[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever swears an oath in order to unlawfully take the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him. The confirmation of this is in the book of Allah (swt): 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price...' [Al-Imran 3:77]". Until the end of the verse.

Al-Ash'ath bin Qays entered and said, "What has Abu 'Abdur-Rahman told you?" They said, "So and so." He said, "He spoke the truth. The verse was revealed concerning me and a man in Yemen who had a dispute. We presented the case to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he asked, 'Do you have any evidence?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Then take an oath.' So I swore an oath. He said, 'Whoever swears an oath in order to unlawfully take the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him.' So Allah (swt) revealed the verse: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price...' [Al-Imran 3:77]" until the end of the verse.

He who perjured with a view to appropriating the property of a Muslim, and he is in fact a liar and would meet Allah in a state that He would be angry with him. He (the narrator) said: There came Ash'ath b. Qais and said (to the people): What does Abu Abdur-Rahman (the Kunya of Abdullah b. Umar) narrate to you? They replied: So and so. Upon this he remarked: Abu Abdur-Rahman told the truth. This (command) has been revealed in my case. There was a piece of land in Yemen over which I and another person had a claim. I brought the dispute with him to the Messenger of Allah (to decide) He (the Holy Prophet) said: Can you produce an evidence (in your support)? I said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: (Then the decision would be made) on his oath. I said: He would readily take an oath. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked: He who perjured for appropriating the wealth of a Muslim, whereas he is a liar, would meet Allah while He would be angry with him. This verse was then revealed:" Verily those who barter Allah's covenant and their oaths at a small price..." (iii 77).

Al-Ash'ath entered and asked, "What did Abu 'Abd al-Rahman (referring to the Prophet) tell you?" We replied with what was said, so he recited the verse that was revealed to him, "I had a dispute with a man over a piece of land, so I referred the matter to the Prophet. I had no evidence, so he asked me, 'Do you swear?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if I do, will it be permissible?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who swears an oath in which he tells a lie to take the property of a Muslim by unfair means, will meet Allah while He is angry with him. Al-Ash'ath said: I swear by Allah, he said this about me. There was some land between me and a Jew, but he denied it to me; so I presented him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ asked me: Have you any evidence? I replied: No. He said to the Jew: Take an oath. I said: Messenger of Allah, now he will take an oath and take my property. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verse, "As for those who sell the faith they owe to Allah and their own plighted word for a small price, they shall have no portion in the hereafter." [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath to take something unlawfully while lying, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." This is confirmed in the Book of Allah (Quran), "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their own oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter" [Surah Al-Imran 77]. Ash'ath ibn Qays came and asked, "What is Abu Abdur Rahman talking to you about?" We said, "He said such and such." Ash'ath said, "By Allah, he is telling the truth. Allah revealed a verse about me and another person with whom I had a dispute." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Are you his witness or do you have any oath?" I said, "In that case, he will swear an oath." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath to take something unlawfully while lying, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Then Allah revealed this verse. Abu Abdur Rahman was followed by Mansur ibn Al-Mu'tamir.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes an oath in order to withhold someone's money, while Allah's anger is upon him, and his sincerity is mentioned in the Book of Allah the Most High: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - those will have no portion in the Hereafter.' " Then Ash'ath ibn Qays came and said, "What is Abu Abdur-Rahman telling you?" We said such and such. He said, "By Allah, it was revealed about me and Fulan bin Fulan. There was a dispute between me and him, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Do you have witnesses or an oath?' I said, 'Then he will take an oath.' He said, 'Whoever takes an oath in order to withhold someone's money, while he is lying, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him.' So Allah revealed this verse."

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "Whoever swears falsely by taking an oath, in order to take away the property of a Muslim, or his brother, will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Allah then revealed in the Quran the confirmation of this, "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price" [Al-Imran 77] until the end of the verse. Ashath then passed by and said to me, "This verse was revealed about me, and about a dispute I had regarding a well."

ʿAbdullah bin Masud said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever takes an oath when asked to do so, in which he may deprive a Muslim of his property unlawfully, will meet Allah Who will be angry with him.' So Allah revealed in confirmation of this statement:--"Verily! Those who Purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter..." (3.77) Then entered Al-Ash'ath bin Qais and said, "What is Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman narrating to you?" We replied, 'So-and-so." Al-Ash'ath said, "This Verse was revealed in my connection. I had a well in the land of my cousin (and he denied my, possessing it). On that the Prophet ﷺ said to me, 'Either you bring forward a proof or he (i.e. your cousin) takes an oath (to confirm his claim)' I said, 'I am sure he would take a (false) oath, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'If somebody takes an oath when asked to do so through which he may deprive a Muslim of his property (unlawfully) and he is a liar in his oath, he will meet Allah Who will be angry with him.' [Machine] Whoever swears an oath and is dishonest in it, seeking by it wealth while he is sinful therein, he will meet Allah while he is angry with him. And the confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - they will have no share in the Hereafter" [Al-Imran 3:77]. Thumamah ibn Qays then came to us and said, "What is Abu Abdur Rahman talking to you about?" So we informed him of what he said. Thumamah said, "He has told the truth. A similar incident happened to me. I had a dispute with a man over a well, so we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, 'Do you have any witnesses or evidence?' I replied, 'No, but I am willing to swear an oath.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever swears an oath and is dishonest in it, seeking by it wealth while he is sinful therein, he will meet Allah while he is angry with him.' Then Allah (ﷻ) revealed the confirmation of that and recited this verse: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - they will have no share in the Hereafter' [Al-Imran 3:77]. This is the wording of the narration of Ishaq.

Al-Ash'ath said: "By Allah, that happened between myself and a man from the Jews. There was a disputed land between us, and he denied my claim, so I brought him to the Prophet, ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to me, 'Do you have proof?' I said, 'No.' So he said to the Jew, 'Swear.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if he swears, then he will take my wealth.' So Allah revealed the verse: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter' (Quran 3:77)."
