[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to Kisra, Qaysar, and Ukaydirah, inviting them to Allah, the Most High."
«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَتَبَ إِلَى كِسْرَى وَقَيْصَرَ وَأُكَيْدِرَ دُومَةَ يَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى»

ذِكْرُ وَصْفِ كُتُبِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ
Abu Sufyan narrated to me personally, saying, "I set out during the Truce that had been concluded between me and Messenger of Allah ﷺ. While I was in Sham, a letter sent by the Prophet ﷺ was brought to Heraclius. Dihya Al-Kalbi had brought and given it to the governor of Busra, and the latter forwarded it to Heraclius. Heraclius said, 'Is there anyone from the people of this man who claims to be a prophet?' The people replied, 'Yes.' So I along with some of Quraishi men were called and we entered upon Heraclius, and we were seated in front of him. Then he said, 'Who amongst you is the nearest relative to the man who claims to be a prophet?' So they made me sit in front of him and made my companions sit behind me. Then he called upon his translator and said (to him). 'Tell them ( i.e. Abu Sufyan's companions) that I am going to ask him (i.e. Abu Sufyan) regarding that man who claims to be a prophet. So, if he tell me a lie, they should contradict him (instantly).' By Allah, had I not been afraid that my companions would consider me a liar, I would have told lies. Heraclius then said to his translator, 'Ask him: What is his (i.e. the Prophet's) family status amongst you? I said, 'He belongs to a noble family amongst us." Heraclius said, 'Was any of his ancestors a king?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Did you ever accuse him of telling lies before his saying what he has said?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Do the nobles follow him or the poor people?' I said, 'It is the poor who followed him.' He said, 'Is the number of his follower increasing or decreasing?' I said, 'The are increasing.' He said, 'Does anyone renounce his religion (i.e. Islam) after embracing it, being displeased with it?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Did you fight with him?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'How was your fighting with him?' I said, 'The fighting between us was undecided and victory was shared by him and us by turns. He inflicts casualties upon us and we inflict casualties upon him.' He said, 'Did he ever betray?' I said, 'No, but now we are away from him in this truce and we do not know what he will do in it" Abu Sufyan added, "By Allah, I was not able to insert in my speech a word (against him) except that. Heraclius said, 'Did anybody else (amongst you) ever claimed the same (i.e. Islam) before him? I said, 'No.' Then Heraclius told his translator to tell me (i.e. Abu Sufyan), 'I asked you about his family status amongst you, and you told me that he comes from a noble family amongst you Verily, all Apostles come from the noblest family among their people. Then I asked you whether any of his ancestors was a king, and you denied that. Thereupon I thought that had one of his fore-fathers been a king, I would have said that he (i.e. Muhammad) was seeking to rule the kingdom of his fore-fathers. Then I asked you regarding his followers, whether they were the noble or the poor among the people, and you said that they were only the poor (who follow him). In fact, such are the followers of the Apostles. Then I asked you whether you have ever accused him of telling lies before saying what he said, and your reply was in the negative. Therefore, I took for granted that a man who did not tell a lie about others, could ever tell a lie about Allah. Then I asked you whether anyone of his followers had renounced his religion (i.e. Islam) after embracing it, being displeased with it, and you denied that. And such is Faith when it mixes with the cheerfulness of the hearts. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You claimed that they were increasing. That is the way of true faith till it is complete. Then I asked you whether you had ever fought with him, and you claimed that you had fought with him and the battle between you and him was undecided and the victory was shared by you and him in turns; he inflicted casual ties upon you and you inflicted casualties upon them. Such is the case with the Apostles; they are out to test and the final victory is for them. Then I asked you whether he had ever betrayed; you claimed that he had never betrayed. I need, Apostles never betray. Then I asked you whether anyone had said this statement before him; and you denied that. Thereupon I thought if somebody had said that statement before him, then I would have said that he was but a man copying some sayings said before him." Abu Safyan said, "Heraclius then asked me, 'What does he order you to do?' I said, 'He orders us (to offer) prayers and (to pay) Zakat and to keep good relationship with the Kith and kin and to be chaste.' Then Heraclius said, 'If whatever you have said, is true, he is really a prophet, and I knew that he ( i.e. the Prophet ﷺ ) was going to appear, but I never thought that he would be from amongst you. If I were certain that I can reach him, I would like to meet him and if I were with him, I would wash his feet; and his kingdom will expand (surely to what is under my feet.' Then Heraclius asked for the letter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and read it wherein was written: "In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. This letter is) from Muhammad, Apostle of Allah, to Heraclius, the sovereign of Byzantine........ Peace be upon him who follows the Right Path. Now then, I call you to embrace Islam. Embrace Islam and you will be saved (from Allah's Punishment); embrace Islam, and Allah will give you a double reward, but if you reject this, you will be responsible for the sins of the tillers (i.e. the people of your kingdom) and (Allah's Statement):--"O the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Come to a word common to you and us that we worship None but Allah....bear witness that we are Muslims.' (3.64) When he finished reading the letter, voices grew louder near him and there was a great hue and cry, and we were ordered to go out." Abu Sufyan added, "While coming out, I said to my companions, 'The situation of Ibn Abu Kabsha (i.e. Muhammad) has become strong; even the king of Banu Al14 Asfar is afraid of him.' So I continued to believe that Messenger of Allah ﷺ would be victorious, till Allah made me embrace Islam." Az-Zuhri said, "Heraclius then invited all the chiefs of the Byzantines and had them assembled in his house and said, 'O group of Byzantines! Do you wish to have a permanent success and guidance and that your kingdom should remain with you?' (Immediately after hearing that), they rushed towards the gate like onagers, but they found them closed. Heraclius then said, 'Bring them back to me.' So he called them and said, 'I just wanted to test the strength of your adherence to your religion. Now I have observed of you that which I like.' Then the people fell in prostration before him and became pleased with him." (See Hadith No. 6,Vol 1) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4553)

