24. Book of History of the Prophets and Messengers ؑ (3/6)
[Machine] Narrated to us Al-Hakim Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al-Hafiz, dictating on the month of Rabial-Akhir in the year 401: The Book of the Histories of the ancient prophets and messengers, and mentioning their virtues and stories along with the nations, as narrated by our master, the chosen one, peace be upon him, and upon them all. Verily, the Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail compiled it in this place from the authentic collection before the beginning of the legislation and mentioned the Companions, so I followed him. It mentions what has been narrated through authentic chains of narration regarding the mention of Adam, the father of mankind, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and his wife Hawwa when they descended to the earth, which has not been mentioned by the two Sheikhs.
[Machine] Then was born to Ya'qub (Jacob) Yusuf (Joseph), the truthful one whom Allah chose, honored, and divided for him two-thirds of beauty, and divided between his servants one-third. He resembled Adam on the day Allah created him, formed him, and blew into him from His spirit before disobedience befell him. When Adam disobeyed, the light, radiance, and beauty were removed from him. Allah had given Adam beauty, radiance, and light on the day He created him, but when he committed what he did, that was removed from him. Then Allah bestowed upon Adam one-third of beauty along with repentance, which he repented for. Then Allah gave Yusuf beauty, radiance, and light, which He removed from Adam when he sinned. That is because Allah loved to show His servants that He is capable of whatever He wills. And Allah gave Yusuf beauty and radiance that He did not give to anyone else from the people. Then Allah granted him knowledge of interpreting dreams, and he would inform of the matter he saw in his dream before it happens. Allah taught him as He taught Adam all the names. And when he smiled, you could see the light in his molars, and when he spoke, you could see the radiance of light in his speech, and it would blaze with heat between his two lips. This is a summarized version of the stories of Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, based on authentic narrations. If I were to include the marvels of Wahb bin Munabbih and Abu Abdullah Al-Waqidi, the translation would be prolonged, according to the narration of Samrah from Ka'ab and the chain of narration.

24.14 [Machine] The mention of the Prophet Moses, son of Imran, and his brother Aaron, son of Imran.
[Machine] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Moses ibn Imran stood as a preacher amongst the Children of Israel." The hadith is long.
[Machine] And We wrote for him on the tablets concerning everything as a reminder and detailed explanation of everything. [Al-A'raf 145]
He (Moses) said, so Moses agreed that everything was confirmed to him, just as you see that your scholars have confirmed everything for you. So when Moses reached the shores of the sea, he met the scholar and asked him to let him learn from his knowledge. The scholar admitted to Moses that he had knowledge, and Moses desired to follow him in order to gain guidance from his teachings. However, the scholar realized that Moses could not tolerate his company nor bear the knowledge he possessed. The scholar said to Moses, "You cannot tolerate being patient with me, so how can you be patient with that which you are not aware of?" Moses said to him, while excusing himself, "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient and obedient to your command." The scholar then realized that Moses could not tolerate his company nor bear his knowledge. He said to him, "If you are to follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I inform you of it." They both embarked on a ship, and the scholar made a hole in it, which pleased Allah but angered Moses. Then they encountered a young boy, and the scholar killed him, which pleased Allah. [The rest of the story is mentioned by Ibn Abbas.]
: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, he began with himself and said: May the mercy of Allah be upon us and upon Moses. If he had patience, he would have seen marvels from his Companion. But he said: "(Moses) said: If ever I ask thee about anything after this, keep me not in they company: then wouldst thou have received (full) excuse from my side". Hamzah lengthened it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3984)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah chose Musa with His speech and Ibrahim with His close friendship."
[Machine] Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, granted the vision and speech between Muhammad ﷺ and Moses, so Muhammad saw him twice, and Moses spoke to him twice, according to the condition of a Muslim.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Moses, son of Imran, is the chosen one of Allah."
[Machine] "If Allah speaks to someone, he will die without anyone else witnessing it." - Its chain of narration is sound.
[Machine] "You will not see me, but look at the mountain. If it remains firm in its place, then you will see me." So when his Lord manifested His glory to the mountain, He made it crumble to dust and Moses fell unconscious. When he recovered, he said, "Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance and I am the first to believe." Meaning, the first among the Children of Israel to believe.

