Once, while we were sitting in the company of Prophet, a dead man was brought. The Prophet ﷺ was requested to lead the funeral prayer for the deceased. He said, "Is he in debt?" The people replied in the negative. He said, "Has he left any wealth?" They said, "No." So, he led his funeral prayer. Another dead man was brought and the people said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Lead his funeral prayer." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Is he in debt?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Has he left any wealth?" They said, ''Three Dinars." So, he led the prayer. Then a third dead man was brought and the people said (to the Prophet ﷺ ), Please lead his funeral prayer." He said, "Has he left any wealth?" They said, "No." He asked, "Is he in debt?" They said, ("Yes! He has to pay) three Diners.', He (refused to pray and) said, "Then pray for your (dead) companion." Abu Qatada said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Lead his funeral prayer, and I will pay his debt." So, he led the prayer.

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذْ أُتِيَ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَقَالُوا صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا قَالُوا لاَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ قِيلَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا قَالُوا ثَلاَثَةَ دَنَانِيرَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِالثَّالِثَةِ فَقَالُوا صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ قَالُوا ثَلاَثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَعَلَىَّ دَيْنُهُ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

A dead person was brought to the Prophet ﷺ so that he might lead the funeral prayer for him. He asked, "Is he in debt?" When the people replied in the negative, he led the funeral prayer. Another dead person was brought and he asked, "Is he in debt?" They said, "Yes." He (refused to lead the prayer and) said, "Lead the prayer of your friend." Abu Qatada said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I undertake to pay his debt." Messenger of Allah ﷺ then led his funeral prayer.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِجَنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دَيْنٍ قَالُوا لاَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ مَنْ دَيْنٍ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ عَلَىَّ دَيْنُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

Whenever a dead man in debt was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ he would ask, "Has he left anything to repay his debt?" If he was informed that he had left something to repay his debts, he would offer his funeral prayer, otherwise he would tell the Muslims to offer their friend's funeral prayer. When Allah made the Prophet ﷺ wealthy through conquests, he said, "I am more rightful than other believers to be the guardian of the believers, so if a Muslim dies while in debt, I am responsible for the repayment of his debt, and whoever leaves wealth (after his death) it will belong to his heirs. "

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِالرَّجُلِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ فَيَسْأَلُ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ فَضْلاً فَإِنْ حُدِّثَ أَنَّهُ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ وَفَاءً صَلَّى وَإِلاَّ قَالَ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الْفُتُوحَ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَتَرَكَ دَيْنًا فَعَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَلِوَرَثَتِهِ

A dead man in debt used to be brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ who would ask, "Has he left anything to re pay his debts?" If he was informed that he had left something to cover his debts the Prophet ﷺ would offer the funeral prayer for him; otherwise he would say to the Muslims present there), "Offer the funeral prayer for your friend:"but when Allah helped the Prophet ﷺ to gain victory (on his expeditions), he said, "I am closer to the Believers than themselves, so. if one of the Believers dies in debt, I will repay it, but if he leaves wealth, it will be for his heirs.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِالرَّجُلِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ فَيَسْأَلُ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ فَضْلاً فَإِنْ حُدِّثَ أَنَّهُ تَرَكَ وَفَاءً صَلَّى وَإِلاَّ قَالَ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الْفُتُوحَ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَتَرَكَ دَيْنًا فَعَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَلِوَرَثَتِهِ

You observe prayer for your companion. But when Allah opened the gateways of victory for him, he said: I am nearer to the believers than themselves, so if anyone dies leaving a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and if anyone leaves a property, it goes to his heirs.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِالرَّجُلِ الْمَيِّتِ عَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ فَيَسْأَلُ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ مِنْ قَضَاءٍ فَإِنْ حُدِّثَ أَنَّهُ تَرَكَ وَفَاءً صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِلاَّ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الْفُتُوحَ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَعَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَهُوَ لِوَرَثَتِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not say funeral prayer over a person who died while the debt was due from him. A dead Muslim was brought to him and he asked: Is there any debt due from him? They (the people) said: Yes, two dirhams. He said: Pray yourselves over your companion. Then AbuQatadah al-Ansari said: I shall pay them, Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prayed over him. When Allah granted conquests to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: I am nearer to every believer than himself, so if anyone (dies and) leaves a debt, I shall be responsible for paying it; and if anyone leaves property, it goes to his heirs.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لاَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَجُلٍ مَاتَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَأُتِيَ بِمَيِّتٍ فَقَالَ أَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ قَالُوا نَعَمْ دِينَارَانِ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ هُمَا عَلَىَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ فَمَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنًا فَعَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَلِوَرَثَتِهِ

The Prophet was brought a (deceased) man to perform Salat over. So the Prophet said: "Pray for your companion; for indeed he had a debt upon him." Abu Qatadah said: "It shall be upon me." So the Messenger of Allah said: "To pay it off?" (He said: "To pay it off.") So he performed the prayer for him.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِرَجُلٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُوَ عَلَىَّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالْوَفَاءِ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ وَسَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ وَأَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ

"A deceased man would be brought to the Messenger of Allah while a debt was due upon him. So he would say: 'Has he left anything to pay off his debt?' If he was told that he had left something to pay it then he would pray (the funeral prayer) for him. Otherwise he would tell the Muslims: 'Pray for your companion.' So when Allah granted him the victories, he stood and said: 'I am more worthy in the case of the believers than they themselves are. So whoever among the believers dies and leaves a debt behind, then it is up to me to fulfill it. And whoever leaves wealth behind, then it is for his heirs.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِالرَّجُلِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ فَيَقُولُ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ مِنْ قَضَاءٍ فَإِنْ حُدِّثَ أَنَّهُ تَرَكَ وَفَاءً صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِلاَّ قَالَ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الْفُتُوحَ قَامَ فَقَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَتَرَكَ دَيْنًا عَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَهُوَ لِوَرَثَتِهِ

a man was brought to the Prophet for him to offer the funeral prayer, and he said: "Pray for your companion, for he owes a debt." Abu Qatadah said: " I will pay it." The Prophet said: "In full?" He said: "In full." So he prayed for him

"The Prophet would not pray for a man who owed a debt. A deceased person was brought to him and he said: 'Does he owe any debt?' They said: 'Yes, he owes two Dinars.' He said: 'Pray for your companion.' Abu Qatadah said: 'I will pay them, O Messenger of Alllah, So he prayed for him. Then, when Allah made His Messenger rich though conquest, he said: ' I am closer to each believer than his own self. Whoever leaves behind a debt, I will pay it, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs."

if a believer died with debts outstanding, the Messenger of Allah would ask whether he had left behind anything to pay off his debts. If they said yes, he would pray for him, but if they said no, he would say: "Pray for your companion." Then, when Allah made His Messenger rich through conquest, he said: "I am closer to the believers than their own selves. Whoever dies and leaves behind a debt, I will pay it, and whoever leavers behind wealth, it is for his heirs."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ الْمُؤْمِنُ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ سَأَلَ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ مِنْ قَضَاءٍ فَإِنْ قَالُوا نَعَمْ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِنْ قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ ﷻ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَعَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَهُوَ لِوَرَثَتِهِ

"Your companion owes a debt. " Abu Qutdah said: "I will guarantee it for him. "The prophet said: "In full?" He said: "In full." (Sahah)

أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ أُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ دَيْنًا فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ أَنَا أَتَكَفَّلُ بِهِ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ

“I heard 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrate from his father that a corpse was brought to the Prophet ﷺ for him to offer the funeral prayer, and he said: 'Pray for your companion, for he owes a debt.' Abu Qatadah said: 'I will stand surely for him?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'In full?' He said: 'In full.” And the debt he owed was eighteen or nineteen Dirham.”

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ أَنَا أَتَكَفَّلُ بِهِ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِالْوَفَاءِ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ وَكَانَ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ أَوْ تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا

if a believer died at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he had debts, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask: “Did he leave anything with which to off his debt?” If they said yes, then he would offer the funeral prayer for him, but if they said no, then he would say: “Pray for your companion.” When Allah granted his Prophet ﷺ the conquests, he said: “I am nearer to the believers than their own selves. Whoever dies owing a debt, I will pay it off for him, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it will be for his heirs.”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ الْمُؤْمِنُ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ فَيَسْأَلُ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ مِنْ قَضَاءٍ فَإِنْ قَالُوا نَعَمْ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِنْ قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ الْفُتُوحَ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَعَلَىَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَهُوَ لِوَرَثَتِهِ

[AI] I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral passed by. He asked, "Did the deceased leave behind any debt?" They said, "No." He asked, "Did he leave behind anything?" They said, "No." He then performed the funeral prayer for the deceased. Then another funeral passed by and he asked the same questions, to which they replied the same answers. He then performed the funeral prayer for the second deceased. After that, a third funeral passed by and he asked the same questions. They answered, "Yes, three dinars." He then gestured with his fingers three times. Finally, they brought the third deceased and he asked the same questions. They answered, "Yes." He asked, "Did he leave behind anything?" They said, "No." He said, "Pray upon your companion." Then, a man from the Ansar said, "He had a debt on me, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ then performed the funeral prayer for him.

