The Prophet ﷺ said: ʿThe deceased is tormented in his grave because of the wailing for him.ʿ

أحمد:٢٤٧ – حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَعَنْ عُمَرَ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The deceased is tortured in his grave for the wailing done over him." Narrated Shu'ba: The deceased is tortured for the wailing of the living ones over him .

البخاري:١٢٩٢ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْمَيِّتُ يُعَذَّبُ فِي قَبْرِهِ بِمَا نِيحَ عَلَيْهِ

تَابَعَهُ عَبْدُ الأَعْلَى حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ وَقَالَ آدَمُ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ الْمَيِّتُ يُعَذَّبُ بِبُكَاءِ الْحَىِّ عَلَيْهِ

muslim:927b – Muḥammad b. Bashhār > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab > Ibn ʿUmar > ʿUmar

The dead is punished in the grave because of wailing on it.

مسلم:٩٢٧b – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عُمَرَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْمَيِّتُ يُعَذَّبُ فِي قَبْرِهِ بِمَا نِيحَ عَلَيْهِ

muslim:927c – Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > Ibn Abū ʿAdī > Saʿīd > Qatādah > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab > Ibn ʿUmar > ʿUmar

The same hadith is narrated on the authority of 'Umar through another chain of transmitters.

"I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'The deceased is punished in his grave due to the wailing over him."'

النسائي:١٨٥٣ – أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عُمَرَ قَالَ

ʿThe deceased is tormented in his grave because of being wailed over.ʿ Al-Hajjaj said: ʿ...because of the wailing over him.ʿ

أحمد:٣٥٤ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَعَنْ أَبِيهِ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْمَيِّتُ يُعَذَّبُ فِي قَبْرِهِ بِمَا نِيحَ عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ حَجَّاجٌ بِالنِّيَاحَةِ عَلَيْهِ
