عَلَى نَفَرٍ فَتَخَلَّلْتُهُمْ فَإِذَا عَلِيٌّ وَالزُّبَيْرُ وَطَلْحَةُ وَسَعْدٌ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ بِأَسْرَعَ مِنْ أَنْ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ يَمْشِي فِي الْمَسْجِدِ عَلَيْهِ مُلَاءَتَانِ أَوْ مُلَاءَةٌ صُفْرٌ قَدْ رَفَعَهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ فَقُلْتُ لِصَاحِبِي كَمَا أَنْتَ حَتَّى أَنْظُرَ مَا جَاءَ بِهِ فَلَمَّا دَنَا مِنْهُمْ قِيلَ هَذَا ابْنُ عَفَّانَ فَقَالَ أَهَاهُنَا عَلِيٌّ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَهَاهُنَا طَلْحَةُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَهَاهُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَهَاهُنَا سَعْدٌ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهُ بِعِشْرِينَ أَوْ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهُ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَوْ قَالَ اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ فَقَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ يَوْمَ جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ فَقَالَ مَنْ جَهَّزَ هَؤُلَاءِ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ خِطَامًا وَلَا عِقَالًا قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدِ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الْأَحْنَفِ إِلَّا ابْنُ جَاوَانَ وَقَدِ اخْتَلَفُوا فِي اسْمِهِ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى عَنِ ابْنِ جَاوَانَ إِلَّا حُصَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ

I looked and found the people gathered, and in the midst of them was a group; there I saw 'Ali bin Abi Talib, Az-Zubair, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah have mercy on them. When I got there, it was said that 'Uthman bin 'Affan had come. He came, wearing a yellowish cloak. I said to my companion: Stay where you are until I find out what is happening. 'Uthman said: Is 'Ali here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Talhah here? Is Sa'd here? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the Mirbad of Banu so and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it, then I came to the Messenger of Allah and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I have bought the well of Rumah. He said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours? They said: Yes. He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever equips the army of Al-'Usrah (i.e. Tabuk), Allah will forgive him, so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' They said: Yes. He said: O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness."

"We set out for Hajj, and came to Al-Madinah intending to perform Hajj. While we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said: 'The people have gathered in the Masjid and there is panic.' So we set out and found the people gathered around a group in the middle of the Masjid, among whom were 'Ali, Az-Zubair, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. While we were like that, 'Uthman came, wearing a yellowish cloak with which he had covered his head. He said: Is 'Ali here? Is Talhah here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Sa'd here? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the Mirbad of Banu so and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it for twenty or twenty-five thousand, then I came to the Messenger of Allah and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours? They said: By Allah, yes. He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I bought it for such and such an amount, then I came to the Messenger of Allah and told him, and he said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: By Allah, yes. He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever equips these (men), Allah will forgive him, -meaning the army of Al-'Usrah (i.e. Tabuk)- so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' خَرَجْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَنَحْنُ نُرِيدُ الْحَجَّ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ فِي مَنَازِلِنَا نَضَعُ رِحَالَنَا إِذْ أَتَانَا آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدِ اجْتَمَعُوا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَفَزِعُوا فَانْطَلَقْنَا فَإِذَا النَّاسُ مُجْتَمِعُونَ عَلَى نَفَرٍ فِي وَسَطِ الْمَسْجِدِ وَفِيهِمْ عَلِيٌّ وَالزُّبَيْرُ وَطَلْحَةُ وَسَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ فَإِنَّا لَكَذَلِكَ إِذْ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ عَلَيْهِ مُلاَءَةٌ صَفْرَاءُ قَدْ قَنَّعَ بِهَا رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ أَهَا هُنَا طَلْحَةُ أَهَا هُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ أَهَا هُنَا سَعْدٌ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلاَنٍ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهُ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا أَوْ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنِ ابْتَاعَ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يُجَهِّزْ هَؤُلاَءِ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ يَعْنِي جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى لَمْ يَفْقِدُوا عِقَالاً وَلاَ خِطَامًا فَقَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدِ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدِ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ
