2. Menstruation (1/4)
2.1 [Machine] The menstruating woman does not pray or fast.
Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) of ʿId-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion." (Using translation from Bukhārī 304)
2.2 [Machine] Menstruating women break the fast but do not make up for missed prayers.
[Machine] I asked Aisha about a woman who menstruates and observes fasting but does not observe prayer. Aisha replied to her, "What are you, a Hururiyyah?" She said, "I am not a Hururiyyah, but I am asking you." Aisha said, "That used to happen to us during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . We were commanded to make up for the missed fasting days, but we were not commanded to make up for the missed prayers." Ma'mar reported to us from Ayyub from Abu Qilabah from Muadhah from Aisha with a similar narration.
2.3 [Machine] Menstruating women do not circumambulate the House (Kaaba).
[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we reached Sarif or Qarib, where I had my period. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me while I was crying, and he asked, "What is the matter with you?" I replied, "I am menstruating." He said, "Surely, this is a matter that Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam, so do everything that the pilgrim does except for circumambulation around the Kaaba." She (the narrator) added, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sacrificed an animal."
2.4 [Machine] The menstruating woman should not enter the mosque nor stay in it
[Machine] She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come to me when he was in a state of boundary due to proximity, and I would wash his head while I was menstruating."
2.5 [Machine] Women on their period should not touch the Quran or recite it.
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote a letter to the people of Yemen containing matters related to obligations, religious practices, and fines, and he sent it with 'Amr ibn Hazm. He mentioned in it a hadith in which he said, 'The Quran should not be touched except by someone who is pure.' He sent it to others as well, and Allah knows best. It is also mentioned regarding Ibn 'Umar that he disliked for a menstruating woman to touch the mushaf (Quran)."
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "Neither the menstruating woman nor the person in a state of sexual impurity should recite anything from the Quran. This is not acceptable."
[Machine] About Ata', Abu Al-‘Aliyah, Al-Nakha‘i, and Sa‘eed ibn Jubair in regards to menstruating women, the Quran should not be recited.
2.6 [Machine] Do not approach women in menstruation until they have purified themselves and washed.
[Machine] About Ibn Abbas's statement regarding the verse "Stay away from women during their menstrual periods," he says that it means to abstain from sexual intercourse with them. And do not approach them until they have purified themselves. When they have purified themselves from blood and purified themselves with water, then approach them as Allah has commanded you. He says regarding the private parts, do not go beyond that. Whoever does anything beyond that has transgressed.
[Machine] About Mujahid's saying ﷻ, "And do not approach them until they are pure" [Al-Baqarah 222], "until the bleeding stops" [Al-Baqarah 222], he said, "He (the Messenger of Allah) ﷺ said, 'When they perform ritual ablution.'"
[Machine] Her husband does not approach her until she has taken a bath.
[Machine] For a man to have intercourse with his wife and there is no water present when she becomes ritually clean after her menstrual period during a journey when she has performed dry ablution (tayammum).
[Machine] "That you should wash?" They said, "No, not until you wash."
[Machine] An Arab man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we stay in the desert for four or five months, and women, menstruating women, and those in a state of sexual impurity are with us. What do you advise?" He replied, "Stay on the highlands."
2.7 [Machine] Starting menstruation: What is permissible above the waist garment and what is allowed and prohibited.
[Machine] One of us used to be instructed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to wear an izar (a type of garment) and then he would have relations with her.
[Machine] One of us, when she was menstruating, the Prophet ﷺ commanded her to put on an izar (lower garment) during her menstruation, then he would have intimate relations with her. And which of you has control over his desire as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had control over his desire.
[Machine] About Maymuna bint al-Harith, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have sexual intercourse with his wives while they were on their period.
[Machine] "Narrated by Maymuna, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , she said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to have sexual relations with one of his wives while she was menstruating, he would command her to wrap herself in a waist wrapper."
[Machine] I heard Maymunah say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lie down with me while I was menstruating, with a garment between me and him."
While I was laying with the Prophet ﷺ under a single woolen sheet, I got the menses. I slipped away and put on the clothes for menses. He said, "Have you got "Nifas" (menses)?" I replied, "Yes." He then called me and made me lie with him under the same sheet. (Using translation from Bukhārī 298)
[Machine] "She was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a secluded place when she got her menstruation. Her people told her to wrap herself and then come back."
