Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) said, "Whoever took a false oath in order to grab somebody's property will meet Allah while Allah will be angry with him." Allah revealed the following verse to confirm that:--"Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant And their oaths...a painful torment." (3.77) Al-Ash'ath bin Qais came to us and asked as to what Abu Abdur-Rehman (i.e. Ibn Mas'ud) was telling you." We related the story to him. On that he said, "He has told the truth. This verse was revealed about me. I had some dispute with another man regarding a well and we took the case before Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to me), "Produce two witnesses (to support your claim); otherwise the defendant has the right to take an oath (to refute your claim).' I said, 'The defendant would not mind to take a false oath." Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'Whoever took a false oath in order to grab someone else's property will meet Allah, Allah will be angry with him.' Allah then revealed what Confirmed it." Al-Ash'ath then recited the following Verse:--"Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant, And their oaths . . . (to) . . . they shall have a painful torment!' The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive somebody of his property will meet Allah while He will be angry with him." Allah revealed: 'Verily those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant, and their oaths.' ........(3.77) Al-Ashath came (to the place where ʿAbdullah was narrating) and said, "What has Abu ʿAbdur- Rahman (i.e. ʿAbdullah) been telling you? This verse was revealed concerning me. I had a well in the land of a cousin of mine. The Prophet ﷺ asked me to bring witnesses (to confirm my claim). I said, 'I don't have witnesses.' He said, 'Let the defendant take an oath then.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will take a (false) oath immediately.' Then the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the above narration and Allah revealed the verse to confirm what he had said." (See Hadith No. 692)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a false oath so as to take the property of a Muslim (illegally) will meet Allah while He will be angry with him." Al-Ash'ath said: By Allah, that saying concerned me. I had common land with a Jew, and the Jew later on denied my ownership, so I took him to the Prophet who asked me whether I had a proof of my ownership. When I replied in the negative, the Prophet asked the Jew to take an oath. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will take an oath and deprive me of my property." So, Allah revealed the following verse: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths." (3.77)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who swears an oath in which he tells a lie to take the property of a Muslim by unfair means, will meet Allah while He is angry with him. Al-Ash'ath said: I swear by Allah, he said this about me. There was some land between me and a Jew, but he denied it to me; so I presented him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ asked me: Have you any evidence? I replied: No. He said to the Jew: Take an oath. I said: Messenger of Allah, now he will take an oath and take my property. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verse, "As for those who sell the faith they owe to Allah and their own plighted word for a small price, they shall have no portion in the hereafter."

tirmidhi:1269Hannād > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Shaqīq b. Salamah > ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive a Muslim of his wealth, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Al-Ash'ath bin Qais said: "It is about me, by Allah! There was a dispute about some land between myself and a man from the Jews who denied my ownership of it, so I took him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Do you have any proof ?' I said: 'No'. So he said to Jew: 'Take an oath.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If he takes an oath then my property will be gone!' So Allah, Most High revealed: Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths.. until the end of the Ayah."

[Abu 'Eisa said:] There are narrations on this topic from Wa'il bin Hujr, Abu Musa, Abu Umamah bin Tha'labah Al-Ansari, and 'Imran bin Husain. The Hadith of Ibn Mas'ud is a Hasan Sahih Hadith.

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive a Muslim of his property, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." So Al-Ash'ath bin Qais said: "By Allah! This was about me. There was a dispute between myself and a Jewish man who denied my right, and I complained against him to the Prophet ﷺ. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Do you have any proof?' I said: 'No.' So he said to the Jew: 'Take an oath.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If he takes an oath then I will lose my property.' So Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed: Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths... until the end of the Ayah. (3:77)"

