Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a false oath so as to take the property of a Muslim (illegally) will meet Allah while He will be angry with him." Al-Ash'ath said: By Allah, that saying concerned me. I had common land with a Jew, and the Jew later on denied my ownership, so I took him to the Prophet who asked me whether I had a proof of my ownership. When I replied in the negative, the Prophet asked the Jew to take an oath. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will take an oath and deprive me of my property." So, Allah revealed the following verse: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths." (3.77)  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ وَهْوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللَّهَ وَهْوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ قَالَ فَقَالَ الأَشْعَثُ فِيَّ وَاللَّهِ كَانَ ذَلِكَ كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ أَرْضٌ فَجَحَدَنِي فَقَدَّمْتُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَلَكَ بَيِّنَةٌ قُلْتُ لاَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِلْيَهُودِيِّ احْلِفْ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِذًا يَحْلِفَ وَيَذْهَبَ بِمَالِي فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلاً} إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ  

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If somebody takes a false oath in order to get the property of a Muslim (unjustly) by that oath, then Allah will be angry with him when he will meet Him." Al-Ash'ath informed me, "By Allah! This was said regarding me. There was a dispute about a piece of land between me and a man from the Jews who denied my right. I took him to the Prophet. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, 'Do you have an evidence?' I replied in the negative. He said to the Jew, 'Take an oath.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will surely take an oath and take my property unjustly." So, Allah revealed: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths . . . " (3.77)

Al-Ash'ath said: I swear by Allah, he said this about me. There was some land between me and a Jew, but he denied it to me; so I presented him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ asked me: Have you any evidence? I replied: No. He said to the Jew: Take an oath. I said: Messenger of Allah, now he will take an oath and take my property. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verse, "As for those who sell the faith they owe to Allah and their own plighted word for a small price, they shall have no portion in the hereafter."

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive a Muslim of his wealth, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Al-Ash'ath bin Qais said: "It is about me, by Allah! There was a dispute about some land between myself and a man from the Jews who denied my ownership of it, so I took him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Do you have any proof ?' I said: 'No'. So he said to Jew: 'Take an oath.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If he takes an oath then my property will be gone!' So Allah, Most High revealed: Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths.. until the end of the Ayah."

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive a Muslim of his property, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." So Al-Ash'ath bin Qais said: "By Allah! This was about me. There was a dispute between myself and a Jewish man who denied my right, and I complained against him to the Prophet ﷺ. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Do you have any proof?' I said: 'No.' So he said to the Jew: 'Take an oath.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If he takes an oath then I will lose my property.' So Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed: Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths... until the end of the Ayah. (3:77)"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ هُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لِيَقْطَعَ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ» فَقَالَ الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِيَّ وَاللهِ كَانَ ذَلِكَ كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ أَرْضٌ فَجَحَدَنِي فَقَدَّمْتُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَلَكَ بَيِّنَةٌ؟» فَقُلْتُ لَا فَقَالَ لِلْيَهُودِيِّ «احْلِفْ» فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ فَيَذْهَبُ حَقِّي فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} [آل عمران 77] إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَاتَنِي مِنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ حَرْفٌ فِيمَا أَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَقِفُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا تَابَعَ أَبَا مُعَاوِيَةَ عَلَى قَوْلِهِ فَقَالَ لِلْيَهُودِيِّ احْلِفْ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to carry the stones for the Kaaba with him, and he had his garment on him. His uncle Al-Abbas said to him, "O son of my brother, if you take off your garment and place it on your shoulders instead of the stones." He said, "So he took it off and put it on his shoulders, and then he fell unconscious." He said, "So he was seen after that day naked. The words of their conversation are equal."  

رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَنْقُلُ مَعَهُمُ الْحِجَارَةَ لِلْكَعْبَةِ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ عَمُّهُ ؓ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي لَوْ حَلَلْتَ إِزَارَكَ فَجَعَلْتَهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيْكَ دُونَ الْحِجَارَةِ قَالَ فَحَلَّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيْهِ فَسَقَطَ مَغْشِيًّا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَمَا رُئِيَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ عُرْيَانًا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِهِمْ سَوَاءٌ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever swears an oath in order to unlawfully take the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him. The confirmation of this is in the book of Allah (swt): 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price...' [Al-Imran 3:77]". Until the end of the verse.

Al-Ash'ath bin Qays entered and said, "What has Abu 'Abdur-Rahman told you?" They said, "So and so." He said, "He spoke the truth. The verse was revealed concerning me and a man in Yemen who had a dispute. We presented the case to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he asked, 'Do you have any evidence?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Then take an oath.' So I swore an oath. He said, 'Whoever swears an oath in order to unlawfully take the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him.' So Allah (swt) revealed the verse: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price...' [Al-Imran 3:77]" until the end of the verse.  

