bukhari:2295 – Abū ʿĀṣim > Yazīd b. Abū ʿUbayd > Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ

A dead person was brought to the Prophet ﷺ so that he might lead the funeral prayer for him. He asked, "Is he in debt?" When the people replied in the negative, he led the funeral prayer. Another dead person was brought and he asked, "Is he in debt?" They said, "Yes." He (refused to lead the prayer and) said, "Lead the prayer of your friend." Abu Qatada said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I undertake to pay his debt." Messenger of Allah ﷺ then led his funeral prayer.  

البخاري:٢٢٩٥ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ ؓ

"A Janazah was brought to the Prophet and they said: " O Prophet of Allah, pray for him.' He said: "Did he leave any debt behind?' They said: "Yes.' He said 'Did he leave anything?' They said: No. He said; 'Pray fro your companion.' A man among the Ansar who was called Abu Qatadah said: 'Pray for him and I will pay off his debt.' So he prayed for him."

They said, "No." He said, "Then pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "They are on me, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ prayed over him.  

أحمد:٢٢٥٤٣ – حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ أَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ دِينَارَانِ قَالَ أَتَرَكَ لَهُمَا وَفَاءً؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ 10 قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ

He asked, "Did he leave anything behind to pay off the debt?" They replied, "No." He said, "Then pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "They are upon me, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ prayed upon him.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a funeral for him to pray over it and he said, "Does he have any debts?" They replied, "He has two dinars of debt." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said to me, "O Messenger of Allah, those debts are upon me." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and prayed for him.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was invited to the funeral of a man from the Ansar. When the body was placed on the bier, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ came forward to pray over him. Then he turned and asked, "Does your companion owe any debt?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, two dinars." He said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "Indeed, we owe him, O Prophet of Allah." So he prayed for him.  

الطبراني:٢٠٩٣٢ – حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُهَاجِرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنَا أَسْمَاءُ بِنْتُ يَزِيدَ قَالَتْ

دُعِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى جِنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَلَمَّا وُضِعَ السَّرِيرُ تَقَدَّمَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ لِيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ فَقَالَ «عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دِينَارَيْنِ فَقَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ إِنَّا نَدِينُهُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ when the funeral of a man from the Ansar was brought. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Did he leave any debt?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, two dinars." He said, "Pray for your companion." Abu Qatadah said, "They are upon me, O Messenger of Allah." So he prayed for him, and then another funeral was brought. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Does he have any debt?" They said, "No." He said, "Did he leave any wealth?" They said, "Two dinars." He said, "Give it in charity." And he prayed for him.  

الطبراني:٦٢٥٨ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ شَبِيبٍ الْعَسَّالُ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَجَلِيُّ ثنا أَبُو مَرْيَمَ عَبْدُ الْغَفَّارِ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ثنا إِيَاسُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ «تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دِينَارَيْنِ قَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ هُمَا عَلِيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِأُخْرَى فَقَالَ «عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَرَكَ كَنْزًا؟» قَالُوا دِينَارَيْنِ قَالَ «كَيَّتَانِ» وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ
