I went to the Prophet ﷺ and with me were two men from the Ash'ari tribe. One of them was on my right hand and the other on my left. Both of them made a request for a position (of authority) while the Prophet ﷺ was brushing his teeth with a tooth-stick. He said (to me): Abu Musa (or 'Abdullah b. Qais), what do you say (about the request they have made)? I said: By God Who sent thee on thy mission with truth, they did not disclose to me what they had in their minds, and I did not know that they would ask for a position. The narrator says (while recalling this hadith): I visualise as if I were looking at the miswak of the Prophet ﷺ between his lips. He (the Holy Prophet) said: We shall not or shall never appoint to the public offices (in our State) those who with to have them, but you may go, Abu Musa (or Abdullah b. Qais) (to take up your assignment). He sent him to Yemen as governor. then he sent Mu'adh b. jabal in his wake (to help him in the discharge of duties). When Mu'adh reached the camp of Abu Musa, the latter (received him and) said: Please get yourself down; and he spread for him a mattress, while there was a man bound hand and foot as a prisoner. Mu'adh said: Who is this? Abu Musa said: He was a Jew. He embraced Islam. Then he reverted to his false religion and became a Jew. Mu'adh said: I won't sit until he is killed according to the decree of Allah and His Apostle ﷺ (in this case). Abu Musa said: Be seated. It will be done. He said: I won't sit unless he is killed in accordance with the decree of Allah and His Apostle ﷺ. He repeated these words thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered him (to be killed) and he was kilied. Then the two talked of standing in prayer at night. One of them, i. e. Mu'adh, said: I sleep (for a part of the night) and stand in prayer (for a part) and I hope that I shall get the same reward for steeping as I shall get for standing (in prayer).

We went out to Khaibar in the company of the Prophet. While we were proceeding at night, a man from the group said to 'Amir, "O 'Amir! Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, so he got down and started reciting for the people poetry that kept pace with the camels' footsteps, saying:-- "O Allah! Without You we Would not have been guided On the right path Neither would be have given In charity, nor would We have prayed. So please forgive us, what we have committed (i.e. our defects); let all of us Be sacrificed for Your Cause And send Sakina (i.e. calmness) Upon us to make our feet firm When we meet our enemy, and If they will call us towards An unjust thing, We will refuse. The infidels have made a hue and Cry to ask others' help Against us." The Prophet ﷺ on that, asked, "Who is that (camel) driver (reciting poetry)?" The people said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Akwaʿ." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him." A man amongst the people said, "O Allah's Prophet! has (martyrdom) been granted to him. Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." Then we reached and besieged Khaibar till we were afflicted with severe hunger. Then Allah helped the Muslims conquer it (i.e. Khaibar). In the evening of the day of the conquest of the city, the Muslims made huge fires. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What are these fires? For cooking what, are you making the fire?" The people replied, "(For cooking) meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They (i.e. people) said, "The meat of donkeys." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Throw away the meat and break the pots!" Some man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the pots instead?" He said, "(Yes, you can do) that too." So when the army files were arranged in rows (for the clash), 'Amir's sword was short and he aimed at the leg of a Jew to strike it, but the sharp blade of the sword returned to him and injured his own knee, and that caused him to die. When they returned from the battle, Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me (in a sad mood). He took my hand and said, "What is bothering you?" I replied, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! The people say that the deeds of 'Amir are lost." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever says so, is mistaken, for 'Amir has got a double reward." The Prophet raised two fingers and added, "He (i.e. Amir) was a persevering struggler in the Cause of Allah and there are few 'Arabs who achieved the like of (good deeds) 'Amir had done."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Musa and Muʿadh bin Jabal to Yemen. He sent each of them to administer a province as Yemen consisted of two provinces. The Prophet ﷺ said (to them), "Facilitate things for the people and do not make things difficult for them (Be kind and lenient (both of you) with the people, and do not be hard on them) and give the people good tidings and do not repulse them. So each of them went to carry on his job. So when any one of them toured his province and happened to come near (the border of the province of) his companion, he would visit him and greet him. Once Muʿadh toured that part of his state which was near (the border of the province of) his companion Abu Musa. Muʿadh came riding his mule till he reached Abu Musa and saw him sitting, and the people had gathered around him. Behold! There was a man tied with his hands behind his neck. Muʿadh said to Abu Musa, "O ʿAbdullah bin Qais! What is this?" Abu Musa replied. "This man has reverted to Heathenism after embracing Islam." Muʿadh said, "I will not dismount till he is killed." Abu Musa replied, "He has been brought for this purpose, so come down." Muʿadh said, "I will not dismount till he is killed." So Abu Musa ordered that he be killed, and he was killed. Then Muʿadh dismounted and said, "O ʿAbdullah (bin Qais)! How do you recite the Qur'an ?" Abu Musa said, "I recite the Qur'an regularly at intervals and piecemeal. How do you recite it O Muʿadh?" Muʿadh said, "I sleep in the first part of the night and then get up after having slept for the time devoted for my sleep and then recite as much as Allah has written for me. So I seek Allah's Reward for both my sleep as well as my prayer (at night).

