I asked Sahl bin Hunaif, "Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ saying anything about Al-Khawarij?" He said, "I heard him saying while pointing his hand towards Iraq. "There will appear in it (i.e, Iraq) some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will go out from (leave) Islam as an arrow darts through the game's body.' "

سَمِعْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ فِي الْخَوَارِجِ شَيْئًا قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ وَأَهْوَى بِيَدِهِ قِبَلَ الْعِرَاقِ يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ مُرُوقَ السَّهْمِ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "There will emerge from the East some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not exceed their throats and who will go out of (renounce) the religion (Islam) as an arrow passes through the game, and they will never come back to it unless the arrow, comes back to the middle of the bow (by itself) (i.e., impossible). The people asked, "What will their signs be?" He said, "Their sign will be the habit of shaving (of their beards and their heads). (Fath-ul-Bari, Page 322, Vol. 17th)

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ يَخْرُجُ نَاسٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَشْرِقِ وَيَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ثُمَّ لاَ يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ حَتَّى يَعُودَ السَّهْمُ إِلَى فُوقِهِ قِيلَ مَا سِيمَاهُمْ قَالَ سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ أَوْ قَالَ التَّسْبِيدُ

Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ making a mention of the Khawarij? He said: I heard him say (and he pointed with his hand towards the east) that these would be a people who would recite the Qur'an with their tongues and it would not go beyond their collar bones. They would pass clean through their religion just as the arrow passes through the prey.

سَمِعْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْمَشْرِقِ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ لاَ يَعْدُو تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

"In the end of time there will come a people young in years, foolish in minds, reciting the Qur'an which will not go beyond their throats, uttering sayings from the best of creatures, going through the religion as an arrow goes through the target."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْرُجُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ أَحْدَاثُ الأَسْنَانِ سُفَهَاءُ الأَحْلاَمِ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مِنْ قَوْلِ خَيْرِ الْبَرِيَّةِ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'There are those who recite the Qur'an but it does not go any deeper than their collarbones. They will pass through Islam like an arrow passing through its target.'"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيَقْرَأَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

“Some people will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes out of the prey. They will recite the Qurʿan but it will go no further than their collar bones. Glad tidings to the one who kills them and they kill him. Their sign will be a man with a deformed arm.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ قَوْمًا يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ طُوبَى لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ وَقَتَلُوهُ عَلامَتُهُمْ رَجُلٌ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿAt the end of time, there will be people who recite Qurʿan but it will go no further than their collarbones; they will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes out of the prey. Fighting them is a duty upon every Muslim.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَكُونُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ قِتَالُهُمْ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'There are those who recite the Qur'an but it does not go any deeper than their collarbones. They will pass through Islam like an arrow passing through its target.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 171)

وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَيَقْرَأَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ أَقْوَامٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "There will come a people from the east who recite the Quran, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through its target and then continues on its way. They will not return to it, just as the arrow does not return to where it was shot from. It was asked, 'What will be their sign?' He said, 'Their sign will be Shaving and Wearing of Sufrah.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ يَخْرُجُ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَشْرِقِ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَالدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ حَتَّى يَعُودَ السَّهْمُ عَلَى فُوقِهِ قِيلَ مَا سِيمَاهُمْ؟ قَالَ سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ وَالتَّسْبِيتُ

[AI] Uqbah bin Amer, may Allah and His Messenger bless him, said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'There will come a time when men will recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion just as the arrow passes through the prey.'"

عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَيَقْرَأَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ رِجَالٌ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

[AI] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Indeed, there are people from my ummah whose characteristic is shaving their heads. They recite the Quran, but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through its target. They are the worst of creation and the created."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ أُنَاسًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي سِيمَاهُمْ التَّحْلِيقُ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily after me, there will be among my Ummah (nation) a group of people who recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats. They will leave the religion as an arrow leaves the bow, and they will not return to it. They are the worst of mankind and creatures."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ بَعْدِي مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَوْ سَيَكُونُ بَعْدِي مِنْ أُمَّتِي قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَلَاقِمَهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ»

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْخَوَارِجِ قَوْمٌ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ يَقْرَؤُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ قَوْمًا يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah saying, "There will emerge from this ummah people who will slip out of the religion as an arrow slips out of its target."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ يَقُولُ «يَخْرُجُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ نَاسٌ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ»

[AI] Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything about the Khawarij? He said, "I heard him say, 'A group will emerge among them who recite the Quran, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will leave the religion as an arrow leaves its target.'"

سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ فِي الْخَوَارِجِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ وَأَهْوَى بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْعِرَاقِ «يَخْرُجُ بَيْنَهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَأُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ»

[AI] I was in Damascus when they brought heads and placed them on the steps of the Damascus mosque. I saw Abu Umamah crying, so I asked him, "What makes you cry, O Abu Umamah?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There will be people in my Ummah who recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will abandon the religion as an arrow passes through a target. They will not return to it until the arrow returns to its notch.' A calamity awaits those who kill them, and they will kill him."

