[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to me one day from a funeral in Al-Baqi' while I had a headache. I said, "O Rasulullah, my head is hurting." He replied, "Rather, it is my head that is hurting." Then he said, "What harm would it do to you if you were to die before me, then I would wash you, shroud you, pray over you, and bury you?" I said, "Because I fear that if you did that, you would return to my house and marry one of your other wives." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, then he began to experience the pain in which he eventually passed away.
[Machine] The first time the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complained, he was at the house of Maymuna. His illness became severe until he fainted. They consulted about his condition and decided to perform cupping on him. When he regained consciousness, he asked, "What is this? Are there women from the land of Abyssinia here?" He pointed towards Abyssinia. Among them was Asma bint Umays. They replied, "We suspected you of having an ailment, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "If that was the case, Allah would not have afflicted me with it, and no one in the house would have remained without being cupped, except for the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abbas." Maymuna was fasting that day, and she used to fast as a sign of support for the fasting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .
“I asked ‘Aishah: ‘O mother! Tell me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ She said: ‘He felt pain and started to spit (over his body), and we began to compare his spittle to the spittle of a person eating raisins. Like a person eating raisins and spitting out the seeds. He used to go around among his wives, but when he became ill, he asked them permission to stay in the house of ‘Aishah and that they should come to him in turns.’ She said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me, (supported) between two men, with his feet making lines along the ground. One of them was ‘Abbas.’ I told Ibn ‘Abbas this Hadith and he said: ‘Do you know who the other man was whom ‘Aishah did not name? He was ‘Ali bin Abu Talib.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1618)
[Machine] We stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his illness, and he began to gesture to us, saying, "Do not let me give birth." So we said, "It is the dislike of a sick person for medicine." But when he regained consciousness, he said, "Did you not prevent me from giving birth?" So we said, "It is the dislike of a sick person for medicine." Then he said, "There is no one left in the house who has not given birth, except for `Abbas, for I have seen him not witness them."
Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ became ill, he used to recite the Muawidhatan (i.e. the last two surahs of the Qur'an) and blow his breath over himself (after their recitation ) and rubbed his hands over his body. So when he was afflicted with his fatal illness. I started reciting the Muawidhatan and blowing my breath over him as he used to do and then I rubbed the hand of the Prophet ﷺ over his body. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4439)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ fainted and his head was in my lap, so I began to wipe it and pray for his recovery. When he regained consciousness, he ﷺ said, "No, rather I ask Allah, the Exalted Companion, along with Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil."
I heard that never a prophet dies until he is given an option to opt the life of (this) world or that of the Hereafter. She further said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in his last illness in which he' died. I heard him saying in gruffness of the voice: Along with those persons upon whom Allah bestowed favours from amongst the Apostles, the testifiers of truth, the martyrs, the pious and goodly company are they (iv. 69). (It was on bearing these words) that I thought that he had been given choice (and he opted to live with these pious persons in the Paradise). (Using translation from Muslim 2444c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us during his illness in which he died, and his head was tied up. I followed him until he stood on the pulpit and said, "Indeed, I am standing by the Pool (of Paradise) soon." Then he said, "Verily, a servant was presented with the dunya (worldly life) and its adornments, and he chose the Hereafter." No one among the people understood it except for Abu Bakr, who said, "By my father and mother, I would sacrifice you for our wealth, ourselves, and our children." Then he descended from the pulpit, and he was not seen until the hour (of his death).
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon and said, "Verily, Allah has given the choice to His servant between what He pleases of the flowers of this worldly life and his meeting with Him, so he chose to meet his Lord." Abu Bakr wept and said, "Rather! I would ransom you with my father and mother." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Be silent, O Abu Bakr." Then he said, "If anyone is to be trusted with the wealth and life of the people, it is Abu Bakr. If I were to take an intimate friend from among mankind, I would have taken Abu Bakr as my intimate friend. However, the bond of Islam and mutual love remains in this mosque. There is no thicket except it has been removed, except the thicket of Abu Bakr." Abu Sa'eed said, "So I said, 'It is amazing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to inform us that Allah has given the choice to a servant between the worldly life and the Hereafter, and this person is weeping. And when there is someone who is given the choice, it is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when there is someone who is weeping, it is Abu Bakr. And when there is Abu Bakr, he knows the Messenger of Allah ﷺ better than us."