The people claim that all the deeds of Amir have been annulled." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who said so?" I replied, "So-and-so and soand- so and Usaid bin Al-Hudair Al-Ansari said, 'Whoever says so is telling a lie. Verily, 'Amir will have double reward."' (While speaking) the Prophet ﷺ put two of his fingers together to indicate that, and added, "He was really a hard-working man and a Mujahid (devout fighter in Allah's Cause) and rarely have there lived in it (i.e., Medina or the battle-field) an "Arab like him."

Abu Musa said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ along with two men (from the tribe) of Ashʿariyin, one on my right and the other on my left, while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brushing his teeth (with a Siwak), and both men asked him for some employment. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'O Abu Musa (O ʿAbdullah bin Qais!).' I said, 'By Him Who sent you with the Truth, these two men did not tell me what was in their hearts and I did not feel (realize) that they were seeking employment.' As if I were looking now at his Siwak being drawn to a corner under his lips, and he said, 'We never (or, we do not) appoint for our affairs anyone who seeks to be employed. But O Abu Musa! (or ʿAbdullah bin Qais!) Go to Yemen.'" The Prophet then sent Muʿadh bin Jabal after him and when Muʿadh reached him, he spread out a cushion for him and requested him to get down (and sit on the cushion). Behold: There was a fettered man beside Abu Muisa. Muʿadh asked, "Who is this (man)?" Abu Muisa said, "He was a Jew and became a Muslim and then reverted back to Judaism." Then Abu Muisa requested Muʿadh to sit down but Muʿadh said, "I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Apostle (for such cases) and repeated it thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, "Then we discussed the night prayers and one of us said, 'I pray and sleep, and I hope that Allah will reward me for my sleep as well as for my prayers.'"

We marched upon Khaibar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We journeyed during the night. One of the people said to (my brother) 'Amir b. al-Akwa': Won't you recite to us some of your verses? Amir was a poet. So he began to chant his verses to urge the camels, reciting: O God, if Thou hadst not guided us We would have neither been guided rightly nor practised charity, Nor offered prayers. We wish to lay down our lives for Thee; so forgive Thou our lapses, And keep us steadfast when we encounter (our enemies). Bestow upon us peace and tranquillity. Behold, when with a cry they called upon us to help. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who is this driver (of the camels)? They said: It is 'Amir. He said: God will show mercy to him. A man said: Martyrdom is reserved for him. Messenger of Allah, would that you had allowed us to benefit ourselves from his life. (The narrator says): We reached Khaibar and besieged them, and (we continued the siege) until extreme hunger afflicted us. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Behold, God has conquered it for you. When it was evening of the day on which the city was conquered. the Muslims lit many fires. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What are these fires? And what are they cooking? They said: They are cooking meat. He asked. Which meat? They said: That of domestic asses. He said: Let them throw it away and break the pots (in which it is being cooked). A man said: Or should they throw it away and wash the pots? He said: They may do that. When the people drew themselves up in battle array 'Amir caught hold of his sword that was rather short He drove a Jew before him to strike him with it. (As he struck him), his sword recoiled and struck his own knee, and 'Amir died of the wound. When the people returned (after the conquest of Kliaibar) and he (Salama) had caught hold of my hand, and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that I was silent (and dejected) ; he said: What's the matter with thee? I said to him: My father and my mother be thy ransom, people presume that 'Amir's sacrifice has been in vain. He asked: Who has said that? I said: So and so and Usaid b. Hudair al-Ansari. He said: Who has said that has lied. For him (for 'Amir) there is a double reward. (He indicated this by putting two of his fingers together.) He was a devotee of God and a warrior fighting for His cause. There will be hardly any Arab who can fight as bravely as he did. Qutaiba has differed in a few words.

