38. Division of Charity (3/3)
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: 'Whoever wishes to have his provision expanded and his lifespan prolonged, should maintain good relations with his relatives.'"
[Machine] "The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Verily, your charity towards the poor is one charity, and towards your relatives it is two charities: a charity and a connection.' Abu Al-Abbas said, 'It is actually called "Sulay" with the letter "Saad" (ص).'
[Machine] Sufyanah used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at both Qiblas. She said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best charity is that given by a person who has little but still gives from it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gabriel kept advising me about treating neighbors well until I thought he would make them inherit from me."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gabriel continued to advise me regarding the neighbor until I thought or assumed that he would make him an heir to the inheritance of the next of kin." And in the narration of Ibn Mihnāl, 'Umar bin Muhammad bin Zaid bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar narrated it, and he did not say, "I assumed."
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbors, so which one should I start with?" He said, "Start with the one who is closer to you in terms of proximity."
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbors, to whom should I give a gift?" He replied, "To the one closer to you in proximity."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have two neighbors and would like to know to which of them I should give presents." He replied, "To the one whose door is nearer to you." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2259)
38.28 [Machine] The one who is responsible for his children and parents does not give from his share to the poor and needy.
[Machine] He said, "Do not give it to someone who is dependent."
38.29 [Machine] A woman spends from her Zakat on her husband when he is in need.
[Machine] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, will it suffice for us to give charity to a poor spouse and orphaned children in our neighborhood?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You will receive the reward of charity and the reward of maintaining family ties."
38.30 [Machine] The family of Muhammad ﷺ does not receive from obligatory charities.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so much that he leaned back, then he said, "Have you not noticed that we do not eat charity?"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was brought dates as charity at the market. He would receive some dates from his own dates and others from other people's dates until he had a heap of dates. Al-Hasan ibn Ali began playing with those dates, took one date, and put it in his mouth. The Prophet ﷺ looked at him, took it out of his mouth, and said, "Do you not know that the family of Muhammad does not eat charity?"
I go back to my family and I find a date lying on my bed. I then take it up to eat it, but then I throw it away fearing that it may be a Sadaqa. (Using translation from Muslim 1070a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ found a date and said, "If it were not for the fact that I fear it may be a charity, I would have eaten it."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to see a date and if it wasn't for the fact that he saw it as charity, he would have eaten it.
[Machine] And by Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not favor us over the people in anything except for three things. He ordered us to perform ablution properly, he ordered us not to eat charity, and he ordered us not to let saddle blankets on horses hang down on their backs.
[Machine] My father gave him camels from the charity. He said: Abu Dawood narrated to us, narrating from Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah and Muhammad ibn Al-Ala'a, they said: It was narrated by his son, from his father, from Al-A'mash, from Salim, from Kurayb, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, from Ibn Abbas, similar to this. It was added: "Instead of it." And this can only be understood in two ways: One is that it was before the prohibition of giving charity to Banu Hashim, then it was abrogated by what came after. The other is that Abbas borrowed camels from the poor, then returned them from the camels of the charity. We have narrated in the book of Zakah what indicates that, and Allah knows best.
38.31 [Machine] Statement of the family of Muhammad ﷺ who are prohibited from receiving obligatory charity.
[Machine] I heard Zaid bin Arqam saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood amongst us one day as a preacher and praised Allah and glorified Him. Then he said, 'O people, I am only a human being and the Messenger of my Lord will soon come to me, and I will respond to him. I am leaving among you two weighty things: the first is the Book of Allah in which there is guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it.' He exhorted and encouraged (us) to do so. Then he said, 'And the people of my household, I remind you of Allah with regards to the people of my household.' Husein said to Zaid, 'Who are the people of his household?' Zaid replied, 'The members of his household are his wives.' Husein said, 'Yes, indeed. The wives of the Prophet ﷺ are the members of his household, but what I meant are those who are forbidden from receiving charity after his death.' Zaid said, 'They are the family of Ali, the family of Aqil, the family of Jafar, and the family of Abbas.' Husein said, 'All of them are forbidden from receiving charity?' Zaid replied, 'Yes.'