We met 'Abdullah bin 'Umar and discussed the divine decree (al qadar) and what others said concerning it. He said: When you go back to them, say; Ibn ‘Umar has nothing to do with you and you have nothing to do with him - three times. Then he said: ‘Umar bin al Khattab ؓ told me that whilst they were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ , a man came to him walking, with a handsome face and hair, wearing white clothes. The people looked at one another (as if to say): We do not know this man and he does not look like a traveller. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , shall I come to you? He said: ʿYes.ʿ So he came and put his knees against his knees and his hands on his thighs and said: What is Islam? He said: ʿTo testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , to establish regular prayer, to give zakah, to fast Ramadan and to go on pilgrimage to the House.ʿ He said: What is faith (eeman)? He said: “To believe in Allah, His angels, Paradise and Hell, resurrection after death and the divine decree, all of it.” He said: What is ihsan? He said: ʿTo strive for the sake of Allah as if you see Him, and even though you do not see Him, He sees you.ʿ He said: When will the Hour come? He said: ʿThe one who is asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking.” He said: What are its portents? He said: ʿWhen the destitute, barefoot, naked shepherds compete in constructing lofty buildings, and the slave women give birth to their masters.” Then he said: ʿCall the man to me.” They looked for him but they saw no trace of him. Two or three days passed, then he said: “O Ibn al Khattab, do you know who that was who asked about such and such?” He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: ʿThat was Jibreel who came to teach you your religion.ʿ A man from Juhainah or Muzainah asked him: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , what are we striving for? Is it something that is already decided or is it something that is evolving right now? He said:ʿFor some-thing that is already decided.ʿ The man or one of the people said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , then why should we strive? He said: “The people of Paradise will be enabled to do the deeds of the people of Paradise and the people of Hell will be enabled to do the deeds of the people of Hell.ʿ Yahya said: And that is how it is.
أَخْبَرَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّهُمْ بَيْنمَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ أَوْ قُعُودٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي حَسَنُ الْوَجْهِ حَسَنُ الشَّعْرِ عَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُ بَيَاضٍ فَنَظَرَ الْقَوْمُ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ مَا نَعْرِفُ هَذَا وَمَا هَذَا بِصَاحِبِ سَفَرٍثُمَّ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ آتِيكَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَجَاءَ فَوَضَعَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ عِنْدَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَيَدَيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا الْإِسْلامُ؟ قَالَ شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ وَتُقِيمُ الصَّلاةَ وَتُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجُّ الْبَيْتَ قَالَ فَمَا الْإِيمَانُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللهِ وَمَلائِكَتِهِ وَالْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ وَالْبَعْثِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ وَالْقَدَرِ كُلِّهِ قَالَ فَمَا الْإِحْسَانُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَعْمَلَ لِلَّهِ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ قَالَ فَمَتَى السَّاعَةُ؟ قَالَ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ قَالَ فَمَا أَشْرَاطُهَا؟ قَالَ إِذَا الْعُرَاةُ الْحُفَاةُ الْعَالَةُ رِعَاءُ الشَّاءِ تَطَاوَلُوا فِي الْبُنْيَانِ وَوَلَدَتِ الْإِمَاءُ أَرْبَابَهُنَّ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلَيَّ الرَّجُلَ فَطَلَبُوهُ فَلَمْ يَرَوْا شَيْئًا فَمَكَثَ يَوْمَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاثَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ أَتَدْرِي مَنِ السَّائِلُ عَنْ كَذَا وَكَذَا؟ قَالَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ ذَاكَ جِبْرِيلُ جَاءَكُمْ يُعَلِّمُكُمْ دِينَكُمْ قَالَ وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ أَوْ من مُزَيْنَةَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فِيمَ نَعْمَلُ أَفِي شَيْءٍ قَدْ خَلا أَوْ مَضَى أَوْ فِي شَيْءٍ يُسْتَأْنَفُ الْآنَ؟ قَالَ فِي شَيْءٍ قَدْ خَلا أَوْ مَضَى فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَوْ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فِيمَ نَعْمَلُ؟ قَالَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ يُيَسَّرُونَ لِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ يُيَسَّرُونَ لِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ قَالَ يَحْيَى قَالَ هُوَ كَذَا