I went to the Prophet ﷺ while two men who were Ash’ arIs were with me. One of them was on my right and the other on my left side. Bothe of them asked him for employment. The prophet ﷺ was silent. He asked : What do you say Abu Musa, or ‘Abd Allah b. Qais (Abu Musa’s name)? I replied: By him who has sent you with truth, they did not inform me of what they had in their hearts, and I did not know that they would ask for an employment. He said : I have the scene before my eyes that he had his toothstick below his lip which receded. He (the prophet) said: We will never or will not put in charge of our work anyone who asks for it. But go, ye, Abu Musa, or ‘Abd Allah b. Qais. He then sent him as a Governor of the Yemen, After him he sent Muadh b. Jabal. When Muadh came to him, he said: come down , and he put a cushion for him. He saw that a man was chained with him. He asked : What is this? He replied: He was a Jew and he accepted Islam. He then converted to his religion, an evil religion. He said: I will not sit until he is killed according to the decision of Allah and his Apostle ﷺ. He said: Yes, be seated. He said: I will not sit until he is killed according to the decision of Allah and his Apostle (peace be upon him). He said it three times. He then commanded for it and he was killed. Both of them then discussed the question of prayer and vigilance at night. One of them, probably Muadh, said : So far as I am concerned, I sleep and I keep vigilance: I keep vigilance and I sleep: I hope for the same reward for my sleep as for my vigilance.

"I came to the Prophet ﷺ when he was using the Siwak and with me were two men of the Ash'aris - one on my right and the other on my left - who were seeking to be appointed as officials. I said: 'By the One Who sent you as a Prophet with the truth, they did not tell me why they wanted to come with me and I did not realize that they were seeking to be appointed as officials.' And I could see his Siwak beneath his lip, then it slipped and he said: 'We do not' - or; 'We will never appoint as an official anyone who seeks that. Rather you should go.'" So he sent his (Abu Musa) to Yemen, then he sent Mu'adh bin Jabal to go after him - may Allah be pleased with them.

Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman as-Sulami and Hibban bin ʿAtiyyah had a dispute. ʿAbdur-Rahman said to Hibban: I know what made your companion - meaning ʿAli ؓ - audacious. He said: What is it, may you be bereft of your father? He said. Something I heard ʿAli ؓ say. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, az-Zubair and Abu Marthad on a mission, and we were all horsemen. He said: ʿGo to Rawdat Khakh, for there you will find a woman who has a letter with her from Hatib bin Abi Baltaʿah to the mushrikeen; bring it to me.ʿ So we went on our horses until we caught up with her where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told us, travelling on a camel of hers. He [Hatib] had written to the people of Makkah, telling them about the march of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We said to her. Where is the letter you have with you? She said: I do not have any letter. We made her camel kneel down and searched her luggage for it, but we did not find anything. My two companions said: We do not see any letter with her, I said: You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not tell a lie. Then I swore: By the One by whom oaths are sworn, you will give us the letter or we will remove your clothes. She stretched out her hand to her girdle, which was wrapped around her, and brought out the letter. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he has betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers; let me strike his neck. He said: ʿO Hatib, what made you do what you did?ʿ He said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by Allah, it is not that I do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to do a favour for the people by means of which Allah might protect my family and my property, for every one of your Companions has some of his people there through whom Allah will protect his family and his property. He said: You have spoken the truth, do not say anything to him but good.ʿ ʻUmar said: O, Messenger of Allah, he betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers, let me strike his neck. He said. ʿls he not one of the people of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon them and said. “Do what you like, for Paradise is guaranteed for you.ʻʼ ʻUmarʻs eyes filled with tears and he said: Allah, may He be exalted, and His Messenger know best.

