ahmad:18260Yazīd > Hishām b. Ḥassān > Muḥammad b. Sīrīn > Abū ʿUbaydah > a man > ʿAdī b. Ḥātim

I said to ʿAdī b. Ḥātim: A report has reached me about you, and I would like to hear it from you. He (ʿAdī) said: Yes. When I heard of the appearance of the Messenger of God ﷺ, I disliked his emergence with an intense dislike, so I set out until I reached the land of the Byzantines, until I came to Caesar. He said: But I hated that place even more than I hated his appearance, so I said: By God, I will certainly go to this man: if he is lying, it will not harm me, and if he is truthful, I will know.

He said: So I arrived and went to him, and when I entered upon him the people said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim! ʿAdī b. Ḥātim! He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “O ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, accept Islam and you will be safe,” three times. I said: I am upon a religion. He said: “I know your religion better than you do.” I said: You know my religion better than I do? He said: “Yes. Are you not from the Rakūsiyyah, and do you not consume the mirbāʿ of your people?” I said: Yes. He said: “That is not lawful for you in your religion.” He said: No sooner had he said it than I humbled myself to it.

Then he said: “Indeed I know what keeps you from Islam: you say, ‘Only the weak among people and those with no power have followed him, and the Arabs have cast them aside.’ Do you know al-Ḥīrah?” I said: I have not seen it, though I have heard of it. He said: “By the One in whose hand is my soul, God will surely bring this matter to completion, until a woman in a howdah sets out from al-Ḥīrah and goes around the House ˹of Allah˺, fearing none but Allah; and the treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz will surely be opened.” I said: Kisrā b. Hurmuz? He said: “Yes, Kisrā ibn Hurmuz; and wealth will surely become so abundant that no one will accept it.”

ʿAdī said: I have seen the woman in a howdah set out from al-Ḥīrah and go around the House without any protection; and I was among those who opened the treasures of Kisrā ibn Hurmuz; and by the One in whose hand is my soul, the third will surely come to pass, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it.

Story of Adi b. Hatim and the prophecy of the spread of Islam and the end times

ahmad:19378Muḥammad b. Abū ʿAdī > Ibn ʿAwn > Muḥammad > Ibn Ḥudhayfah > ʿAdī b. Ḥātim

I (Ibn Hudhayfah) was being told a report about ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, and I said: This is ʿAdī in the region of Kūfa; if only I would go to him so that I myself might hear it from him. So I went to him and said: I was being told a report about you, and I wanted to be the one to hear it from you.

He said: When Allah sent the Prophet ﷺ, I fled from him, until I was in the farthest land of the Muslims, on the side bordering the Romans. Then I came to dislike the place I was in, until it became more hateful to me than the place I had left. So I said: I will certainly go to this man; by Allah, if he is truthful I will surely listen to him, and if he is lying it will not harm me.

So I came to him, and the people craned their necks to look at me and said: ‘ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, ʿAdī b. Ḥātim,’ I think he said it three times. Then he said to me: "O ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, accept Islam and you will be safe." I said: I am a man of a religion. He said: "O ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, accept Islam and you will be safe." I said: "I am a man of a religion." He said it three times, then he said: "I know your religion better than you do." I said: "You know my religion better than I do?" He said: "Yes. Are you not the leader of your people?" I said: Indeed. Then he mentioned the Rakūsiyyah and said: "In your religion, the mirbāʿ is not lawful." When he said that, my soul humbled somewhat.

Then he said: "I think that what keeps you from Islam is the poverty you see among those around me, and that the people are united against us as one. Do you know the location of al-Ḥīrah?" I said: I have heard of it, but I have not come to it. He said: "Soon a woman in a howdah will set out from there without any protector until she she performs the tawaf of the Kabah; and soon the treasures of Kisrā b. Hurmuz will be opened." I said: Kisrā b. Hurmuz? He said: "Kisrā ibn Hurmuz" three times, "and soon a man will seek someone to accept his wealth as charity, and he will not find anyone."

ʿAdī said: I have indeed seen two: I saw the woman in a howdah set out from al-Ḥīrah without any protector until she performs the tawaf of the Kabah, and I was among the cavalry that raided al-Madā’in. And by Allah, the third will surely come to pass, for it is a report the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me.