Abu Ali Al-Hafiz narrated to us, informing that Al-Hasan ibn Sufyan, Imran ibn Musa Al-Jurjani, and Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Al-Muthanna reported and said that Hudbah ibn Khalid narrated from Hammad ibn Salama, resembling the narration of Al-Khuzai, and Hudbah did not have any doubts in it.

Thus, they requested to witness the same, and Musa chose some of his elite companions to be witnesses for him before the Children of Israel, that his Lord had spoken to him. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the Angel of Death used to approach people visibly. So, he came to Musa (Moses) son of Imran and Musa slapped him, thus causing his eye to pop out. As a result, the Angel of Death complained to Allah saying, 'O Lord, your slave Musa has done such and such to me. Had it not been for his honor in Your sight, I would have avenged myself on him.' Allah commanded, 'Go to My slave Musa and give him the choice between placing his hand on the back of a bull and for every hair that his hand covers, he will live for a year, or to die at that moment.' So, the Angel of Death came to Musa and presented him with the choice. Musa asked, 'What will happen after that?' The Angel of Death replied, 'Then, death will come.' Musa said, 'Then, now is better.' He took a deep breath and the Angel of Death seized his soul. Allah restored his sight to him. After this incident, the Angel of Death approached people in secret."

[Machine] And Allah mourned for Harun when Allah wanted to take him. So when Allah mourned for him, he was saddened. And when he passed away, he felt extreme grief and wept for a long time. When he returned from that, Allah came to console him and advise him. He said to him, "O Musa, it is not appropriate for you to grieve over something lost to me or seek companionship with anyone other than me. And you should not rely on anyone other than me. And your grief for Harun now should only be for my sake. How can you feel lonely for something from this world when you hear my words? Or how can you grieve for something lost in this world after I have chosen you with my messages and my words, and mentioned long conversations with you?" Musa said, "Harun passed away when he was 117 years old, three years before his time was due to end. And Harun passed away when he was 120 years old, while Musa remained for three more years until he reached the age of 120. And the children of Israel were scattered, coming together and then separating."

[Machine] And from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, it is reported that Allah revealed to Musa ibn Imran, "Indeed, I shall cause Harun to die. So bring him to a specific mountain." So Musa and Harun set off towards that mountain, and suddenly they came across a tree resembling a well-built house. And within it, they found a bed with a comfortable mattress. And there was a pleasant scent in the air. When Harun saw the mountain, the house, and everything inside it, he was amazed and said, "O Musa! I would love to sleep on this bed." Musa replied, "Then go ahead and sleep on it." Harun expressed his fear, saying, "I fear that the Lord of this house may be angry with me." Musa assured him, saying, "Do not fear, I shall protect you from the Lord of this house. So go ahead and sleep." Harun then said, "O Musa, but rather you sleep with me, for if the Lord of this house comes, He will be angry with me and you as well." So when they both slept, Harun died. Upon waking up and finding his brother dead, Musa said, "O Harun, you deceived me!" Then, when Harun was taken, that house was lifted and that tree disappeared, and the bed was raised up to the heavens. When Musa returned to the Children of Israel without Harun, they accused him, saying, "Musa killed Harun out of envy, for the Children of Israel loved Harun more than Musa." Harun was known for his kindness and gentleness among them, while Musa had some harshness towards them. When Musa heard these accusations, he said to them, "Woe to you! Has my brother’s killing become an accusation against me?!" And when they persisted in their claim, he stood up and performed two units of prayer, then he supplicated to Allah. As a result, the bed was brought down from the heavens until it was visible to them between the sky and the earth, thus confirming Musa's truthfulness.