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ prayed for the martyrs of Uhud, then he went and sat on the pulpit, praised Allah and glorified Him. Then he said, 'O people, indeed I am amongst you now, but soon I will depart. And verily, I will bear witness against you, and indeed, by Allah, I am not afraid that you will associate partners with Allah after me. But I fear for you that you will compete with one another for worldly gains.' Then he entered his house and did not come out until Allah took his soul, and this was his last sermon before Allah took his soul."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pour upon me from seven full pitchers, which have not been opened or touched, so that I may be at ease and entrust the people." Aisha said, "So we made him sit in a trough made of copper for Hafsah, and we poured water over him until he indicated to us that we had done so. Then he went out and praised Allah and prayed for the martyrs who were killed on the Day of Uhud."
[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ arrived and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab, he ﷺ said, "I will write a book for you that will prevent you from ever going astray." Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is in excessive pain and you have the Quran, which is sufficient for us as the book of Allah." The people of the house disagreed and argued, causing a lot of noise and discussions when they were in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stand up." Ibn Abbas used to say, "All the arguments are worthless compared to the argument between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the writing of that book due to their differences and noise."
I have better claim to it, whereas Allah and the Faithful do not substantiate the claim of anyone but that of Abu Bakr. (Using translation from Muslim 2387)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said about the pain he was in when he was about to pass away: "Pour upon me from seven qirabs that have not been dissolved or cut; perhaps I will make a covenant with the people." So we made him sit in a container belonging to Hafsah, and we continued pouring upon him until he motioned to us that we had done it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in his illness in which he died, "Pour over me seven buckets of water that have not been used or touched so that I may be relieved and give advice to the people." Aisha said, so we sat him in a container belonging to Hafsah bint Umar made of copper and poured water over him until he signaled to us that we have done so. Then he went out to the mosque.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was in pain and said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, when Abu Bakr stands in your place, people cannot hear him because of his weeping. So, ask Umar to lead the people in prayer." He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I repeated the same request, and he said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Then, I said to Hafsah, "Tell him that when Abu Bakr stands in your place, people cannot hear him because of his weeping."

"I entered upon Aisha and said: 'Will you not tell me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became seriously ill, he said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ" He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then he came to us and said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then for the third time he said the same thing. She said: The people were in the Masjid, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr, telling him to lead the people in prayer, so the messenger came to him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is telling you to lead the people in prayer." Abu Bakr was a tenderhearted man, he said: "0 'Umar. lead the in prayer." But ('Umar) said: "You have more right to that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt a little better, he came with the help of two men, one of whom was Al-'Abbas, to pray Zuhr. When Abu Bakr saw him, he wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him not to step back. He told them (the two men) to seat him beside Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr started to pray standing. The people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying sitting."' "I ('Ubaidullah) entered upon Ibn Abbas and said 'Shall I not tell you what Aisha narrated to me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' So I told him and he did not deny any of it, but he said: 'Did she tell you the name of the man who was with Al-'Abbas?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'That was Ali, may Allah honor his face."' Fatima the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ sent someone to Abu Bakr (when he was a caliph), asking for her inheritance of what Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left of the property bestowed on him by Allah from the Fai (i.e. booty gained without fighting) in Medina, and Fadak, and what remained of the Khumus of the Khaibar booty. On that, Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Our property is not inherited. Whatever we leave, is Sadaqa, but the family of (the Prophet) Muhammad can eat of this property.' By Allah, I will not make any change in the state of the Sadaqa of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and will leave it as it was during the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and will dispose of it as Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do." So Abu Bakr refused to give anything of that to Fatima. So she became angry with Abu Bakr and kept away from him, and did not task to him till she died. She remained alive for six months after the death of the Prophet. When she died, her husband ʿAli, buried her at night without informing Abu Bakr and he said the funeral prayer by himself. When Fatima was alive, the people used to respect ʿAli much, but after her death, ʿAli noticed a change in the people's attitude towards him. So ʿAli sought reconciliation with Abu Bakr and gave him an oath of allegiance. ʿAli had not given the oath of allegiance during those months (i.e. the period between the Prophet's death and Fatima's death). ʿAli sent someone to Abu Bakr saying, "Come to us, but let nobody come with you," as he disliked that ʿUmar should come, ʿUmar said (to Abu Bakr), "No, by Allah, you