7. Sūrat al-Aʾrāf

٧۔ سُورَةُ الأعرَاف

7.19 Stories of prior nations are narrated to teach a lesson.

٧۔١٩ مقطع في سُورَةُ الأعرَاف

quran:7:100

Has it not become clear to those who inherited the earth after its ˹previous˺ people that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins? But We seal over their hearts so they do not hear.  

Has it not been shown, ˹has it not˺ become clear, to those who inherit the earth, as a ˹place of˺ habitation, after, the destruction of, those who inhabited it that, (an is the softened form and constitutes the subject ˹of the verb˺, its noun having been omitted, in other words ˹understand it as˺ annahu), if We will, We could smite them, with chastisement, for their sins?, as We smote those before them? (the hamza in the four instances are meant to indicate rebuke, and the ˹particles˺ fa, ‘so’, and wa, ‘and’, which have been inserted in two instances ˹each˺, are meant to indicate a supplement; a variant reading ˹for a-wa-amina˺ has aw amina, ‘or do ˹they˺ feel secure’, in the ˹second˺ instance, as a supplement). And, We, seal up their hearts so that they do not hear, the admonition, in a way so as to reflect.
القرآن:٧:١٠٠

أَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لِلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْأَرْضَ مِنْ بَعْدِ أَهْلِهَا أَنْ لَوْ نَشَاءُ أَصَبْنَاهُمْ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۚ وَنَطْبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ  

{أو لم يهد} يتبيَّن {للذين يرثون الأرض} بالسكنى {من بعد} هلاك {أهلها أن} فاعل مخففة واسمها محذوف أي أنه {لو نشاء أصبناهم} بالعذاب {بذنوبهم} كما أصبنا من قبلهم. والهمزةُ في المواضع الأربعة للتوبيخ والفاء والواو الداخلة عليهما للعطف، وفي قراءة بسكون الواو في الموضع الأول عطفا بأو {و} نحن {نطبع} نختم {على قلوبهم فهم لا يسمعون} الموعظة سماع تدبر.
quran:7:101

Those cities - We relate to you, ˹O Muhammad˺, some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus does Allah seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.  

Those towns, which have been mentioned, We relate to you, O Muhammad (s), some of their tidings, ˹some of˺ the stories of their peoples. Verily their messengers brought them clear proofs, manifest miracles, but they would not believe, when these ˹signs˺came to them, in what they had denied, disbelieved in, before, before these ˹signs˺ came to them; nay, they persisted in disbelief. Thus does God seal up the hearts of the disbelievers.
القرآن:٧:١٠١

تِلْكَ الْقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنْبَائِهَا ۚ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَمَا كَانُوا لِيُؤْمِنُوا بِمَا كَذَّبُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ الْكَافِرِينَ  

{تلك القرى} التي مرَّ ذكرها {نقصُّ عليك} يا محمد {من أنبائها} أخبار أهلها {ولقد جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات} المعجزات الظاهرات {فما كانوا ليؤمنوا} عند مجيئهم {بما كذبوا} كفروا به {من قبل} قبل مجيئهم بل استمروا على الكفر {كذلك} الطبع {يطبع الله على قلوب الكافرين}.
quran:7:102

And We did not find for most of them any covenant; but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.  

And We did not find in most of them, that is, people, any covenant, that is, any loyalty to a covenant from the day the pledge was made. Nay (wa-in: in is softened) We found that most of them were indeed wicked.
القرآن:٧:١٠٢

وَمَا وَجَدْنَا لِأَكْثَرِهِمْ مِنْ عَهْدٍ ۖ وَإِنْ وَجَدْنَا أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَفَاسِقِينَ  

{وما وجدنا لأكثرهم} أي الناس {من عهد} أي وفاء بعهدهم يوم أخذ الميثاق {وإن} مخففة {وجدنا أكثرهم لفاسقين}.
