Yahya related to me from Malik from Nuaym ibn Abdullah al- Mujmirthat Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Zayd told him that Abu Masud al Ansari said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us at the gathering of Sad ibn Ubada. Bashir ibn Sad said to him, 'Allah has ordered us to ask for blessings on you, Messenger of Allah. How should we do it?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished we had not asked him. Then he told us to say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim, and give baraka to Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You gave baraka to the family of Ibrahim. In all the worlds You are worthy of Praise and Glorious,' and then give the taslim as you have learnt." Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa ali Muhammad kama sallaita Ibrahim, wa baraka ala Muhammad wa ali Muhammad kama baraktaala ali Ibrahim. Fi'l alamin, innaka Hamidu'm - Majid.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلاَمُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Hazim from his father that Amr ibn Sulaym az-Zuraqi said, "Abu Humayd as-Saidi told me that they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ how they were to ask for blessings upon him and he replied that they should say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and his wives and his descendants asYou blessed the family of Ibrahim, and give baraka to Muhammad and his wives and his descendants as You gave baraka to the family of Ibrahim. You are worthy of Praise and Glorious.'" Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa azwajihi wa alihi kama sallaita ala ali Ibrahim, wa barakaala Muhammad wa azwajihi wa alihi kama baraktaalaali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidu'm - Majid.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.”

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُلْ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىإِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

“I heard Ibn Abi Laila say: ‘Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah met me and said: “Shall I not give you a gift? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and we said: ‘We know what it means to send greetings on you, but what does it mean to send peace and blessings upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallayta ‘ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid; Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid (O Allah, send your grace, honour and mercy upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your grace, honour and mercy upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 904)

أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا أَوْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَدْ عَلِمْنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَ فَعَلَّمَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] When the verse "Indeed, Allah confers blessings upon the Prophet and His angels" [33:56] was revealed, they said, "How should we send blessings upon you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty. And send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty." He (Yazid) said, "And we say along with them." He said, "Yazid added something of his own, or he narrated something that Ka'b narrated from himself, but I do not know what it was."

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ} [الأحزاب 56] قَالُوا كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ قَالَ وَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ وَعَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ قَالَ يَزِيدُ فَلَا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ زَادَهُ ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى مِنْ قِبَلِ نَفْسِهِ أَوْ شَيْءٌ رَوَاهُ كَعْبٌ

[Machine] It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, how should we send blessings upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and bestow peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have bestowed peace upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.' " I recited this narration to Abdul Rahman Malik, from Nuaim ibn Abdullah, that Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Zaid informed him from Abu Mas'ud.

قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ فَقَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَقَرَأْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَالِكٌ عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ

[Machine] A man approached and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were with him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you with peace, so how should we send blessings upon you when we have already prayed and Allah has blessed you?" The Messenger of Allah remained silent until we thought that the man had not asked him properly. Then he said, "If you have prayed upon me, then say, 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon the family of Muhammad, as You have sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَمَّا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ إِذَا نَحْنُ صَلَّيْنَا فِي صَلَاتِنَا صَلَّى الله عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَصَمَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْنَا أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَقُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah met me and said, "Should I not give you a gift that I heard from the Prophet ﷺ?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Say, 'O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You have sent prayers upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are commendable and glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are praiseworthy and glorious.'" This hadith has been narrated by Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari from Musa ibn Ismail in his authentic compilation. I have mentioned it so that the beneficiary may know that all the Ahl al-Bayt (Family of the Prophet) and the descendants, as well as Abu Farwah and Urwah ibn al-Harith al-Hamdani, are among the reliable companions in Kufa.

لَقِيَنِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ فَقَالَ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً سَمِعْتُهَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ فَاهْدِهَا إِلَيَّ قَالَ سَأَلْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حُمَيْدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» وَقَدْ رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ وَأَلْفَاظِهِ حَرْفًا بَعْدَ حَرْفٍ الْإِمَامُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ فِي الْجَامِعِ الصَّحِيحِ وَإِنَّمَا خَرَّجْتُهُ لِيَعْلَمَ الْمُسْتَفِيدُ أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَالْآلَ جَمِيعًا هُمْ وَأَبُو فَرْوَةَ وَعُرْوَةُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ مِنْ أَوْثَقِ التَّابِعِينَ بِالْكُوفَةِ

[Machine] A man approached and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were with him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know how to greet you with peace, but how do we send blessings upon you when we have already sent blessings upon you in our prayers and Allah has already sent blessings upon you?" He remained silent until we wished that the man had not asked him. Then he said, "When you say the prayer upon me, say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, the Prophet who is unlettered, and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad, the Prophet who is unlettered, and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty.'"

أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَّا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ إِذَا نَحْنُ صَلَّيْنَا عَلَيْكَ فِي صَلَاتِنَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَصَمَتَ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْنَا أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَقُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ «»

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "When any one of you performs the Tashahhud (bearing witness) in prayer, let him say: O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have sent prayers, blessed, and had mercy upon Ibrahim. Verily, You are Worthy of Praise and Glorious. And the majority of the narrations for this principle are for the obligations of prayer."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِذَا تَشَهَّدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَارْحَمْ مُحَمَّدًا وَآلَ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ وَبَارَكْتَ وَتَرَحَّمْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حُمَيْدٌ مَجِيدٌ «» وَأَكْثَرُ الشَّوَاهِدِ لِهَذِهِ الْقَاعِدَةِ لِفُرُوضِ الصَّلَاةِ

His father said: "We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1290)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in the Majlis of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah and Bashir bin Sa'd said to him: 'Allah has commanded us to send Salah upon you, O Messenger of Allah; so how should we send salah upon you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished that he had not asked him. Then he said: 'Say: 'Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)" And the salam is as you know.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1285)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ»

[Machine] Narrated Abu Mas'ud:

A man came and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know how to send greetings upon you, but how should we pray for you when we are already praying in our own prayers? Allah sends His blessings upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent until we wished that the man had not asked him. Then he said, "When you pray, say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, the Prophet who cannot read or write, and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim, and upon the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad, the Prophet who cannot read or write, and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty.'"

وَحَدَّثَنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا الْمَرْءُ الْمُسْلِمُ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فِي صَلَاتِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَّا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ إِذَا نَحْنُ صَلَّيْنَا فِي صَلَاتِنَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَصَمَتَ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْنَا أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ قَالَ «إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَقُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ فَقَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in the Majlis of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah and Bashir bin Sa'd said to him: 'Allah has commanded us to send Salah upon you, O Messenger of Allah; so how should we send salah upon you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished that he had not asked him. Then he said: 'Say: 'Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)" And the salam is as you know.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1285)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ»

"Ka'b bin Ujrah said to me: 'Shall I not give you a gift?' We said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1289)

لِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ؛ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know how to send salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin 'abdika wa rasulika kama salaita 'ala Ibrahim wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger , as You sent Salah upon Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim)." قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

“When you send peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then do it well, for you do not know, that may be shown to him.” They said to him: “Teach us.” He said: “Say: ‘Allahumma aj’al salataka wa rahmataka wa barakatika ‘ala sayyidil-mursalin wa imamil-muttaqin wa khatamin- nabiyyin, Muhammad ‘abdika wa Rasulika imamil-khayri (wa qa’idil- khair), wa Rasulir-Rahmah. Allahummab’athhu maqaman mahmudan yaghbituhu bihil-awwaluna wal-akhirun. Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin kama sallayta ‘ala Ibrahim wa ‘ala ali Ibrahim; Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahim wa ‘ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidum Majid (O Allah, send Your grace, honour, mercy and blessings upon the leader of the Messengers, the imam of the pious and the seal of the Prophets, Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger, the Imam of the good (and the leader) of the good, and the Messenger of mercy. O Allah, raise him to a station of praise and glory that will be the envy of the first and the last. O Allah, send Your grace, honour and mercy upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your grace, honour and mercy upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 906)

عَبْدُ اللهِ «إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَحَسِّنُوا الصَّلَاةَ عَلَيْهِ فَإِنَّكُمْ لَا تَدْرُونَ لَعَلَّ ذَلِكَ يُعْرَضُ عَلَيْهِ» قَالَ فَعَلَّمَنَا قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَاتَكَ وَرَحْمَتَكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ عَلَى سَيِّدِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَإِمَامِ الْمُتَّقِينَ وَخَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّينَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ إِمَامِ الْخَيْرِ وَقَائِدِ الْخَيْرِ وَرَسُولِ الرَّحْمَةِ اللهُمَّ ابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا يَغْبِطُهُ بِهِ الْأَوَّلُونَ وَالْآخَرُونَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَرَحْمَتَكَ عَلَى سَيِّدِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَإِمَامِ الْمُتَّقِينَ وَخَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّينَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ إِمَامِ الْخَيْرِ وَقَائِدِ الْخَيْرِ وَرَسُولِ الرَّحْمَةِ اللهُمَّ ابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا يَغْبِطُهُ بِهِ الْأَوَّلُونَ وَالْآخَرُونَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» وَأَبُو سَلَمَةَ هَذَا الَّذِي رَوَى عَنْهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مِسْعَرُ بْنُ كِدَامٍ

[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Greetings belong to Allah, and prayers and good words. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his household as You blessed Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless us with them. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his household as You blessed Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless us with them. The prayers of Allah and the prayers of the believers upon Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, ﷺ and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."

