[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and Mu'adh bin Jabal to Yemen, he commanded us to stay close to our companions. He said to us, "Make things easy for people and do not make them difficult. Give them glad tidings and do not repel them." So, when we stood up to leave, we said, "O Messenger of Allah, guide us regarding two things which we used to do in ignorance: we used to make a drink from honey and let it ferment until it became strong and intoxicating, and we used to prepare a drink from barley and corn and let it ferment until it became strong and intoxicating." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been granted the comprehensive understanding of everything and was well aware of its final outcome. He replied, "Every intoxicating drink is unlawful. Allah has cursed it, its maker, its server, its seller, its consumer, its squeezer, its pourer, and the one for whom it is squeezed, its carrier, and the one to whom it is carried." Then Mu'adh said to me (Abdullah bin Mas'ud): "One day, a man who had previously been a Jew came to me. I invited him to Islam, and he became a Muslim. He then reverted back to his previous religion and started ridiculing and mocking Islam. I said to him, 'Leave, for I will mention your situation to the Prophet ﷺ and convey his verdict to you.' He said, 'Do so.' So, I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned the man's case to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Bring him back.' I brought him back after the Prophet ﷺ had prayed the Asr prayer. The Prophet ﷺ was still sitting in his place and said, 'What do you say?' The man replied, 'I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that you are His Messenger.' The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to be killed, and he was killed. Then Mu'adh asked me (Abdullah bin Mas'ud), 'How do you recite the Qur'an?' I replied, 'I recite it standing, sitting, and lying down, and I excel in my recitation.' Mu'adh asked, 'How do you recite it?' He replied, 'I recite it while in a state of sleep, then I stand during my sleep, and then I wake up and strengthen myself with sleep like I strengthen myself with my standing.'

Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Musa and Muʿadh bin Jabal to Yemen. He sent each of them to administer a province as Yemen consisted of two provinces. The Prophet ﷺ said (to them), "Facilitate things for the people and do not make things difficult for them (Be kind and lenient (both of you) with the people, and do not be hard on them) and give the people good tidings and do not repulse them. So each of them went to carry on his job. So when any one of them toured his province and happened to come near (the border of the province of) his companion, he would visit him and greet him. Once Muʿadh toured that part of his state which was near (the border of the province of) his companion Abu Musa. Muʿadh came riding his mule till he reached Abu Musa and saw him sitting, and the people had gathered around him. Behold! There was a man tied with his hands behind his neck. Muʿadh said to Abu Musa, "O ʿAbdullah bin Qais! What is this?" Abu Musa replied. "This man has reverted to Heathenism after embracing Islam." Muʿadh said, "I will not dismount till he is killed." Abu Musa replied, "He has been brought for this purpose, so come down." Muʿadh said, "I will not dismount till he is killed." So Abu Musa ordered that he be killed, and he was killed. Then Muʿadh dismounted and said, "O ʿAbdullah (bin Qais)! How do you recite the Qur'an ?" Abu Musa said, "I recite the Qur'an regularly at intervals and piecemeal. How do you recite it O Muʿadh?" Muʿadh said, "I sleep in the first part of the night and then get up after having slept for the time devoted for my sleep and then recite as much as Allah has written for me. So I seek Allah's Reward for both my sleep as well as my prayer (at night).