By Allah, if we had sent these two young boys (i. e. I and Fadl b. 'Abbas) to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they had spoken to him, he would have appointed them (as the collectors) of these sadaqat; and they would (collect them) and pay (to the Holy Prophet) as other people (collectors) paid and would get a share as other people got it. As they were talking about it there came 'Ali b. Abu Talib and stood before them, and they made a mention of it to him. 'Ali b. Abu Talib said: Don't do that; by Allah he (the Holy Prophet) would not do that (would not accept your request). Rabi'a b. Harith turned to him and said: By Allah, you are not doing so but out of jealousy that you nurse against us By Allah, you became the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ but we felt no jealousy against you (for this great privilege of yours). 'Ali then said: Send them (if you like). They set out and 'Ali lay on the bed. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the noon prayer. we went ahead of him to his apartment and stood near it till he came out. He took hold of our ears (out of love and affection) and then said: Give out what you have kept in your hearts. He then entered (the apartment) and we also went in and he (the Holy Prophet) was on that day (in the house of) Zainab b. jahsh. We urged each (of us) to speak. Then one of us thus spoke: Messenger of Allah, you are the best of humanity and the best to cement the ties of blood-relations. We have reached the-marriageable age. We have come (to you) so that you may appoint us (as collectors) of these sadaqat. and we would pay you just as thin people (other collectors) pay you, and get our share as others get it. He (the Holy Prophet) kept silence for a long time till we wished that we should speak with him (again), and Zainab pointied to us from behind the curtain not to talk (any more). He (the Holy Prophet) said; It does not become the family of Muhammad (to accept) sadaqat for they are the impurities of people. You call to me Mahmiya (and he was in charge of khums, i. e, of the one-fifth part that goes to the treasury out of the spoils of war), and Naufal b. Harith b. 'Abd al-Muttalib. They both came to him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said to Mahmiya: Marry your daughter to this young man (i. e. Fadl b. 'Abbas), and he married her to him And he said to Naufal b. Harith: Marry your daughter to this young man (i e. 'Abd al-Muttalib b. Rabi'a, the narrator of this hadith) and he married her to me, and he said to Mahmiya: Pay so much mahr on behalf of both of them from this khums Zuhri, however. said: He did not determine (the amount of mahr). (Using translation from Muslim 1072a)

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man from the Banu Makhzoom tribe to collect charity. He said to Abu Rafa'ah, "Accompany me so that some of it may reach you." Abu Rafa'ah replied, "No, not until I come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him." So he set off to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Charity does not become permissible for us, and the master of a people cannot take it from his own people." Then Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah reported to us, who informed Abu Amr ibn Matar, who narrated from Al-Fadl ibn Al-Habbab Al-Jumahi, who mentioned it in a similar manner.

He said, "O Abu Rafi, charity is forbidden for the family of Muhammad, and the narrations of Shu'bah from Al-Hakam are more reliable than the narration of Ibn Abi Layla. And Ibn Abi Layla was weak in memory and had many doubts."

Al-Bukhari said, and Abu Dawood also said, mentioning and narrating it from another perspective, from Shu'bah."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to ask if something brought to him was a gift or charity. If they said it was a gift, he would extend his hand to receive it. And if they said it was charity, he would say to his companions, "Take it and give it as charity." This hadith has a similar meaning to the one narrated by Muhammad ibn Ziyad from Abu Hurairah.
Whenever a meal was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would ask whether it was a gift or Sadaqa (something given in charity). If he was told that it was Sadaqa, he would tell his companions to eat it, but if it was a gift, he would hurry to share it with them. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2576)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man said that he would give something in charity. He went out with his object of charity and unknowingly gave it to a thief. Next morning the people said that he had given his object of charity to a thief. (On hearing that) he said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. I will give alms again." And so he again went out with his alms and (unknowingly) gave it to an adulteress. Next morning the people said that he had given his alms to an adulteress last night. The man said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I gave my alms) to an adulteress. I will give alms again." So he went out with his alms again and (unknowingly) gave it to a rich person. (The people) next morning said that he had given his alms to a wealthy person. He said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I had given alms) to a thief, to an adulteress and to a wealthy man." Then someone came and said to him, "The alms which you gave to the thief, might make him abstain from stealing, and that given to the adulteress might make her abstain from illegal sexual intercourse (adultery), and that given to the wealthy man might make him take a lesson from it and spend his wealth which Allah has given him, in Allah's cause." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1421)

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, my father, my grandfather, and a man proposed to me and I married him. I argued with him and my father gave me dinars to give in charity. I placed them with a man in the mosque and went to retrieve them. I took them and brought them back to my father. He said, 'By Allah, I did not mean for you to do that.' So, I argued with him in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to me, 'Yazid, you had no intention in this, and you, Ma'n, what did you take?'"

