38. Division of Charity
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to ask if something brought to him was a gift or charity. If they said it was a gift, he would extend his hand to receive it. And if they said it was charity, he would say to his companions, "Take it and give it as charity." This hadith has a similar meaning to the one narrated by Muhammad ibn Ziyad from Abu Hurairah.
Whenever a meal was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would ask whether it was a gift or Sadaqa (something given in charity). If he was told that it was Sadaqa, he would tell his companions to eat it, but if it was a gift, he would hurry to share it with them. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2576)
