38. Division of Charity (2/3)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Charity is not permissible for a wealthy person unless it is given to five people: a person who works for it, or a person who buys it with his money, or a needy person who is endowed with it and then gives it to a wealthy person, or a debt-laden person, or a warrior in the cause of Allah." At-Thawri narrated it from Zaid and said, "Layth narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ , and sometimes a man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated it, and Abu Azhar As-Saliti narrated it from Abdul Razzaq, from Ma'mar, and At-Thawri narrated it from Zaid ibn Aslam, as well."
Umar employed me to collect the sadaqah. When I finished doing so and gave it to him, he ordered payment to be given to me. I said: I did only for Allah’s sake, and my reward will come from Allah. He said: Take what you are given, for I acted (as a collector) during the time of the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) and he assigned me a payment. Thereupon, I said the same kind of thing as you have said, to which Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said: When you are given something without asking for it, you should use it for your own purpose and as sadaqah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1647)
[Machine] In Abdullah bin Umar, there was a man who was appointed to distribute charity. He excused me from going with him and gave me my sustenance while I stayed at home.
38.16 [Machine] Nothing is hidden from it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O people, whoever among you has worked for us and concealed from us as much as a thread, it will be a burden that he carries on the Day of Resurrection." Then, a man with dark complexion stood up, looking like an Ansari. He said, "Pardon me for my work." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is that?" The man replied, "I heard you saying what you said, and now I say it too. Whoever has been employed by us should come to us with both his small and large earnings. Whatever is given to him, he should take, and whatever is prohibited, he should abstain from." Abu Tahir informed us, Hajib ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Abdur-Rahim ibn Munib narrated to us, Al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us, Ismail ibn Abi Khalid narrated to us, from Qays, from Adi ibn Amr al-Kindi, that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say the same. The only difference is that he said, "Then, a man from the Ansar stood up, being black, as if I can see him." He said, "Your work, O Messenger of Allah." He also said in the end, "Whatever I have been given, I have taken, and whatever I have been prohibited from, I have abstained from."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ employed an employee (to collect Zakat). The employee returned after completing his job and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! This (amount of Zakat) is for you, and this (other amount) was given to me as a present." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Why didn't you stay at your father's or mother's house and see if you would be given presents or not?" Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up in the evening after the prayer, and having testified that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and praised and glorified Allah as He deserved, he said, "Now then ! What about an employee whom we employ and then he comes and says, 'This amount (of Zakat) is for you, and this (amount) was given to me as a present'? Why didn't he stay at the house of his father and mother to see if he would be given presents or not? By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, none of you will steal anything of it (i.e. Zakat) but will bring it by carrying it over his neck on the Day of Resurrection. If it has been a camel, he will bring it (over his neck) while it will be grunting, and if it has been a cow, he will bring it (over his neck), while it will be mooing; and if it has been a sheep, he will bring it (over his neck) while it will be bleeding." The Prophet ﷺ added, "I have preached you (Allah's Message)." Abu Humaid said, "Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands so high that we saw the whiteness of his armpits." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6636)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The owner of a monopolistic business will not enter Paradise." Yazid ibn Harun, or he said Al-Ash'ari, asked, "What about if he gives charity and donates?"
38.17 [Machine] The superiority of the worker over charity in truth.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The worker for charity with truthfulness is like a warrior in the cause of Allah until he returns to his home."
38.18 [Machine] Who should be given from the authors whose hearts are pierced by the arrow of interests, a fifth of the spoils and the booty that is acquired, even if he is a Muslim
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the Battle of Hunayn, people were asking him questions. A camel surrounded him and grabbed hold of his cloak that was on a tree branch. He said, "Return my cloak to me. Do you fear that I am stingy? If Allah were to give me blessings like the abundance of dates from Dumat al-Jandal, I would distribute it among you, and yet you would not find me to be stingy, cowardly, or a liar." Then he took a handful from the top of his camel's saddle and said, "What do I have that Allah has given you? There is nothing like this except for the fifth (khums), which is due from you. Return the thread and the needle, for the stolen goods are disgraceful and unlawful."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , Ibn 'Ajlan, 'Amr ibn Shuayb, his father, and his grandfather, Yazid, one of them said to his companion, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Nothing of what Allah, the Majestic and Exalted, has rightfully bestowed upon you is permissible for me, except for one-fifth, and it is to be returned to you.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I do not have any share of this booty except for a fifth, and the fifth is to be returned to you." Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "By 'the fifth', it means its rightful share from the fifth, and by 'to be returned to you', it means in your best interest."
You allot the share of my booty and that of my horse between 'Uyaina and Aqra'. Both Uyaina and Aqra' are in no way more eminent than Mirdas (my father) in the assembly. I am in no way inferior to any one of these persons. And he who is let down today would not be elevated. He (the narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then completed one hundred camels for him. (Using translation from Muslim 1060a)
When Allah favored His Apostle with the properties of Hawazin tribe as Fai (booty), he started giving to some Quarries men even up to one-hundred camels each, whereupon some Ansari men said about Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "May Allah forgive His Apostle! He is giving to (men of) Quraish and leaves us, in spite of the fact that our swords are still dropping blood (of the infidels)" When Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of what they had said, he called the Ansar and gathered them in a leather tent and did not call anybody else along, with them. When they gathered, Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and said, "What is the statement which, I have been informed, and that which you have said?" The learned ones among them replied," O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The wise ones amongst us did not say anything, but the youngsters amongst us said, 'May Allah forgive His Apostle; he gives the Quarish and leaves the Ansar, in spite of the fact that our swords are still dribbling (wet) with the blood of the infidels.' " Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, I give to such people as are still close to the period of Infidelity (i.e. they have recently embraced Islam and Faith is still weak in their hearts). Won't you be pleased to see people go with fortune, while you return with Messenger of Allah ﷺ to your houses? By Allah, what you will return with, is better than what they are returning with." The Ansar replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we are satisfied' Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them." You will find after me, others being preferred to you. Then be patient till you meet Allah and meet His Apostle at Al-Kauthar (i.e. a fount in Paradise)." (Anas added:) But we did not remain patient. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3147)

