7. Sūrat al-Aʾrāf

٧۔ سُورَةُ الأعرَاف

7.3 Satan cunningly seduced Adam and Eve to disobey God. Their repentance and God's conditional acceptance.

٧۔٣ مقطع في سُورَةُ الأعرَاف

quran:7:19

And "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."  

And, He said, ‘O Adam, dwell, you (anta: this is reiterated in order to emphasise the subject of the verb uskun, ‘dwell’, and to supplement to it ˹what follows˺) and your wife, Eve (read Hawwā’), in the Garden, and eat from whence you will, but do not come near this tree, to eat of it — and this was wheat — lest you become evildoers’.
القرآن:٧:١٩

وَيَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنْتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ  

{و} قال {يا آدم اسكن أنت} تأكيد للضمير في اسكن ليعطف عليه {وزوجك} حواء بالمد {الجنة فكلا من حيث شئتما ولا تقربا هذه الشجرة} بالأكل منها وهي الحنطة {فتكونا من الظالمين}.
quran:7:20

But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal."  

Then Satan, Iblīs, whispered to them that he might manifest, reveal, to them that which was hidden (wūriya: based on ˹the verbal form˺ fū‘ila and ˹derives˺ from ˹the infinitive˺ al-muwārā) to them of their shameful parts. And he said, ‘Your Lord prohibited you from this tree only, in aversion, lest you become angels (malakayn may also be read malikayn) or become immortals’, in other words, that is the necessary consequence of eating from it, as ˹is stated˺ in another verse: Shall I guide you to the Tree of Immortality and a kingdom that does not waste away? ˹Q. 20:120˺.
القرآن:٧:٢٠

فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ سَوْآتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَاكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ  

{فوسوس لهما الشيطان} إبليس {ليبدي} يظهر {لهما ما ووري} فوعل من الموارة {عنهما من سوآتهما وقال ما نهاكما ربُّكما عن هذه الشجرة إلا} كراهة {أن تكونا مَلَكَيْنِ} وقرئ بكسر اللام {أو تكونا من الخالدين} أي وذلك لازم عن الأكل منها في آية أخرى (هل أدلك على شجرة الخلد ومُلك لا يبلى).
quran:7:21

And he swore ˹by Allah˺ to them, "Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors."  

And he swore to both of them, that is, he swore to both of them by God, ‘Truly, I am a sincere adviser to you’, in this matter.
القرآن:٧:٢١

وَقَاسَمَهُمَا إِنِّي لَكُمَا لَمِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ  

{وقاسمهما} أي أقسم لهما بالله {إني لكما لمن الناصحين} في ذلك.
quran:7:22

So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?"  

Thus did he lead them on, ˹thus˺ did he debase them in their status, by delusion, on his part; and when they tasted of the tree, that is, ˹when˺ they ate of it, their shameful parts were manifested to them, that is, the front ˹private part˺ of each was revealed to the other, as well as their behinds — each of these parts is called saw’a, ‘shameful’, because its exposure ‘shames’ (yasū’u) that person — and they began to piece together, they began to stick, onto themselves some of the leaves of the Garden, to cover themselves up therewith. And their Lord called them: ‘Did I not prohibit you from this tree, and say to you, “Verily Satan is a manifest enemy to you”?’, one whose enmity is evident? (the interrogative is meant as an affirmative).
القرآن:٧:٢٢

فَدَلَّاهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ ۚ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا الشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْآتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِنْ وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ ۖ وَنَادَاهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَنْ تِلْكُمَا الشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُلْ لَكُمَا إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ  

{فدلاهما} حطهما عن منزلتهما {بغرور} منه {فلما ذاقا الشجرة} أي أكلا منها {بدت لهما سوآتهما} أي ظهر لكل منهما قبله وقبل الآخر ودبره وسمي كل منها سوأة لأن انكشافه يسوء صاحبه {وطفقا يخصفان} أخذ يلزقان {عليهما من ورق الجنة} ليستترا به {وناداهما ربهما ألم أنهكما عن تلكما الشجرة وأقل لكما إن الشيطان لكما عدو مبين} بيِّن العداوة والاستفهام للتقرير.
quran:7:23

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."  

They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, by our act of disobedience, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall surely be among the lost’.
القرآن:٧:٢٣

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ  

{قالا ربَّنا ظلمنا أنفسنا} بمعصيتنا {وإن لم تغفر لنا وترحمنا لنكونن من الخاسرين}.
quran:7:24

˹Allah˺ said, "Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time."  

Said He, ‘Go down, that is, Adam and Eve, with all those you comprise of your seed, each of you, each seed, an enemy to the other, on account of the wrong each does to the another. There will be for you on earth an abode, a place of settlement, and enjoyment for a while’, ˹until˺ your terms ˹of life˺ are fulfilled.
القرآن:٧:٢٤

قَالَ اهْبِطُوا بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَاعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ  

{قال اهبطوا} أي آدم وحواء بما اشتملتما عليه من ذريتكما {بعضكم} بعض الذرية {لبعض عدوٌ} من ظلم بعضهم بعضا {ولكم في الأرض} مستقر} أي مكان استقرار {ومتاع} تمتع {إلى حين} تنقضي فيه آجالكم.
quran:7:25

He said, "Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth."  

Said He, ‘There, that is, ˹on˺ earth, you shall live, and there you shall die, and from there you shall be brought forth’, through the Resurrection (read active takhrujūn, ‘you shall come forth’, or passive tukhrajūn, ‘you shall be brought forth’).
القرآن:٧:٢٥

قَالَ فِيهَا تَحْيَوْنَ وَفِيهَا تَمُوتُونَ وَمِنْهَا تُخْرَجُونَ  

{قال فيها} أي الأرض {تحيون وفيها تموتون ومنها تخرجون} بالبعث، وبالباء للفاعل والمفعول.