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينِ صَبْرٍ لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ وَتَصْدِيقُ ذَلِكَ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ ﷻ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} [آل عمران 77] إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ فَدَخَلَ الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فَقَالَ مَا حَدَّثَكُمْ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ؟ قَالَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ صَدَقَ فِيَّ نَزَلَتْ كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ فِي أَرْضٍ بِالْيَمَنِ خُصُومَةٌ فَاخْتَصَمْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلْ لَكَ بَيِّنَةٌ ؟ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ فَيَمِينُهُ ؟ قُلْتُ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ قَالَ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينِ صَبْرٍ لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} [آل عمران 77] إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ  

ʿAbdullah bin Masud said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever takes an oath when asked to do so, in which he may deprive a Muslim of his property unlawfully, will meet Allah Who will be angry with him.' So Allah revealed in confirmation of this statement:--"Verily! Those who Purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter..." (3.77) Then entered Al-Ash'ath bin Qais and said, "What is Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman narrating to you?" We replied, 'So-and-so." Al-Ash'ath said, "This Verse was revealed in my connection. I had a well in the land of my cousin (and he denied my, possessing it). On that the Prophet ﷺ said to me, 'Either you bring forward a proof or he (i.e. your cousin) takes an oath (to confirm his claim)' I said, 'I am sure he would take a (false) oath, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'If somebody takes an oath when asked to do so through which he may deprive a Muslim of his property (unlawfully) and he is a liar in his oath, he will meet Allah Who will be angry with him.' قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ صَبْرٍ يَقْتَطِعُ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} [آل عمران 77] إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ فَدَخَلَ الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فَقَالَ مَا حَدَّثَكُمْ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ؟ قَالُوا كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ فِيَّ أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ كَانَتْ لِي بِئْرٌ فِي أَرْضِ ابْنِ عَمٍّ لِي فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ بَيِّنَتَكَ أَوْ يَمِينَهُ قُلْتُ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ عَلَيْهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ صَبْرٍ هُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ يَقْتَطِعُ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ  

[Machine] Whoever swears an oath and is dishonest in it, seeking by it wealth while he is sinful therein, he will meet Allah while he is angry with him. And the confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - they will have no share in the Hereafter" [Al-Imran 3:77]. Thumamah ibn Qays then came to us and said, "What is Abu Abdur Rahman talking to you about?" So we informed him of what he said. Thumamah said, "He has told the truth. A similar incident happened to me. I had a dispute with a man over a well, so we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, 'Do you have any witnesses or evidence?' I replied, 'No, but I am willing to swear an oath.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever swears an oath and is dishonest in it, seeking by it wealth while he is sinful therein, he will meet Allah while he is angry with him.' Then Allah (ﷻ) revealed the confirmation of that and recited this verse: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - they will have no share in the Hereafter' [Al-Imran 3:77]. This is the wording of the narration of Ishaq.  

مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ يَسْتَحِقُّ بِهَا مَالًا وَهُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ وَتَصْدِيقُ ذَلِكَ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا أُولَئِكَ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ} [آل عمران 77] الْآيَةَ قَالَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْأَشْعَثَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ مَا يُحَدِّثُكُمْ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ؟ فَحَدَّثْنَاهُ بِمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ لَفِيَّ نَزَلَتْ كَانَتْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ خُصُومَةٌ فِي بِئْرٍ فَاخْتَصَمْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ شَاهِدَاكَ أَوْ يَمِينُهُ فَقُلْتُ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ وَلَا يُبَالِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ يَسْتَحِقُّ بِهَا مَالًا هُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} [آل عمران 77] الْآيَةَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ إِسْحَاقَ  

[Machine] Whoever swears an oath to receive wealth while being sinful and angry with Allah, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him. Then Allah revealed "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their own oaths for a small price" [Quran 3:77] until the end of the verse. Then Ash'ath ibn Qays came to us and said, "What is Abu Abdur-Rahman telling you?" So we informed him of what he had said, and he said, "He has told the truth. This verse was revealed concerning a dispute between me and another man over something. We presented our case to the Prophet ﷺ , and he said, 'Your oath is your witness, or your right hand.' So I said, 'Then he swore an oath, and it does not matter to me.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever swears an oath to receive wealth while being sinful and angry with Allah, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him.' Then Allah revealed the confirmation of that, and then he recited this verse."