ʿAmr bin Taghlib said, "Some property was given to the Prophet ﷺ and he gave it to some people and withheld it from some others. Then he came to know that they (the latter) were dissatisfied. So the Prophet said, 'I give to one man and leave (do not give) another, and the one to whom I do not give is dearer to me than the one to whom I give. I give to some people because of the impatience and discontent present in their hearts, and leave other people because of the content and goodness Allah has bestowed on them, and one of them is ʿAmr bin Taghlib." ʿAmr bin Taghlib said, "The sentence which Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in my favor is dearer to me than the possession of nice red camels." (Using translation from Bukhārī 7535)
He (the Holy Prophet) gave to the chiefs of Najd and ignored us. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have done it with a view to conciliating between them. Then there came a person with thick beard, prominent cheeks, deep sunken eyes and protruding forehead and shaven head. He said: Muhammad, fear Allah. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I disobey Allah, who would then obey Him? Have I not been (sent as the) most trustworthy among the people of the world? But you do not repose trust in me." That person then went back. A person among the people then sought permission (from the Holy Prophet) for his murder. According to some, it was Khalid b. Walid who sought the permission. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: From this very person's posterity there would arise people who would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat; they would kill the followers of Islam and would spare the idol-worshippers. They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Ad. (Using translation from Muslim 1064a)

He asked: On loan or by force? He replied: No, but on loan. So he lent him coats of mail numbering between thirty and forty! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought the battle of Hunayn. When the polytheists were defeated, the coats of mail of Safwan were collected. Some of them were lost. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Safwan: We have lost some coats of mail from your coats of mail. Should we pay compensation to you? He replied: No. Messenger of Allah, for I have in my heart today what I did not have that day. Abu Dawud said: He lent him before embracing Islam. Then he embraced Islam. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to Safwan ibn Umayyah regarding a tool that was mentioned to him. He asked him for it, and Safwan said, "Where is the security? Will you take it by force?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you want to keep your tool, then keep it. But if you show it to me, it will be a guarantee for me until I return it to you." Safwan said, "There is no problem with that, and I have shown it to you." On that day, he gave him one hundred shields and their tools. Safwan was heavily armed, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Carry them for us." So Safwan carried them. Then he mentioned the incident in the Battle of Hunayn, where a man from the Quraysh passed by Safwan ibn Umayyah and said to him, "Rejoice in Muhammad's defeat and the defeat of his companions." Safwan said to him, "Have you given me good news about the appearance of the Bedouins? By Allah, a lord from the Quraysh is dearer to me than a lord from the Bedouins." Safwan ibn Umayyah then sent his servant to listen to whose slogan it was. The servant came back and said, "I heard them saying, 'O sons of Abdur-Rahman, O sons of Abdullah, O sons of Ubaidullah'." Safwan said, "Muhammad has appeared," and that was their slogan in the war. This is the wording of the hadith of Musa ibn Uqbah and the meaning of the hadith of Uruwah.

