48. Virtues of the Companions (3/6)
"The Messenger of Allah was one of the Ten (given glad tidings of Paradise). He said: 'Abu Bakr will be in Paradise; 'Umar will be in Paradise; 'Uthman will be in Paradise; 'Ali will be in Paradise; Talhah will be in Paradise; Zubair will be in Paradise; Sa'd will be in Paradise; 'Abdur-Rahman will be in Paradise." He was asked: 'Who will be the ninth?' He said: 'I will.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 133)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will bring us news of the people?" Zubair said, "I will." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, every prophet has disciples, and Zubair is my disciple."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Al-Zubayr is my cousin and one of my companions from my Ummah."
On the day of al-Ahzab, ʿUmar bin Abi Salamah and I were put with the women. I looked out and saw az-Zubair on his horse, coming and going from Banu Quraizah two or three times. When he came back I said: “O my father, I saw you coming and going.” He said: “Did you see me, O my son?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿWho would like to go to Banu Quraizah and bring me news of them?ʿ So I set out and when I came back, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned both his father and his mother for me and said: ʿMay my father and mother be sacrificed for you.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1423)
from Az-Zubair, who said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered together his parents for me the Day of Quraizah, (i.e. the battle of Ahzab) and said: 'May my mother and father be ransomed for you.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3743)
48.21 [Machine] Saad bin Malik
On the day of the battle of Uhud the Prophet ﷺ mentioned for me both his parents (i.e. saying, "Let my parents be sacrificed for you."). (Using translation from Bukhārī 3725)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered his parents for me on the day of Uhud and said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you." Qutaybah said, "While he was fighting, he did not mention Qutaybah's name."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to stay up at night when he first arrived in Medina and said, "I wish a righteous man from my companions would guard me tonight." While we were in that state, we heard the sound of weapons. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who is this?" Saad said, "It is I, Saad. I have come to guard you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the Messenger of Allah rest."
"I heard Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas say: 'I am the first of the Arabs to shoot an arrow in the cause of Allah.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 131)
[Machine] I testify that the Prophet Muhammad said, "Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Talha is in Paradise, Zubair is in Paradise, Abdur Rahman bin Auf is in Paradise, Saad is in Paradise, and if I wanted to name the ninth, I would name myself. I am the ninth of the believers, and the Messenger of Allah is the tenth."
[Machine] I stayed with me and with six of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , among them Ibn Mas'ood. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you were to drive away these lowly people from you, it is they who surround you." This matter affected the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . Then this verse was revealed: "And do not turn away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon seeking His Face. You are not accountable for them, nor are they accountable for you, that perhaps you may deny them and thus be among the wrongdoers." They were seeking his face, referring to His statement: "Is not Allah the Best of judges?"
48.22 [Machine] Saad ibn Muadh, the Master of the Aws
Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given a silken garment, and its beauty and delicacy astonished the people. On that, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No doubt, the handkerchiefs of Saʿd bin Muʿadh in Paradise are better than this." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3249)
The people of (Banu) Quraiza agreed to accept the verdict of Saʿd bin Muʿadh. So the Prophet ﷺ sent for Saʿd, and the latter came (riding) a donkey and when he approached the Mosque, the Prophet ﷺ said to the Ansar, "Get up for your chief or for the best among you." Then the Prophet ﷺ said (to Saʿd)." These (i.e. Banu Quraiza) have agreed to accept your verdict." Saʿd said, "Kill their (men) warriors and take their offspring as captives, "On that the Prophet ﷺ said, "You have judged according to Allah's Judgment," or said, "according to the King's judgment." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4121)
[Machine] "And their wealth is distributed, so he mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ who said, 'Indeed, Allah has ruled upon them with His ruling that is above His seven heavens.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Sa'd as he was being buried, "Indeed, the righteous servant has caused the Throne to move for him, and the gates of the heavens have been opened for him."
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'The Throne of The Most Merciful trembled upon the death of Sa'd bin Mu'adh.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 158)
48.23 [Machine] Saad bin Ubada, the leader of Al-Khazraj
[Machine] "When the verse of (24:4) was revealed, Sa'd bin 'Ubada said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if I see someone committing adultery with my own eyes, I cannot gather four witnesses until the last person has finished his need.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Listen to what your leader says.'"
48.24 [Machine] Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammah
[Machine] "When the following verse was revealed: 'O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.' [Quran 49:2] Thabit bin Qays said, 'By Allah, I used to raise my voice in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I fear that Allah may become angry with me because of it and I become saddened and pale because of it.' So the Prophet ﷺ asked about him. It was said, 'O Prophet of Allah, he says: Indeed, I fear that I will be among the people of the Hellfire, for I used to raise my voice in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ .' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Rather, he is among the people of Paradise.' He said, 'So we would see him walking among us, a man from the people of Paradise.'"
[Machine] Thabit bin Qais bin Shammash, the envoy of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, delivered a speech in Medina and said, "We prevent you from what we prevent ourselves and our children, so what is for us?" He replied, "Paradise." They said, "We are satisfied."
48.25 [Machine] Muadh bin Jabal
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Recite four (Surahs): Abdullah bin Mas'ud mentioned Surah Umm Hafsa, Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, and Ubayy bin Ka'b, and Mu'adh bin Jabal."
48.26 [Machine] Mu'adh ibn 'Amr ibn al-Jamuḥ
narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What an excellent man is Abu Bakr, what an excellent man is 'Umar, what an excellent man is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, what an excellent man is Usaid bin Hudair, what an excellent man is Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas, what an excellent man is Mua'dh bin Jabal, and what an excellent man is Mu'adh bin 'Amr bin Al-Jamuh." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3795)
48.27 [Machine] Harithah ibn al-Nu'man
[Machine] That Umm Haritha came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Haritha had died on the day of Badr and was struck by an arrow. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, you knew the status of Haritha in my heart, so if he is in Paradise, I will not cry over him, otherwise you will see what I will do." He said to her, "Are there not just one or multiple gardens? Indeed, there are many gardens and surely he is in the highest Firdaws."
[Machine] Haritha, the cousin of my aunt, set off on the day of Badr wearing armor when he went out to fight. He was struck by an arrow that killed him. My aunt, his mother, came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if my son Haritha is in Paradise, then be patient and have hope. If not, you will see what I will do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O mother of Haritha, there are many gardens in Paradise, and Haritha is in the highest level of Paradise, Al-Firdaus."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I slept and saw myself in Paradise, and I heard the recitation of a reader." So I said, "Whose recitation is this?" It was said, "It is the recitation of Harithah bin Nu'man." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is righteousness, that is righteousness, that is righteousness. And he was one of the most righteous towards his mother."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "I saw myself in Paradise, and while I was there, I heard the voice of a man reciting the Quran." So I asked, "Who is this?" They said, "It is Haritha bin Nu'man. That is righteousness, that is righteousness, that is righteousness."
48.28 [Machine] Bilal ibn Rabah
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was shown that I entered paradise and I heard footsteps in front of me." So I asked, "Who is this, O Gabriel?" He said, "This is Bilal. Whenever the wind blows his white robe, a maiden approaches." So I asked, "Whose is this, O Gabriel?" He said, "This is for Umar ibn al-Khattab."
Bilal, narrate to me which act at the time of morning prayer you did in Islam for which you hope to receive good reward, for I heard during the night the sound of your steps before me in Paradise. Bilal said: I did not do any act in Islam for which I hope to get any benefit but this that when I perform complete ablution during the night or day I observe prayer with that purification what Allah has ordained for me to pray. (Using translation from Muslim 2458)
We were six men in the company of Messenger of Allah (, nay peace be upon him) that the polytheists said to Allah's Apostle ﷺ: Drive them away so that they may not be overbold upon us. He said: I, Ibn Mas'ud and a person from the tribe of Hudhail, Bilal and two other persons, whose names I do not know (were amongst such persons). And there occurred to Messenger of Allah ﷺ what. Allah wished and he talked with himself that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed:" Do not drive away those who call their Lord morning and evening desiring to seek His pleasure." (Using translation from Muslim 2413b)