[Machine] From Ali, in his saying, exalted and noble: "O you who have believed, do not be like those who harmed Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said." (Al-Ahzab 69) He said: Moses ascended the mountain and Aaron died. The children of Israel said to Moses, "You have killed him; he was more beloved to us than you and was gentler to us than you, so they harmed him in that." Then Allah commanded the angels and they carried him, passing him by the gatherings of the children of Israel until they learned of his death, then they buried him. No one except the angels knew his grave. And indeed, Allah made him deaf and dumb.

[Machine] Musa, the chosen one of Allah, used to dislike death and considered it great. Then, when he developed hatred for it, Allah desired for him to love death and detest life. Thus, prophethood was transferred to Yusha bin Nun. Musa would visit him in the morning and evening, and Musa would ask him, "O Prophet of Allah, what revelations has Allah sent to you?" Yusha bin Nun would reply, "O Prophet of Allah, did I not accompany you for a certain number of years? Did I not ask you about anything that Allah revealed to you, so that I could be the one to initiate and remember it?" When Musa saw that, he started to dislike life and love death.

[Machine] It was part of the destiny of the death of the Prophet Moses ﷺ that he used to seek shelter in an arish (kind of tree) and eat and drink from a stream of water from a rock, just as an animal would graze near that stream. This was his humility towards Allah, until Allah honored him with what He honored him through His words. It was part of his destiny that one day he left his arish for some of his needs, and no one from the creation of Allah knew about it. He passed by a group of angels who were digging a grave, and he recognized them, so he approached them until he stood near them. He found them digging a grave, and he had never seen anything better than what was in it, in terms of greenery, freshness, and beauty. He said to them, "O angels of Allah, for whom are you digging this grave?" They said, "We are digging it for a noble servant of his Lord." He said, "Indeed, this servant is of a station from Allah such that I have never seen anything like it, not as a sleeping place nor as an entrance. This is when he received what Allah had ordained for him in his passing away." The angels said to him, "O beloved of Allah, do you desire to be like this?" He said, "I wish." They said, "Then come down and lie in it, and turn towards your Lord, then take a breath that is the easiest breath you have ever taken." So he came down and lay in it, and turned towards his Lord, and then took a breath. Then Allah took his soul, and the angels prayed on him. The Prophet Moses ﷺ was ascetic in the world and longing for the hereafter.

[Machine] Ayoub ibn Amoos was the messenger of Allah who was tested by Iblis, the enemy of Allah, with his troops, horses, and men to tempt him and distract him from the remembrance of Allah. But Allah protected him and Iblis found no way to reach him. So Allah bestowed tranquility and patience upon Ayoub to endure the affliction that he was tested with. And Allah called him "a servant who always turns to Allah" (Quran 38:44). Ayoub was a tall man with curly hair and wide eyes, and he had a handsome appearance. On his forehead was written "the patient one who endures affliction." He had a short neck, broad chest, sturdy legs, and strong arms. He would give to widows and support them earnestly, advising them for the sake of Allah, the Almighty.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the Prophet Ayyub (Job), peace be upon him, endured his affliction for fifteen years, during which his close relatives and distant relatives abandoned him, except for two of his brothers who were among his closest brothers. They used to visit him in the morning and evening. One day, one of them said to the other, 'By Allah, Ayyub has committed a sin that no one among the world's inhabitants has committed.' His companion asked, 'What is that?' He replied, 'For eighteen years, Allah has not shown him any mercy, so He has removed whatever he had.' When they went to Ayyub, the man could not bear it until he mentioned it to him. Ayyub said to him, 'I do not know what you are saying, other than that Allah knows that I used to command the two men who disputed with each other to mention Allah, so return to my home and I will purify them out of dislike for mentioning Allah except in the truth.' He used to go out for his needs, and when he fulfilled his need, his wife would hold his hand until he came back. One day, he took longer than usual, so Allah revealed to Ayyub in the place where he was, 'Strike the ground with your foot: This is to wash yourself with cold water and for a drink.' His wife scooped it up, and he went to her, and Allah removed his affliction completely. He was better than ever before. When she saw him, she said, 'May Allah bless you! Did you see the Prophet of Allah, this afflicted man? By Allah, I have never seen anyone resemble him more than you, when he was healthy.' He replied, 'Indeed, I am that person.' He had two plots of land: one for wheat and the other for barley. Allah sent two clouds, one over each field. The cloud over the wheat field rained gold until it was full. The cloud over the barley field rained silver until it was full."