I became a guarantor for a payment, and I came to Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him). He said: Wait till I receive the sadaqah and I shall order it to be given to you. He then said : Begging, Qabisah, is allowable only to one of three classes: a man who has become a guarantor for a payment to whom begging is allowed till he gets it, after which he must stop (begging); a man who has been stricken by a calamity and it destroys his property to whom begging is allowed till he gets what will support life (or he said, what will provide a reasonable subsistence); and a man who has been smitten by poverty, about whom three intelligent members of his people confirm by saying: So and so has been smitten by poverty, to such a person begging is allowed till be gets what will support life (or he said, what will provide a reasonable subsistence), after which he must stop (begging). But if it reaches a point of distress or difficulty, then let him ask until he is able to give it to them." Abu 'Ubaid said, "Al-Fatq is war between two groups, where bloodshed and injuries occur. A man takes on the responsibility for fixing it, so he asks for it until he is able to deliver it to them." And when he says "he is self-sufficient," it means he is approaching it and close to it. And when he says "Siddadan" in terms of livelihood, it means with the breaking of the letter "sin." And everything that you use to fix a defect is considered correction.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Charity is not permissible for the wealthy, except in the way of Allah, or for the traveler, or if you have a needy neighbor and you give charity to him, then he benefits you. And if this is correct, then according to Allah's knowledge, the son of the traveler is rich in his own country, but is needy while traveling. And the narration of Ata ibn Yasar from Abu Sa'id is the most authentic, although it does not mention the son of the traveler, and Allah knows best."

A man from Banu Asad said : I and my family alighted at Baqi al-Gharqad. My wife said to me : Go the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and beg something from him for our eating, and made a mention of there need. So I went to the Messenger of Allah(May peace be upon him). I found with a man who was begging from him and he was saying to him: I have nothing to give you. The man turned away from him in anger while he was saying: By my life, you give anyone you wish. The Messenger of Allah(May peace be upon him) said : He’s anger with me, for I have nothing to give him. If any of you begs when he has an Uqiyah or its equivalent, he has begged immoderately. The man of Banu Asad said : So I said : The she camel of ours is better than an uqiyah, while an uqiyah is equivalent to 40 Dirhams. I therefore returned and did not beg from him. Afterwards some barley and raisins where brought to the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him). He gave us a share from them (or as he reported)till Allah, the Exalted, made us self-sufficient(i.e well off). Abu Dawud said: Al-Thawri narrated it as Malik narrated. When he faced me, he said, "Indeed, whoever seeks richness, Allah will enrich him. And whoever seeks chastity, Allah will make him chaste. And whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will suffice him." He said, "I said, 'He does not want anyone except me,' so I turned away and did not speak to him about anything." My mother said to me, "What did you do?" So I informed her of the matter. She said, "We will be patient, and Allah will provide us with something." She continued to whisper to us until a need arose that was more urgent than before. She said to me, "Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him for something." So I went to him while he was sitting with his companions, greeted him, and sat down. He faced me and said the same words as before, and added, "And whoever asks and has livestock, then he is mutahaffif." I said to myself, "We have a ruby, which is better than livestock." He said, "The price of the ruby is forty dirhams." So I turned back without asking him. Abu 'Ubaid reported that the ruby was a female camel.

