The Prophet ﷺ said, "If I were to take a Khalil, I would have taken Abu Bakr, but he is my brother and my companion (in Islam).

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ وَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَلَكِنْ أَخِي وَصَاحِبِي

The people of Kufa sent a letter to Ibn Az-Zubair, asking about (the inheritance of) (paternal) grandfather. He replied that the right of the inheritance of (paternal) grandfather is the same as that of father if the father is dead) and added, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ' If I were to take a Khalil from this nation, I would have taken him (i.e. Abu Bakr).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُهُ أَنْزَلَهُ أَبًا يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ

The person about whom Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to take a Khalil from this nation (my followers), then I would have taken him (i.e., Abu Bakr), but the Islamic Brotherhood is better (or said: good)," regarded a grandfather as the father himself (in inheritance).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُهُ وَلَكِنْ خُلَّةُ الإِسْلاَمِ أَفْضَلُ أَوْ قَالَ خَيْرٌ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْزَلَهُ أَبًا أَوْ قَالَ قَضَاهُ أَبًا

If I were to choose a bosom friend I would have definitely chosen Abu Bakr as my bosom friend, but he is my brother and my companion and Allah, the Exalted and Gliorious. has taken your brother and companion (meaning Prophet himself) as a friend.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلاً وَلَكِنَّهُ أَخِي وَصَاحِبِي وَقَدِ اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ ﷻ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلاً

If I were to choose as my bosom friend I would have chosen the son of Abu Quhafa (Abu Bakr) as my bosom friend.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ خَلِيلاً

If I were to choose amongst the people of earth someone as my bosom friend, I would have chosen the son of Abu Quhafa as my friends but God has taken your companion as a friend.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ خَلِيلاً وَلَكِنْ صَاحِبُكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللَّهِ

" Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have said: Behold I am free from the dependence of all bosom friends and if I were to choose anyone as bosom friend I would have taken Abu Bakr as my bosom friend. Allah has taken your companion as a friend.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَلاَ إِنِّي أَبْرَأُ إِلَى كُلِّ خِلٍّ مِنْ خِلِّهِ وَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلاً إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللَّهِ

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I free myself of the friendship of every Khalil, and if I were to take a Khalil then I would have taken Ibn Abi Quhafah as a Khalil. And indeed your companion is Allah's Khalil."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَبْرَأُ إِلَى كُلِّ خَلِيلٍ مِنْ خِلِّهِ وَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلاً لاَتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ خَلِيلاً وَإِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللَّهِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to take anyone as my intimate friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr as my intimate friend. However, the brotherhood of Islam is superior." This means that Abu Bakr was made a father, which means a grandfather.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا أَحَدًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنْ أُخُوَّةُ الْإِسْلَامِ أَفْضَلُ» يَعْنِي «أَبَا بَكْرٍ جَعَلَهُ أَبًا» يَعْنِي الْجَدَّ

[AI] The translation of the given Arabic phrase into English is: The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to take a close friend from this nation, I would have chosen Abu Bakr, as he is like a father to me."

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ فَإِنَّهُ قَضَاهُ أَبًا يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا أَحَدًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ خَلِيلًا

[AI] I heard Abu Al-Ahwas saying that Abdullah used to say about the Prophet ﷺ , "If I were to take a friend from my Ummah, I would have taken Abu Bakr."

سَمِعْتُأَبَا الْأَحْوَصِ يَقُولُ كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَقُولُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنْ أَخِي وَصَاحِبِي وَقَدِ اتَّخَذَ اللهُصَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلًا

[AI] About Al-Jadd? Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to have taken a close friend from this Ummah other than my Lord, I would have taken Ibn Abi Quhafa. However, he is my brother in religion and my companion in the cave. He made Al-Jadd a father, and the most deserving of what we have taken is the saying of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq".

عَنِ الْجَدِّ؟ وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَلِيلًا دُونَ رَبِّي ﷻ لَاتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ وَلَكِنَّهُ أَخِي فِي الدِّينِ وَصَاحِبِي فِي الْغَارِ جَعَلَ الْجَدَّ أَبًا وَأَحَقُّ مَا أَخَذْنَاهُ قَوْلُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ

[AI] I have the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, if I were to take a close friend besides Allah, I would have chosen Abu Bakr as my paternal grandfather until I meet him.