وَقَالَ عَلَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ وَصَلَاةُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْهِ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ»

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have learned how to greet you, so how should we pray for you?" He said, "Say: 'O Allah, send peace and blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent peace and blessings upon Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy, glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy, glorious."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُلْ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you, so how do we pray upon you?" He replied, "Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majidun. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majidun."

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know this greeting of peace, but how should we send blessings upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim. Verily, You are praiseworthy and glorious. O Allah, shower blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You showered blessings upon Ibrahim. Verily, You are praiseworthy and glorious.

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Kaʿb bin 'Ujra met me and said, "Shall I give you a present? Once the Prophet ﷺ came to us and we said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ! We know how to greet you; but how to send 'Salat' upon you? He said, 'Say: Allahumma Salli ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ʿAli Muhammadin, kama sal-laita 'ala all Ibrahima innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala all Muhammadin, kama barakta 'ala all Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6357)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلَ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ «» وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَرْبٍ

[Machine] When this verse was revealed: "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace" (Quran 33:56), we said, "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you, but how should we send blessings upon you?" The Prophet replied, "You should say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Send blessings upon us with them and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Grant us peace, O Prophet, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.'"

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا} قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ تَقُولُونَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ الْحَمِيدُ الْمَجِيدُ وَصَلِّ عَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ الْحَمِيدُ الْمَجِيدُ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

We were sitting in the company of Sa'id b. 'Ubida when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us. Bashir b. S'ad said: Allah has commanded us to bless you. Messenger of Allah! But how should we bless you? He (the narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept quiet (and we were so much perturbed over his silence) that we wished we had not asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: (For blessing me) say:" 0 Allah, bless Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst bless the mernbers of Ibrahim's household. Grant favours to Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst grant favours to the members of the household of Ibrahim in the world. Thou art indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious" ; and salutation as you know. (Using translation from Muslim 405)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ

Some people asked: Messenger of Allah, how should we invoke blessings on you? He said: Say,” O Allah, bless Muhammad, his wives and his off springs, as Thou didst bless Abraham’s family, and grant favours to Muhammad’s family, his wives and off springs, as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 979)

أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have known how to send blessings upon you, so how do we pray upon you?" He said, "Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahim wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Ibn Abi Layla said, "And we say, 'and upon us with them.' " And he narrated the hadith.

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى وَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ «وَعَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ» وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ

[Machine] I heard Abd al-Hamid ask Musa ibn Talha, "How do we pray upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ?" Musa replied, "I asked Zaid ibn Kharija and he said that he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Zaid said, 'I asked the Messenger of Allah, 'How should we pray upon you?' He replied, 'Say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Truly, You are praiseworthy and glorious.'''

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الْحَمِيدِ سَأَلَ مُوسَى بْنَ طَلْحَةَ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ مُوسَى سَأَلْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ خَارِجَةَ فَقَالَ لِي سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ صَلُّوا ثُمَّ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

"It was said to the Prophet ﷺ: We have been commanded to send salah and salams upon you. We know how to send salams, but how should we send salah?' He said: Say: 'Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim).'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1286)

قِيلَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ أُمِرْنَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ وَنُسَلِّمَ فَأَمَّا السَّلَامُ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَا فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ «قُولُوا» اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?' He said: "Say: 'Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (One of the narrators) Ibn Abi Laila said: "We used to say: 'And also upon us.'" Abu Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'I) said: It was narrated from his book, and this is a mistake. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1287)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى وَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ وَعَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ

'We said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (One of the narrators) 'abdur Rahman said: "We used to say: 'And also upon us.'" Abu Abdur-rahman (An Nasa'i) said: This is more worthy of being correct than the one that is before it. And we do not know of anyone who said "Amr bin Murrah" in it other than in this case. And Allah (SWT) knows best. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1288)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ وَعَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا أَوْلَى بِالصَّوَابِ مِنَ الَّذِي قَبْلَهُ لَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا قَالَ فِيهِ عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ غَيْرَ هَذَا وَهُو عَنِ الْحَكَمِ مَشْهُورٌ