48.29 [Machine] Ubayy ibn Ka'b
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ubay ibn Ka'b, "Verily, Allah has commanded me to recite the Quran to you." He said, "And He named me specifically?" He said, "He called you by name." So he wept.
[Machine] "To me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have been commanded to recite the Quran to you.' I asked, 'Was I mentioned there?' He replied, 'Yes.' Upon hearing this, Ubayy wept and said, 'I do not know if it was due to longing or fear.'"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ performed the Fajr prayer and left out a verse. He then asked, "Is Ubayy ibn Ka'b present?" Ubayy responded, "Yes, Messenger of Allah." Ubayy then asked, "Did you forget a verse or has it been abrogated?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I forgot it."
ʿAbdullah bin Masud was mentioned before ʿAbdullah bin ʿAmr who said, "That is a man I still love, as I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying 'Learn the recitation of Qur'an from four from ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud -- he started with him--Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudaifa, Muʿadh bin Jabal and Ubai bin Kaʿb." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3808)
The Messenger of Allah said: The most merciful of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr; the one who adheres most sternly to the religion of Allah is 'Umar; the most sincere of them in shyness and modesty is 'Uthman; the best judge is 'Ali bin Abu Talib; the best in reciting the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b; the most knowledgeable of what is lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal; and the most knowledgeable of the rules of inheritance (Fara'id) is Zaid bin Thabit. And every nation has a trustworthy guardian, and the trustworthy guardian of this Ummah is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Jarrah." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 154)

narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What an excellent man is Abu Bakr, what an excellent man is 'Umar, what an excellent man is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, what an excellent man is Usaid bin Hudair, what an excellent man is Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas, what an excellent man is Mua'dh bin Jabal, and what an excellent man is Mu'adh bin 'Amr bin Al-Jamuh." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3795)
I was afraid lest it should trample (his son) Yahya. I stood near it (the horse) and saw something like a canopy over my head with what seemed to be lamps in it, rising up in the sky till it disappeared. I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the next day and said: Messenger of Allah, I recited the Qur'an during the night in my enclosure and my horse began to jump. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You should have kept on reciting, Ibn Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: I recited. It jumped (as before). Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ again said: You should have kept on reciting, Ibn Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: I recited and it again jumped (as before). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ again said: You should kave kept on reciting, Ibu Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: (Messenger of Allah) I finished (the recitation) for Yahya was near (the horse) and I was afraid lest it should trample him. I saw something like a canopy with what seemed to be lamps in it rising up in the sky till it disappeared. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Those were the angels who listened to you; and if you had continued reciting, the people would have seen them in the morning and they would not have concealed themselves from them.
[Machine] That Sa'id ibn Hudaayr and 'Abbaad ibn Bishr were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a dark night in Hindis, so they left from him and one of them's staff illuminated, so they began to walk with its light, and when they separated, the other's staff illuminated.
48.32 [Machine] Julaybib
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met the enemy and asked, "Have you lost anyone?" They replied, "Yes, we have lost so-and-so and so-and-so." He then asked, "Have you lost anyone in the second group?" They said, "No." He said, "But I have lost Juleibib. Go and look for him among the dead bodies." When they found him, he had killed seven (opponents), and they had killed him. They informed the Prophet ﷺ who came and stood over him. He said, "He is from me and I am from him. He killed seven (opponents), and then they killed him." He repeated this statement twice. Then, he carried him on his shoulder, and there was no stretcher except the shoulder of the Prophet ﷺ, until he was dug a grave and buried, without having been washed.