shall not enter upon them alone " Abu Bakr said, "What do you think they will do to me? By Allah, I will go to them' So Abu Bakr entered upon them, and then ʿAli uttered Tashah-hud and said (to Abu Bakr), "We know well your superiority and what Allah has given you, and we are not jealous of the good what Allah has bestowed upon you, but you did not consult us in the question of the rule and we thought that we have got a right in it because of our near relationship to Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Thereupon Abu Bakr's eyes flowed with tears. And when Abu Bakr spoke, he said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is to keep good relations with the relatives of Messenger of Allah ﷺ is dearer to me than to keep good relations with my own relatives. But as for the trouble which arose between me and you about his property, I will do my best to spend it according to what is good, and will not leave any rule or regulation which I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ following, in disposing of it, but I will follow." On that ʿAli said to Abu Bakr, "I promise to give you the oath of allegiance in this after noon." So when Abu Bakr had offered the Zuhr prayer, he ascended the pulpit and uttered the Tashah-hud and then mentioned the story of ʿAli and his failure to give the oath of allegiance, and excused him, accepting what excuses he had offered; Then ʿAli (got up) and praying (to Allah) for forgiveness, he uttered Tashah-hud, praised Abu Bakr's right, and said, that he had not done what he had done because of jealousy of Abu Bakr or as a protest of that Allah had favored him with. ʿAli added, "But we used to consider that we too had some right in this affair (of rulership) and that he (i.e. Abu Bakr) did not consult us in this matter, and therefore caused us to feel sorry." On that all the Muslims became happy and said, "You have done the right thing." The Muslims then became friendly with ʿAli as he returned to what the people had done (i.e. giving the oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr). (Using translation from Bukhārī 4240)

[Machine] "He (referring to Ali) has arrived in the city along with the people of Abiyyat from your tribe. And we have commanded them to surrender, so divide it among them. So I said, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful), order someone else to do that.' He replied, 'Take it, O man.' He said, 'While I was in this condition, their leader came and spoke to me kindly. He said, 'This is Uthman, Abdul Rahman bin Auf, Saad bin Abi Waqqas, and Zubair bin al-Awwam. I do not know if Talhah is there or not, or should they seek your permission on behalf of anyone?' He said, 'Give them permission.' He said, 'Then he waited for an hour. Then he came and said, 'Abbas and Ali seek permission to come to you.' He said, 'Give them permission.' When Abbas came in, he said, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, decide between me and this person (Ali).' They both immediately began to quarrel about the property that Allah had bestowed upon His Messenger from the wealth of Banu al-Nadhir. The people said, 'Decide between them, O Amir al-Mu'minin, and relieve each of them from their opponent, for their dispute has been going on for too long.' Umar said, 'I adjure the two of you by Allah, Whose permission the heavens and the earth need for their existence, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We do not leave behind any inheritance, whatever we leave is for charity"?'They said, 'Indeed, he said that.' Then he repeated to them the same words. They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then I inform you about this surplus. Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, allotted something specifically to His Prophet ﷺ that He did not give to anyone else. He said, "And what Allah gave as booty to His Messenger from them - you did not spur for it [in horse] or for camel - any acquisition [ajfa] [as that of war booty] is exclusively for the Messenger - Allah's pleasure be upon him. And you have expended no small [effort] or burdened ‘to force ] in horse] but Allah has endeared to His Messenger and has hastened an union between the Muhajireen [Emigrants] and the Ansaar [Helpers] who supported him." (Quran, 59:6) This surplus of the booty was specifically for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and, I swear by Allah, you did not get any of it, nor did you have any preference over it. It was distributed among you and spent on you, until what remained was what remains (with me) from the money. He would spend on his dependents for a year, and sometimes a year's provisions would hold him back, and then he would treat whatever remained as the property of Allah. When Allah took away His Messenger ﷺ , Abu Bakr said, 'I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after him, so I will do in it what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr did.' Then it came to me after Abu Bakr for two years during my period of leadership, so I did in it what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr did. And when you came to me, both of you came to me, Abbas seeking his share of inheritance from his nephew, and Ali asking me for his wife's inheritance. So I said to both of you, 'I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "We do not leave behind any inheritance, whatever we leave is for charity."' Then it occurred to me that I should give it to both of you. So I took your pledge and oath with Allah that you would act in it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr did. When I took it, you told me to give it to you based on something other than that, and by Him in Whose Hand is my soul, Who raises the heavens and lowers the mountains, I will not decide between you in this matter except with this judgment. If you both cannot do it (i.e., settle the matter), then hand it over to me.' So Ali prevailed over him and it remained with Ali. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, his wives made up their minds to send 'Uthman b. 'Affan (as their spokesman) to Abu Bakr to demand from him their share from the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ. (At this), A'isha said to them: Hasn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:" We (Prophets) do not have any heirs; what we leave behind is (to be given in) charity"? (Using translation from Muslim 1758)