كُنْتُ بِدِمَشْقَ فَجَاءُوا بِرُءُوسٍ فَوَضَعُوهَا عَلَى دَرَجِ مَسْجِدِ دِمَشْقَ فَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ يَبْكِي فَقُلْتُ لَهُ مَا يُبْكِيكَ يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ فِي أُمَّتِي أُنَاسٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يَتَجَاوَزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَنْتَثِرُونَهُ كَمَا يَنْتَثِرُ الدَّقَلُ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ حَتَّى يَعُودَ السَّهْمُ عَلَى فَوْقِهِ شَرُّ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ السَّمَاءِ طُوبَى لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ وَقَتَلُوهُ»

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «يَخْرُجُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ مُرُوقَ السَّهْمِ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ قِتَالُهُمْ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ»

"إِنَّ أَقْوامًا يتعمَّقُونَ فِى الدِّين يمرُقونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يمرُقُ السهمُ من الرَّمِيَّةِ".

"إِنَّ بعْدِى مِنْ أُمتِى قوْمًا يَقْرَؤُونَ القُرآنَ لا يُجَاوِزُ حَلَاقِيمَهُم، يَخْرُجون مِن الدِّينِ كمَا يَخْرجٌ السَّهْمُ مِن الرمِيَّةِ، ثُمَّ لا يُعُودُونَ إِلَيْهِ، شرُّ الْخَلقِ وَالْخَلِيقةِ".

"إِنَّ نَاسًا من أُمُّتِى سيماهم التحليقُ يَقْرءُونَ القُرآنَ، لا يجاوزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ، يَمْرقُونَ من الدين كما يمرق السَّهْمُ من الرَّمِيَّةِ، هم شرُّ الخلقِ والخليقة"

"إِنَّ هذا وأصحابه يقرءُون القرآنَ، لا يجاوزُ تراقيَهُم، يمرُقونَ من الدين كما يمرُق السهمُ من الرَّمِيَّةِ، ثم لا يعودونَ إِليه حتى يعودَ السهُم في فُوقِه، فاقتلوهم، هم شرُّ البَرِيَّةِ".

"إِنَّهُ سيكُونُ في أُمَّتِى أُناسٌ يَقْرءُونَ القُرآنَ لا يجاوِزُ تراقِيهم ينَثْرُونَه كما ينثَرَ الدَّقَلُ (2) يَمْرُقُونَ من الدِّينِ كما يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ من الرَّمِيَّة ثُمَّ لا يعُودونَ فِيهِ حتَّى يعودَ السَّهْمُ على فُوقِهِ، شَرُّ قَتْلَى تحْتَ السماءِ، طُوبى لمن قتلَهم، أَوْ قتلُوه ".

"سَيَخْرُجُ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَأُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يجاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ، مِنَ الدِّين كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّة".

"سَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرآنَ رجَالٌ لاَ يُجاوِزُ حَناجرَهُمْ، يمُرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ".

"سيكُونُ بعْدِى مِنْ أُمَّتِى قَوْمٌ يقْرأُونَ الْقُرآن لَا يُجاوز حلَاقِيمَهم، يخْرجُونَ مِن الدِّين كَمَا يخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّة ثُمَّ لَا يعُودُونَ فِيهِ، هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ، سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ".

"لَيَقْرَأنَّ القُرآنَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلام كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِن الرَّمِيَّةِ".

"لَيَقْرَأن القُرآنَ رِجَالٌ لَا يُجَاوزُ تَرَاقِيَهُم، يَمْرُقُونَ مِن الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنْ الرَّمِيَّةِ".

"يَجئُ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَأُونَ الْقُرآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِن الرَّمِيَّةِ عَلَى فوقِهِ".

"يَجئُ قَوْمٌ مِنْ بَعْدِى مِنْ أُمتِّى يَقْرَأُونَ الْقْرآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَراقيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمَيَّةِ، ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ أَبَدًا، هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخِلِيقَةِ".

"يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْمَشْرِق أَقْوَامٌ مُحَلَّقَةٌ رُءُوسُهُمْ يَقرَأُون الْقُرآنَ بأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ لَا يَعْدُو تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِن الرَّمِيَّةِ".

"يَخْرُجُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَشْرِقِ قَومٌ يَقْرَأُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ".

"يَكُونُ مِنْ بَعْدِى قَوْمٌ يَقْرَأُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ، لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيه حَتَّى يَعُودَ السَّهْمُ إِلَى فُوقِهِ، طُوبَى لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ وَطُوبَى لِمَنْ قَتَلُوهُ، شَرُّ قَتْلَى أَظَلَّتْهُمُ السَّمَاءُ وَأَقَلَّتْهُمُ الأَرْضُ، كِلَابُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ".

"عَنْ أنسٍ قَالَ: سَمعْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ يَقُولُ: سَيَقْرَأ القُرآنَ رِجَالٌ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّميَّةِ".

"عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ نَاسًا مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ يَقْرأونَ الْقُرَآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَراقيهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، ثُمَّ لَا يُعودُونَ فِيهِ حَتَّى يَعُودَ عَلَى فُوقِهِ".
