We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to hear and obey in ease and hardship, not to dispute authority with those entitled to it, and to stand or speak the truth wherever we may be, not fearing for the sake of Allah the blame of any blamer.

بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ، وَأَنْ لاَ نُنَازِعَ الأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ، وَأَنْ نَقُومَ أَوْ نَقُولَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا، لاَ نَخَافُ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لاَئِمٍ.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took an oath of allegiance from us on our listening to and obeying the orders of our commander in adversity and prosperity, in pleasure and displeasure (and even) when somebody is given preference over us, on our avoiding to dispute the delegation of powers to a person deemed to be a fit recipient thereof (in the eye of one who delegates it) and on our telling the truth in whatever position we be without fearing in the matter ef Allah the reproach of the reproacher.

بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْعُسْرِ وَالْيُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَعَلَى أَثَرَةٍ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى أَنْ لاَ نُنَازِعَ الأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَعَلَى أَنْ نَقُولَ بِالْحَقِّ أَيْنَمَا كُنَّا لاَ نَخَافُ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لاَئِمٍ

"We pledged to the Messenger of Allah to hear and obey, both in times of ease and hardship, when we felt energetic and when we felt tired, that we would not contend with the orders of whomever was entrusted with it, that we would was entrusted with it, that we would stand firm in the way of truth wherever we may be, and that we would not fear the blame of the blamers."

"We pledged to the Messenger of Allah to hear and obey both in times of hardship and ease, when we felt energetic and when we felt tired, that we would not contend with the orders of whomever was entrusted with it, that we would speak the truth or stand firm in the way of truth wherever we may be, and that we would not fear the blame of the blamers."

"From his father," and Yahya said: "From his father," from his grandfather, whom said: 'We pledged to the Messenger of Allah to hear and obey during our hardship and our ease, when we felt energetic and when we felt tired, and when others are preferred over us, that we would not contend with the orders of whomever was entrusted with it, that we would stand firm for the truth wherever it may be, and that we would not fear the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah." (Sahih) Shu'bah said: "Sayyar did not mention this statement: 'Wherever it may be' while Yahya mentioned it." Shu'bah said: "If I have added anything to it, then it is from Sayyar or from Yahya."

“We gave our pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, pledging to listen and obey in times of hardship and times of ease, willingly or reluctantly, and when others are shown preference over us, and that we would not dispute the order of those in charge, that we would speak the truth wherever we are, and that we would not fear the blame of anyone when acting or speaking for the sake of Allah.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَمَّا يَحْيَى فَقَالَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي عُسْرِنَا وَيُسْرِنَا وَمَنْشَطِنَا وَمَكْرَهِنَا وَالْأَثَرَةِ عَلَيْنَا وَأَنْ لَا نُنَازِعَ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَنَقُومَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُ كَانَ وَلَا نَخَافَ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ

[AI] Sufyan and Ubada are nobles and they are among the seven who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to listen and obey, whether in ease or hardship, in times of ease or difficulty, willingly or unwillingly. We do not dispute the authority of those in charge and we speak the truth wherever we are, without fear of blame in Allah’s sight. Sufyan said, "Some people have added things that you have not seen—hidden disbelief."

سُفْيَانُ وَعُبَادَةُ نَقِيبٌ وَهُوَ مِنَ السَّبْعَةِ بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْعُسْرِ وَالْيُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَلَا نُنَازِعُ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ ونَقُولُ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا لَا نَخَافُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ زَادَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ مَا لَمْ تَرَوْا كُفْرًا بَوَاحًا

[AI] We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , with the pledge of war. 'Ubadah was one of the twelve who pledged allegiance at the First 'Aqabah for the pledge of obedience to women in hearing and obeying: in difficult and easy times, in pleasure and displeasure, and not to dispute the authority of those deserving it. We speak the truth wherever we may be, and we do not fear the blame of anyone in Allah.

بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْعَةَ الْحَرْبِ وَكَانَ عُبَادَةُ مِنَ الِاثْنَيْ عَشَرَ الَّذِينَ بَايَعُوا فِي الْعَقَبَةِ الْأُولَى عَلَى بَيْعَةِ النِّسَاءِ فِي السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِفِي عُسْرِنَا وَيُسْرِنَا وَمَنْشَطِنَا وَمَكْرَهِنَا وَلَا نُنَازِعُ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَأَنْ نَقُولَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا لَا نَخَافُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ

“We gave our pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, pledging to listen and obey in times of hardship and times of ease, willingly or reluctantly, and when others are shown preference over us, and that we would not dispute the order of those in charge, that we would speak the truth wherever we are, and that we would not fear the blame of anyone when acting or speaking for the sake of Allah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2866)

“We gave our pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, pledging to listen and obey in times of hardship and times of ease, willingly or reluctantly, and when others are shown preference over us, and that we would not dispute the order of those in charge, that we would speak the truth wherever we are, and that we would not fear the blame of anyone when acting or speaking for the sake of Allah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2866)

Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said, ''Ubada ibn al-Walid ibn Ubada ibn as-Samit informed me from his father that his grandfather (Ubada) said, 'We made a contract with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to hear and obey in ease and hardship, enthusiasm and reluctance, and not to dispute with people in authority and to speak or establish the truth wherever we were without worrying about criticism.'"