We set out for Hajj, and passed by Madinah. Whilst we were in our camp, someone came to us and said: The people are in a panic in the mosque. My companion and I set out, and we found some people gathered around a group in the mosque. I pushed through them until I got to (that group), where I found ʿ Ali bin Abi Talib, Az-Zubair, Talhah and Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas. Soon ‘Uthman came walking and said: Is ʿAli here? They said: Yes. He said: ls Az-Zubair here? They said: Yes. He said: ls Talhah here? They said: Yes. He said: ls Saʿd here? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is no other god, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever buys the date-drying place of (the tribe of) Banu so- and-so, Allah will forgive him.” so I bought it and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I have bought it; he said: ʿAdd it to our mosque and the reward for that will be yours”? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is no other god, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Who will buy the well of Roomah?ʿ so I bought it for such and such and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I have bought it - meaning the well of Roomah, and he said: ʿMake it a water source for the Muslims and the reward for that will be yoursʿ? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is no other god, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the faces of the people on the day of the army of hardship (Tabook) and said: “Whoever equips these men, Allah will forgive him,” so I equipped them until they were not without even reins or ropes? They said: By Allah, yes. He said: O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness; O Allah, bear witness. Then he left
قَالَقَالَ الْأَحْنَفُ انْطَلَقْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَمَرَرْنَا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ فِي مَنْزِلِنَا إِذْ جَاءَنَا آتٍ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ مِنْ فَزَعٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبِي فَإِذَا النَّاسُ مُجْتَمِعُونَ عَلَى نَفَرٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ فَتَخَلَّلْتُهُمْ حَتَّى قُمْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَإِذَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالزُّبَيْرُ وَطَلْحَةُ وَسَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ ذَلِكَ بِأَسْرَعَ مِنْ أَنْ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ يَمْشِي فَقَالَ أَهَاهُنَا عَلِيٌّ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَهَاهُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَهَاهُنَا طَلْحَةُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَهَاهُنَا سَعْدٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْقَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلانٍ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهُ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْقَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ؟ فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهَا يَعْنِي بِئْرَ رُومَةَ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْقَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ يَوْمَ جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يُجَهِّزُ هَؤُلاءِ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ خِطَامًا وَلا عِقَالًا؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ
[Machine] The horses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, or he said, the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, and I was near a scorpion, so they took my aunt and some people. They brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he ordered them to line up for him. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, the newcomer went away and the baby is gone, and I am an old woman with no one to serve me. So who will show me kindness, as God has shown kindness to you?" He asked her, "Who is your neighbor?" She said, "Adi ibn Hatim." He said, "The one who has run away from God and His Messenger?" She said, "So who will show me kindness?" He said, "When he returned, a man came to him, and we could see that it was Ali. He said, 'Put her on a camel and he asked her.' So she went to him and said, 'You have done something that your father used to do.' He said, 'Did you visit him willingly or as a monastic?' She said, 'Such and such person came to him and got something from him, and such and such person came to him and got something from him.' He said, 'So I came to him, and there was a woman and children with him.' They mentioned their relationship to the Prophet ﷺ , so I knew that he did not have the dominion of Khusra or Caesar. He asked him, 'O Adi ibn Hatim, what has prevented you from saying there is no god but Allah? Is there any god but Allah? What has prevented you from saying Allah is the Greatest? Is there anything greater than Allah?' She said, 'So I have submitted and I saw his face light up, and he said, 'Indeed, the Jews are the ones who have earned wrath, and the Christians are the ones who have gone astray.' Then they asked him to praise Allah, and he praised Him and said, 'As for what follows, you people should submit yourself and lower yourselves from pride, as a person submits with a sa' of dates to another person with a handful of dates. Shu'bah said, 'My most knowledgeable opinion is that he said it is one date with a part of a date.' And verily, one of you will meet Allah, and yet he will say, 'What should I say?' Didn't I make you hearing and seeing? Didn't I give you wealth and children? What did you prepare?' So he will look in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, and he will not find anything. So the fire will not touch anyone except with his face. So fear the fire, even with a part of a date. And if you do not find that, then with a gentle word. Indeed, I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah will support you and give you victory, or He will open for you until the camels can walk between Al-Hirah and Yathrib. Indeed, what the thieving fears most is the loss of her property.' Muhammad ibn Ja'far said, 'I heard this from Shu'bah, and I recited it to him.'"
