The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive somebody of his property will meet Allah while He will be angry with him." Allah revealed: 'Verily those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant, and their oaths.' ........(3.77) Al-Ashath came (to the place where ʿAbdullah was narrating) and said, "What has Abu ʿAbdur- Rahman (i.e. ʿAbdullah) been telling you? This verse was revealed concerning me. I had a well in the land of a cousin of mine. The Prophet ﷺ asked me to bring witnesses (to confirm my claim). I said, 'I don't have witnesses.' He said, 'Let the defendant take an oath then.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will take a (false) oath immediately.' Then the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the above narration and Allah revealed the verse to confirm what he had said." (See Hadith No. 692)
Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) said, "Whoever took a false oath in order to grab somebody's property will meet Allah while Allah will be angry with him." Allah revealed the following verse to confirm that:--"Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant And their oaths...a painful torment." (3.77) Al-Ash'ath bin Qais came to us and asked as to what Abu Abdur-Rehman (i.e. Ibn Mas'ud) was telling you." We related the story to him. On that he said, "He has told the truth. This verse was revealed about me. I had some dispute with another man regarding a well and we took the case before Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to me), "Produce two witnesses (to support your claim); otherwise the defendant has the right to take an oath (to refute your claim).' I said, 'The defendant would not mind to take a false oath." Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'Whoever took a false oath in order to grab someone else's property will meet Allah, Allah will be angry with him.' Allah then revealed what Confirmed it." Al-Ash'ath then recited the following Verse:--"Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant, And their oaths . . . (to) . . . they shall have a painful torment!' (3.77) (See Hadith No. 546)
فَحَدَّثْنَاهُ قَالَ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ لَفِيَّ وَاللَّهِ أُنْزِلَتْ كَانَتْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ خُصُومَةٌ فِي بِئْرٍ فَاخْتَصَمْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ شَاهِدُكَ أَوْ يَمِينُهُ قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ وَلاَ يُبَالِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ يَسْتَحِقُّ بِهَا مَالاً هُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لَقِيَ اللَّهَ وَهْوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ اقْتَرَأَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلاً} إِلَى {وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ}
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a false oath in order to grab another man's (or his brother's) property, then Allah will be angry with him when he will meet him." Then Allah confirmed this by revealing the Divine Verse: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths . . . Will get painful punishment." (3.77) Al-Ash'ath met me and asked, "What did ʿAbdullah tell you today?" I said, "So and so." He said, "The Verse was revealed regarding my case."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever swears falsely in order to grab the property of a Muslim (or of his brother), Allah will be angry with him when he meets Him." Allah then revealed in confirmation of the above statement:--'Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their own oaths.' (3.77) Al-Ash'ath said, "This Verse was revealed regarding me and a companion of mine when we had a dispute about a well."
[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Whoever swears a false oath in order to wrongfully take someone's property, or accuses his brother, will meet Allah while He is angry with him. The confirmation of this is revealed in the Quran, 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price - for them is no share in the Hereafter' (3:77) until 'a painful punishment' (3:77). Al-Ash'ath then met me and asked, 'What did Abdullah tell you today?' I said to him, 'He mentioned such and such.' Al-Ash'ath said, 'Indeed, it has been revealed about me.'"
[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath on a matter in which he is lying, in order to unlawfully take someone's property, then he has met Allah while He is angry with him." The confirmation of this was revealed in the Qur'an in the verse {Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah}. Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays passed by them while they were discussing this hadith in the mosque and he asked, "What does Ibn Umm 'Abd say?" They informed him, so he said, "He spoke the truth, indeed this verse was revealed concerning me and my companion in a well that I claimed and none of us had any proof, so he swore an oath on it. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned this at that time."
[AI] The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "Whoever swears falsely by a pact of patience in order to usurp his brother's wealth, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." This is because Allah says, "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price..." until the end of the verse.
[AI] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "Whoever swears falsely by taking an oath, in order to take away the property of a Muslim, or his brother, will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Allah then revealed in the Quran the confirmation of this, "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price" [Al-Imran 77] until the end of the verse. Ashath then passed by and said to me, "This verse was revealed about me, and about a dispute I had regarding a well."