قَالَ بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْيُسْرِ وَالْعُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَأَنْ لاَ نُنَازِعَ الأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَأَنْ نَقُولَ أَوْ نَقُومَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا لاَ نَخَافُ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لاَئِمٍ

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade two sales in one sale.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعَتَيْنِ فِي بَيْعَةٍ

Malik related to me from Abdullah ibn Dinar from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling or giving away the wala'.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الْوَلاَءِ وَعَنْ هِبَتِهِ

“We gave our pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, pledging to listen and obey in times of hardship and times of ease, willingly or reluctantly, and when others are shown preference over us, and that we would not dispute the order of those in charge, that we would speak the truth wherever we are, and that we would not fear the blame of anyone when acting or speaking for the sake of Allah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2866)

عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ أنه نهى عن بيع الغرر وعَن بيع الحصي

قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عن الشغار وعَن بيع الغرر وعَن بيع الحصاة

"We pledged to the Messenger of Allah to hear and obey, both in times of ease and hardship, when we felt energetic and when we felt tired, that we would not contend with the orders of whomever was entrusted with it, that we would was entrusted with it, that we would stand firm in the way of truth wherever we may be, and that we would not fear the blame of the blamers." بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْعُسْرِ وَالْيُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَأَثَرَةٍ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى أَنْ لَا نُنَازِعَ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَعَلَى أَنْ نَقُولَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا

"We pledged to the Messenger of Allah to hear and obey, both in times of ease and hardship, when we felt energetic and when we felt tired, that we would not contend with the orders of whomever was entrusted with it, that we would was entrusted with it, that we would stand firm in the way of truth wherever we may be, and that we would not fear the blame of the blamers." «بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْيُسْرِ وَالْعُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَأَنْ لَا نُنَازِعَ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَأَنْ نَقُولَ أَوْ نَقُومَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُ كُنَّا لَا نَخَافَ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ»

We gave the oath of allegiance to Messenger of Allah ﷺ that we would listen to and obey him both at the time when we were active and at the time when we were tired and that we would not fight against the ruler or disobey him, and would stand firm for the truth or say the truth wherever we might be, and in the Way of Allah we would not be afraid of the blame of the blamers. بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْيُسْرِ وَالْعُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَأَنْ لَا نُنَازِعَ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَأَنْ نَقُومَ أَوْ نَقُولَ بِالْحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا لَا نَخَافَ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked about the prayer garment during the Battle of Tabuk, and he said it is like the back of a saddle.

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ عَنْ سُتْرَةِ الْمُصَلِّي فَقَالَ مِثْلُ مُؤَخِّرَةِ الرَّحْلِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He who strikes the cheeks or tears the garment and calls with the calls of the pre-Islamic era is not one of us." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, Abu Saeed ibn Abi Amr, and Abu Tharr ibn Abi al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Muzakkar narrated to us. They said: Abu Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, who narrated from Harun ibn Suleiman, who narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Mahdi, from Sufyan, from Shu'bah, from Al-A'mash, from Abdullah ibn Murrah, from Masruq, from Abdullah, from the Prophet ﷺ with similar words.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ ضَرَبَ الْخُدُودَ وَشَقَّ الْجُيُوبَ وَدَعَا بِدَعْوَى الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ 7116 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو وَأَبُو ذَرِّ بْنُ أَبِي الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ الْمُذَكِّرِ قَالُوا ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ وَشُعْبَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِمِثْلِهِ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ forbade the sale of deception and the sale of pebbles.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الْغَرَرِ وَعَنْ بَيْعِ حَصَاةٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When you see my nation, do not say to the oppressor that he is a oppressor, for then you would have betrayed Muhammad bin Muslim. This is Abu al-Zubair and he did not hear it from Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As 11517." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, in the narration of Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, who said: I heard al-Abbas bin Muhammad saying: I heard Yahya bin Ma'in saying: Abu al-Zubair did not hear it from Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As 11518. And regarding its authenticity, Abu Sa'd al-Malini informed us, who was informed by Abu Ahmad bin Adi, who was informed by Muhammad bin Bakkar, who was informed by Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Munadi, who was informed by Shababa, who was informed by Abu Shihab, who was informed by al-Hasan bin Amr, who heard it from Abu al-Zubair, who heard it from Amr bin Shuayb, who heard it from Abdullah bin Amr, who heard it from the Prophet ﷺ in a similar manner.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ أُمَّتِي لَا تَقُولُ لِلظَّالِمِ أَنْتَ ظَالِمٌ فَقَدْ تُوُدِّعَ مِنْهُمْ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ هَذَا هُوَ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ وَلَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ 11517 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ مَعِينٍ يَقُولُ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ 11518 وبِصِحَّةِ ذَلِكَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الْمُنَادِي ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا أَبُو شِهَابٍ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ

[AI] And Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq said, in what he used as evidence against the Ansar on the day of Al-Saqifah, "Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with guidance and the religion of truth. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invited to Islam, and Allah took hold of our hearts and bodies towards what he called us to. We, the Muhajireen, were the first to accept Islam, and we were his tribe and close relatives." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated this to us, and Abu Ja'far Al-Baghdadi narrated it to us, and Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Khalid narrated it to us, and my father narrated it to me, from Ibn Lahe'ah, from Abu Al-Aswad, from Urwah ibn Al-Zubayr. And Abu Al-Husain ibn Al-Fadl informed us that Abu Bakr, Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Attab narrated it to us, and Al-Qasim ibn Abdullah narrated it to us, and Ibn Abi Uways narrated it to us, and Ismail ibn Ibrahim ibn Uqbah narrated it to us, from Musa ibn Uqbah. And Musa mentioned it from Abu Bakr. Additionally, Musa added in his narration, "and the one with the ties of kinship."

وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ ؓ فِيمَا يَحْتَجُّ بِهِ عَلَى الْأَنْصَارِ يَوْمَ السَّقِيفَةِ بَعَثَ اللهُ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ فَدَعَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَأَخَذَ اللهُ بِقُلُوبِنَا وَنَوَاصِينَا إِلَى مَا دَعَا إِلَيْهِ وَكُنَّا مَعْشَرَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ أَوَّلَ النَّاسِ إِسْلَامًا وَنَحْنُ عَشِيرَتُهُ وَأَقَارِبُهُ أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ ثنا أَبِي ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَتَّابٍ ثنا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ فَذَكَرَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ زَادَ مُوسَى فِي رِوَايَتِهِ وَذُو رَحِمِهِ

[AI] Abu Asim Al-Nabil narrated that Sufyan, referring to Ath-Thawri, informed us. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Al-Hasan, Abu Zakariya ibn Abi Ishaq, and Abu Abdul Rahman Al-Sulami said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us. And Rabia ibn Sulaiman informed Rabee, and Al-Shafi'i narrated from Sufyan, referring to Ibn Uyaynah. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ishaq informed us, and Ismail ibn Qutaybah narrated, all of them from Yahya ibn Yahya, who narrated from Hushaym, all of them from Abdul-Malik ibn Umayr, from Abdullah ibn Abu Bakrah, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A judge should not make a decision between two parties while he is angry. The meaning is one."

ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ النَّبِيلُ أنبأ سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي الثَّوْرِيَّ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ وَأَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالُوا ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أنبأ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ أنبأ الشَّافِعِيُّ أنبأ سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أنبأ هُشَيْمٌ كُلُّهُمْ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَا يَقْضِي الْقَاضِي بَيْنَ اثْنَيْنِ وَهُوَ غَضْبَانُ مَعْنَاهُمْ وَاحِدٌ

[AI] We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to listen and obey in times of ease and difficulty, in times of enthusiasm and reluctance, and to not dispute the matter with its rightful people and to speak the truth wherever we may be, without fearing blame from anyone in Allah.

بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْعُسْرِ وَالْيُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَأَثَرَةٍ عَلَيْنَا وَأَنْ لَا نُنَازِعَ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَنَقُولَ الْحَقَّ حَيْثُ مَا كُنَّا لَا نَخَافُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ

"عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الوَلِيد بْنِ الصَّامتِ قَالَ: بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ الله ﷺ عَلَى السَّمعْ وَالطَّاعَةِ في العُسْرِ، وَاليُسْرِ، وَالمَنشَطِ، وَالمَكْرَه، وَالأثَرَةِ عَليْنا، وَأنْ لا نُنَازِعَ الأمْرَ أهْلَهُ، وَأنْ نَقُولَ بِالحَقِّ حَيْثُمَا كنّا لاَ نَخَافُ فِى الله لَوْمَةَ لاَئِمٍ".