[Machine] We were in Al-Mirbad when suddenly a man with disheveled hair in his hand a piece of parchment. We said to him, "Are you a man from the desert?" He replied, "Yes." We told him, "Give us this piece of parchment that you have in your hand." So, we took it and read what was written on it. It said, "From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to the Banu Zuhayr: Give one-fifth of the spoils and the share of the Prophet and Al-Saffi. And you are safe under the protection of Allah and His Messenger." We asked him, "Who wrote this for you?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ." We asked him, "Did you hear anything from him?" He said, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say, 'Fasting during the month of patience and three days from every month will remove the burning sensation from the chests.'" We said to him, "Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ?" He replied, "Do you not accuse me? By Allah, I will not tell you anything more." Then, he left.

Messenger of Allah, has there come upon you a day more terrible than the day of Uhud. He said: I have experienced from thy people and the hardest treatment I met from them was what I received from them on the day of ʿAqaba. I betook myself to Ibn ʿAbd Yalil b. ʿAbd Kulal with the purpose of inviting him to Islam, but he did not respond to me as I desired. So I departed with signs of (deep) distress on my face. I did not recover until I reached Qarn al-Thaʿalib. Where I raised my head, lo! near me was a cloud which had cast its shadow on me. I looked and lo! there was in it the angel Jibril who called out to me and said: God, the Honoured and Glorious, has heard what thy people have said to thee, and how they have reacted to thy call. And He has sent to thee the angel in charge of the mountains so that thou mayest order him what thou wishest (him to do) with regard to them. The angel in charge of the mountains (then) called out to me, greeted me and said: Muhammad, God has listened to what thy people have said to thee. I am the angel in charge of the mountains, and thy Lord has sent me to thee so that thou mayest order me what thou wishest. If thou wishest that I should bring together the two mountains that stand opposite to each other at the extremities of Mecca to crush them in between, (I would do that). But the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said to him: I rather hope that God will produce from their descendants such persons as will worship Allah, the One, and will not ascribe partners to Him. [Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the marketplace of Dhi Al-Majaz wearing a red robe, and he was saying, "O people, say there is no deity but Allah, and you will be successful." A man was following him, throwing stones at him, causing his back and heels to bleed, while saying, "O people, do not obey him, for he is a liar." I asked, "Who is this?" It was said, "He is the son of Abd Al-Muttalib." I then asked, "Who is the one who follows him and throws stones at him?" It was said, "He is Abd Al-Uzza, the father of Lahab." When Islam emerged, we left until we reached a place near Madinah, and we had with us a container of dates. While we were sitting, a man approached us wearing two white garments and greeted us, asking, "Where are the people coming from?" We said, "From Rabdah." He asked, "Do you sell this camel?" We said, "Yes." He asked, "For how much?" We replied, "For such and such amount of dates." He said, "I will take it." He took the camel and did not haggle with us. Then, he disappeared within the walls of Madinah, and we whispered to each other, wondering if he knew the value of our camel. The man with the container said, "Do not whisper among yourselves, for I saw the face of a man whom none of you could belittle. I have never seen anything resembling the moon on the night of a full moon as his face." Later that evening, a man approached us and greeted us, saying, "I am the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah, and he says, 'You may eat until you are satiated, and trade until you are content.'" We ate until we were full and traded until we were content. The next morning, we arrived at Madinah, and there stood the Messenger of Allah, delivering a sermon from the pulpit, saying, "The hand that gives is higher than the one that receives, and start with those you are responsible for, your mother and father, then your sister and brother, and then the closest ones." A man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, these are the sons of Tha'laba ibn Yarbua who killed so and so in the age of ignorance. Take our revenge from him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands up, and I saw the whiteness of his armpits as he said, "No, a mother cannot seek revenge for her child, no, a mother cannot seek revenge for her child."

The word of (Allah) Great and Glorious: 'And utter not thy prayer loudly, nor be low in it" (xvii. 110) was revealed as the Messenger of Allah (may peace beupon him) was hiding himself in Mecca. When he led his Companions in prayer he raised his voice (while reciting the) Qur'an. And when the polytheists heard that, they reviled the Qur'an and Him Who revealed it and him who brought it. Upon this Allah, the Exalted, said to His Apostle ﷺ: Utter not thy prayer so loudly that the polytheists may hear thy recitation and (recite it) not so low that it may be inaudible to your Companions. Make them hear the Qur'an, but do not recite it loudly and seek a (middle) way between these. Recite between loud and low tone. (Using translation from Muslim 446)

[Machine] Great among their great ones, they brought forth to me a man who spoke to me and whom I spoke to. So I said, "No one should come out to him besides me." I went out with my interpreter, and he came out with his interpreter until a pulpit was set up for us. Then he said, "Who are you?" So I said, "We are the Arabs, the people of thorns and acacia trees. We are the people of the Sacred House. We were the most restricted in land and the harshest in livelihood. We used to consume carrion and blood, and we would substitute one another in the most difficult form of livelihood that people ever lived by. Eventually, there came out among us a man who was not greater in rank that day, nor richer than us, and he said, 'I am the Messenger of Allah to you.' He commanded us with things we did not know and prohibited us from things we were accustomed to. Our fathers rejected him and opposed him, refuting his claim, until a people other than us came out to him and said, 'We believe in you and testify to your truthfulness. We will follow you and fight alongside you against those who fight against you.' So he went out to them, and we went out to him. We fought him, and he defeated us. Then he confronted those who followed us from the Arabs, and he fought them until he conquered them. If those behind me among the Arabs had known what awaits you in terms of livelihood, they would have come to you and shared your faith in the livelihood in which you live.'" So 'Umro ibn al-'As said, "I have never spoken to a more crafty person than him."