"Ka'b bin Ujrah said to me: 'Shall I not give you a gift?' We said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1289)

قَالَ لِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

His father said: "We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1290)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ قَالَ قُولُوا «اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

"I asked Zaid bin Kharijah who said: 'I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: Send salah upon me and strive hard in supplication, and say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad).'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1292)

أَنَا سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ صَلَّوْا عَلَيَّ وَاجْتَهِدُوا فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَقُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

“We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! We know what it means to send greetings upon you, but what does it mean to send peace and blessings upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin ‘abdika wa Rasulika kama salayta ‘ala Ibrahima, wa barik ‘ala Muhammad (wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin) kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima [O Allah, send Your grace, honor and mercy upon Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger, as You sent Your (grace, honour and mercy) upon Ibrahim, and send Your blessings upon Muhammad (and the family of Muhammad) as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim].” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 903)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا التَّسْلِيمُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ»

"Abu Humaid As-Sa'idi told me that they said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how should we send salah upon you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Say: Allahumma sali 'ala Muhammadin wa azwajihi wa dhuriyatihi ( O Allah, send salah upon Muhamad and his wives and progeny)- in the narration of Al-Harith (one of the two who narrated it)-kama salaita 'ala Ibraim wa barik 'alaMuhammad wa azwajihi wa dhuriyatti (as You sent salah upon Irahim and send blessings upon Muhammad and his wives and progeny)- both of them said that- kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahima innaka hamidun majid (as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim, You are indeed worthy of praise, Full of glory.)" Abu Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'i) said: Qutaibah informed us of this hadith two times, and perhaps he had missed a part of it. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1294)

أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ» فِي حَدِيثِ الْحَارِثِ «كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ» قَالَا جَمِيعًا «كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ سَقَطَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْهُ سَطْرٌ

His father said: "We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1290)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ خَالَفَهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ

[Machine] I heard Musa ibn Talhah and Abdul Hamid asked him, "How is the prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ?" Musa answered, "I asked Zaid ibn Kharijah al-Ansari who said, 'I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, how is the prayer upon you?' He replied, 'Say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are worthy of praise and glory.'"

سَمِعْتُ مُوسَى بْنَ طَلْحَةَ وَسَأَلَهُ عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ؟ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ خَارِجَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ صَلَّوْا عَلَيَّ ثُمَّ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[Machine] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, how should we pray upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, and bestow peace upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You have sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. You are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory.' And say, 'Peace,' as you have been taught. Malik bin Anas narrated it from Nuaim bin Abdullah, from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Zaid, from Abu Mas'ood Uqbah bin Amr."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ خَالَفَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو

We were sitting in the company of Sa'id b. 'Ubida when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us. Bashir b. S'ad said: Allah has commanded us to bless you. Messenger of Allah! But how should we bless you? He (the narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept quiet (and we were so much perturbed over his silence) that we wished we had not asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: (For blessing me) say:" 0 Allah, bless Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst bless the mernbers of Ibrahim's household. Grant favours to Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst grant favours to the members of the household of Ibrahim in the world. Thou art indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious" ; and salutation as you know. (Using translation from Muslim 405)

أَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ [26] خَالَفَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي لَفْظِ الْحَدِيثِ

[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Peace be upon you. We have acknowledged that, but how should we send prayers upon you, may Allah send prayers upon you?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent for a while, then said, "You should say, 'O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, as You blessed Ibrahim. Indeed, You are praiseworthy, glorious.'"

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْكَ؟ فَسَكَتَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ تَقُولُونَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

"It was said to the Prophet ﷺ: We have been commanded to send salah and salams upon you. We know how to send salams, but how should we send salah?' He said: Say: 'Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim).'" قِيلَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَمَرَنَا اللهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ وَنُسَلِّمَ فَأَمَّا السَّلَامُ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ [27] خَالَفَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ بِشْرٍ مُرْسَلًا

We said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ This is (i.e. we know) the greeting to you; will you tell us how to send Salat on you?" He said, "Say: 'Allahumma Salli 'ala Muhammadin ʿAbdika wa rasulika kama sal-laita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa all Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa ʿAli Ibrahim." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6358)

قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ التَّسْلِيمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ بِالصَّلَاةِ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ خَالَفَهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ رَوَاهُ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَارِجَةَ

"Ka'b bin Ujrah said to me: 'Shall I not give you a gift?' We said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1289)

قَالَ كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ ألَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