جَاءَتْ خَيْلُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ قَالَ رُسُلُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا بِعَقْرَبٍ فَأَخَذُوا عَمَّتِي وَنَاسًا قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَتَوْا بِهِمْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَصَفُّوا لَهُ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ نَأَى الْوَافِدُ وَانْقَطَعَ الْوَلَدُ وَأَنَا عَجُوزٌ كَبِيرَةٌ مَا بِي مِنْ خِدْمَةٍ فَمُنَّ عَلَيَّ مَنَّ اللهُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ مَنْ وَافِدُكِ؟ قَالَتْ عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ قَالَ الَّذِي فَرَّ مِنَ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ؟ قَالَتْ فَمَنَّ عَلَيَّ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ وَرَجُلٌ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ نَرَى أَنَّهُ عَلِيٌّ قَالَ سَلِيهِ حِمْلَانًا قَالَ فَسَأَلَتْهُ فَأَمَرَ لَهَا قَالَتْ فَأَتَانِي فَقَالَتْ لَقَدْ فَعَلْتَ فَعْلَةً مَا كَانَ أَبُوكَ يَفْعَلُهَا قَالَتْائْتِهِ رَاغِبًا أَوْ رَاهِبًا فَقَدْ أَتَاهُ فُلَانٌ فَأَصَابَ مِنْهُ وَأَتَاهُ فُلَانٌ فَأَصَابَ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَإِذَا عِنْدَهُ امْرَأَةٌ وَصِبْيَانٌ أَوْ صَبِيٌّ فَذَكَرَ قُرْبَهُمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مُلْكُ كِسْرَى وَلَا قَيْصَرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا عَدِيُّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ مَا أَفَرَّكَ أَنْ يُقَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ فَهَلْ مِنْ إِلَهٍ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ مَا أَفَرَّكَ أَنْ يُقَالَ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ؟ فَهَلْ شَيْءٌ هُوَ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ اللهِ ﷻ؟ قَالَ فَأَسْلَمْتُ فَرَأَيْتُ وَجْهَهُ اسْتَبْشَرَ وَقَالَ إِنَّ الْمَغْضُوبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْيَهُودُ وإنَّ الضَّالِّينَ النَّصَارَى ثُمَّ سَأَلُوهُ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ تَعَالَى وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَلَكُمْ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنْ تَرْتَضِخُوا مِنَ الْفَضْلِ ارْتَضَخَ امْرُؤٌ بِصَاعٍ بِبَعْضِ صَاعٍ بِقَبْضَةٍ بِبَعْضِ قَبْضَةٍ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَكْثَرُ عِلْمِي أَنَّهُ قَالَ بِتَمْرَةٍ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَاقِي اللهَ ﷻ فَقَائِلٌ مَا أَقُولُ أَلَمْ أَجْعَلْكَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا؟ أَلَمْ أَجْعَلْ لَكَ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا؟ فَمَاذَا قَدَّمْتَ؟ فَيَنْظُرُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ وَعَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ فَلَا يَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَمَا يَتَّقِي النَّارَ إِلَّا بِوَجْهِهِ فَاتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوهُ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ لَيِّنَةٍ إِنِّي لَا أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمُ الْفَاقَةَ لَيَنْصُرَنَّكُمُ اللهُ تَعَالَى وَلَيُعْطِيَنَّكُمْ أَوْ لَيَفْتَحَنَّ لَكُمْ حَتَّى تَسِيرَ الظَّعِينَةُ بَيْنَ الْحِيرَةِ ويَثْرِبَ إِنَّ أَكْثَرَ مَا تَخَافُ السَّرَقَ عَلَى ظَعِينَتِهَا قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَاهُ شُعْبَةُ مَا لَا أُحْصِيهِ وَقَرَأْتُهُ عَلَيْهِ
ذِكْرُ مَغْفِرَةِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلَا لِعُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ ؓ ، بِتَسْبِيلِهِ رُومَةَ
"We set out as pilgrims and came to Al-Madinah intending to perform Hajj. While we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said: 'The people have gathered in the Masjid and there is panis.' So we set out and found the people gathered around a group in the middle of the Masjid, among whom were 'Ali, Zubayr, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqas. While we were like that, 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, came, wearing a yellow cloak with which he had covered his head. He said: 'Is Talhah here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Sa'd here?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I adjure you be the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, din't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever buys the Mirbad [1] of Banu so-and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it for twenty or twenty-five thousand, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I bought it for such and such and amount, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever equips these (men)- meaning the army of Al-'Usrah (Tabuk) - Allah will forgive him, so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness.'" [1] Mirbad: A place for drying dates. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3182)
قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ فَجَاءَ عُثْمَانُ فَقِيلَ هَذَا عُثْمَانُ وَعَلَيْهِ مُلَيَّةٌ لَهُ صَفْرَاءُ قَدْ قَنَّعَ بِهَا رَأْسَهُ قَالَ هَا هُنَا عَلِيٌّ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ هَا هُنَا طَلْحَةُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنِ ابْتَاعَ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهُ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا أَوْ خَمْسَةً وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا» فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهُ فَقَالَ «اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ»؟ قَالَ فَقَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ» فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهَا فَقَالَ «اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ»؟ قَالَ فَقَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ «مَنْ جَهَّزَ هَؤُلَاءِ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ» يَعْنِي جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى لَمْ يَفْقِدُوا عِقَالًا وَلَا خِطَامًا؟ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ ثَلَاثًا
"I came to Al-Madinah, and I was performing Hajj, and while we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said: 'The people have gathered in the Masjid.' I looked and found the people gathered, and in the midst of them was a group; there I saw 'Ali bin Abi Talib, Az-Zubair, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah have mercy on them. When I got there, it was said that 'Uthman bin 'Affan had come. He came, wearing a yellowish cloak. I said to my companion: Stay where you are until I find out what is happening. 'Uthman said: Is 'Ali here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Talhah here? Is Sa'd here? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the Mirbad of Banu so and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it, then I came to the Messenger of Allah and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I have bought the well of Rumah. He said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours? They said: Yes. He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever equips the army of Al-'Usrah (i.e. Tabuk), Allah will forgive him, so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' سَمِعْتُ الْأَحْنَفَ يَقُولُ أَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ وَأَنَا حَاجٌّ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ فِي مَنَازِلِنَا نَضَعُ رِحَالَنَا إِذْ أَتَانَا آتٍ فَقَالَ قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ النَّاسُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَإِذَا النَّاسُ مُجْتَمِعُونَ وَإِذَا بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِهِمْ نَفَرٌ قُعُودٌ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالزُّبَيْرُ وَطَلْحَةُ وَسَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ فَقُمْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ قِيلَ هَذَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ قَدْ جَاءَ قَالَ فَجَاءَ وَعَلَيْهِ مُلَيَّةٌ صَفْرَاءُ قُلْتُ لِصَاحِبِي كَمَا أَنْتَ حَتَّى أَنْظُرَ مَا جَاءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ أَهَاهُنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ؟ أَهَاهُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ؟ أَهَاهُنَا طَلْحَةُ؟ أَهَاهُنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ» فَابْتَعْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي ابْتَعْتُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ قَالَ «فَاجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ»؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَأَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ» فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ قَدِ ابْتَعْتُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ قَالَ «فَاجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ»؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ يُجَهِّزْ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ» فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ عِقَالًا وَلَا خِطَامًا؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ
"We set out as pilgrims and came to Al-Madinah intending to perform Hajj. While we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said: 'The people have gathered in the Masjid and there is panis.' So we set out and found the people gathered around a group in the middle of the Masjid, among whom were 'Ali, Zubayr, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqas. While we were like that, 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, came, wearing a yellow cloak with which he had covered his head. He said: 'Is Talhah here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Sa'd here?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I adjure you be the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, din't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever buys the Mirbad [1] of Banu so-and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it for twenty or twenty-five thousand, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I bought it for such and such and amount, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever equips these (men)- meaning the army of Al-'Usrah (Tabuk) - Allah will forgive him, so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness.'" [1] Mirbad: A place for drying dates. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3182)
خَرَجْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَنَحْنُ نُرِيدُ الْحَجَّ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ فِي مَنَازِلِنَا نَضَعُ رِحَالَنَا إِذْ أَتَانَا آتٍ قَالَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدِ اجْتَمَعُوا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَفَزِعُوا فَانْطَلَقْنَا وَإِذَا النَّاسُ مُجْتَمِعُونَ عَلَى نَفَرٍ فِي وَسَطِ الْمَسْجِدِ وَإِذَا عَلِيٌّ وَالزُّبَيْرُ وَطَلْحَةُ وَسَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ فَإِنَّا لَكَذَلِكَ إِذْ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ عَلَيْهِ مُلَاءٌ صَفْرَاءُ قَدْ قَنَّعَ بِهَا رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ هَاهُنَا عَلِيٌّ؟ أَهَاهُنَا طَلْحَةُ أَهَاهُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ؟ أَهَاهُنَا سَعْدٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ» فَابْتَعْتُهُ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا أَوْ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ «اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ»؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ» فَابْتَعْتُهُ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ قَدِ ابْتَعْتَهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ «اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ»؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ مَنْ جَهَّزَ هَؤُلَاءِ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ يَعْنِي جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى لَمْ يَفْقِدُوا عِقَالًا وَلَا خِطَامًا؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever buys the mare of Bani Fulan, Allah will forgive him." So I bought it. I thought that he said for twenty or twenty-five thousand. So I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I have bought it." He said, "Place it in our mosque and its reward is for you." They said, "Yes." He said, "I adjure you by Allah, besides whom there is no deity, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him.'" So I bought it for such and such price. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Indeed, I bought the well of Rumah." He said, "Make it a source of water for the Muslims and its reward is for you." They said, "Yes." He said, "I adjure you by Allah, besides whom there is no deity, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the faces of the people on the day of the Battle of Uhud and said, 'Who will equip these people?' Allah will forgive him." So I equipped them until they did not lose a noseband or a rein." They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah, bear witness; O Allah, bear witness; O Allah, bear witness." And he mentioned the hadith.
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهُ قَالَ أَحْسِبُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ بِعِشْرِينَ أَوْ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهُ قَالَ اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ نَشَدْتُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي ابْتَعْتُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ قَالَ اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ نَشَدْتُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ يَوْمَ جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يُجَهِّزُ هَؤُلَاءِ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ خِطَامًا وَلَا عِقَالًا؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمُ اشْهَدِ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدِ اللهُمُ اشْهَدْ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ
مَعَهُ النَّبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي أَشْيَاخٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَلَمَّا أَشْرَفُوا عَلَى الرَّاهِبِ هَبَطُوا فَخَلَّفُوا رِحَالَهُمْ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمُ الرَّاهِبُ وَكَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ يَمُرُّونَ بِهِ فَلَا يَخْرُجُ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتُ إِلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ فَجَاءَ فَجَعَلَ يَتَخَلَّلُهُمْ حَتَّى جَاءَ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ هَذَا سَيِّدُ الْعَالَمِينَ هَذَا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ هَذَا ابْتَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْأَشْيَاخُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ مَا عِلْمُكَ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ حِينَ أَشْرَفْتُمْ مِنَ الْعَقَبَةِ لَمْ تَبْقَ شَجَرَةٌ وَلَا حَجَرٌ إِلَّا سَجَدَ وَلَا يَسْجُدُ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا لِنَبِيٍّ وَإِنِّي أَعْرِفُهُ بِخَاتَمِ النُّبُوَّةِ أَسْفَلَ عَنْ غُضْرُوفِ كَتِفِهِ مِثْلَ التُّفَّاحَةِ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَصَنَعَ لَهُمْ طَعَامًا فَلَمَّا أَتَاهُمْ بِهِ قَالَ أَرْسِلُوا إِلَيْهِ وَكَانَ فِي رَعِيَّةِ الْإِبِلِ فَأَقْبَلَ وَعَلَيْهِ غَمَامَةٌ تُظِلُّهُ فَلَمَّا دَنَا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَجَدَهُمْ قَدْ سَبَقُوهُ إِلَى فَيْءِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَلَمَّا جَلَسَ مَالَ فَيْءُ الشَّجَرَةِ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ انْظُرُوا مَالَ فَيْءُ الشَّجَرَةِ عَلَيْهِ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُنَاشِدُهُمْ أَلَّا تَذْهَبُوا بِهِ إِلَى الرُّومِ فَإِنَّ الرُّومَ إِنْ رَأَوْهُ عَرَفُوهُ بِالصِّفَةِ فَقَتَلُوهُ قَالَ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِتِسْعِ فَوَارِسَ قَدْ أَقْبَلُوا مِنَ الرُّومِ فَاسْتَقْبَلَهُمْ فَقَالَ مَا جَاءَ بِكُمْ قَالُوا جِئْنَا إِلَى هَذَا النَّبِيِّ الَّذِي هُوَ خَارِجٌ فِي هَذَا الشَّهْرِ وَلَمْ يَبْقَ طَرِيقٌ إِلَّا وَقَدْ بُعِثَ إِلَيْهِ أُنَاسٌ وَإِنَّا قَدْ أُخْبِرْنَا خَبَرَهُ فَبُعِثْنَا إِلَى طَرِيقِكَ هَذَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ هَلْ خَلْفَكُمْ أَحَدٌ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّمَا اخْتَارَنَا خِيرَةً لِطَرِيقِكَ هَذَا قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ أَمْرًا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَنْ يَقْضِيَهُ هَلْ يَسْتَطِيعُ أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ رَدَّهُ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَارْجِعُوا قَالَ فَتَابَعُوهُ وَرَجَعُوا قَالَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ فَقَالَ أُنْشِدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ أَيُّكُمْ وَلِيُّهُ قَالُوا أَبُو طَالِبٍ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُنَاشِدُهُ أَنْ يَرُدَّهُ حَتَّى رَدَّهُ أَبُو طَالِبٍ وَبَعَثَ مَعَهُ مَنْ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ إِلَّا يُونُسُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ وَلَا عَنْ يُونُسَ إِلَّا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ غَزْوَانَ الْمَعْرُوفُ بِقُرَادٍ
" عَن الأَحْنَفِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ: انْطَلَقْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَمَرَرْنَا بِالمَدِينَةِ فَدَخَلْنَا الْمَسْجِدَ، فَإِذَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ أبِى طَالِبٍ وَالزُّبيْرُ وَطَلحَةُ وَسَعْدُ بْنُ أبِى وَقَّاصٍ، فَلَمْ يَكُنْ بِأسْرعَ مِنْ (أنْ جَاءَ) عُثْمَانُ عَلَيْهِ مِلاَءَةٌ صَفْرَاءُ قَدْ قَنَّعَ بِهَا رَأسَهُ فَقَالَ: أَهَاهُنَا عَلِيٌّ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَاَل: أَهَاهُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أهَاهُنَا طَلْحَةُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ قَالَ: أهَاهُنَا سَعْدٌ؟ قَالُوا: نَعْمْ، قَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِالله الَّذِى لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ أتَعْلَمُون أنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ قَالَ: مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مَرْبدَ بَنِى فُلاَنٍ غَفَرَ الله لَه، فَابْتَعْتُهُ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا أوْ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعشْرِين ألْفًا، فَأتَيْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ فَقُلتُ: إِنِّى قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهُ فَقَالَ: اجْعَلهُ فىِ مَسْجِدِنَا وَأجْرُهُ لَكَ، قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أنْشُدُكُمْ بِالله الَّذِى لاَ إِلَهَ إلاَّ هُوَ أتَعْلَمُونَ أن رَسُولَ الله ﷺ قَالَ: مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ الله لَهُ؟ فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا، فَأتَيْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ فَقُلتُ: إِنِّى قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهَا، فَقَالَ:
اجْعَلهَا سِقَايَةً لِلمُسْلِمِينَ وَأجْرُهَا لَكَ، قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَنْشدُكُمْ بالله الَّذِى لَا إلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ أتَعْلَمُونَ أنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ نَظَرَ فِى وجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ يَوْمَ جَيْشِ الْعُسرةِ فَقَالَ: مَنْ يُجَهِّز هَؤُلَاءِ غَفَرَ الله لَهُ، فَجَهَّزْتُهمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ خِطَامًا وَلَا عِقَالًا، قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: اللَّهُمَ اشْهَدْ (اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ) ثم انْصَرَفَ".