[Machine] I said, "I have never seen anything that afflicted the Quraysh as much as the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , in terms of the enmity they showed towards him." He replied, "I was there when their nobles gathered in the Hijr and they mentioned the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . They said, 'We have never seen anyone like this man who has tested our patience. He has mocked our dreams, insulted our fathers, criticized our religion, divided our community, and cursed our idols. We have endured great hardships because of him, or so they claim.' As they were talking, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , appeared and started walking until he reached the corner of the Kaaba. He passed by them and they made mocking gestures and whispered some remarks. I could see that on his face. Then he continued and when he passed by them for the second time, they made the same gestures and I noticed it on his face. Peace be upon him. Then he passed by them for the third time and they made the same gestures. Then he said, 'O people of Quraysh, do you hear me? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you for slaughtering.' His words silenced them, and every one of them looked as if a bird had struck their heads. Even the harshest of them trembled in his presence and answered him with the best of manners. Finally, he said, 'Go on, O Abu al-Qasim, go on with your business. By Allah, you are not ignorant.' So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , continued until the next morning. When they gathered in the Hijr and I was with them, some of them said to others, 'Do you remember what he told us and what we told him about their criticism of their gods and their religion?' He replied, 'Yes, I am the one who said that.' Then I saw one of them grabbing his garment and saying, while Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was standing beside him, crying, 'Do you kill a man just because he says his Lord is Allah?' Then they turned away from him. That was the most severe thing I have ever seen the Quraysh do to him."

Dimad came to Mecca and he belonged to the tribe of Azd Shanu'a, and he used to protect the person who was under the influence of charm. He heard the foolish people of Mecca say that Muhammad ﷺ was under the spell. Upon this he said: If 1 were to come across this man, Allah might cure him at my hand. He met him and said: Muhammad, I can protect (one) who is under the influence of charm, and Allah cures one whom He so desires at my hand. Do you desire (this)? Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, ask His help; and he whom Allah guides aright there is none to lead him astray, and he who is led astray there is none to guide him, and I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah, He is One, having no partner with Him, and that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger. Now after this he (Dimad) said: Repeat these words of yours before me, and the messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated these to him thrice; and he said I have heard the words of soothsayers and the words of magicians, and the words of poets, but I have never heard such words as yours, and they reach the depth (of the ocean of eloquence) ; bring forth your hand so that I should take oath of fealty to you on Islam. So he took an oath of allegiance to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It (this allegiance of yours) is on behalf of your people too. He said: It is on behalf of my people too. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition and the flying column passed by his people. The leader of the flying column said to the detachment: Did you find anything from these people? One of the people said: I found a utensil for water. Upon this he (the commander) said: Return it, for he is one of the people of Dimad. (Using translation from Muslim 868)

[Machine] I have never seen the Quraysh wanting to kill the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except on one occasion when I saw them sitting in the shade of the Kaaba while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying near the Maqam. Uqbah ibn Abi Muayt stood up and placed his cloak around his neck, then pulled it until it reached his knees. The people screamed, thinking that he had killed him. Abu Bakr approached, furious, and seized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from behind, saying, "Would you kill a man just for saying, 'My Lord is Allah?'" They then left the Prophet ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he passed by them while they were sitting in the shade of the Kaaba and said, "O people of Quraysh, by the One whose hand my life is in, I was not sent to you except for slaughter." And he pointed with his hand to his throat. Abu Jahl said to him, "O Muhammad, you were not ignorant." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "And you are one of them."

[Machine] Abu Jahl said, "Does Muhammad humble his face behind your backs? By the one he swears by, if I see him do that, I will step on his neck." So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, intending to step on his neck. But suddenly he was unable to move; it was as if his hands were being restrained and his heels were being pulled back. They came to him and said, "What's wrong with you, O Abu Al-Hakam?" He replied, "Between him and me is a trench of fire and terror with wings." Abu Al-Mu'tamir said, "So Allah revealed 'Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays' until the end of the verse, 'So let him call his band of supporters.' His people said, 'We shall summon the executioners.' But the angels said, 'Do not obey him.' Then Allah commanded him to perform the prostration as He had commanded him in the end of the Surah." He also narrated to me in this Hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If he came near me, the angels would seize him limb by limb."

