48. Virtues of the Companions
٤٨۔ كِتَابُ الْمَنَاقِبِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ubay ibn Ka'b, "Verily, Allah has commanded me to recite the Quran to you." He said, "And He named me specifically?" He said, "He called you by name." So he wept.
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ» قَالَ وَسَمَّانِي قَالَ «سَمَّاكَ» فَبَكَى
[Machine] "To me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have been commanded to recite the Quran to you.' I asked, 'Was I mentioned there?' He replied, 'Yes.' Upon hearing this, Ubayy wept and said, 'I do not know if it was due to longing or fear.'"
لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقْرِئَكَ الْقُرْآنَ» قَالَ أَوَ ذُكِرْتُ هُنَاكَ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» فَبَكَى أُبَيٌّ قَالَ «وَلَا أَدْرِي شَوْقًا أَوْ خَوْفًا»
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ performed the Fajr prayer and left out a verse. He then asked, "Is Ubayy ibn Ka'b present?" Ubayy responded, "Yes, Messenger of Allah." Ubayy then asked, "Did you forget a verse or has it been abrogated?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I forgot it."
صَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْفَجْرَ فَتَرَكَ آيَةً فَقَالَ «أَفِي الْقَوْمِ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ؟» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ «نَسِيتَ آيَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا أَوَ نُسِخَتْ؟» قَالَ «نُسِّيتُهَا»
ʿAbdullah bin Masud was mentioned before ʿAbdullah bin ʿAmr who said, "That is a man I still love, as I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying 'Learn the recitation of Qur'an from four from ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud -- he started with him--Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudaifa, Muʿadh bin Jabal and Ubai bin Kaʿb." قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خُذُوا الْقُرْآنَ مِنْ أَرْبَعَةٍ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ وَمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ وَسَالِمٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ
The Messenger of Allah said: The most merciful of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr; the one who adheres most sternly to the religion of Allah is 'Umar; the most sincere of them in shyness and modesty is 'Uthman; the best judge is 'Ali bin Abu Talib; the best in reciting the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b; the most knowledgeable of what is lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal; and the most knowledgeable of the rules of inheritance (Fara'id) is Zaid bin Thabit. And every nation has a trustworthy guardian, and the trustworthy guardian of this Ummah is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Jarrah." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 154)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «أَرْحَمُ أُمَّتِي بِأُمَّتِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأَشَدُّهُمْ فِي أَمْرِ اللهِ عُمَرُ وَأَصْدَقُهُمْ حَيَاءً عُثْمَانُ وَأَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَأَفْرَضُهُمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالْحَلَالِ وَالْحَرَامِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ أَلَا وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ أَمَةٍ أَمِينًا أَلَا وَإِنَّ أَمِينَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ»
