclusion for worship) does not have to fast except if they wish to do so voluntarily."
[Machine] To stay overnight and the next day he sought the advice of the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Stay overnight and observe fasting for a day." This is the second Hadith.
[Machine] The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "There is no seclusion (i'tikaf) except with fasting." The two sheikhs, Sufyan ibn Husayn and Abdullah ibn Yazid, did not object.
[Machine] "He has made it permissible for the elderly sheikh who is unable to fast, and ordered that he feeds the one whom he knows cannot bear it."
[Machine] "To fast and feed a poor person every day and not skip any day."
"I heard An-Nu'man bin Bashir on the minbar in Hims saying: "We prayed Qiyam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during Ramadan on the night of the twenty-third until one-third of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-fifth until one-half of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-seventh until we thought that we would miss Al-Falah- that is what they used to call suhur." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1606)