When I completed my Rajaz verse, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who said that?' I said: 'My brother.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'May Allah have mercy on him.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, some people are afraid to offer the (funeral) prayer for him, and they are saying that he is a man who died by his own weapon.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'He died striving as a Mujahid.'" [AI] Aamir was a poet who descended saying,

"Allah, if it weren't for You, we wouldn't have been guided,

nor would we have been charitable or prayed,

so forgive us for what we have done,

and keep us steadfast if we encounter hardship.

Bestow tranquility upon us when we are in distress.

Indeed, when we are called, we respond,

and through the calling, our calamities are lifted."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who said this?"

They replied, "Ibn Al-Akwa."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on him."

Then a man said, "You have done us a great favor, O Messenger of Allah."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He will be rewarded twice for it."

Then a man struck a Jew from Bani Il with a whip,

and the tip of the sword hit his knee, causing a fly to fall into his eye.

People said, "His work was in vain, so he killed himself."

The man said, "I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he arrived in Madinah, and he was in the masjid. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, they claim that Aamir's work was in vain.' He asked, 'Who says that?' I said, 'Some of the Ansar, including so and so.' He said, 'Whoever says that is lying. He will be rewarded twice for it. He was a striving and fighting Arab who walked among us, and he increased us in honor.'"

[AI] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and Mu'adh bin Jabal to Yemen, he commanded us to stay close to our companions. He said to us, "Make things easy for people and do not make them difficult. Give them glad tidings and do not repel them." So, when we stood up to leave, we said, "O Messenger of Allah, guide us regarding two things which we used to do in ignorance: we used to make a drink from honey and let it ferment until it became strong and intoxicating, and we used to prepare a drink from barley and corn and let it ferment until it became strong and intoxicating." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been granted the comprehensive understanding of everything and was well aware of its final outcome. He replied, "Every intoxicating drink is unlawful. Allah has cursed it, its maker, its server, its seller, its consumer, its squeezer, its pourer, and the one for whom it is squeezed, its carrier, and the one to whom it is carried." Then Mu'adh said to me (Abdullah bin Mas'ud): "One day, a man who had previously been a Jew came to me. I invited him to Islam, and he became a Muslim. He then reverted back to his previous religion and started ridiculing and mocking Islam. I said to him, 'Leave, for I will mention your situation to the Prophet ﷺ and convey his verdict to you.' He said, 'Do so.' So, I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned the man's case to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Bring him back.' I brought him back after the Prophet ﷺ had prayed the Asr prayer. The Prophet ﷺ was still sitting in his place and said, 'What do you say?' The man replied, 'I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that you are His Messenger.' The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to be killed, and he was killed. Then Mu'adh asked me (Abdullah bin Mas'ud), 'How do you recite the Qur'an?' I replied, 'I recite it standing, sitting, and lying down, and I excel in my recitation.' Mu'adh asked, 'How do you recite it?' He replied, 'I recite it while in a state of sleep, then I stand during my sleep, and then I wake up and strengthen myself with sleep like I strengthen myself with my standing.'

[AI] We were informed by Al-Muthanna Al-Abdi, the father of Munazil, one of Bani Ghanm, from Al-Ashajj Al-Asari that he came with a group from Abd Al-Qays to visit the Prophet ﷺ . They arrived and the Prophet ﷺ welcomed them and allowed them to stay with him. When they arrived, the Prophet ﷺ raised his voice for them, so they dismounted. The people rushed and only wore their travel clothes. Al-Asari then led the prayer and straightened the rows for his companions and his camel. He then took off his clothes from his cloak and that was seen by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Then he approached the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Indeed, you possess two qualities that Allah and His Messenger love." Al-Asari asked, "What are they?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Humility and patience." Al-Asari asked, "Is that something I was created with, or something I can learn?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, rather it is something you were created with." Al-Asari said, "All praise is due to Allah." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "O people of Abd Al-Qays, why do I see that your faces have changed?" They said, "O Prophet of Allah, we are in a land of famine, where we used to take from these leaves what would cut into our stomachs. But when we were prohibited from eating them, this is what you see in our faces." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, leaves are neither halal (permissible) nor haram (forbidden), but every intoxicant is haram. And it is not that you should withhold from drinking until your veins are filled, then you get into a dispute and one man strikes his cousin with a sword, leaving him crippled." He added, "And on that day, he (Al-Asari) was the crippled one among the people who experienced this."