[Machine] The translation into English is as follows: "The age of Job was ninety-three years when he made a will before his death, leaving it to his son Hawmal. Allah then sent his son Bashr bin Ayyub as a prophet and named him Dhul Kifl. He was commanded to call people to the worship of Allah. Job lived in Sham (Syria) until he passed away at the age of seventy-five. Bashr then left his will to his son Abdan. After them, Allah sent Shuayb as a prophet. This narration is narrated by Abdul Mannan bin Idris, who has been proven to be a liar."

[Machine] Then Elijah, the Prophet of Allah, was a companion of mountains and deserts in which he secluded himself to worship his Lord. He had a large head, wide chest, thin calves, and there was a red mole on his head. Allah raised him to the land of Sham (Syria), but he did not ascend to the heavens. He left behind him the prophethood to be inherited by Al-Yasa' (Elisha) after him.

[Machine] And it is He whom Allah named Dhu an-Nun.
[Machine] "And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers. And [mention] Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, 'My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors.' So We responded to him and honored him with John and caused his wife to bear for him, and they in haste to good deeds and supplicated Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive. And [mention] the one who guarded her chastity, so We blew into her [garment] through Our angel [Gabriel], and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds. Indeed, this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me. And [yet] they divided their affair among themselves, [but] all to Us will return." [Surah Al-Anbiya, 87-93] So Allah responded to him and saved him from the people of darkness, the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea and the darkness of the belly of the whale, and he stayed with his people and Allah sent him to a hundred thousand or more, and they believed, so Allah granted them enjoyment until their appointed time.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Jonah) which he made while in the belly of the fish was this: 'There is no deity worthy of worship but You, glorified are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.'" No Muslim person sincerely asks Allah for something in distress, except that Allah grants their request.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever says that I am better than Jonah bin Matta, is a liar." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4604)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a group of people and asked, 'What is this?' They said, 'This is Thaniyyah.' He said, 'It is as if I am seeing Yunus ibn Matta riding on a camel with a bridle, wearing a cloak made of wool, and saying, 'Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik'."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever supplicates with the supplication of Yunus (Jonah) that he supplicated with in the belly of the whale, his supplication will be answered." This is a witness to what has been mentioned before.
Yunus bin Matta was a righteous servant, but he was of narrow character. When the burdens of prophethood were placed upon him and they were burdens that only a few could bear, he cracked under their weight, just as a single straw breaks under the burden. He expelled them from his body and fled from them, saying to his Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , "Therefore be patient, as the messengers endowed with determination were patient." "So be patient with the decree of your Lord and do not be like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed." [Quran 68:48] It means, do not throw in another burden as you have thrown it away. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.

[Machine] When Yunus (Jonah) was swallowed by the whale, he thought it was his death, so he moved his legs and found movement within it. Then he prostrated and said, "O Lord, I have made for You a mosque in a place where no one has prostrated before." Al-Dhahabi did not mention it in the summary.

