[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "The prayer from one prayer to the next is an expiation (for the sins committed between them), and Friday prayer to Friday prayer is an expiation, and Ramadan to Ramadan is an expiation, except for sins that are major. He said: So we knew that it is an order except for polytheism with Allah, breaking a deal, and abandoning the Sunnah. He said: We said, O Messenger of Allah, we know what polytheism with Allah is, so what is breaking a deal and abandoning the Sunnah? He said: Breaking a deal is when you sell something to someone and then you fight him with your sword, and abandoning the Sunnah is leaving the congregation."

I said to ʿAdī b. Ḥātim: A report has reached me about you, and I would like to hear it from you. He (ʿAdī) said: Yes. When I heard of the appearance of the Messenger of God ﷺ, I disliked his emergence with an intense dislike, so I set out until I reached the land of the Byzantines, until I came to Caesar. He said: But I hated that place even more than I hated his appearance, so I said: By God, I will certainly go to this man: if he is lying, it will not harm me, and if he is truthful, I will know.

He said: So I arrived and went to him, and when I entered upon him the people said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim! ʿAdī b. Ḥātim! He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “O ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, accept Islam and you will be safe,” three times. I said: I am upon a religion. He said: “I know your religion better than you do.” I said: You know my religion better than I do? He said: “Yes. Are you not from the Rakūsiyyah, and do you not consume the mirbāʿ of your people?” I said: Yes. He said: “That is not lawful for you in your religion.” He said: No sooner had he said it than I humbled myself to it.

Then he said: “Indeed I know what keeps you from Islam: you say, ‘Only the weak among people and those with no power have followed him, and the Arabs have cast them aside.’ Do you know al-Ḥīrah?” I said: I have not seen it, though I have heard of it. He said: “By the One in whose hand is my soul, God will surely bring this matter to completion, until a woman in a howdah sets out from al-Ḥīrah and goes around the House ˹of Allah˺, fearing none but Allah; and the treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz will surely be opened.” I said: Kisrā b. Hurmuz? He said: “Yes, Kisrā ibn Hurmuz; and wealth will surely become so abundant that no one will accept it.”

ʿAdī said: I have seen the woman in a howdah set out from al-Ḥīrah and go around the House without any protection; and I was among those who opened the treasures of Kisrā ibn Hurmuz; and by the One in whose hand is my soul, the third will surely come to pass, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it.

ʿUmar passed by Talhah, and he narrated a similar report. He said: ‘Umar passed by Talhah and saw him looking worried. He said: Perhaps you are upset because your cousin was appointed (as caliph)? - referring to Abu Bakr. He said: No, but by Allah, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿI know a word which, if a man says it when he is dying, it will be light in the record of his deeds, or he will find comfort in it at the time of death.ʿ ‘Umar said: I will tell you of it; it is the word that he wanted his paternal uncle to say, the testimony that there is no god but Allah. He said: It is as if a great burden has been lifted from me. He said: You are right. If he had known anything better that it, he would have instructed him to say it.

I embraced Islam and my (ignorance of the) religion made me anxious (to learn the essentials). I came to Abu Dharr. Abu Dharr said: The climate of Medina did not suit me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to have a few camels and goats. He said to me: Drink their milk. (The narrator Hammad said): I doubt whether he (the Prophet) said: "their urine." Abu Dharr said: I was away from the watering place and I had my family with me. I would have sexual defilement and pray without purification. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at noon. He was resting in the shade of the mosque along with a group of Companions. He (the Prophet) said: Abu Dharr. I said: Yes, I am ruined, Messenger of Allah. He said: What ruined you ? I said: I was away from the watering place and I had family with me. I used to be sexually defiled and pray without purification. He commanded (to bring) water for me. Then a black slave-girl brought a vessel of water that was shaking as the vessel was not full. I concealed myself behind a camel and took bath and them came (to the Prophet). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Abu Dharr, clean earth is a means of ablution, even if you do not find water for ten years. When you find water, you should make it touch your skin. Abu Dawud said: This is transmitted by Hammad b. Zaid from Ayyub. This version does not mention the words "their urine." This is not correct. The words "their urine" occur only in the version reported by Anas and transmitted only by the people of Basrah.

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ counted them out in my hand” - or - “in his hand: ‘At-Tasbīḥ is half of the Scale, and “All praise is due to Allah (Al-Ḥamdulillāh)” fills it, and At-Takbīr (Allāhu Akbar) fills what is between the sky and the earth, and fasting is half of patience, and purification is half of faith.”