He passed by a gathering where there was a mixture of Muslims, polytheists, idolaters, and Jews. Among them was Abdullah ibn Abi ibn Salul and Abdullah ibn Rawaha. When the gathering was disturbed by the dust caused by the animal, Abdullah ibn Abi ibn Salul covered his nose with his garment and said, "Don't bring your trouble upon us." The Prophet ﷺ greeted them and stood before them, inviting them to Allah and reciting the Quran to them. Abdullah ibn Abi ibn Salul said, "O man, if what you say is true, then you are surely better than this. Do not bother us in our gatherings, and go back to your journey. Whoever comes to you from us, then inform us about him."

We were along with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in an expedition that a person from amongst the emigrants struck at the back of a person from the Ansir. The Ansiri said: O Ansar! And the Muhijir said: O Emigrants! Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What are these proclamations of the Days of Ignorance? They said: Messenger of Allah, a person from the emigrants struck at the back of an Ansari, whereupon he said: It is something disgusting. 'Abdullah b. Ubayy heard it and said: They have indeed done it. By Allah, when we would return to Medina the respectable amongst them (the Ansar) would turn away the mean (the emigrants). Thereupon 'Umar said: Permit me so that I should strike the neck of this hypocrite. But he (the Holy Prophet) said: Leave him, the people may not say that Muhammad kills his companions. “A Jew from among the Jews of Bani Zuraiq, whose name was Labid bin A’sam, cast a spell on the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ began to imagine that he had done something when he had not. One day, or one night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated, and then supplicated again. Then he said: ‘O ‘Aishah, do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I asked Him about? Two men came to me, and one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet. The one at my head said to the one at my feet, or the one at my feet said to the one at my head "what is ailing this man ?" He said: “He has been affected by a spell.” He said: “Who cast the spell on him?” He said: “Labid bin A’sam.” He said: “With what?” He said: “With a comb and the hairs stuck to it, and the spathe of a male date palm.” He said: “Where is that?” He said: “In the well of Dhu Arwan.” She said: “So the Prophet ﷺ went to it, with a group of his Companions, then he came and said: ‘By Allah. O ‘Aishah. It was as if its water was infused with henna and its date palms were like the heads of devils.’” She said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, why don’t you burn them?’ He said: ‘As for me, Allah has healed me, and I do not like to let evil spread among the people.’ Then he issued orders that the well be filled up with earth.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3545)

[Machine] Smoke will appear on the Day of Judgment and it will seize the ears and eyes of the hypocrites. It will also affect the believers like a cold. We became terrified, so I went to Ibn Masud who was reclining. He got angry, sat up, and said, "O people, whoever knows something, let him speak, and whoever does not know something, let him say 'Allah knows best.' For it is from knowledge that a man should say when he does not know something, 'I do not know.' Indeed, Allah, the Most High, said to His Prophet ﷺ , 'Say, I do not ask you any payment for it, nor am I one of the pretentious.'" The Quraysh invoked a curse upon themselves, so the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, help me against them with seven years of famine like the years of Joseph." So they were afflicted with a year of famine in which they ate dead animals and bones. A man will see something between the sky and the earth, like the appearance of smoke. Then Abu Sufyan ibn Harb came and said, "O Muhammad, you have come to command the maintaining of family ties, and your people have perished. So invoke Allah." He recited this verse, "Then wait for the Day when the sky will bring clear smoke, covering the people; this is a painful torment." Until the end of the verse "Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little, indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]." Then the torment will be lifted from them when that happens, and they will return to their disbelief. That is the meaning of His statement, "On the Day the major blast will occur." That is the Day of Badr. "Their retreating was not averted from them." That is the Day of Badr. "The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome." The Romans have already been defeated and so have the Arabs after their victory.