[Machine] "He [the Prophet] brought Abu Qatilah on the day of Uhud, and Fatima, his sister, started crying for him." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not cry for him, as the angels are still shading him with their wings until he is lifted."

48.35 [Machine] Abdullah ibn Rawahah
[Machine] Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, the Persian messenger of Allah's Messenger ﷺ , narrated: Allah's Messenger ﷺ sent the army of the leaders and said, "Zaid bin Harithah is your leader. If Zaid is martyred, then Ja'far bin Abi Talib should take over. If Ja'far is martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawahah should step forward." Ja'far stood up and said, "By my father and mother! I have never been afraid to be assigned under Zaid." Zaid replied, "Go, for you do not know in which of the two is goodness for you." So they left and stayed as long as Allah willed. Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ ascended the pulpit and ordered the congregational prayer to be called. He said, "Shall I inform you about your army, this warrior? They set off and encountered the enemy. Zaid was martyred, so seek forgiveness for him and people sought forgiveness for him." Ja'far bin Abi Talib took the banner and fought fiercely until he was martyred. He bore witness to him with martyrdom, so seek forgiveness for him. Then, Abdullah bin Rawahah took the flag and held his ground until he was martyred. Seek forgiveness for him too. Then, Khalid bin Al-Walid, who was not one of the leaders, took command upon himself. Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ raised his two fingers and said, "O Allah! It is a sword among Your swords, so grant it victory." Then he said, "March forward and strengthen your brothers, and let no one hesitate." So the people went forth in intense heat, by foot and on horseback.

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Anyone who walks on the earth, surely he is from the people of paradise except for Abdullah ibn Salam."
[Machine] When Mu'adh was on his deathbed, it was said to him, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, give us advice." He said, "Let me sit up." He then said, "Indeed, knowledge and faith are in their places, whoever seeks them will find them." He repeated this statement three times. So seek knowledge from four companions: from Uwaimir Abu al-Darda, from Salman al-Farsi, from Abdullah bin Mas'ud, and from Abdullah bin Salam who was Jewish and embraced Islam. For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Indeed, he will be in the company of the ten in Paradise."
When ʿAbdullah bin Salam heard the arrival of the Prophet ﷺ at Medina, he came to him and said, "I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a prophet: What is the first portent of the Hour? What will be the first meal taken by the people of Paradise? Why does a child resemble its father, and why does it resemble its maternal uncle" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gabriel has just now told me of their answers." ʿAbdullah said, "He (i.e. Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the east to the west; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be Extra-lobe (caudate lobe) of fish-liver. As for the resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets discharge first, the child will resemble her." On that ʿAbdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." ʿAbdullah bin Salam further said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The Jews are liars, and if they should come to know about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they would tell a lie about me." The Jews came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ʿAbdullah went inside the house. Allah's Apostle asked (the Jews), "What kind of man is ʿAbdullah bin Salam amongst you?" They replied, "He is the most learned person amongst us, and the best amongst us, and the son of the best amongst us." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What do you think if he embraces Islam (will you do as he does)?" The Jews said, "May Allah save him from it." Then ʿAbdullah bin Salam came out in front of them saying, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah." Thereupon they said, "He is the evilest among us, and the son of the evilest amongst us," and continued talking badly of him. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3329)

ʿWhoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd.ʿ Umar bin al-Khattab narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said... a similar report, in which he said: crisp or fresh. (Using translation from Aḥmad 35)

[Machine] We gathered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the house of Abu Bakr. Then we went out and heard a man reciting in the mosque, so we listened. It was said that a man from the Muhajireen was praying. He said, "Ask him for three things." Then he said, "Whoever wants to recite the Quran smoothly as it was revealed, let him recite it as Ibn Umm Abd recites it."
[Machine] Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to review the Quran every year, and it was reviewed twice in the year he passed away. Abdullah witnessed what was repealed.
I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Learn the recitation of Qur'an from four persons: Ibn Masʿud, Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Ubai and Muʿadh bin Jabal." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3806)
