[AI] We memorized the Night of Decree in a group from the Quraysh. So I stood and went to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and said, "O Abu Sa'id, won't you come out with us to the date-palm trees?" تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقُمْتُ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ أَلَا تَخْرُجُ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِخَمِيصَةٍ فَأَدْخَلَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَخَرَجْنَا فَقُلْتُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةُ عِشْرِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ قَامَ فِينَا فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي وِتْرٍ وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ وَثَارَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَسَقْفُهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الطِّينِ وَالْمَاءِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ عَلَى أَرْنَبَتِهِ وَجَبْهَتِهِ

that the Prophet ﷺ said or he said Abū al-Qasim said, "˹Start˺ fasting ˹the month˺ upon seeing it (the moon), and break ˹fasting the month˺ upon seeing it. If it is hidden for you (as a result of an overcast at the start of the month), then complete thirty days of Shaʿbān."

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَوْ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ «صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُبِّيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا عِدَّةَ شَعْبَانَ ثَلاَثِينَ۔»

"Fasts from Ramadan would be due from me, but I would not be able to make them up except in Shaban."

Yahya said: The preoccupation was because of the Prophet ﷺ, or with the Prophet ﷺ.

كَانَ يَكُونُ عَلَىَّ الصَّوْمُ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، فَمَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَقْضِيَ إِلاَّ فِي شَعْبَانَ.

قَالَ يَحْيَى: الشُّغْلُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ أَوْ بِالنَّبِيِّ ﷺ.

I heard 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) as saying: I had to complete some of the fasts of Ramadan, but I could not do it but during the month of Sha'ban due to my duties to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

كَانَ يَكُونُ عَلَىَّ الصَّوْمُ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَمَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَقْضِيَهُ إِلاَّ فِي شَعْبَانَ الشُّغُلُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوْ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

That the Prophet ﷺ asked him (Imran) or asked a man and ʿImran was listening, "O Abu so-and-so! Have you fasted the last days of this month?" (The narrator thought that he said, "the month of Ramadan"). The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "When you finish your fasting (of Ramadan) fast two days (in Shawwal)." Through another series of narrators ʿImran said, "The Prophet ﷺ said, '(Have you fasted) the last days of Sha'ban?"

I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying regarding Ramadan, "Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf in Ramadan during the ten nights in the middle of the month. When evening came after twenty nights had passed and the twenty-first was beginning, he would return to his dwelling, and those who had been observing i'tikaf with him would return as well.

Then, in a month in which he was observing i'tikaf, he remained on the night on which he used to return. He addressed the people and instructed them as Allah willed, then said: "I used to observe i'tikaf during these ten, but it has now become apparent to me that I should observe i'tikaf during these last ten. So whoever was observing i'tikaf with me should remain in his place of i'tikaf. I was shown this night, then I was made to forget it, so seek it in the last ten, and seek it on every odd night. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud."

The sky then opened up with rain on that night, and it rained, so the mosque leaked at the prayer place of the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the twenty-first. My own eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I looked at him as he left from the morning prayer with his face full of mud and water.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي رَمَضَانَ الْعَشْرَ الَّتِي فِي وَسَطِ الشَّهْرِ، فَإِذَا كَانَ حِينَ يُمْسِي مِنْ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً تَمْضِي وَيَسْتَقْبِلُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ رَجَعَ إِلَى مَسْكَنِهِ، وَرَجَعَ مَنْ كَانَ يُجَاوِرُ مَعَهُ.

وَأَنَّهُ أَقَامَ فِي شَهْرٍ جَاوَرَ فِيهِ اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي كَانَ يَرْجِعُ فِيهَا، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «كُنْتُ أُجَاوِرُ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ، ثُمَّ قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُجَاوِرَ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ، فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَثْبُتْ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ، وَقَدْ أُرِيتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا، فَابْتَغُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ، وَابْتَغُوهَا فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ».

فَاسْتَهَلَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ فَأَمْطَرَتْ، فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فِي مُصَلَّى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ، فَبَصُرَتْ عَيْنِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ انْصَرَفَ مِنَ الصُّبْحِ وَوَجْهُهُ مُمْتَلِئٌ طِينًا وَمَاءً.

I never saw the Prophet ﷺ seeking to fast on a day that he favored more than another except this day, the day of 'Ashura', and this month, meaning the month of Ramadan.

مَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَتَحَرَّى صِيَامَ يَوْمٍ فَضَّلَهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ إِلاَّ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهَذَا الشَّهْرَ يَعْنِي شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ قَالَ فِيهِ فِيمَا قَرَأَهُ عَلَىَّ مَالِكٌ زَكَاةُ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ صَاعٌ مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعٌ مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

"The Messenger of Allah made Sadaqatul-Fitr of Ramadan an obligation - a Sa of dried dates or a Sa of barley - required upon every free person and slave, male and female among the Muslims."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made the zakat of breaking the fast at the end of Ramadan obligatory on every muslim, whether freeman or slave, male or female, and stipulated it as a sa' of dates or a sa' of barley.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى النَّاسِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

the Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakatul-Fitr at the end of Ramadan upon the people; a Sa' of dates or a Sa' of barley, upon everyone, free or slave, male or female, of the Muslims. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2503)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

"The Messenger of Allah made Sadaqatul-Fitr of Ramadan an obligation - a Sa of dried dates or a Sa of barley - required upon every free person and slave, male and female among the Muslims." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 676)

«فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ وَعَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ» قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ تَقُولُ بِهِ؟ قَالَ «مَالِكٌ كَانَ يَقُولُ بِهِ»

the Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakatul-Fitr at the end of Ramadan upon the people; a Sa' of dates or a Sa' of barley, upon everyone, free or slave, male or female, of the Muslims. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2503)

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى النَّاسِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ وَعَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ»

Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed Zakat-ul-Fitr of Ramadan one sa' of dates or one sa' of barley for every individual among the Muslims (whether) free man or slave, male or female, young or old. (Using translation from Muslim 984e)

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ نَفْسٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ رَجُلٍ أَوِ امْرَأَةٍ صَغِيرٍ أَوْ كَبِيرٍ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ»

"The Messenger of Allah enjoined the Zakah of Ramadan on everyone, young and old, free and slave, male and female, a Sa of dates or a Sa of barley." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2502)

«فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ زَكَاةَ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ حُرٍّ وَعَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ»

Ibn Umar said that Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) prescribed the payment of Zakat-ul-Fitr (on breaking the fast) of Ramadan for people, for every freeman, or slave, male and female among the Muslims-one sa' of dried dates, or one sa' of barley. (Using translation from Muslim 984a)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى النَّاسِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mandated the zakat al-fitr in Ramadan on people, a sa'a (a measure) of dates or a sa'a of barley, for every free man or slave, male or female, among the Muslims.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى النَّاسِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made it obligatory for people to give Zakat al-Fitr during Ramadan, a Sa' of dates or a Sa' of barley, for every free Muslim male or female, slave or free.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَضَ عَلَى النَّاسِ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters that a person broke fast in Ramadan whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to free a slave (as an atonement), and the rest of the hadith is the same as narrated by Ibn Uyaina.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ

[AI] A man broke his fast in Ramadan, and he mentioned the saying.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ

Did you observe any fast in the middle of this month (Sha'ban)? He said: No. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Fast for two days instead of (one fast) when you have completed (fasts of) Ramadan.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سُرَرِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ شَيْئًا قَالَ لاَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ مَكَانَهُ

Did you observe fast in the middle of this month. i. e. Sha'ban? He said: No. Thereupon he said to him: When it is the end of Ramadan, then observe fast for one day or two (Shu'ba had some doubt about it) but he said: I think that he has said: two days.

أَنَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سِرَرِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ شَيْئًا يَعْنِي شَعْبَانَ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمًا أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ شُعْبَةُ الَّذِي شَكَّ فِيهِ قَالَ وَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ يَوْمَيْنِ

Did you observe any fast in the middle of this month (Sha'ban)? He said: No. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Fast for two days instead of (one fast) when you have completed (fasts of) Ramadan. (Using translation from Muslim 1161c)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سِرَارِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ شَيْئًا؟ فَقَالَ لَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ مَكَانَهُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked a man: Did you fast the last day of Sha'ban ? He replied: No. He said: If you did not observe a fast, you must fast for a day. One of the two narrators said: For two days. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2328)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سُرَرِ شَعْبَانَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ قَالَ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ صُمْ يَوْمًا

Did you observe fast in the middle of this month. i. e. Sha'ban? He said: No. Thereupon he said to him: When it is the end of Ramadan, then observe fast for one day or two (Shu'ba had some doubt about it) but he said: I think that he has said: two days. (Using translation from Muslim 1161d)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سُرَرِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ شَيْئًا؟ يَعْنِي شَعْبَانَ فَقَالَ لَا فَقَالَ لَهُ إِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمًا أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ شُعْبَةُ الَّذِي شَكَّ فِيهِ قَالَ وَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ يَوْمَيْنِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man, "Have you fasted any days of this month for voluntary reasons?" The man replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "If you have already broken your fast in Ramadan, then fast for two consecutive days." Abu Muhammad said, "The man's last fasting days were the two consecutive ones."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ «هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سَرَرِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ؟» فَقَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد سَرَرُهُ آخِرُهُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Have you fasted any days of this month?" I said, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah!" He said, "Then if you break your fast in Ramadan, then fast for two consecutive days in its place."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سُرَرِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ؟» قُلْتُ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ مَكَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ يَوْمَيْنِ»

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ that he said to a man, "Did you fast from the beginning of this month, meaning Sha'ban?" The man replied, "No." The Prophet then said, "If you have completed Ramadan, then fast for a day or two."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ «هَلْ صُمْتَ مِنْ سُرَرِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ يَعْنِي شَعْبَانَ ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ رَمَضَانَ فَصُمْ يَوْمًا أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ»

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is like fasting a lifetime."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ سِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ كَانَ كَصِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ».

The Prophet ﷺ as saying: If anyone fasts during Ramadan, then follows it with six days in Shawwal, it will be like a perpetual fast.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ بِسِتٍّ مِنْ شَوَّالٍ فَكَأَنَّمَا صَامَ الدَّهْرَ

the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six from Shawwal, then that is (equal in reward) to fasting everyday."

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ سِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ فَذَلِكَ صِيَامُ الدَّهْرِ

“Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ بِسِتٍّ مِنْ شَوَّالٍ كَانَ كَصَوْمِ الدَّهْرِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan and six days from the month of Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted the entire year."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ وَسِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ فَقَدْ صَامَ الدَّهْرَ