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا سِوَى اللهِ حَتَّى أَلْقَاهُ لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ جَعَلَ الْجَدَّأَبًا

[AI] He, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , said, "If I were to take a close friend other than Allah, I would have taken Abu Bakr as my close friend."

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا سِوَى اللهِ حَتَّى أَلْقَاهُ لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ جَعَلَ الْجَدَّ أَبًا

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ قَدْ رُوِيَ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ خَلِيلًا يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ قَضَى أَنَّ الْجَدَّ أَبٌ وَهَذَا الْكَلَامُ قَدْ رُوِيَ عَنِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ

If I were to choose as my bosom friend I would have chosen the son of Abu Quhafa (Abu Bakr) as my bosom friend. (Using translation from Muslim 2383c)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللهِ ﷻ»

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "If I were to take a close friend, I would have chosen Abu Bakr as my friend. However, he is my brother and companion, but Allah has taken your companions as friends."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنْ أَخِي وَصَاحِبِي وَقَدِ اتَّخَذَ اللهُ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلًا»

[AI] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "If I were to take a close friend, I would have chosen Abu Bakr as my close friend. However, your close friend is Allah."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللهِ»

[AI] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: "If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr but your companion (referring to Allah) is the close friend."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to take a close friend, I would have chosen Abu Bakr as my close friend."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one is better than Ali in terms of favors from Ahlul Bayt nor in terms of wealth than Abu Bakr. If I were to take a close friend, I would have chosen him, but brotherhood in Islam or Iman is sufficient."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ أَفْضَلُ عَلِيَّ فِي نِعْمَةِ أَهْلٍ وَلَا مَالٍ مِنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ وَلَكِنْ أُخُوَّةُ الْإِسْلَامِ أَوِ الْإِيمَانِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to take a close friend (khalil) other than Allah, I would have taken Abu Bakr as my close friend (khalil)." So he made Abu Bakr his close advisor.

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا حَتَّى أَلْقَى اللهَ سِوَى اللهِ لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا» فَكَانَ يَجْعَلُ الْجَدَّ أَبًا

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "If I were to have taken a close companion other than my Lord, I would have chosen Abu Bakr as my companion and brother in the cave."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا غَيْرَ رَبِّي لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا وَلَكِنْ أَخِي وَصَاحِبِي فِي الْغَارِ»

[AI] He, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: "If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken him as a close friend." He made seriousness a father to whom wealth can be inherited.

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ خَلِيلًا» جَعَلَ الْجَدَّ أَبًا يَجُوزُ إِلَيْهِ الْمَالَ

[AI] "He was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , if I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr, as he made him his father through lineage."

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ خَلِيلًا يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ جَعَلَ الْجَدَّ أَبًا

لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا جَعَلَ الْجَدَّ أَبًا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to take anyone as a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr as my close friend."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوِ أَتَّخِذُ أَحَدًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْزَلَهُ أَبًا يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ

"إِنِّى أَبْرَأُ إِلَى كُلِّ ذى خُلَّة مِنْ خُلَّتهِ. وَلَوْ كنْتُ مُتَخِذًا مِنْ أَهْل الأَرْضِ خَلِيلًا لأَتخذْتُ أبَا بَكْر خَلِيلًا، ولَكِنَّه أَخِى وَصَاحِبِى فِى الغَارِ".

"أَلَا إِنِّى أَبْرَأ إِلى كُلِّ خِلٍّ مِنْ خُلَّتِهِ، وَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَخِذًا خَلِيلًا لاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْر خَلِيلًا، وَإِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ خَلِيلُ اللَّهِ".

"لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا حَتَّى أَلْقَى الله، سِوَى الله، لَاتَّحذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلا".

"لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لَاتَّخَذتُ أبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلا".

"لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا، لاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْر خَلِيلًا، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: كَمَا قَال الله: صَاحِبِى".

"لَوْ كنتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي خَلِيلًا دُونَ رَبِّى لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا، وَلَكِن أَخِى في الدِّينِ، وَصَاحِبى في الْغَارِ".

"لَوْ كنتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا لاتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبى قُحَافَةَ خَليلًا، وَلكنَّ صاحِبَكُم خَلِيلُ الله - ﷻ".

"لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخذًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ خَلِيلًا لاتَّخَذْتُ أبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلا وَلَكِنَّهُ أخِي وَصَاحِبى وَقَدْ اتَّخَذَ الله - ﷻ - صاحبَكُم خَلِيلا".