[Machine] Abu Tahir Al-Faqih informed us from his source that Abu Uthman Al-Basri narrated to us from Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab, who narrated from Khalid ibn Makhlad, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Jafar, who informed me that Shareek ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Namir narrated from Ataa ibn Yasar, who narrated from Aisha. She said, "I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ under one blanket. I moved away, and he asked, 'What is the matter?' I replied, 'I have menstruation.' He said, 'Tighten your waist cloth and enter (under the blanket again).'" This narration is also reported by Malik ibn Rabia from Aisha, through a different chain of narrators. It is possible that this incident occurred with both Aisha and Umm Salamah.
[Machine] I asked Aisha, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ engage in sexual intercourse with you while you were menstruating?" She replied, "Yes, and I was experiencing severe cramps. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would tell me to wear a waist-wrapper owned by Abu Bakr, and then he would engage in intercourse with me throughout the long night." I asked, "Did he eat with you while you were menstruating?" She said, "If I had food, he would take a bite from it and then pass it to me, and I would eat from the place he had bitten." I asked, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drink from your drinking vessel?" She said, "He would give me the cup to drink from, then take it and place his mouth where I had drunk from, and he would then drink."
[Machine] If I drink from the cup while I am on my period, the Prophet ﷺ will place his mouth on the same place I drank from and I will take the remnant and he will place his mouth on the same place I took from.
[Machine] She said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge in my chamber while I was on my period, and he would recite the Quran."
[Machine] "On Aisha's authority, it is mentioned in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to cover me while I was menstruating, and the garment would reach my head."
[Machine] He asked the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , what is permissible for me with my wife while she is in her menstrual period? He said to him, anything above the waist garment. He also mentioned the permission of embracing his wife while she is in her menstrual period. The hadith was narrated by his uncle Abdullah ibn Sa'd al-Ansari, and it is narrated that Har'am ibn Mu'awiya also reported from his uncle Abdullah ibn Sa'd al-Ansari.
[Machine] "And what are they?" They said, "The optional prayers a man performs in his house. What is permissible for a man regarding his wife while she is menstruating, and regarding the purification from sexual impurity." Umar said, "Are you sorcerers?" They said, "No, O Commander of the Believers, we are not sorcerers." Umar said, "You have asked me about three things, none of which have been asked of me since I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about them. As for the optional prayers performed by a man in his house, it is a light, so illuminate your house to the extent you are able. As for menstruation, it is above the waist wrappings (izars), so there is nothing wrong with that. And as for purification from sexual impurity, you should first pour water over your right hand onto your left hand, then you should wash your private parts and anything that becomes affected, then you should perform ablution for prayer, then you should pour water three times on your head, rubbing your head each time, then you should wash the rest of your body."
2.8 [Machine] The man is affected by the discharging of the woman during sexual intercourse
Among the jews, when a women menstruated, they ejected her from the house, and they did not eat with her, nor did they drink with her, nor did they associate with her in (their houses) so the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) was questioned about that. Thereupon Allah revealed : “They question thee concerning menstruation. Say : I: is an illness, so let woman alone at such times” (ii 222). The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) then said: Associate with them in the houses and do everything except sexual intercourse. Thereupon the Jews said: This man does not want to leave anything we do without opposing us in it. Usaid b. Hudair and Abbad b. Bishr came and said: Messenger of Allah, the jews are saying such and such a thing. Shall we not then have intercourse with women during mensuration? The face of the Apostle Allah ﷺ underwent such a change that we thought he was angry with them; but when they went out they received a gift of milk which was being brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent after them and gave them a drink, whereupon we thought that he was not angry with them. [Machine] "Nudba, the companion of Maymuna, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , informed him that Maymuna had sent her to Abdullah ibn Abbas with a letter. She entered and found his bed separated from his wife's bed. She then returned to Maymuna and delivered her message. Maymuna told her, 'Go back to his wife and ask her about it.' She returned to her and asked her about it. She informed her that whenever she had her period, Abdullah would separate his bed from her. Maymuna became angry and said, 'Are you deviating from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ? By Allah, if a woman were to have her period, her husband would cover her with a cloth until her thighs were covered, then he would engage in intimacy with her.'"

