[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ launched the expedition of Tabuk, he left Ali behind in Medina. People talked negatively about Ali and disliked his company, so Ali followed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he caught up with him on the way. Ali said, "O Messenger of Allah, you left me in Medina with the weak and the women until they said negative things about me." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "O Ali, I only left you behind to take care of my family. Are you not pleased to be to me like Haroon was to Musa, except that there will be no prophet after me?"

He (the Holy Prophet) sent me along with Abu 'Amir and Abu 'Amir received a wound in his knee from the arrow, (shot by) a person of Bani Jusham. It stuck in his knee. I went to him and said: Uncle, who shot an arrow upon you? Abu 'Amir pointed out to Abu Musa and said: Verily that one who shot an arrow upon me in fact killed me. Abu Musa said: I followed him with the determination to kill him and overtook him and when he saw me he turned upon his heels. I followed him and I said to him: Don't you feel ashamed (that you run), aren't you an Arab? Why don't you stop? He stopped and I had an encounter with him and we exchanged the strokes of (swords). I struck him with the sword and killed him. Then I came back to Abu Amir and said: Verily Allah has killed the one who killed you. And he said: Now draw out this arrow. I drew out the arrow and there came out from that (wound) water. Abu 'Amir said: My nephew, go to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and convey my greetings to him and tell him that Abu Amir begs you to ask forgiveness for him. And Abu Amir appointed me as the chief of the people and he died after a short time. When I came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ I visited him and he had been lying on the cot woven by strings and there was (no) bed over it and so there had been marks of the strings on the back of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and on his sides. I narrated to him what had happened to us and narrated to him about Abu Amir and said to him that he had made a request to the effect that forgiveness should be sought for him (from Allah). Thereupon Messenger of Allah (may peace be. upon him) called for water and performed ablution with it. He then lifted his hands and said. O Allah, grant pardon to Thy servant Abu Amir. (The Prophet had raised his hands so high for supplication) that I saw the whiteness of his armpits. He again said: O Allah, grant him distinction amongst the majority of Thine created beings or from amongst the people. I said: Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me too. Thereupon Allah's Apostle ﷺ said: Allah, forgive the sins of Abdullah b. Qais (Abu Musa Ash'ari) and admit him to an elevated place on the Day of Resurrection. Abu Burda said: One prayer is for abu 'Amir and the other is tor Abu Musa. (Using translation from Muslim 2498)

50.122 [Machine] The Imam's Advice to the People
“Whenever he appointed a man to lead a military detachment, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would advise him especially to fear Allah and treat the Muslims with him well. He ﷺ said: ‘Fight in the Name of Allah and in the cause of Allah. Fight those how disbelieve in Allah. Fight but do not be treacherous, do not steal from the spoils of war, do not mutilate and do not kill children. When you meet your enemy from among the polytheists, call them to one of three things. Whichever of them they respond to, accept it from them and refrain from fighting them. Invite them to accept Islam, and if they respond then accept it from them and refrain from fighting them. Then invite them to leave their land and move to the land of the polytheists. Tell them that if they do that, then they will have the same rights and duties as the polytheists. If they refuse, then tell them that they will be like the Muslim Bedouins (who live in the desert), subject to the same rulings of Allah as the believers. But they will have no share of Fay’* or war spoils, unless they fight alongside the Muslims. If they refuse to enter Islam, then ask them to pay the Poll-tax. If they do that, then accept it from them and refrain from fighting them. But if they refuse, then seek the help of Allah against them and fight them. If you lay siege to them and they want you to give them the protection of Allah and your Prophet, do not give them the protection of Allah and your Prophet, rather give them your protection and the protection of your father and your Companions, for if you violate your protection and the protection of your fathers, that is easier than violating the protection of Allah and the protection of His Messenger. If you lay siege to them and they want you to let them come out with a promise of the judgement of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, do not offer them a promise of the judgement of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, rather offer them your judgement, because you do not know if you will actually pass (the same as) Allah’s judgement regarding them or not.’” Another chain reports a similar hadith. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Journey is a piece of torture, for it disturbs one's sleep, eating and drinking. So, when you fulfill your job, you should hurry up to your family." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3001)

The Prophet ﷺ set out on Thursday for the Ghazwa of Tabuk and he used to prefer to set out (i.e. travel) on Thursdays. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2950)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rarely showed his face to others. Until the Battle of Tabuk, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and made his intentions known to the people. He wanted the people to prepare their weapons for battle. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became a warrior on Thursday.
It was rarely that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on a journey on any day but on a Thursday. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2605)
«قَلَّمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَخْرُجُ فِي سَفَرٍ جِهَادٍ وَغَيْرِهِ إِلَّا يَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ»

[Machine] In His saying, exalted is He, "And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is righteousness" [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:197], it is said that there were people who performed Hajj without provisions. So, the verse was revealed "And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is righteousness" [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:197].
"The Prophet sent us, a group of three hundred, and we carried our provision on our mounts. Our supplies ran our until each man of us had one date per day." It was said to him: "O Abu'Abdullah , what good is one date for a man?" he said: "When we ran out of dates it became very difficult for us. Then we found a whale that had been cast ashore by the sea. And we ate from it for eight days." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4351)

"Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army towards the east coast and appointed Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah as their chief, and the army consisted of three-hundred men including myself. We marched on till we reached a place where our food was about to finish. Abu- 'Ubaida ordered us to collect all the journey food and it was collected. My (our) journey food was dates. Abu 'Ubaida kept on giving us our daily ration in small amounts from it, till it was exhausted. The share of everyone of us used to be one date only." I said, "How could one date benefit you?" Jabir replied, "We came to know its value when even that too finished." Jabir added, "When we reached the sea-shore, we saw a huge fish which was like a small mountain. The army ate from it for eighteen days. Then Abu 'Ubaida ordered that two of its ribs be fixed and they were fixed in the ground. Then he ordered that a she-camel be ridden and it passed under the two ribs (forming an arch) without touching them." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2483)

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during a military expedition when the people suffered from hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter some of their camels and said, "May Allah reward us for it." When Umar ibn al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to grant them permission, he said, "O Messenger of Allah, what will happen to us when we meet the enemy tomorrow hungry and weak? But, O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit, you can call the people to gather whatever food they have left and then invoke blessings upon it. Indeed, Allah will respond to your invocation or bless us in your invocation." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called for whatever food the people had left and the people started bringing dates, and the highest amount brought by any person was a sa' (measurement) of dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ collected them and then stood up, invoked what Allah willed him to invoke, and called the army to bring their vessels and serve themselves. There was not a vessel left with the army that was not filled, and the same amount was left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars were seen, and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah. Allah will veil the fire from any servant who believes in them on the Day of Resurrection."

We were accompanying the Apostle ﷺ in a march (towards Tabuk). He (the narrator) said: The provisions with the people were almost depleted. He (the narrator) said: (And the situation became so critical) that they (the men of the army) decided to slaughter some of their camels. He (the narrator) said: Upon this Umar said: Messenger of Allah, I wish that you should pool together what has been left out of the provisions with the people and then invoke (the blessings of) Allah upon it. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) did it accordingly. He (the narrator) said: The one who had wheat in his possession came there with wheat. He who had dates with him came there with dates. And Mujahid said: He who possessed stones of dates came there with stones. I (the narrator) said: What did they do with the date-stones. They said: They (the people) sucked them and then drank water over them. He (the narrator said): He (the Holy Prophet) invoked the blessings (of Allah) upon them (provisions). He (the narrator) said: (And there was such a miraculous increase in the stocks) that the people replenished their provisions fully. He (the narrator) said: At that time he (the Holy Prophet) said: I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah, and I am His messenger. The bondsman who would meet Allah without entertaining any doubt about these (two fundamentals) would enter heaven. (Using translation from Muslim 27a)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended upon a battle that his companions fought. They suffered from hunger and their provisions were exhausted, so they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , complaining about what had befallen them, and seeking permission from him to sacrifice some of their transportation animals. He granted them permission, and they set out on their journey. They passed by Umar ibn Al-Khattab, who asked them where they were going. They informed him that they sought permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to sacrifice some of their camels. Umar asked if he had given them permission, to which they replied, "Yes." Umar said, "I ask you and swear upon you that you will not return without me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." And so they returned with Umar. Umar went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you grant them permission to sacrifice their transportation animals? What would they ride upon?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Umar, "What shall I do when I don't have what I can give them?" Umar said, "Rather, O Messenger of Allah, command whoever has more provisions to come to you, so that you may gather them and make a duaa (prayer) in it and then distribute it among them." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ followed Umar's suggestion, and he called for whoever had extra provisions to bring them forward. And among them were those who brought little and others who brought plenty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed it all in one container and made a prayer in it as Allah willed, and he distributed it among them. There was not a single person left from the group who did not fill whatever container they had and have leftovers. At that moment, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Whoever brings this testimony sincerely to Allah on the Day of Resurrection will enter Paradise without any doubt."

Ali ibn Rabi'ah said: I was present with Ali while a beast was brought to him to ride. When he put his foot in the stirrup, he said: "In the name of Allah." Then when he sat on its back, he said: "Praise be to Allah." He then said: "Glory be to Him Who has made this subservient to us, for we had not the strength, and to our Lord do we return." He then said: "Praise be to Allah (thrice); Allah is Most Great (thrice): glory be to Thee, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for only Thou forgivest sins." He then laughed. He was asked: At what did you laugh? He replied: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do as I have done, and laugh after that. I asked: Messenger of Allah , at what are you laughing? He replied: Your Lord, Most High, is pleased with His servant when he says: "Forgive me my sins." He know that no one forgives sins except Him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2602)

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he sent a group, and he sent Abu Ubaydah with them. When he was about to leave, he cried very hard in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man in his place named Abdullah ibn Jahsh, and he wrote a letter and ordered him to go in a different direction. He also ordered him not to read the letter until he had traveled a certain distance and not to force any of his companions to go with him. When he read the letter, he changed his mind and said, "For the sake of hearing and obeying Allah and His Messenger." He informed the group and read the letter to them. Two men returned and the rest continued. They met Ibn Hadrami and killed him without knowing if it was in the month of Rajab or Jumada al-Akhirah. The polytheists said to the Muslims, "You did such and such in the sacred month." So they went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what happened. Then Allah, may He be exalted, revealed the verse, "They ask you about the sacred month - about fighting therein. Say, 'Fighting therein is great sin'..." [Quran 2:217] until His saying, "And fitnah is worse than killing." [Quran 2:217]