[Machine] He heard Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah al-Ansari, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying that Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed him, and the wording is his, that Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar narrated to him, who narrated from Abu Shu'aib al-Harani, who narrated from al-Nufayliyy, who narrated from Miskin ibn Bukayr, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Muhajir, from Rabi'ah ibn Yazid, from Abu Kabsha al-Saluli. Sahl ibn al-Hanzaliyyah said, "Uyaynah ibn Hisn and al-Aqr ibn Habis came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him for something. He ordered them to be given what they had asked for. He also ordered Mu'awiyah to write for them what they had asked for. As for al-Aqr, he wrapped his letter in his turban and left. Uyaynah took his letter and went to the Prophet ﷺ . He said, 'O Muhammad, I am carrying a letter to my people. I do not know what is in it, like a sealed document.' The Prophet ﷺ took it from him and looked at it. He said, 'What I ordered for you has been written therein.' He then mentioned the hadith and said, 'Whoever asks for something and he is wealthy, he is only increasing from the Fire.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what kind of wealth is it that does not require asking?' He said, 'To have satiety for a day and night, or a night and day, without needing to ask for anything.' None of these hadiths differ, as if the Prophet ﷺ knew what would make each of them wealthy, so he made their wealth with it. This is because people differ in their sufficiency, so some are enriched with fifty dirhams, while others have income that provides them with what they need for every day's food and dinner, and they have no dependents, so they are self-sufficient with it."

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained to him about poverty. Then he returned and the Prophet said to him, "Go until you find something." He went and came back with a blanket and a bowl, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, they used to sleep on this blanket and wear it, and they used to drink from this bowl." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will take these from me for a dirham?" A man said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will give more than a dirham?" A man said, "I will take them for two dirhams." The Prophet ﷺ said, "They are yours." Then he called the man and said to him, "Buy a dirham bundle and a dirham of food for your family." He did so and then returned to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go to this valley and do not leave any travelers without helping them, do not pass by any thorns without removing them, and do not bring me anything for fifteen days." He said, "I went and helped ten people." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and buy five dirhams of food for your family." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has blessed me in what you have commanded me to do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is better for you than coming on the Day of Judgment with a dot on your face. Indeed, asking for help is only suitable for three types of people: someone with a painful wound, someone who is burdened with excessive debt, or someone who is extremely poor. The scholar said, "If he cannot fulfill his needs except with 200 or 1,000, then give him the minimum amount, as stated in the hadith of Qabeesah ibn Al-Mukhariq from the Prophet ﷺ, until he can support himself or have a sufficient livelihood. And with Allah is success."

38.27 [Machine] The man divides his charity among his relatives and neighbors, if they are from the people of Suhman, due to what is mentioned regarding maintaining family ties and the rights of neighbors.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "The womb is a drop of Allah. Whoever maintains good relations with it, Allah maintains good relations with him. And whoever severs it, Allah severs him." This is the wording of As-Saghaani and in a narration by Ad-Daarimi: "The womb is a drop of the Most Merciful."
[Machine] He (saw) heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: Allah (swt) said, "I am the Most Merciful. I have created the womb (i.e., the family bond) and I have named it after My Name. So whoever maintains it, I will maintain connection with him, and whoever cuts it off, I will cut him off."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Allah said, 'I am Allah, and I am the Most Merciful. I created the womb and derived its name from My name. So whoever maintains good ties with it, I will maintain good ties with him, and whoever severs it, I will sever ties with him."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Indeed, Allah created all of creation until, when He finished His creation, the womb said, 'This is the place of refuge from severing the ties of kinship.' He said, 'Yes, are you not pleased that I shall maintain the one who maintains you and sever the one who severs you?' It said, 'Yes, O Lord.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Recite if you wish: 'Then do you think that you will act in such a way that you will cause corruption on the earth and sever your ties of kinship? They are those whom Allah has cursed, so He has made them deaf and blinded their vision." [Surah Muhammad: 23]
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and in another narration from Ibn 'Uyaynah from the Prophet ﷺ saying, "A person who cuts off ties will not enter Paradise."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who maintains ties of kinship is not the one who reciprocates, but rather the one who reconciles when the relationship is cut off."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, ties of kinship are attached to the Throne, and not connected by blood relations. Rather, the one who maintains ties of kinship is the one whose ties are severed, yet they still maintain them."