كُنْتُ جَالِسًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ دَيْنٍ؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِأُخْرَى فَقَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ دَيْنٍ؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ ثَلَاثَةَ دَنَانِيرَ قَالَ فَقَالَ بِأَصَابِعِهِ ثَلَاثَ كَيَّاتٍ قَالَ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِالثَّالِثَةِ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ دَيْنٍ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ عَلَيَّ دَيْنُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

[AI] I was with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral came and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray upon him." He said, "Did he leave anything?" They said, "No." He asked, "Did he leave any debts?" They said, "No." So, he prayed for him. Then, another funeral came after that, and he asked, "Did he leave any debts?" They said, "No." He asked, "Did he leave anything?" They said, "Three dinars." He said, "Three kiyats." Then, the third funeral came, and he asked, "Did he leave any debts?" They said, "Yes." He asked, "Did he leave anything?" They said, "No." He said, "Pray upon your companion." Then, a man from the Ansar called Abu Qatadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, his debt is upon me." So, he prayed upon him.

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ came to a funeral to pray over it. He asked, "Does he have any debts?" They replied, "Yes, two dinars." He asked, "Did he leave anything to repay them?" They said, "No." He said, "Then pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "They are on me, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ prayed over him.

أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ أَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ دِينَارَانِ قَالَ أَتَرَكَ لَهُمَا وَفَاءً؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ 10 قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was visited by a man from the Ansar so that the Prophet may pray for him. The Prophet said, "Pray for your companion, as he has a debt." Abu Qatadah said, "I will pay it off, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet said, "With fulfilling it?" Abu Qatadah said, "With fulfilling it." So, the Prophet prayed for him, and his debt was only eighteen or nineteen dirhams.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِرَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِفَقَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ؛ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُوَ عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ؟ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّمَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ أَوْ تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا

[AI] The messenger of Allah ﷺ came with a funeral and performed prayer upon it. He asked, "Does he have any debt?" They replied, "Yes, two dinars." He asked, "Did he leave anything behind to pay off the debt?" They replied, "No." He said, "Then pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "They are upon me, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ prayed upon him.

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ يُصَلِّي عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ دِينَارَانِ فَقَالَ تَرَكَ لَهُمَا وَفَاءً؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَصَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ

[AI] A man from among us passed away, so we went to the Prophet ﷺ to offer the prayer for him. The Prophet asked, "Did he leave anything behind?" They replied, "No, by Allah, he did not leave anything behind." The Prophet then asked, "Did he have any debts?" They replied, "Yes, he owed eighteen dirhams." The Prophet then asked, "Did he leave anything to fulfill his debts?" They replied, "No, by Allah, he did not leave anything to fulfill his debts." The Prophet said, "Then you pray for him." Abu Qatada asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what if I settle his debts, should I pray for him?" The Prophet answered, "If you settle his debts, then you may pray for him." Abu Qatada settled the man's debts and asked the Prophet, "Have I fulfilled what was upon him?" The Prophet replied, "Yes." Then he called for the man and offered the prayer for him.

تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالُوا لَا وَاللهِ مَا تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دَيْنٍ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ لَهَا قَضَاءً؟ قَالُوا لَا وَاللهِ مَا تَرَكَ لَهَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَصَلُّوا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قَضَيْتُ عَنْهُ أَتُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ إِنْ قَضَيْتَ عَنْهُ بِالْوَفَاءِ صَلَّيْتُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ فَقَضَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ أَوْفَيْتَ مَا عَلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺفَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a funeral for him to pray over it and he said, "Does he have any debts?" They replied, "He has two dinars of debt." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said to me, "O Messenger of Allah, those debts are upon me." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and prayed for him.

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا وَقَالَ «عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ » قَالُوا عَلَيْهِ دِينَارَانِ فَقَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ إِلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هُمَا عَلَيَّ فَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

“I heard 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrate from his father that a corpse was brought to the Prophet ﷺ for him to offer the funeral prayer, and he said: 'Pray for your companion, for he owes a debt.' Abu Qatadah said: 'I will stand surely for him?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'In full?' He said: 'In full.” And the debt he owed was eighteen or nineteen Dirham.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2407)