Khallas al-Hujari reported: Aisha said: I and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pass night in one (piece of) cloth (on me) while I menstruated profusely. If anything from me (i.e. blood) smeared him (i.e. his body), he would wash that spot and would not exceed it (in washing), then he would offer prayer with it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 269)

[Machine] I inform you about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. He entered and went to his mosque. Abu Dawud said, "meaning, the mosque of his house." He did not leave until my eyes drooped and the cold made his head ache. He said, "come closer to me." She said, "so I said, 'Indeed, I am menstruating.'" He said, "even if you uncover your thighs." So I uncovered my thighs and he placed his cheek and chest on my thighs. I leaned over him until he became warm and fell asleep.

[Machine] Some of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ said that when the Prophet ﷺ wanted something from his wife who was menstruating, he would command her to place a cloth on her private part, then he would proceed with what he desired. Abu Bakr said, "All of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ are trustworthy."

[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ regarding a man who approaches his wife while she is menstruating, he said, "He should give charity with a full dinar or half a dinar, and likewise…"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding someone who has sexual intercourse with his wife while she is menstruating, that he should give in charity one dinar or half a dinar.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ commanded him to give in charity a dinar or half a dinar, and Qatadah explained it, saying, "If he has one, then a dinar, and if he does not find it, then half a dinar." Qatadah did not hear it from Miq
[Machine] A man deceived his wife while she was menstruating, so he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. So he commanded him to give charity with a dinar or half a dinar, and he did not hear anything from Abdul-Hameed either.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ claiming that he had come with his wife while she was menstruating. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ commanded him to give a dinar in charity, and if he could not find one, then half a dinar.
[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ , he commanded him to give charity with two dinars, and this is the third difference in its chain of narrators and its content.
[Machine] "There is a narration from the Prophet ﷺ that whenever a man has intercourse with his wife while she is menstruating, he should give half a dinar in charity." The scholar said
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you has sexual intercourse with his wife while she is menstruating, let him give a dinar in charity. And if he has intercourse with her after she has become clean and she has not performed ghusl, then let him give half a dinar in charity." This is reported by Ibn Jurayj and narrated by Ibn Abi 'Aroobah from 'Abdul Kareem. And the interpretation is according to the statement of Miqsam.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ instructed him to give one dinar or half a dinar in charity and explained the distribution. He said, "If menstruation overcomes her before the blood flows, then it is one dinar. And if it overcomes her after the cessation of the blood and before she performs the ritual purification, then it is half a dinar." It is narrated by Sa'id, from 'Abdul-Karim, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas.
[Machine] Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us that Abu Tahir al-Muhammadaabiyy reported to us that Abu Qilabah narrated to us that Ru'uh ibn 'Ubada narrated to us that Sa'id ibn Abi 'Aroubah transmitted to us from 'Abdul Karim Abi Umamah from 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding a man who approaches his wife while she is menstruating, he should give a dinar in charity. If he cannot find that, he should give half of a dinar. This is according to the proportion. He said, "If it is during the flowing of the blood, then a dinar, and if it is during the cessation of the blood, then half of a dinar. And if she does not perform ghusl (ritual purification), then half of a dinar."

[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ regarding a man who approaches his wife while she is menstruating, he said: "If the blood is copious, then he should give in charity a dinar, and if it is less, then half a dinar." We were informed by Abu al-Hasan ibn Abdan, who was informed by Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, who narrated from al-Baghndi and al-Narsi, who said: Ubaidullah ibn Musa al-Abssi narrated from Abu Ja'far al-Razi, who mentioned it and Hisham al-Dastuwai narrated it from Abdul Karim, and he stopped there.