[Machine] I heard Ma'n ibn Yazid say, "I argued with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so he struck me and married me off. I pledged allegiance to him, as did my grandfather." I said to him, "What was your argument with him?" He said, "There was a man who would go to the mosque and give charity to people he knew. So one night he came with a bundle and thought I was one of the people he knew. When it became clear to him in the morning, he came to me and said, 'Return it.' But I refused. So we argued and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He allowed me to keep the charity and said, 'You will be rewarded according to your intention.' The elder said, 'It seems that the person who gave charity was a non-Arab.' Allah knows best."

[Machine] I went to the Prophet ﷺ with Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah to have him anoint me. So I approached him and he had a bottle of musk with him, which is used to scent the charity camels.
When Um Sulaim gave birth to a child. she said to me, "O Anas! Watch this boy carefully and do not give him anything to eat or drink until you have taken him to the Prophet ﷺ tomorrow morning for the Tahnik." So the next morning I took the child to the Prophet ﷺ who was sitting in a garden and was wearing a Huraithiya Khamisa and was branding the she-camel on which he had come during the Conquest of Mecca. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5824)
[Machine] And he had nine vessels, so no fruit or dessert could be made except that he would put it in one of those vessels. He would then send it to the Prophet's wives, and the one who would send it to Hafsah was the last one. If there was any shortage in it, it would be in Hafsah's share. He would then put some of the meat of those slaughtered animals in those vessels and send it to the Prophet's wives. He would order the remaining meat to be cooked, and he would invite the immigrants and the Ansar to come and eat from it. Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This indicates that Umar used to designate specific portions for jizyah, charity, and this is what we say.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a donkey that had been branded on its face and its nostrils were being smoked. He said, "May Allah curse the one who did this. Didn't he know that no one should brand the face or strike the face of any living being?"
By Allah, I do not cauterise (the animal) but on a part at a distance from the face, and commanded (for the cauterisation) of his ass and it was cauterised on the buttocks and he was the first to cauterise on the buttocks. (Using translation from Muslim 2118)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ saw a donkey that had been branded on its face and said, "Did I not forbid this?" Al-Abbas replied, "Yes, indeed, it is only permissible to brand in a place far from the face." So, it was branded on its hindquarters.
[Machine] I went to the Prophet ﷺ with some camels that I had branded. He said, "O Junadah, have you found any bone on it to brand it except the face?" He said, "You have to brand it on its shoulders." So I brought Ibn Labun and Ibnat Labun and a wine-skin containing wine (for the Prophet) who said, "Drink." I said, "It is wine." He said, "Drink." So I drank it and he said, "Drink again," and I drank it. Then he said it the third time and I drank it. So he said, "O Junadah! Carry on drinking until you become intoxicated!" And Allah knows whether (after getting intoxicated), I will ever be able to pass urine again in the future. So I became intoxicated and tried to stand up but I was unable to do it, so I went to the barber thinking that he would cut my hair for me but he refused to do so. Then I came to Abu Talha and I asked him to cut my hair but he refused and said, "By Allah, we did not see the indication of intoxication on you!" Then I came to Umar and asked him to cut my hair for me but he refused. When I repeated my barber for the third time, the barber said, "How I wish I had done so (accepted his request)!" So he cut my hair and when I left, I perceived that I was walking in the air (and not on the earth). When I reached the Prophet, he said, "I think that I advised you something which Allah had concealed from you?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Be afraid of Allah. O Junadah!" I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall I make a statement in people's presence?" He said, "Do not give statement before a gathering, keep on repeating the Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and saying those words which are said after the prayers (subhan Allah, walhamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar)."
