48. Virtues of the Companions (4/6)
We were in the house of Abu Musa along with some of the companions of 'Abdullah and they were looking at the Holy Book. 'Abdullah stood up, whereupon Abu Mas'ud said: I do not know whether Messenger of Allah, ﷺ has left after him one having a better knowledge (of Islam) than the man who is standing. Abu Musa said: If you say this, that is correct, because he had been present when we had been absent and he was permitted when we were detained. (Using translation from Muslim 2461b)
[Machine] To me, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "You have my permission to remove the veil and to listen to my words until I forbid you." Amru bin Ali informed us, from Abdul Rahman, from Sufyan, from Al-Hasan bin Ubaidullah, from Ibrahim bin Suwaid, from Abdullah, who said this was transmitted.
I came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and thought that 'Abdullah was amongst the members of the family, or like that. (Using translation from Muslim 2460c)
[Machine] About Saad in this verse {And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening}. He said, "This verse was revealed regarding six people, including me and Ibn Mas'ud. It was revealed granting permission for these individuals."
[Machine] Inform us about a man with close resemblance in appearance, manners, and guidance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we can adhere to him. He said, "I do not know anyone who resembles the appearance, manners, and guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more closely than the son of Umm Abd."
[Machine] "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and we were six in number." The polytheists said, "Drive these people away from you, as they are not your supporters." And indeed, he said, "I, Ibn Mas'ud, a man from Hudhayl, Bilal, and two other men whose names I have forgotten." So Allah revealed the verse, "{And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance.} [Al-An'am 52] until His saying, '{the wrongdoers}.' [Al-An'am 52]"
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'If I were to appoint anyone as my successor without consulting anyone, I would have appointed Ibn Umm 'Abd.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 137)
48.38 [Machine] Ammar ibn Yasir
[Machine] There was an exchange of words between me and 'Ammaar, and I became harsh in my speech towards him. 'Ammaar then went to complain about me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so Khalid came with 'Ammaar to complain about me. Khalid began to worsen the situation for him, and nothing made him feel worse except for Khalid's harshness. The Prophet ﷺ remained silent, so 'Ammaar began to cry. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, don't you see him?" The Prophet ﷺ raised his head and said, "Whoever opposes 'Ammaar, Allah will oppose him, and whoever hates 'Ammaar, Allah will hate him." Khalid said, "So I left, and there was nothing dearer to me than 'Ammaar's satisfaction. I met him and he accepted my apology."
[Machine] Khalid sent me as a messenger of the Prophet ﷺ in a military expedition, and we encountered a group of people who were united. Ammar said, "These people have oppressed us with their unity, so I did not pay attention to Ammar's words." Ammar said, "Should I not inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" When we arrived to him, I expressed my doubt to him. When he saw that the Prophet ﷺ did not support me, he turned away and his eyes were filled with tears. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Khalid, do not curse Ammar, for whoever curses Ammar, Allah will curse him, and whoever belittles Ammar, Allah will belittle him, and whoever ridicules Ammar, Allah will ridicule him." Khalid said, "There is nothing of my sins that I fear more than ridiculing Ammar."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not curse Ammar, for whoever curses Ammar, Allah will curse him, and whoever hates Ammar, Allah will hate him, and whoever belittles Ammar, Allah will belittle him."
That one of the Companions of the Prophet [SAW] said: "The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Ammar's heart overflows with Faith.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5007)
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ should not die on the day he died while still loving a man, and Allah would admit him to Hell." They said: "We used to see him loving you, as he used to employ you." He said: "Allah knows best whether he loved me or he was associating with me, but we used to see him loving a man." They said: "Who is that man?" He said: "Amr ibn Yasir." They said: "That is the one you killed on the day of Siffin." He said: "By Allah, we indeed killed him."
A group of rebels would kill you. (Using translation from Muslim 2916a)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No one is given a choice between two matters except that he chooses the more severe of the two."
48.39 [Machine] Suhaib ibn Sinan
By Allah, the sword of Allah did not reach the neck of the enemy of Allah as it was required to reach. Thereupon Abu Bakr said: Do you say this to the old man of the Quraish and their chief? Then he came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon'him) and informed him of this. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Abu Bakr, you have perhaps annoyed them and if you annoyed them you have in fact annoyed your Lord. So Abu Bakr came to them and said: O my brothers, I have annoyed you. They said: No, our brother, may Allah forgive you (Using translation from Muslim 2504)
48.40 [Machine] Salman al-Farisi
We were sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle ﷺ that Sura al-Jumu'a was revealed to him and when he recited (these words):" Others from amongst them who have not yet joined them," a person amongst them (those who were sitting there) said: Messenger of Allah! But Allah's Apostle ﷺ made no reply, until he questioned him once, twice or thrice. And there was amongst us Salman the Persian. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on Salman and then said: Even if faith were near the Pleiades, a man from amongst these would surely find it. (Using translation from Muslim 2546b)
48.41 [Machine] Salim, Mawla Abi Hudhaifa
I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Learn the recitation of Qur'an from four persons: Ibn Masʿud, Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Ubai and Muʿadh bin Jabal." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3806)
ʿAbdullah bin Masud was mentioned before ʿAbdullah bin ʿAmr who said, "That is a man I still love, as I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying 'Learn the recitation of Qur'an from four from ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud -- he started with him--Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudaifa, Muʿadh bin Jabal and Ubai bin Kaʿb." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3808)
48.42 [Machine] Amru ibn Haram
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah reward you, O Ansar, for your goodness, especially the family of Amr bin Haram and Sa'd bin Ubada."