And indeed, the truth of his claim is in the Quran, 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their own oaths for a small price' [Al-Imran 3:77] until the end of the verse. Al-Aswad recited it and said, 'I was informed that this verse was revealed about a man who claimed that he had grazing rights to a specific pasture. So we disputed and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He asked for witnesses or an oath, so I said, 'Indeed, if he takes an oath, he will be a sinful liar.' [Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath on a matter in which he is lying, in order to unlawfully take someone's property, then he has met Allah while He is angry with him." The confirmation of this was revealed in the Qur'an in the verse {Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah}. Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays passed by them while they were discussing this hadith in the mosque and he asked, "What does Ibn Umm 'Abd say?" They informed him, so he said, "He spoke the truth, indeed this verse was revealed concerning me and my companion in a well that I claimed and none of us had any proof, so he swore an oath on it. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned this at that time."

[Machine] In this verse, it was revealed to me that I had a piece of land in the possession of my paternal uncle. So, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Do you want me to arbitrate or shall I uphold his oath?" I said, "If he has taken an oath, then you should arbitrate, O Messenger of Allah." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes an oath, while he is still a sinner and uses it to wrongfully take the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." So, Allah revealed the verse: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price..." until the end of the verse.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath to take something unlawfully while lying, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." This is confirmed in the Book of Allah (Quran), "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their own oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter" [Surah Al-Imran 77]. Ash'ath ibn Qays came and asked, "What is Abu Abdur Rahman talking to you about?" We said, "He said such and such." Ash'ath said, "By Allah, he is telling the truth. Allah revealed a verse about me and another person with whom I had a dispute." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Are you his witness or do you have any oath?" I said, "In that case, he will swear an oath." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath to take something unlawfully while lying, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Then Allah revealed this verse. Abu Abdur Rahman was followed by Mansur ibn Al-Mu'tamir.

[Machine] There was a dispute between me and a group, so we brought our case to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, "Provide witnesses or take an oath." I said, "Then he will take an oath and not care." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes an oath to acquire what is rightfully someone else's and he is lying, will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Then Allah, the Most High, revealed the confirmation of this, "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price" [Quran 3:77].

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath to take something unlawfully, and then meets Allah while He is angry with him and his oath is contradicted by the Book of Allah, 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - those will have no share in the Hereafter' [Quran 3:77]." Then Ash'ath ibn Qays came and asked, "What is Abu Abdur Rahman telling you?" We replied, "So and so." He said, "By Allah, this verse was revealed about me and another person. We had a dispute and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Bring your witnesses or take an oath.' I said, 'Then he will swear.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever swears an oath to take something unlawfully, and he is lying in it, when he meets Allah, He will be Angry with him.'" Then Allah revealed the verse.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes an oath in order to withhold someone's money, while Allah's anger is upon him, and his sincerity is mentioned in the Book of Allah the Most High: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - those will have no portion in the Hereafter.' " Then Ash'ath ibn Qays came and said, "What is Abu Abdur-Rahman telling you?" We said such and such. He said, "By Allah, it was revealed about me and Fulan bin Fulan. There was a dispute between me and him, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Do you have witnesses or an oath?' I said, 'Then he will take an oath.' He said, 'Whoever takes an oath in order to withhold someone's money, while he is lying, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him.' So Allah revealed this verse."

[Machine] Whoever swears an oath and is dishonest in it, seeking by it wealth while he is sinful therein, he will meet Allah while he is angry with him. And the confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - they will have no share in the Hereafter" [Al-Imran 3:77]. Thumamah ibn Qays then came to us and said, "What is Abu Abdur Rahman talking to you about?" So we informed him of what he said. Thumamah said, "He has told the truth. A similar incident happened to me. I had a dispute with a man over a well, so we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, 'Do you have any witnesses or evidence?' I replied, 'No, but I am willing to swear an oath.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever swears an oath and is dishonest in it, seeking by it wealth while he is sinful therein, he will meet Allah while he is angry with him.' Then Allah (ﷻ) revealed the confirmation of that and recited this verse: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - they will have no share in the Hereafter' [Al-Imran 3:77]. This is the wording of the narration of Ishaq.