[Machine] From his father, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "{Have you not seen those who left their homes in great numbers, fearing death?}" [Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 243] to His saying: "{And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers}" [Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 95]. He (the narrator) said: Allah the Exalted revealed to their prophet that in the son of So-and-So there is a man who Allah will be killed by with Goliath (Jalut). Among his signs is this horn that he places on his head, and whatever he missed in the past will be returned to him. So he came to him and said, "Indeed, Allah has revealed to me that a man in your lineage will kill Goliath." He said, "Yes, O Prophet of Allah." He said, "So he brought out for him twelve men in rows, resembling the saviors, and among them is a skilled man. He made them pass by the horn, but he could not see anything." He said, "Then he said, 'You have other children besides those.' He said, 'Yes, O Prophet of Allah. I have a short son whom I am shy for people to see.' So I placed him among the sheep." He said, "And where is he?" He said, "He is in the group of such and such." He said, "So he went to him and said, 'This is him, no doubt about it.' And he placed the horn on his head, and he stood up."

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When Allah created Adam He wiped his back and every person that He created among his offspring until the Day of Resurrection fell out of his back. He placed a ray of light between the eyes of every person. Then He showed them to Adam and he said: 'O Lord! Who are these people?' He said: 'These are your offspring.' He saw one of them whose ray between his eyes amazed him, so he said: 'O Lord! Who is this?' He said: 'This is a man from the latter nations of your offspring called Dawud.' He said: 'Lord! How long did You make his lifespan?' He said: 'Sixty years.' He said: 'O Lord! Add forty years from my life to his.' So at the end of Adam's life, the Angel of death of came to him, and he said: 'Do I not have forty years remaining?' He said: 'Did you not give them to your son Dawud?'" He said: "Adam denied, so his offspring denied, and Adam forgot and his offspring forgot, and Adam sinned, so his offspring sinned." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3076)

[Machine] About As-Suddi in his saying, Almighty Allah says, "And We strengthened his kingdom." [Surah Saba, Verse 20]
As-Suddi said, "He used to protect it every day and night with four thousand four thousand." As-Suddi also said, "David had divided his time into three days; a day for spending time with people, a day for solitude in worship, and a day for solitude with his wives. He had ninety-nine wives. He read in the scriptures about the virtue of Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya'qub, and when he found this, he said, 'O Lord, I see that all the good has been taken away from my forefathers who preceded me, so give me the same as You gave them, and treat me as You treated them.' Allah inspired him, saying, 'Your forefathers were tested with tribulations that you have not been tested with. Ibrahim was tested with the sacrifice of his son, Ishaq was tested with his sight, and Ya'qub was tested with the sorrow of losing Yusuf. But you have not been tested with any of that.' David said, 'O Lord, test me with similar tests to what You tested them with, and give me what You gave them.' Allah revealed to him, 'Verily, you will be tested, so be cautious.' After that, he remained as long as Allah willed for him to remain. Then, Shaytan came to him in the form of a golden pigeon and landed between his feet while he was standing in prayer. David reached out his hand to take it, but it flew away. He looked to see where it had gone, and he sent someone in its tracks. He said, 'The person saw a woman bathing on a rooftop, and he saw that she was one of the most beautiful women, and he desired her. So, she saw him looking at her, and she revealed her hair, and he became even more attracted to her.' He asked about her and was informed that she was married, and her husband was absent on military duty. He sent a message to her husband instructing him to be sent to his enemy in a certain position. He sent him, and he was killed in the third battle. Then, David married his wife. When he went to her, he did not stay with her for long before Allah sent two angels in human form to visit him. They asked to see him, but the guards prevented them from entering. They encircled him as he was praying. He did not notice them until they said, 'Do not fear. We are only two opponents who disputed with each other. So judge between us with justice and do not be biased.' He mentioned the entire Hadith in its entirety, acknowledging his mistake. Al-Dhahabi did not include its summarization.

[Machine] A vineyard had produced its grapes, but the sheep ruined it. Dawood (David) decided to grant the vineyard to the owner of the sheep. Sulaiman (Solomon) said, "This is not fair, O Prophet of Allah." Dawood asked, "Why?" Sulaiman replied, "You should transfer the vineyard to its owner, and the sheep to its owner, until the vineyard returns to its previous state." Allah, the Almighty, says, "So We made Sulaiman understand it, and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge." (Quran 21:79). Adh-Dhahabi remained silent regarding the summary.