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ with two men from the Ash'aris, one on my right and the other on my left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was angry with them, so both of them asked about their actions. He said, "O Abu Musa or O Abdullah." I said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I did not know what was in their hearts and I did not feel that they were seeking action. It was as if I saw a toothpick under his lips." He said to me, "We do not command anyone to carry out our actions if they do not desire it. But you, O Abu Musa or O Abdullah ibn Qais, go." So he sent him to Yemen and Mu'adh ibn Jabal followed him. When he arrived, he threw him a cushion and said, "Descend." Then a tied-up man appeared, and he asked, "What is this?" He said, "This was a Jew who embraced Islam but then converted back to his previous religion and said, 'I will not sit until the judgment of Allah and His Messenger kills him' three times." So he ordered him to be killed.

On the day of the Battle of Khaibar my brother fought a fierce fight by the side of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His sword rebounded and killed him. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon hill) talked about his death and doubted (whether it was martyrdom). (They said): (He is) a man killed by his own weapon, and expressed doubt about his affair. Salama said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from Khaibar, I said: Messenger of Allah, permit me that I may recite to you some rajaz verses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted him. 'Umar b. Khattab said: I know what you will recite. I recited: By God, if God had guided us not, We would hive neither been guided aright nor practised charity, Nor offered prayers. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What you have said is true, 'I (continued): And descend on us peace and tranquillity And keep us steadfast if we encounter (with our enemies) And the polytheists have rebelled against us. When I finished my rajaz, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who composed these verses? I said: They were composed by my brother. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May God show mercy to him! I said: By God, some people are reluctant to invoke God's mercy on him (because) they say he is a man who died by his own sword. (Hearing this) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He died as God's devotee and warrior. Ibn Shihab has said: I asked one of the sons of Salama (b. Akwa') about (the death of 'Amir). He related to me a similar tradition except that he said: When I said some people were reluctant invoke God's blessings on him, the Messenger of Allah (may peace be, upon him said: They lied. ('Amir) died as God's devotee and warrior (in the cause of Allah). For him there is a double reward, and he pointed out this by putting his two fingers together. The Prophet ﷺ appointed ʿAbdullah bin Jubair as the commander of the infantry men (archers) who were fifty on the day (of the battle) of Uhud. He instructed them, "Stick to your place, and don't leave it even if you see birds snatching us, till I send for you; and if you see that we have defeated the infidels and made them flee, even then you should not leave your place till I send for you." Then the infidels were defeated. By Allah, I saw the women fleeing lifting up their clothes revealing their leg-bangles and their legs. So, the companions of ʿAbdullah bin Jubair said, "The booty! O people, the booty ! Your companions have become victorious, what are you waiting for now?" ʿAbdullah bin Jubair said, "Have you forgotten what Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you?" They replied, "By Allah! We will go to the people (i.e. the enemy) and collect our share from the war booty." But when they went to them, they were forced to turn back defeated. At that time Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their rear was calling them back. Only twelve men remained with the Prophet ﷺ and the infidels martyred seventy men from us. On the day (of the battle) of Badr, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions had caused the 'Pagans to lose 140 men, seventy of whom were captured and seventy were killed. Then Abu Sufyan asked thrice, "Is Muhammad present amongst these people?" The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions not to answer him. Then he asked thrice, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa present amongst these people?" He asked again thrice, "Is the son of Al-Khattab present amongst these people?" He then returned to his companions and said, "As for these (men), they have been killed." ʿUmar could not control himself and said (to Abu Sufyan), "You told a lie, by Allah! O enemy of Allah! All those you have mentioned are alive, and the thing which will make you unhappy is still there." Abu Sufyan said, "Our victory today is a counterbalance to yours in the battle of Badr, and in war (the victory) is always undecided and is shared in turns by the belligerents, and you will find some of your (killed) men mutilated, but I did not urge my men to do so, yet I do not feel sorry for their deed" After that he started reciting cheerfully, "O Hubal, be high! (1) On that the Prophet ﷺ said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ What shall we say?" He said, "Say, Allah is Higher and more Sublime." (Then) Abu Sufyan said, "We have the (idol) Al ʿUzza, and you have no ʿUzza." The Prophet said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What shall we say?" He said, "Says Allah is our Helper and you have no helper." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3039)