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا» فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ أَنَا أَكْفُلُ بِهِ قَالَ «بِالْوَفَاءِ؟ » قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ عَلَيْهِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ أَوْ سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا

if a believer died at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he had debts, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask: “Did he leave anything with which to off his debt?” If they said yes, then he would offer the funeral prayer for him, but if they said no, then he would say: “Pray for your companion.” When Allah granted his Prophet ﷺ the conquests, he said: “I am nearer to the believers than their own selves. Whoever dies owing a debt, I will pay it off for him, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it will be for his heirs.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2415)

كَانَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا مَاتَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ سَأَلَ «هَلْ لَهُ وَفَاءٌ؟ » فَإِذَا قِيلَ نَعَمْ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِذَا قِيلَ كَلَّا قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَلَمَّا فَتْحَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ الْفُتُوحَ قَالَ «أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ مَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنًا فَعَلَيَّ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالًا فَلِلْوَارِثِ»

[AI] I was with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral procession passed by. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray for him." He asked, "Did he leave any debt behind?" They said, "No." He then asked, "Did he leave any wealth?" They said, "Three dinars." He said, "Give three handfuls of charity from it." Then, another funeral procession passed by and they said, "O Prophet of Allah, pray for him." He asked, "Did he leave any debt behind?" They said, "Yes." He then asked, "Did he leave any wealth?" They said, "No." A man from the Ansar named Abu Qatadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I will take care of his debt." The Prophet ﷺ then prayed for him.

كُنْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالُوا صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ» قَالُوا ثَلَاثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ قَالَ «ثَلَاثُ كَيَّاتٍ» ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِالثَّانِيَةِ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ دَيْنٍ» قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ» قَالُوا لَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلَيَّ دَيْنُهُ قَالَ «فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ»

You observe prayer for your companion. But when Allah opened the gateways of victory for him, he said: I am nearer to the believers than themselves, so if anyone dies leaving a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and if anyone leaves a property, it goes to his heirs. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِالرَّجُلِ الْمَيِّتِ عَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ فَيَسْأَلُ هَلْ تَرَكَ لِدَيْنِهِ وَفَاءً فَإِنْ حُدِّثَ أَنَّهُ تَرَكَ وَفَاءً صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلَا عَلَيْهِ الْفُتُوحَ قَالَ «أَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَمَنْ تُوُفِّيَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَعَلَيَّ قَضَاؤُهُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالًا فَهُوَ لِوَرَثَتِهِ»

[AI] We were with the Prophet ﷺ when the funeral of a man from the Ansar was brought. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Did he leave any debt?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, two dinars." He said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "They are upon me, O Messenger of Allah." So he prayed for him, and then another funeral was brought. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Does he have any debt?" They said, "No." He said, "Did he leave any wealth?" They said, "Two dinars." He said, "Give it in charity." And he prayed for him.

كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ «تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دِينَارَيْنِ قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلِيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِأُخْرَى فَقَالَ «عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَرَكَ كَنْزًا؟» قَالُوا دِينَارَيْنِ قَالَ «كَيَّتَانِ» وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated that Hatim narrated from Yazid who narrated from Salamah that he said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a funeral passed by. It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, should we attend to it?" He said, "Did he leave any debt?" They said, "No." He said, "Does he owe anything?" They said, "No." So he prayed the funeral prayer. Then, while I was standing, another funeral was brought. He asked, "Does he owe anything?" They said, "No." He said, "Did he leave anything?" They said, "Yes, three dinars." He said, "Three Qiyas (measuring practitioners) then." Then we stayed as long as Allah wished, and another funeral was brought. He asked, "Did he leave anything?" They said, "No." He asked, "Does he owe anything?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Pray on your companion." Abu Qatadah said: "O Messenger of Allah, what was his debt?" So he prayed on him.

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا حَاتِمٌ عَنْ يَزِيدَ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ قَاعِدًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلِّ عَلَى هَذِهِ؟ قَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟» قِيلَ لَا قَالَ «هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ» قَالُوا لَا فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا قَائِمٌ أُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ «هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ ثَلَاثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ قَالَ «ثَلَاثُ كَيَّاتٍ» ثُمَّ لَبِثْنَا مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دَيْنُهُ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was invited to the funeral of a man from the Ansar. When the body was placed on the bier, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ came forward to pray over him. Then he turned and asked, "Does your companion owe any debt?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, two dinars." He said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "Indeed, we owe him, O Prophet of Allah." So he prayed for him.

دُعِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى جِنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَلَمَّا وُضِعَ السَّرِيرُ تَقَدَّمَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ لِيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ فَقَالَ «عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دِينَارَيْنِ فَقَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ إِنَّا نَدِينُهُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

a man was brought to the Prophet for him to offer the funeral prayer, and he said: "Pray for your companion, for he owes a debt." Abu Qatadah said: " I will pay it." The Prophet said: "In full?" He said: "In full." So he prayed for him (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1960)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِرَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا» قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُوَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِالْوَفَاءِ قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

"A Janazah was brought to the Prophet and they said: " O Prophet of Allah, pray for him.' He said: "Did he leave any debt behind?' They said: "Yes.' He said 'Did he leave anything?' They said: No. He said; 'Pray fro your companion.' A man among the Ansar who was called Abu Qatadah said: 'Pray for him and I will pay off his debt.' So he prayed for him." أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دَيْنٍ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ «هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ عَلَيَّ دَيْنُهُ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

"The Prophet would not pray for a man who owed a debt. A deceased person was brought to him and he said: 'Does he owe any debt?' They said: 'Yes, he owes two Dinars.' He said: 'Pray for your companion.' Abu Qatadah said: 'I will pay them, O Messenger of Alllah, So he prayed for him. Then, when Allah made His Messenger rich though conquest, he said: ' I am closer to each believer than his own self. Whoever leaves behind a debt, I will pay it, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1962)

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَا يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَجُلٍ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَأُتِيَ بِمَيِّتٍ فَسَأَلَ «هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ دِينَارَانِ قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أَنَا أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ مَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنًا فَعَلَيَّ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالًا فَهُوَ لِوَرَثَتِهِ»

"Your companion owes a debt. " Abu Qutdah said: "I will guarantee it for him. "The prophet said: "In full?" He said: "In full." (Sahah) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4692)

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ؛ لَيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ «عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ دِينًا» فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ أَنَا أَكْفُلُ بِهِ قَالَ «بِالْوَفَاءِ؟» قَالَ بِالْوَفَاءِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was brought a funeral of a man from the Ansar, to pray upon him. He asked, "Does he have any debt?" They replied, "No." He asked, "Did he leave anything behind?" They said, "Yes." So he prayed upon him and another funeral was brought, and he asked again, "Does he have any debt?" They replied, "Yes." He asked, "Did he leave anything behind?" They said, "Yes." So he prayed upon him as well. Then another funeral was brought, and he asked again, "Does he have any debt?" They replied, "Yes." He asked, "Did he leave anything behind?" They said, "No." He said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "It is for me, O Messenger of Allah!" So he prayed upon him, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ فَقَالُوا لَا قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ ؓ هُوَ عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

So, the Prophet ﷺ prayed for him accordingly as narrated by Yahya bin Sa'id and in another narration by Makkib bin Ibrahim in the other funeral procession they said, "Three dinars." So, he prayed for her.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not say funeral prayer over a person who died while the debt was due from him. A dead Muslim was brought to him and he asked: Is there any debt due from him? They (the people) said: Yes, two dirhams. He said: Pray yourselves over your companion. Then AbuQatadah al-Ansari said: I shall pay them, Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prayed over him. When Allah granted conquests to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: I am nearer to every believer than himself, so if anyone (dies and) leaves a debt, I shall be responsible for paying it; and if anyone leaves property, it goes to his heirs. Whenever a dead man in debt was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ he would ask, "Has he left anything to repay his debt?" If he was informed that he had left something to repay his debts, he would offer his funeral prayer, otherwise he would tell the Muslims to offer their friend's funeral prayer. When Allah made the Prophet ﷺ wealthy through conquests, he said, "I am more rightful than other believers to be the guardian of the believers, so if a Muslim dies while in debt, I am responsible for the repayment of his debt, and whoever leaves wealth (after his death) it will belong to his heirs. " عَن جَابِرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ لاَ يُصَلِّى عَلَى رَجُلٍ عَلَيْه دَيْنٌ، فَأُتِى بِميِّتٍ فَسَأَلَ: هَل عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، دِينَارَانِ، قَالَ: فَصَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ، قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلَىَّ يَارَسُولَ الله، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْه، فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ الله عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ، مَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنَا فَعَلَىَّ، وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالًا فَلِورَثَتِهِ ".

"عَنْ أَبِى قَتَادَةَ قَالَ أُتِى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ بِجِنازة رَجُل مِن قَوْمِى يُصَلِى عَلَيْهَا، فَقَالَ عَلى صَاحبكَ دَيْن؟ فَالُوا نَعَمْ، عَليه بضعة عَشْرَ دِرْهمًا، قَالَ فَصلوا عَلى صَاحِبكُم، قَلْت: هِىَ علىَّ يَا رَسُولَ الله، فَصَلَّى عَلَيه".