[Machine] From the narration of Adi bin Hatim, who was next to me and I asked him about it. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent to the place where he was sent, and I hated him more than I ever hated anything before. So I set off until I was in the farthest part of the earth from Rome. I said to myself, 'If I see this man and he is lying, he will not be able to deceive me, and if he is truthful, I will follow him.' So I approached, and when I reached the city, the people looked at me and said, 'Adi bin Hatim has come, Adi bin Hatim has come.' The Prophet ﷺ said to me, 'O Adi bin Hatim, embrace Islam, you will be safe.' I said, 'I have a religion.' He said, 'I know more about your religion than you do. Haven’t you been a leader of your people?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Do you eat from the Sadaqah (charity)?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'That is not permissible for you in your religion.' I was shaken by this, and then he said, 'O Adi bin Hatim, embrace Islam and you will be safe. I see, or as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, there is no reason for you not to embrace Islam when you see the signs around me. You are soon to leave the state of doubt without living in a state of confusion, to go around the Kaaba, and treasures from Kisra ibn Hurmuz will be opened for us." Adi bin Hatim said, "I saw the state of doubt leaving me, without living in a state of confusion, until I went around the Kaaba. [Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the marketplace of Dhi Al-Majaz wearing a red robe, and he was saying, "O people, say there is no deity but Allah, and you will be successful." A man was following him, throwing stones at him, causing his back and heels to bleed, while saying, "O people, do not obey him, for he is a liar." I asked, "Who is this?" It was said, "He is the son of Abd Al-Muttalib." I then asked, "Who is the one who follows him and throws stones at him?" It was said, "He is Abd Al-Uzza, the father of Lahab." When Islam emerged, we left until we reached a place near Madinah, and we had with us a container of dates. While we were sitting, a man approached us wearing two white garments and greeted us, asking, "Where are the people coming from?" We said, "From Rabdah." He asked, "Do you sell this camel?" We said, "Yes." He asked, "For how much?" We replied, "For such and such amount of dates." He said, "I will take it." He took the camel and did not haggle with us. Then, he disappeared within the walls of Madinah, and we whispered to each other, wondering if he knew the value of our camel. The man with the container said, "Do not whisper among yourselves, for I saw the face of a man whom none of you could belittle. I have never seen anything resembling the moon on the night of a full moon as his face." Later that evening, a man approached us and greeted us, saying, "I am the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah, and he says, 'You may eat until you are satiated, and trade until you are content.'" We ate until we were full and traded until we were content. The next morning, we arrived at Madinah, and there stood the Messenger of Allah, delivering a sermon from the pulpit, saying, "The hand that gives is higher than the one that receives, and start with those you are responsible for, your mother and father, then your sister and brother, and then the closest ones." A man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, these are the sons of Tha'laba ibn Yarbua who killed so and so in the age of ignorance. Take our revenge from him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands up, and I saw the whiteness of his armpits as he said, "No, a mother cannot seek revenge for her child, no, a mother cannot seek revenge for her child."

While I was in the city of the Prophet, a man came and complained to him (the Prophet, ) of destitution and poverty. Then another man came and complained of robbery (by highwaymen). The Prophet said, "Adi! Have you been to Al-Hira?" I said, "I haven't been to it, but I was informed about it." He said, "If you should live for a long time, you will certainly see that a lady in a Howdah traveling from Al-Hira will (safely reach Mecca and) perform the Tawaf of the Kaʿba, fearing none but Allah." I said to myself, "What will happen to the robbers of the tribe of Tai who have spread evil through out the country?" The Prophet ﷺ further said. "If you should live long, the treasures of Khosrau will be opened (and taken as spoils)." I asked, "You mean Khosrau, son of Hurmuz?" He said, "Khosrau, son of Hurmuz; and if you should live long, you will see that one will carry a handful of gold or silver and go out looking for a person to accept it from him, but will find none to accept it from him. And any of you, when meeting Allah, will meet Him without needing an interpreter between him and Allah to interpret for him, and Allah will say to him: 'Didn't I send a messenger to teach you?' He will say: 'Yes.' Allah will say: 'Didn't I give you wealth and do you favors?' He will say: 'Yes.' Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and look to his left and see nothing but Hell." ʿAdi further said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Save yourself from the (Hell) Fire even with half a date (to be given in charity) and if you do not find a half date, then with a good pleasant word." ʿAdi added: (later on) I saw a lady in a Howdah traveling from Al-Hira till she performed the Tawaf of the Kaʿba, fearing none but Allah. And I was one of those who opened (conquered) the treasures of Khosrau, son of Hurmuz. If you should live long, you will see what the Prophet ﷺ Abu-l-Qasim had said: 'A person will come out with a handful. of gold...etc. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3595)