48.43 [Machine] Khalid ibn al-Walid.
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and instructed the caller to prayer to announce the congregational prayer. The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Good news, good news, good news! Shall I inform you about your army, this warrior? They have set out and met the enemy, but Zaid was martyred. So, seek forgiveness for him. Then, Ja'far took the banner and fought fiercely against the people until he was martyred. I bear witness to his martyrdom, so seek forgiveness for him. Then, Abdullah ibn Rawaha took the banner and stood his ground until he was martyred. So, seek forgiveness for him. Then, Khalid ibn al-Walid took the banner, even though he was not one of the commanders. The messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands and said, "O Allah, he is a sword among Your swords, so grant him victory." On that day, Khalid was named the Sword of Allah.
[Machine] "Abu Amr ibn Hafs ibn al-Mughira, you have taken a worker whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ employed, and you have sheathed a sword that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used and you have hoisted a flag that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised. Indeed, you have severed the ties of kinship and envied your cousin." So Umar said, "Indeed, you are close in relation, but your speech is angry about your cousin."
48.44 [Machine] Abu Talhah
[Machine] Abu Talhah used to throw (an object) between the hands of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so the Prophet ﷺ would extend his neck to see where it falls. Abu Talhah would then say, "This is how, O Prophet of Allah, my father and mother are sacrificed for you, not for your sacrifice."
48.45 [Machine] Abu Salama
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Abu Salamah, his eyes were fixedly open. So he closed them. The members of his family cried. He said: Do not pray for yourself anything but good, for the angels utter Amin to what you say. He then said: O Allah, forgive Abu Salamah, raise his rank among those who are guided, and grant him a succession in his descendants who remain. Forgive both us and him, Lord of the universe. O Allah, make his grave spacious for him, and grant him light in it. Abu Dawud said: The eyes of the deceased should be closed after his expiry. I heard Muhammad b. al-Nu'man al-Muqri say: I heard a man who was devoted to Allah say: I closed the eyes of Ja'far al-Mu'allim when he was dying. He was a man devoted to Allah. I saw him in a dream on the night he died. He said: The biggest thing for me was closing the eyes by you before I died. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3118)
48.46 [Machine] Abu Zaid
[Machine] Ubay, Mu'adh, Zaid, and Abu Zaid read the Quran during the time of the Messenger of Allah.
48.47 [Machine] Zaid ibn Thabit.
The Messenger of Allah said: The most merciful of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr; the one who adheres most sternly to the religion of Allah is 'Umar; the most sincere of them in shyness and modesty is 'Uthman; the best judge is 'Ali bin Abu Talib; the best in reciting the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b; the most knowledgeable of what is lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal; and the most knowledgeable of the rules of inheritance (Fara'id) is Zaid bin Thabit. And every nation has a trustworthy guardian, and the trustworthy guardian of this Ummah is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Jarrah." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 154)

“Rubai, the paternal aunt of Anas, broke the tooth of a girl and they (her family) asked (the girl's family) to let her off, but they refused. They offered to pay compensatory money, but they refused. So they came to Prophet ﷺ who ordered retaliation. Anas bin Nadr said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will the tooth of Rubai' be broken? By the One Who sent you with the truth, it will not be broken!' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'O Anas, what Allah has decreed is retaliation.' So the people accepted that and forgave her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'there are among the slaves of Allah those who, if they swear by Allah, Allah fulfills their oath.'” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2649)

A year later, he attended the battle of Uhud, where he saw Sa'd bin Mu'adh and said: 'O Abu 'Amr where are you going?' He said: 'I long for the fragrance of Paradise and I have found it near the mountains of Uhud.' He fought them until he was killed. They found more than eighty wounds on his body, be they from blows of a sword, puncture wounds, or arrows. My paternal aunt Ar-Ruba'i bin An-Nadr said: 'I could not recognize my brother except by his finger tips.' The Prophet ﷺ paid a visit to Um-Sulaim and she placed before him dates and ghee. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Replace the ghee and dates in their respective containers for I am fasting." Then he stood somewhere in her house and offered an optional prayer and then he invoked good on Um-Sulaim and her family. Then Um-Sulaim said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have a special request (today)." He said, "What is it?" She replied, "(Please invoke for) your servant Anas." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not leave anything good in the world or the Hereafter which he did not invoke (Allah to bestow) on me and said, "O Allah! Give him (i.e. Anas) property and children and bless him." Thus I am one of the richest among the Ansar and my daughter Umaina told me that when Al-Hajjaj came to Basra, more than 120 of my offspring had been buried. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1982)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed (by our house) that my mother Umm Sulaim listened to his voice and said: Messenger of Allah, let my father and mother be sacrificed for thee, here is Unais (and requested him to invoke blessings upon me).