" عن عَبدِ المَلكِ بنِ هَارونَ بنِ عَنْتَرةَ عَن أَبيه، عَنْ جَدِّه قَال: دَخَلَ مُحمَّدُ ابْن أبى بَكْرٍ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَقَالَ لَه عُثمْانُ: يَا بنَ أخِى أَنْشُدُكَ بالله هَلْ تَعلَمَ أَنَّ النَبىَّ ﷺ زَوَّجَنِى ابْنَتَيهِ إحْداهما بَعْد الأُخرَى؟ ثم قال: ألاَ أَبَا أيِّمٍ، ألاَ أخا أيِّمٍ يزَوِّجها عُثمان؟ فَلَو كَان عِنْدنَا شَئ زَوجْنَاه، وَتَركْتُ بَيْعَة الرِّضوانِ، فَبَايَع لي رسول اللهِ ﷺ بِيَديْه إحدَاهُمَا عَلَى الأخْرى وقَالَ: هَذه لي وَهذه لعُثمانَ، فَكانَتْ يَدُ رَسول اللهِ ﷺ أَطهرَ وَأطيَبَ مِن يَدِى؟ قَالَ: نَعَم، قَاَل: فَأَنْشُدُكَ باللهِ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُ أنَّ رسولَ الله ﷺ قالَ: مَن يَشْتَرِى هَذَا النَّخْل فيقوم بهِ قِبْلَةَ المسجد وَضَمن لَه رسولُ الله ﷺ نخْلَةً في الجنَّة؟ قَال: نَعَمْ، قَال: فَأَنُشُدكَ باللهِ هَلْ تَعْلَم أنَّ المُسلمين جَاعُوا جُوعًا شَديدًا فَجئتُ بالأنْطَاعِ فبسطتها، ثمَّ صبَبْتُ عَليْهَا الحُوَّارِىَّ، ثمّ جئتُ بالسَّمن والعَسَلِ فَخلطتهُ به، وَكان أَول
خَبِيصٍ أكَلُوا في الإِسلاَمِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَال: فَأنْشُدُكَ بالله هَلْ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ المُسلمِينَ ظَمِئُوا ظَمأ شَديدًا فَاحْتَفَرْتُ بئرًا فأعظمتُ النَّفَقَةَ ثمَّ تَصدقت بها عَلىَ المسلمين، الضعيف فِيهاَ والقَوِىُّ سَوَاء؟ قال: نَعمَ، فأنشدُكَ باللهِ هَل تَعْلَم أَن المِيرَة انْقَطَعتْ عَن المَدِينة حتَّى جَاعَ النَّاسُ، فَخَرَجْتُ إلى بَقِيع الغَرْقَدِ فَوجَدْت خمْسَة عَشَر رَاحلَة عَلَيْها طعامٌ فاشتريتها وَحَبَستُ منها ثلاثةً، وأتيتُ رسول الله ﷺ باثْنَتَىْ عَشْرَةَ رَاحلَةً، فدعا لى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ فقَالَ: بَارَك الله لَك فيما أَعْطَيتَ، وَبَارك لَك فَيما أَمْسكْتَ؟ قَال: نَعْم، قَال: فَأَنْشُدُك باللهِ هل تَعْلَمُ أَنّى أتيْتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ بَأَلف أَصْفَر فَصَبَبْتُها في حجرِ رسولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلتُ: اسْتَعن بِها، فقَال رسولُ الله ﷺ : " مَا ضَرَّ عثمانَ مَا عَمِلَ بَعد اليَومِ " قَالَ: نَعْم، قال: فَأنْشُدكَ بالله هَلْ تَعَلَمُ أنى كُنْتُ مَع رسول الله ﷺ على جَبَلِ حِراءَ فَرَجَفَ بِنَا، فَضَربَهُ النَّبِى ﷺ بِقَدَمِه فَقالَ أُسْكُن حرَاءُ فإنَّه ليسَ عليكَ إلاَّ نَبِى أَو صِدِّيقٌ أَوْ شَهِيدٌ، وَعَلى الجَبَلِ يَوْمَئذ رَسولُ اللهِ ﷺ وأبو بَكرَ وَعُمَر، وَعُثمانُ، وَعلِىٌّ، وَطَلحَةُ، والزُّبيْرُ، قَالَ: نَعم ".
